Sigur Rós Glósóli played on a Tonal Plexus

YouTube via AaronAndrewHunt

"This is my rendition of Glósóli by Sigur Rós, from the 2005 album Takk. It really doesn't take 211 keys in an octave to play this, but it's nice to be able to play it in Just Intonation, with different pitches depending on the voice leading. This is a single take. I tried to capture some of the grandeur of the original, though that is really impossible, and I hope you won't think my effort is too lame ... get the real thing here - IMHO possibly the best music video ever made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr_MJA... ... more about the Tonal Plexus at http://www.h-pi.com"

"this is a custom, one of a kind, home altered califone record player from the 60's maybe? it's been made into a filter effect that is controled by a light sensor under the platter that spins. you can take that part off and drill more holes, you can add your own disks for different patterns, there are a lot of possibillities for simple mods. i didn't mess around with the ac circuit too much because i don't want to die from electrical shock and i recomend the same for anybody that buys this and doesn't know much about AC. i added a power light and there is also a ring mod oscillator built in that has two modes: high and low. high puts the carrier freq. in the foreground and low just takes it back behind whatever your's running through it. it has in and out so you can use this like a regular effects pedal without even plugging in the amp. the effect takes a nine volt battery that is mounted an the top for easy access. it comes complete with the latch on cover. feel free to ask any questions and please write me for a price quote on international shipping. the synth in the video is an atari punk console"

PAIA GNOME MICRO SYNTH

via this auction

Not the best pics but the following from the description is interesting: "[from an interview with John Simonton, PAiA Electronics, Inc.]
'While it started out as purely an electronic instrument to make wind sounds, the Gnome turned into one of the smallest, most portable analog synthesizers ever manufactured." [It was also battery powered.] "'The Gnome started out as an instrument that wasn't going to do anything more than make the sound of wind - not like a flute, but real wind. Ssssshhhhew. That kind of wind, which could be played with a little vinyl controller strip that was part of it. The Gnome was one of those things that just grew. After the instrument that did the wind sound was done, it became pretty apparent that you could stick other components in there and essentially come up with a small synthesizer, a thing that captured the central ideas of voltage-controlled synthesis at the time - Oscillators, filters, transient generators, and so on - but stripped down to the essentials or the core. It was an attempt to get rid of that keyboard that was always by far the single most expensive part of anything we made, by order of magnitude or more.'" Includes assembly and users manual.

flight of harmony newsletter June 2009

"Greetings!

It has been rather hectic lately, but the storm has nearly passed, so it’s time for some updates:

· Frac format Choices joystick modules are in stock at Analogue Haven. I haven’t had time to update the Choices page, but they are available. The Choices euro format is available through Analogue Haven and Schneiders Buero.

· Plague Bearer r3.2 with VC Gain is available at AH and SB in euro format.

· The Infernal Noise Machine is almost ready for production! Some sound clips taken during testing are here. PCBs will be ordered this week.
I have to pause here to thank those that purchased the first run. You all have been patient, understanding and kind way beyond what would be reasonable to expect, and I am very honored to have such exceptional clients as you. I hope you find that these are worth the wait!

· Production of the standalone Rev3.2 Quad Plague Bearer begins as soon as the I.N.M. are completed. Information on the original quad unit is available here. This run will have the fully-updated r3.2 PB circuitry, and the jack panel has been redone to accommodate the Gain CV input jacks. I found a batch of housings and was originally planning to use them for something else, but enough requests came in shortly thereafter to justify another run. There are a few housings that are not yet spoken for, so contact me if you are interested. They are USD$350 each + S&H (depends on location).

OK, back to work.

Oraison

YouTube via rlainhart
"Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009.

From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery.

"Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music.

"Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you."

"This summer, Arturia is celebrating 10 years of innovation in instrument design. Frédéric Brun, President: "We started Arturia in the summer 1999 with a vision, the vision technology would dramatically change the way the world makes music. At our first trade show, Winter NAMM 2000, our stand held the arrogant tag "Time for a new paradigm". It was ambitious but not totally out of scope. Along with many other innovative companies, Arturia has been happy to take part in evolutions that allowed more and more people to produce their own music.
Today we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our customers who made this possible by trusting Arturia along the way. For them we prepared a series of updates and other news to be announced all summer-long. Watch out for free upgrades, special promotions, events and more." via Sonic State

Moog - Voyager Touch Surface CV Control of two Moogerfoogers

YouTube via MoogMusicInc
"Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Project) gives a quick demonstration of using the Voyager's Touch Surface CV outputs to simultaneously control two Moogerfoogers. He does this using the Touch Surface CV outputs on the VX-351 Output Expander. The X-axis CV is sent to a Mult, where it outputs two identical copies of the CV. One copy is sent through an inverting attenuator on a CP-251 Control Processor. Both CV are sent to the Mix inputs of the Moogerfoogers. Since one of the CV's is inverted, positive Touch Surface "X" values increase the mix of one. Negative "X" values increase the mix on the other."

"//Cycle 7831 is my final degree piece for the Digital Music and Sound Arts course at Brighton University, England.

Both sound and image were synthesised from scratch. One of the main techniques used to create the aural component was spectral synthesis, where frames taken from early renders were used to generate sound. The percussive element was created using the usual percussion synthesis techniques, fast mod EG's and so on.

The image was rendered out from Blender in sections then sequenced and edited in After Effects. The audio was imported in stems, analysed, then linked to various effect parameters."
