"he Matrix-6R is basically a rack-mounted Matrix-6 without the keyboard. It featured 6-note polyphony and digital osciallators. Each voice has two DCOs, a VCF, three envelope generators (5 stage: Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release), two ramp generators (simple envelopes), tracking (not just for the keyboard but for remapping any modulation source), portamento and FM controls, three LFOs, and two VCAs. Along with other "Matrix" products from Oberheim, the Matrix-6R featured what Oberheim called, "Matix Modulation System", which makes for very flexible and powerful modulation programming. With this much programmability it is unfortunate that, like the Matrix-6, the only user interface is a single slider and a keypad. However the Matrix-6R does give you 6 individual LEDs that light up for each voice that is played. It also features MIDI mono mode where each voice has its own MIDI channel (very useful for guitar controllers).. "

Korg Ds-10 Patches - Realistic(ish) drum kit

"I've been sat with ds-10 for a few nights now learning a few things about drum synthesis. I knew a little theory, but mostly I have just let my ear guide me. After a million indescicive tweaks I came up with a drum kit I think is good enough to share with the world. There is 5 drums in total. A kick, snare, closed hi-hat and open hi-hat in the drum section, then also a distorted tom loaded into pattern 6's syn2.

I recorded the sound separately so I could show you the parameters while you listen to a few loops I made with them. I couldn't resist putting a bit of a bass line over it too, just for fun : )

p.s. I'll add some annotations when the damn thing'll let me!"

RIP Michael Jackson

As you've all probably heard by now, the King of Pop has passed away. I wasn't expecting to put a post up as all posts have to be about the synths, however it just didn't seem right to not put something up, and I did find a bit of fascinating synth history, when you think about it, below.

I remember growing up listening to bits of the Jackson Five and later Michael Jackson. My sister was in love with his music, and Elvis Presley. The perfect match. I remember when Elvis was the King of Rock and Roll and Michael announced himself as the King of Pop. I wondered if it would stick. I remember when Off the Wall came out followed by Thriller. I remember staying up to watch the Thriller video with my sister, and her telling me how it was the most expensive video ever made. I thought it was crazy how long it would be. I recently remember watching that odd video of inmates somewhere in Asia performing Thriller, a hundred plus inmates in orange, prison garbs, all in sync. All crazy memories in time, all full of life and energy. That is the one thing Michael Jackson was to me - a man filled with wonder and energy. I will always remember him as that somewhat magical character who never lost that bit of childhood wonder. I'm sure he has influenced me in ways I have yet to realize, some bits I'm coming to realize just typing this. Pretty crazy... pretty amazing... I hope he is well wherever he is. He did bring wonder to life.

As for the interesting bit of synth history and the image from Thriller. The following is a list of the synths used and the players (via micke in this VSE thread). It is an interesting look at what synths were used on THE best selling album of all time. RIP Michael. RIP The King of Pop. It definitely stuck.

He is most known for his work with The Orb, where he helped mix and produce Orbus Terrarum, Orblivion, and Cydonia, as well as The Orb's singles from this period. Hughes left The Orb during the production of Cydonia, which was reworked after his departure. He also did some additional original production work and performed remixes for The Cranberries and Tangerine Dream.

And with THE JACKSON 5 as his latest smash supergroup, Gordy was at the height of his influence. ...

Hoby Cook was a technician at Motown’s MoWest facility who tested Scott’s Electronium extensively. 'I wanted some reactions, so as an experiment, I’d open the door and turn the volume up — loud.' Cook’s technique worked. Motown personnel heard the curious sounds and wandered in. “Cal Harris did a lot of recording with it, and MICHAEL JACKSON was fascinated,' Cook recalled. 'He was just this kid sitting there, staring at the flashing lights. He said he wanted THE JACKSON 5 to use the Electronium somehow.'"

A couple chords are coming from a Solton/Ketron PROJECT100. At the end i show you one of my DIY projects, a 8/16 step sequencer (analog AND midi). Coming soon.

"The heart of the woggle-bug! Borrowing from the Wogglebug #3 an LED/LDR modulates a 555 clock. Fully buffered trigger & clock outputs, I will be doing a Lunetta version as well, at the moment its half-way in between. Final module will also have a 'clock quantizer' AND Gate so the modulated clock pulses are compared to an external clock & an output is generated only when the two occur at the same time.

Because it takes a CV in & the LED / LDR overshoots as the voltage varies this cct. works really well with modules like the VCS & the CGS Digital Noise combined with an EG or two.

In this patch the clock triggers an AD generator which modulates the rise & fall times of the VCS. Tnd End of cycle output clocks a Digital Noise with a Binary output fed back into the Lunetta to re-set the 4015 shift register.

The technicals... Soldered wires to Stylophone PCB to use its keypad / resistor ladder.. put 5V across it and read voltage at stylus by analog input pin on arduino clone (miduino). Found out input value for each note and sent out MIDI note on/off messages thru serial connection when notes are detected. Simple. Used propellerheads reason to make the sounds"

'Bird Run is the function that align's the Emax's internal stabilizers and prevents excessive gyrocosmic relativation.

During this process you need to carefully observe the display for any signs of destabilization (eg. gravitational warps, apparent speeding up or slowing down of time, objects in mirrors appearing closer than they really are). If Emax returns to the Module Identifier after a few seconds, all is well.

Note: Occasionally a small emu will get trapped within the Emax and run across the screen during the stabilization scan process. This does not affect Emax's normal functions.'

It was tuned/calibrated, cleaned, DC-in jack replaced, given orange leds (awesome),
the 6 original knobs are slightly risen for easier grip, given rubber feet on bottom and
the Acidlab Mini Modular kit was installed!

Here's the run down on the mods:
- Tough/Resistant black top face plate
- Overdrive knob
- Extra Decay knob (for staccato notes)
- Extra Resonance knob
- ACCent "2-way" toggle (all notes to be accented)
- Slide "2-way" toggle (all notes to slide)
- Bend "3-way" toggle (up bends notes higher, down bends lower, middle is off)
- extra leds for each toggle which light up based on sequence activity type
- X-Mod "3-way" toggle (Cross modulates the pulse wave (down) or the saw wave (up))
- X-Mod knob (adjusts the mod amount)
- 12 1/8" input/output jacks on back:
---- IN: slide, accent, filter, gate, cv, vca
---- OUT: square wave, saw wave, vcf, accent, slide, envelope
---- (I made a color, coated strip for these... it's tacked on with 2 pieces of tape. you can keep it on, or make your own)"

"Michael Ford (Metalbox) has begun limited production of 8 and 16 stage versions of a classic Ken Stone Catgirl Synth design Programmer/Sequencer. Each version has 4 channels (A-D) of V/OCT CV outputs, up/down ('clock trigger') inputs, common pulse and all event outputs (for summed stage and pushbutton triggers), plus individual stage pulse inputs and outputs. The latter can be used to patch complex loops between stages. Each stage has a combination output LED and pushbutton switch, so stages can be triggered manually.
