Subject: What are the best Moogs (non-modular)
Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 13:46:04 -0700
Lets talk Moogs. Is the Minimoog the best choice for a good
sounding non-modular Moog synth? It doesn't seem to have that many
controls-- I want something I can really fool around with--- maybe I'm just
talking out of my rear-- I don't know-- I just need someone to reassure me.
:-) Also-- at the present, I am looking for a good working Moog synthezier
at the price of $200 or below. Thank you very much."

Vermona Perfourmer
via this auction by noisebug
"The PERFOURMER is a true analog synthesizer, providing a nearly unlimited diversity of basses, leads, pads and effect sounds through its incredibly flexible sound generation circuitry and its easy user interface. In addition, the PERFOURMER can be used as a complex filterbank with its 6 filter inputs!
Even though the PERFOURMER is not a modular system, you can configure its structure as a semi-modular. The basic concept is reminiscent of classic synthesizers like the Oberheim 4-Voice or the Korg MONO/POLY.
The PERFOURMER consists of four voices. Each of them is a completely separate synthesizer which can be played and tweaked individually . You can link the synthesizer channels in any combination with each other and play them in three modes. The PERFOURMER's four synthesizer channels are identical and have the following structure:
* One VCO with six waveforms, which are divided into two different octaves and a noise generator which produces white noise. The pitch can be adjusted smoothly in a range of +/- 13 halftones.
* A 4-pole lowpass filter with resonance and variable keytrack.
* A fast ADSR envelope that can modulate the VCA and VCF.
* A LFO with four waveforms which modulates the VCO frequency and the CUTOFF frequency, as well as the VCA.
* One VCA that can be modulated by the ADSR envelope, a fixed GATE envelope or the LFO.
The synthesizer channels 1 to 3 can function as modulator for their neighbouring synthesizer channel. For example, synthesizer 1 can modulate the VCO frequency and the CUTOFF frequency of synthesizer 2. Or synthesizer 2 can modulate synthesizer 3, etc. The modulation intensity can be adjusted separately for VCO and VCF.
All four synthesizer channels can be linked in arbitrary fashion and can be used in one of the following three modes:
* UNISON: All combined channels work as one monophonic synthesizer.
* DUOPHONIC: This mode separates the PERFOURMER into a two-voice synthesizer. Synthesizer 1 and 2 are voice no. one and synthesizer 3 and 4 work as voice no. two.
* POLYPHONIC: All combined channels work as a polyphonic synth.
Depending on the selected mode and in which way the synthesizer channels are combined, the PERFOURMER can be used as a fat monophonic synthesizer with 4 oscillators, 4 filters, 4 VCAs, etc., but also as a two, three, or four voice polyphonic synthesizer.
All synthesizer channels, that aren't combined with any other, work as simple monophonic synthesizers.
The PERFOURMER has six filter inputs.
There is one filter input per channel. The input signal will be added to the oscillator's signal of the respective channel. On the rear panel of the PERFOURMER are two more inputs that are routed in parallel to all four synthesizer channels and which can be used alternatively to the oscillators' signal.
The CUTOFF frequencies of the single synthesizer channels can be controlled by MIDI.
As well as the filter inputs, there are individual outputs per channel that can also be used as a channel insert. It's easy to connect the PERFOURMER to other equipment! It's also possible to tap the unprocessed VCO signal from each synth channel.
You can increase the sonic possibilities of the PERFOURMER by "internal patching" between the channels. For example, you can create a synthesizer that consists of two PERFOURMER channels with two envelope generators and LFOs. It's also possible to double the slope of the filters by connecting two of them in a row."

Decimort
"Low quality sometimes is desiredThe Decimort effect unit is from the SilverLine family of plugins. It is a premium grade bit crusher. The complex and advanced signal processing algorithms within Decimort simulate the behaviour of the whole sampling path which exists in every AD/DA converter.
Decimort has no internal aliasing. The only aliasing effect present in the system is the modelled aliasing of the classic samplers we modelled when creating it. Undesired artefacts are not present in the processed signal. Only wanted artefacts remain. A further very steep low-pass filter, synchronised to the signal frequency, can be applied at the end of the signal path to absolutely ensure that no unwanted out-of-band signals remain."

MOTM uVCA

via this auction
" From: http://www.synthtech.com/motm190.html
The MOTM-190 is a dual VCA in a compact 1U format. VCA #1 can also be used as a Ring Modulator.
Voltage Controlled Amplifier #1 - Ring Mod
The top knob (marked BLEND) and switch (marked V and R) control VCA #1. If the switch is in the 'V' position, the circuit is a linear VCA. The BLEND control acts as an Initial Gain control, normalized to unity. If BLEND is all the way to the left (the IN position), the gain is unity ('1') and there is no modulation (the output equals the input). As the BLEND knob is turned clockwise, more and more of the CV modulates the signal. Fully clockwise (the RM position), the CV changes the gain from 0 to 1. This is 'standard' VCA operation.
If the switch is in the 'R' position, the circuit is a Ring Modulator. The BLEND control acts the same way as a Yamaha CS-80: all the way to the left, the output = the input. As BLEND is turned to the 'RM' position, the depth of the Ring Mod effect increases.
Voltage Controlled Amplifier #2
The second VCA is switchable between Linear and Exponential responses. The GAIN control sets the initial gain from 0 to 1. The CV MOD control ajusts the depth of AM for the VCA (in normal operation, the GAIN is set to '0' and the CV MOD is set to '10').
Although 'micro' in size, the MOTM-190 is a low-noise, low distortion, high dynamic range (better than 100dB) dual VCA. The Ring Modulator BLEND control is not found on any other modular.

Threshold - Lainhart Performance in New York City October 16
via Richard Lianhart:"Friends: on Thursday, October 16, at Judson Church in New York City, I'll be performing the premiere of my EMF-commissioned piece "Threshold", for electric guitar and Kyma, as part of the Ear To The Earth 2008 New York Soundscape festival.
Here are the details, and an excerpt
More about New York Soundscape
"Threshold" creates its soundscape through a process called cross-filtering, which runs on the Kyma system. In cross-filtering, the tonal characteristics of one sound, called the impulse response, are imposed on another, called the source, so that the end result is a sound that contains only the characteristics common to both. In this case, ambiences recorded in and around New York provide the source, and my guitar playing provides the impulse response. You hear neither directly, but only the result of the interaction between me and my environment.
Recording sources and locations: street traffic during a cab ride from 53rd Street to 89th Street; the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art, and a floor buffer in a side gallery; the lobby and galleries of the Guggenheim Museum; a trash compacter in the mid-50s; an air-conditioning compressor in the mid-50s; an industrial document shredder in the mid-80s; Olafur Elliason's New York Waterfall #4 at Pier 35; traffic on the FDR Drive at South Street; nocturnal insects and thunderstorms in Rockland County.
In addition, I'll be showing my short film LUX while performing a new live soundtrack consisting of the same NY sound sources used in Threshold, but this time processed with realtime spectral transformations to create a unique new ambience.
Those interested may download my original environmental sound source mix here, to do with as you wish:

I built it per schematic and there were a few errors in the original design that have been removed or corrected. After having fun with it for a couple months I've decided to get rid of it and build one that is completely me design and does exactly what I want it to do.
If you're interested in this I will be selling it for a fair amount. mshaner84@gmail.com for details."

Synthmonger "mini"-guitar synth
via synthmonger on this electro-music.com thread."I've been working on a guitar synth the past few days. I'm building a mini and mega version. Basically the mega version has more sub-octaves, pwm, and a vca for A/D controls.
I'm stuck on the layout. I just can't decide how I want things laid out. Ideally, I want each section (mixer/pwm/EF, etc) together but trying to lay them out symmetrically has been difficult for me. The posistion of the knobs must follow to the layout in order to fit in the case properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Just to let you know I'm not using 1v/oct frequency converter to control the vco's and it tracks pretty darn well. I'm sync'ing 40106 vco's that are based around my design. It's a fairly simple circuit that is a helluva lot of fun to play with!
The layout doesn't have the stompswitch or led indicator on there yet, but it'll go in the middle towards the bottom. The back will have vc inputs for each pwm, vco freq, and vcf." See the thread for updates.
