Gargamel - Recording synth (MiniMoog)

YouTube via mufte
"Norwegian rock band Gargamel started recording their second album at Harry´s Gym Studio in Oslo in December 2007.

This is from when we recorded synths at in April of 2008. It was recorded at Bjørn Viggo Andersens appartement featuring his lovely synth collection, and the synths are played by him. Bjørn was the original keyboard player of Gargamel and was the one playing keyboards on our debut album Watch for the Umbles.

Bjørn mostly playes the wonderful Minimoog, but also some Korg MS-20 and Moog Prodigy.

Gargamels new album will be out late 2008 or early 2009.

Filmed by Tom Uglebakken (guitar, vocals, flute and sax) and Morten Tornes (drums.)

Gakken SX-150 on Microscopics

see the full write-up with images on the microscopics blog

"My good friend Charles Webster brought me a small gift from his recent Japanese/ Australian tour to help beef up the Microscopics studio: a copy of the latest Gakken magazine which also comes with an analog synth as a simple-to-build construct kit. There’s no soldering, or hair-pulling, you just need a small screwdriver and about half an hour.

It’s like a souped up Stylophone and about the same size, with a pen (you can pretend it’s a Fairlight light pen) that makes contact with a metal (or carbon in this case) keyboard to play the notes, except the SX-150 keyboard is continuous with no note divisions, so you’ll have to determine the notes by ear like on your Theremin. It also has a filter, LFO, simple VCA and pitch envelopes, and an external input to process your Minimoog." flickr set courtesy of microscopics.

Blofeld Keyboard Product Page Up

You can find the official Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard product page with preliminary info here (extensive specs are listed).

"The little villain grows up

Not only on the outside did he gain weight, also his inner qualities have seen a remarkable step-up: besides the virtual-analog synthesis and the classic wavetables it now sports a whopping 60 megabytes of sample memory.

Just imagine to add a vocal-like noise spectrum to a typical Wavetable pad, spice-up a virtual-analog solo sound with a strong attack sample or just process any other sample with the countless oscillator and filter modulations.

Play your sound creations on the high-quality keyboard with velocity and aftertouch. Pitchbend and modulation wheel are at your disposal and, as a matter of course, you can connect a sustain pedal.

All this is packaged in a sleek metal enclosure with a big graphic display, endless stainless steel rotaries and an internal power supply.

And although it comes for an unbeatable price tag, we add something very special. It comes:

From Waldorf with Love!"

Check out the site for full specs.

SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS MODEL 800 sequencer

via this auction
"This sequencer is very rare. Only 500 were made. From the nice website synthmuseum: "The Sequential Model 800 Sequencer is a 256-event cv/gate sequencer based on microprocessor technology. This was probably Sequential's first product. Dave Smith started making these units in his garage. Early serial numbers even feature a strange sci-fi looking Sequential logo. It was built like a tank, encased in a 8"X10"X5" metal box. It represents one of the first attempts at a commercial meld between analog and digital technology..." see synthmuseum for more. As always you can find prior posts here by using the search box on the top left of the site. Here's a search for "sequential circuits model 800" - click and scroll.

Memorymoog Demo

YouTube via thegarranimal

"This is a Moog Memorymoog. I paid $900 USD in 2002 for this beast. A couple of years ago I had some work done which brought the modulation section back into working order and added the Kenton Midi retrofit. 5 voices tune properly, one of the voice cards I suspect has a fracture. Every time after performing an autotune I have to defeat (keep it from sounding) the out of tune voice card.

The audio for this video was recorded into Cubase SX3 through an E-mu 1616M audio interface. Absolutely no effects were added. Most patches programmed by me! This demo is guerrilla style with mostly noodling - no rehearsing whatsoever...can you tell?? So please take it easy with the comments. Maybe I make a better vid later. And sorry for the squarepusher riff :)"

Using Midify to sync GlitchDS with sequencer

YouTube via Modd3d
"I'm using GlitchDS's "strum mode" to sync it with a MIDI sequencer. Basically I'm sending MIDI notes to the Midify board which converts them and presses the "left" button on the DS at the beginning of the loop and the "right" button every 1/8th note.

Since I get to control exactly when GlitchDS advances to the next step I could get really fancy with the timing if I wanted.

Some track details:
"music is the answer nothing special, the bass is wood piano from the tx81z factory presets
Apregarot/Pedal pumper/Pumping Jack Flash/flay-a-live/benny/Another Rhythm Machine great pumping in apregarot and nice apregiation form the sl20 towards the middle (the mks plays a steady note)
The interweb.../Deadm0uch3 some nice trance gating from the SL20
Damn! Hoover/jam 1 good kaoss pad vocoding form 5:30
Public Interest/Organ Donor(1) redsound as a one shot sampler for vocals form the middle
Hands up/jam 2/Recovery from 3 to around 6, using the redsound as a keyboard//kaoss pad 3 reverse loper(around 7 minutes)
Organ Donor(2)/Tracne nice MKs 50 leads, nothing really solo
les legumes using the redsound as a regular sampler
smells like teen spirit punks dancing(lol) and the power of the mks gated by the boss SL20"

in general:
"in all of them you have the wld tx81z saw bass(and someties the classic solid/lately bass)
the mfc42 is used on the saw bass regularely, giving it a 303 clone sound

a lot of the time I use the redsound as a traditional sampler instead of looping with it(actually, in this gig i didn't even use it to loop, just to load voice samples/noises

also, the ER1 goes thru a rat distortion+boss v-wha+delay and i wha it most of the time, sometimes with the formant filter, sometimes with the regular crybaby"

YouTube via btpro. music starts at :35.
"The Joy of the Preset-Synthesizer. First battle is Roland SH-1000 vs SH-2000!

I like Preset-Synthesizer. An engineer made sound with analog technology at the time without the sampling technology.

It was often that I heard a sound different from the displayed name in them.

I often thought "Is this the sound of the piano?".

But I can imagine a desperate face of the engineers who are going to make a genuine sound with an analog circuit.

It is very exciting/humorous for me.

Roland SH-1000 is Japanese first synthesizer and SH-2000 is Preset-synthesizer for organist.

I love them! Please enjoy!"

Processing external audio with an analog modular synthesizer

Processing external audio with an analog modular synthesizer from Isotope Of Me on Vimeo.
"I started feeling guilty about not running external audio through my modular more often, so thought I'd put together a clip of a few different types of modulation that a basic modular setup is capable of. The audio is a recording of my friend Anna (she would never tell me what it is that she is saying) from a few years ago. This video includes processing with the Ring Modulator, Audio rate and Low Frequency Amplitude Modulation and Filtering (LP, BP and HP). There's an mp3 of a short ambient tone poem that I improvised this morning that uses the ring modulation technique on my site isotopeofme.com."

Pink Floyd - One of my Turns intro (Prophet-5)

YouTube via mrduckbutt
"Pink Floyd's "One of my Turns" intro played on Prophet 5 synthesizer. Warning - These depressing chords will likely make you want to commit suicide. Also threw in booming octave bass notes at the end (think of that scary synth part in "Goodbye Blue Sky").

Here are the synth settings:
Poly-Mod: Filter Env = 7.5, Osc B = 0, Dest = Freq A
LFO: Freq = 2.5, Wave = Triangle
Wheel-Mod: Source = LFO, Dest = Filter (I use a slight amount of wheel to give the sound a movement)
Osc A: Freq = 3, Wave = Saw, Sync = On
Osc B: Freq = 3, Wave = None, KB = On, Lo Freq = Off
Mixer: Osc A = 5, Osc B = 5, Noise = 0
Filter: Cutoff = 5.5, Res = 1.5, Env = 0, Attack = 3.5, Decay = 7.5, Sustain = 0, KB = On
Amp: Attack = 0, Decay = 0, Sustain = 10
Release: Off"

KORG KR-77

images via this auction

"This Auction is for a rare Korg kpr-77 drum machine
It was originaly sold at around the same time as the Roland TR-606. In alot of ways its very similar to the TR-606 ITs pretty much exactly the same size , has the same number of sounds Kick,Snare,Open hat,Closed hat,Cymbal/Clap,Low tom and High Tom. It has two trigger outs that are 1/4 inch outs as aposed to the little ones on the 606. It also has Dyn Sync so could be synced to a tr-606 or tb-303 etc but i think korgs sync 48 ppqn.

I have owned a few 606s in the past and much prefer the sound of the kpr-77 the Toms are awsome the kick isnt as tight as the 606 but sits nicely next to the toms the hats are really nice metalic sounding and the clap is hipnotic."
