Glitch monster sk-1.mov

YouTube via kidtronic
"This is a one-of-a-kind patchable glitch box. It is dozens of hours of soldering spagetti by the inventor www.kingcapitalpunishment.com You can find it on his website under one of a kind devices. It was once a Casio sk-1. Features I am NOT demonstrating here: Hendrix-style feedback loops using the microphone send and the drum machine glitch out. Oceanus shows some of that drum thing, so instead i thought I'd simply patch up and go. The click beat your hearing are the 8 mechanical relays that switch on the glitch patch. I am also not using the light source VCA. This machine is simply mad, Mad i tell you! You can do melodic flutes with poly-portemento, vibrato and built-in echo but I didn't do that either. Madness in a box. Lots of fun."

Itinerant Keyboard and Diplomat interface module

YouTube via TheUmbrellaCo
"The Itinerant is 5th in the now epic "Tourist" series of circuit bent keyboards built into antique suitcases. It takes a departure being built around the classic kit keyboard design we all know and love for its juicy wonderful analog waveforms. The controls are centered around user assignables rather than presets. The nature of these keyboards is more that of momentary beauty than solid SK-1 predictability. It is shown here sequenced by the Diplomat interface module. The Diplomat is a new addition in the Umbrella Company arsenal. It is a 40 A/D input, 8 midi/analog switching output interface and controller. The main bay features pairs for 40 different ascii signals which are transmitted over a standard usb cable, and can then be used for just about anything. Shown here, the 'a' pair is connected to a plate and alligator clip and is being used to start a sequence in Max which steps through 5 midi messeges at about 185 bpm. The midi is then used by the Diplomat's output section to trigger the connection of 5 respective bends in the main bay of the keyboard. The apple remote is also demonstrated for a bend switching application. Also on the front panel: convenient voltage leads for motors and solenoids, and power/midi indicator leds. Both pieces are available on ebay this week! Feel free to email with questions at theumbrellacompany@yahoo.com
Enjoy!"

ARP Pro Soloist DGX

images at this auction
"This synth is a rare variation on the Pro Soloist. ARP labeled this a "digital synthesizer", but don't let that fool you--there is nothing digital about the sound of this synth. The label simply refers to the rudimentary method of patch storage, which uses some ones and zeros. The sound of this beast is full of creamy 70's analog goodness. There are few controls to alter the patches, but the sounds are really well chosen and useful, so you won't want to change them much anyway. Having a preset synthesizer on stage is advantageous; now you won't have to adjust all those sliders on the Odyssey every time you play out. Check out the pictures of the patch names--it is worth buying this synth just to select the patch entitled, "NOZE".

This synth sounds great. A few of the switches for the "Touch Sensor Effects" are not working. There is no aftertouch or velocity on the Pro/DGX; the switches simply apply an envelope to different parameters. The most important of these switches (REPEAT, WOW, and VIBRATO) do work and GROWL occasionally works on some patches. All the presets work great, as do the slider controls, though BRILLIANCE sometimes has a crackly spot if not used frequently. And, of course, the slider caps are gone."

Update via the world of next tuesday in the comments: "Actually it uses a single high frequency digital square wave oscillator that's divided down then analog waveshaped with an analog signal path, vcf and some fixed filters. One big thing that the digital tech impacts is there is no direct way I've ever seen of to control the pitch via CV. I guess you put a switch under every key though.

The presets are also recalled on a digital matrix, but that wouldn't impact the sound by itself."

Analogue Systems rs35 External Processor -Guitar Synth

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Here is the incredible Analogue Systems rs35 External Processor eurorack synthesizer module.

The rs35 is a frequency (or pitch) to voltage converter. It can turn virtually any sound source into a one volt per octave voltage allowing you to control an analog synthesizer.

We are running a Strat into the Barber Electronics TonePress compressor pedal for added sustain. The guitar signal is then run into the low pass filter section of the A.S. rs110 Multimode filter to roll off some of the highs.

Now we run the audio into the rs35 'Frequency In'. The rs35's voltage out goes to the rs95 voltage controlled oscillator. We're using various modules to alter the oscillator sound including the rs100 Low Pass filter, the rs120 Comb Filter, and the rs290 voltage controlled digital delay/sampler.

Finally, a practical, easy way to play your analog synthesizer with a guitar. Rad."

Jeff Beck - Blue Wind

YouTube via CloudFROST. Lync keytar. via Josh.

"Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer and Simon Phillips playing the classic song "Blue Wind" from Jeff's album "WIRED" 1976"

Update via va69nm: "Hell no! that's Jan playing his custom Probe controller, originally developed by Roger Powell for his gig with Utopia...arguably the original 'keytar,' with respect to Mattson's Syntar and George Duke's Clavitar. Hammer's controller was custom-wired to his Minimoog/Oberheim SEM rig that, per Hammer's own marketing of the day, "sounds a lot like a guitar." Powell's Probe had a different, smaller pitchbend/mod wheel array, whereas Hammer's was modeled with his fondness for the Minimoog's spacing & setup. Hammer played (as did Gary Wright & Steve Porcaro) with a strap-on, cutaway Mini keyboard and experimented with the angle of the pitch wheels by housing them in a separate, adjustable, squarish assembly mounted in place of the traditional pb/mod wheels, until the optimum angle was found; this placement was then implemented permanently on Hammer's probe. Hammer's signature Lync purported to be modeled after his Probe, but the Lync is a MIDI controller, not hardwired analog. Don't take my word for all this, Google is a powerful tool :) Kudos to Jan ( and to Roger!) for going above & beyond, innovating a style of playing remote keyboard and holding their own in rock bands while still looking credible and not gimmicky, that has yet to be equalled, IMHO..."

MIDI Out: pitchbend, mod wheel, velocity and note data is transmitted.
Local on/off feature

The Leipzig-k keyboard design brief was simple; design a keyboard in the true spirit of vintage keyboard monosynths. There's plenty of rack analogues and digital modelling keyboard synths around, but very few new true analogue keyboards. We aimed to design a keyboard monosynth that looked like it has been beemed back from the past. True, it has an LCD to edit the MIDI functions, but why make life hard! Thick wooden end panels and top panel wood and aluminium spun knob-caps add to the effect. Details such as this don't come cheap, but the added cost of the hardware to get the right hardware was not omitted or the design compromised. I wanted to design a synth that truly looked the part and had all those classic vintage synth details, and no expensive or time has been spared to bring that. The quality of design, workmanship and detailing is all of top quality. The case is rugged 1.2mm steel, thick wood sides, powder coated metal, silk-screened legend, aluminium apped knobs and more.

So Leipzig looks the part, but it sounds good too. Pure analogue throughout. Discrete transistor, resistor, capacitor design. The only ICs are as you would expect; op-amps and transconductance amps. Of course there is digital circuits; the MIDI circuits, but I think you can forgive us for that! It's somehow comforting to know that if you open up this synth you will see thousands of discrete components and not just some giany DSP chip! If you had the knowledge (and were prepared to lose your warranty) then you could open up the synth and circuit-bend it as you wish, disect your way into the sound or CV path.

The Leipzig-k is more than just a Leipzig rack with a keyboard. An extra LFO/VCA has been added. The depth of the LFO is controlled via the Mod Wheel. A headphone output has been added. CV/CV2/Gate inputs and outputs making this an ideal analogue synth controller keyboard."

"Zoybar is a modular hardware platform for creating custom electric string instruments and effects.

The basic Zoybar kits enable you to assemble a variety of electric string instruments

that could be mounted with different sound effects (like the kaoss pad in the attached image).

You can learn more about the project here

A little more info
I was inspired form the open source movement.

In the virtual world of software production, every individual programmer can be a powerful autonomous production unit (provided with a web connection and a computer) where as in the physical world materials, energy, production lines, storage and marketing takes much more time, money and risks to become a reality.

The Zoybar components provide research and development tools as a sustainable, playable prototype platform.

The same modular parts can be assembled as different instruments, can be change during the performance and also be mounted with numerous special effects, just by adding and changing their position across the profile groves.

My vision is to found an open music instruments hardware community.

Every new effect or feature that would be created by an independent developer could become relevant to the whole Zoybar users and community.

Almost any application can be easily attached to the Zoybar platform, just by adding and changing its position across the profile groves with common bolts and screws.

One last thing,
We are giving Three First Edition Zoybar Hardware Kits.

The project is scheduled to be launched at December 2008 with a contest for music instruments and sound effect developers.

Entrants shall submit a video clip performance of their new instrument to demonstrate its musicality, design, and engineering features. Performances may include new self made sound effects, synthesizer or electronic instruments.

Three First Edition Zoybar Hardware Kits will be given to the three videos with the highest number of views received through the video interaction at Zoybar.net.

Mrmr is an ongoing open-source research project to develop a standardized set of protocols and syntax conventions to control live installations and multimedia performances via mobile devices. The project is currently spearheaded by Eric Redlinger, researcher-in-residence at Brooklyn Polytechnic University’s Integrated Digital Media Institute.

Simply put, Mrmr is a technology that enables you to use ordinary cell phones and PDAs as controllers in audio-visual performances, or to participate in interactive museum exhibits, or to use your mobile device in the place of the mouse or trackpad from your full-size computer.

Key elements of the Mrmr project are:

* create your own interface using only a text editor
* multiuser by design / client peer-to-peer or client-server models supported
* open standards (zeroconfig/bonjour/mdns, OSC), open source
* dynamic interfaces: widgets can be reconfigured 'on the fly'
