"Short film of my sonic installation, exete castle, uk, march09.
The piece is a sonic sculpture, using a former magistrates holding cell as a vessel for feedback.
Mechanical feedback was acheived with a copper wire web, using piezo pickups, coneless speakers as resonators, and was fed with room sound from directional microphones. The whole pickup sound was then fed into thre room with PA speakers, creating an evolving sound. The sound was modulated by, sound, touch and movement."

Dewanatron - Melody Gin Part 1

YouTube via bigcitymusic
"Brian from Dewanatron demonstrates the Melody Gin. The Melody Gin is an all analog synthesizer that has two oscillators, four LFO's, an envelope generator and a host of other unique features. The Melody Gin can be externally clocked too. These are absolutely beautiful looking and sounding instruments. All the designs are engineered from the ground up by Leon Dewan.

Dewanatron is a collaboration between cousins Leon and Brian Dewan. Dewanatron pieces have been shown in art galleries in New York and Germany. Now they're in Los Angeles! We'll make a higher fidelity video soon."

Introducing NIIO Analog and the Iotine Core

New via niioanalog.com. Be sure to see the site for more of their offerings. This post focuses on the Iotine Core.

"The IOTINE CORE is a dual in, 3 out analog processor that redefines what can be achieved in an outboard processor. The IC features 3 separate processing layers that each include a filter, vca, and a selection of saturation circuits. The dual channel SAT selection with variable DRIVE offers rich texture and intensity circuits designed to alter sound density through analog distortion and waveshaping techniques. Dynamic movement of frequency and amplitude of the layers is a base design feature of the IC. The movement is derived from envelopes that are triggered from the sound itself, resulting in organic and flexible modulation that conforms to the sound and creates a living animation that pulls out or pushes down elements of the sound. Further processing can be applied by separating the layers on output from the IC, allowing external mixing and effecting options that expand the unit into an incredibly flexible processing system." Be sure to see the video link on the Iotine Core page. Impressive. via mati

Optigan LED Disc Simulation Thingy

YouTube via peahix
"This is a quickie video I shot to demo the modulated LED thingy that Robert built so I can monitor sounds directly from my computer thru a real Optigan's signal path. This essentially tricks the Optigan into thinking there's an actual disc spinning inside it, though it only works on the very first channel (ie, the outermost soundtrack ring on an Optigan disc). There's a spreadsheet which automatically calculates a 10-band EQ curve for each of the 57 Optigan soundtrack rings, so if I'm trying to work on, say, the sound that goes on track 42, I EQ that sound using the settings for track 42 in the spreadsheet. These EQ curves are only for monitoring purposes through the Optigan. We did some tests, and it actually models the way a real Optigan disc sounds very accurately. This way I don't have to shoot in the dark and spend ~$200 on a test disc only to find out it the end result sounds terrible.

I also shot this video out of exasperation at the totally unreasonable amount of radio interference I get on Optigans at my house. Trying to discern subtleties in the sound through all the radio stuff is not easy or fun. Coming soon: the Orchestron FRENCH HORN disc, remastered. Stay tuned to http://www.optigan.com."

Pelican Case MOD - Live Setup

YouTube via autoflavour
"Inspired by lack of adequate space at clubs and venues for electronic musicians, this rig requires only floor space and a single power outlet.

The setup consists of a modified pelican case that enables the rack mounting of equipment. This means I can be setup and ready to play in under 4 minutes. Hardware includes Virus Snow, Virus C, M-Audio Audiophile, Numark CM200USB 5 Channel Mixer, Novation SL25 Compact, iPod + TouchOSC.

The custom patch bay includes XLR Lamp XLR & RCA OUT, RCA IN to Channel 5 fader, RCA IN to input on Virus C, RCA IN to line in on m-audio.

I decided to use the M-Audio Audiophile as the primary sound device over the the inbuilt USB audio in the Numark CM200USB. The reasoning for this was purely down recording latency and routing configurations.

I do however have the CM200USB and the M-Audio set up as a aggregate device in OSX, enabling me to speak to both devices from Ableton.

The TouchOSC patch is a custom one built using the beta TouchOSC editor.

A quick explanation of the Audio routing page in the TouchOSC template.
This page was created only yesterday as a way to easily route audio to the Atomizer on the fly. I simply created 2 Sends channels and routed all Audio to SENDS ONLY in Ableton. Then assigned the individual SENDS dials to each button, effectively creating on off switched. This enables me to easily select the output I would like a track to take.

Not shown in this video, Controlling the Virus C.
Basically I have split the Novation into 2 zones. The first zone (1 Octave) controls the Atomizer via direct MIDI cable between the devices, where as the second zone (rest of the octaves) are routed to the USB cable which is then passed through Ableton to the Virus C via the M-Audio. To switch between keyboard control of either device, I simply shift octaves.

For those interested, the case weighs approx 16kg and due to the bolts in the sides, it is no longer water proof, however the rubber washers do protect it from most water (It is just not submersible anymore)"

Line6 MIDI MOBILIZER AND RIG REMOTE for the iPhone and iPod Touch

"Line 6 and D'Addario, the world's leading producer of musical instrument strings, drumheads, reeds and accessories, announced today the development of MIDI Mobilizer™, a new portable MIDI interface, and Planet Waves® Rig Remote™, new iPhone™ software that will enable guitarists to control Line 6 guitars and amplifiers via Apple® iPhone and iPod® touch.

Marcus Ryle, Line 6 co-founder and SVP of research and development, demonstrated a prototype at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). He adjusted the tone of a Vetta™ II digital modeling amplifier and changed the tuning of a Variax® digital modeling guitar from the palm of his hand. 'With the MIDI Mobilizer,' he remarked, 'the iPhone becomes the most portable and versatile editor and tone storage device for your Line 6 gear. Finding the perfect tone has never been easier.'"

http://line6.com/news/general/840 (more info)

In this post Gizmodo makes it sound like you can plug your instrument directly into your iPhone to process audio real time. Everything I'm seeing on the Line 6 site makes it sound like the iPhone acts as a remote control to their hardware which does the actual processing. If anyone knows more, feel free to comment.

The Überorgan by Tim Hawkinson

via Cynthia

"The audio harmonics shape the actual form of the blown plastic balloons!

These are like three-dimensional envelope generators..."

You can find more info at http://www.gardendome.com/uberorgan/Uberorgan.html
"Tim describes it as a giant self-playing reed organ. Located in the museum's largest gallery, 300 feet long. Twelve large reservoir balloons are collectors of pressurized air that is computer regulated into the reed - resonator assemblies from whence comes endless varieties of periodic low tones. The reeds are electronically controlled by a player console which acts like a player piano with a 250 ft long loop of mylar painted with dots and dashes that triggers light sensitive switches...."

Triadex Muse Digital Synthesizer

via this auction

"This is an incredible opportunity to purchase a rare piece of history.

According to synthmuseum.com, "This unique machine [Triadex Muse] is regarded by some as the first digital musical instrument. Designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky at MIT, the Muse is an algorithmic music generator."

Engadget writes "[The Triadex Muse] had impeccable geek credentials. It was designed by two MIT professors, Marvin Minsky and Edward Fredkin. At the time, Minsky was moonlighting on the set of 2001 A Space Odyssey, teaching Stanley Kubrick about Artificial Intelligence as he created Hal."

"The Muse even had an even rarer accessory, the Light Show, which flashed coloured lights in time to the music... Only 280 units were ever manufactured. Unlike vintage analog synths, a Muse won't generate a fat bassline for a hip hop record, but they are very collectable."

This particular Tridex Muse is in good condition. There is a small scuff mark on the stainless steel front near the Muse logo. A control toggle switch is imperfect and loose, and will not stay in the 'down' position. Besides these issues, the wood is in superb condition, as are the stainless steel face and sides. The sound works perfectly as does the light show.

SPECS: Serial number: 00731-113. AC 115-125v. 60 CPS. Model: Muse 01"
