Some Notes on Making Buchla-Compatible Stuff

via Aaron on the SDIY list:

"This set of notes started life as a jumbled text file for my own use, mostly consisting of copied & pasted bits of advice I received from the SDIY mailing list. I thought others might find some of this info useful as well, so I cleaned it up a bit and posted it here.

I plan to pick up a Buchla 200e system as some point, so I am interested in some of my SDIY stuff being Buchla-compatible and having a similar overall look and feel. (Note, however, that I am not planning on selling front panels; they are for my own personal use. I'm just planning on selling circuit boards, so people can make panels in whatever their own favored format is. The info here is available in case someone is interested in doing similar things on their own.)"

The Photon Guitar Synth

via link where you'll find more info.

"It had special digital filters for each string signal, infra-red pickups, and a lot of code to handle things like fret buzzes, harmonics, etc. Kevin Kent and I started company called K-Muse to manufacture it. Later we decided to license it to Gibson. Gibson manufactured it under the name 'Phi-Tech'."

ARP Odyssey 4075 filter vs Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone

YouTube via Thalassa77.

You can here a good quality audio file of this comparative here ( youtube audio is not very good, adds strange distorsion ) :
http://www.4shared.com/file/117820238...

This is a side to side comparative between ARP Odyssey 4075 filter and a Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone.

It's suposed that the 4075 filter that is installed on the ARP Odyssey is the same filter as the 4072 that was installed on the ARP 2600. I have to opportunity to compare the the original 4075 filter with the Yusynth 4072 clone module , so I've decided to make a comparative.

Synthesizers.com VCO is connected to the ARP Odyssey external input
Synthesizers.com VCO is connected to the Yusynth ARP 4072 filter clone.

As you can heard the Yusynth module is a very accurate clone of the original ARP filter. Only slight differences can be heard at resonance settings but even these differences can be minimized changing the cut-off and resonance parameters. For example with 80% of resonance in both filters the sound could be not the same but if you move the resonance to 90% on the Yusynth module you could get the same sound.

So the only thing that I can say is... congrats Yves for your great work!!!

If you like this video remember to subscribe to be updated of my new videos."

Update via Thalassa in the comments: "I've uploaded the video to vimeo. The quality is better but even not as good as should be . Maybe the filters sounds too good that audio codecs doesn't know how to compress it :P"

The Beast x0xb0x - Including Modular Format

custom milling and engraving by Julian on the SDIY list. Be sure to click on this one for the full size shot.

Update: more images and info here. These will be available. via the AH mailing list:

"This week, I'm releasing both a new format x0xb0x, and a new finish to the desktop unit.

I have recently been making a lot of panels for use in the MOTM and Oakley systems, so a x0xb0x 'module' became an obvious next stage.

These units are built in the 5u format, with a compatible look to the large format modulars.

You can read about it, and see pictures here -

www.thebeast.co.uk/x0xb0x/

I have also become bored with the cosmetic finish of the desktop units, and felt it was time something was done in this area. Specifically, i feel that the stock 'brushed' and screened aluminium finish marks far too easily, and that printed overlays never quite work out perfectly on a panel as complex as the x0xb0x.

In light of that, I am now producing my own anodised engraved / milled panels for any desktop builds. These are made in glossy black, with sharp silver engraving and milling. Not only do they look exceedingly slick (even if I do say so myself!) but the finish will be way, way, more durable than any other finish I see currently available. These panels are produced on site, where I can keep an eye on the quality, and get a really very fine looking product.

Again, you can see photos on the above link.

Now for the introductory offer -

For a very limited period (5days) I'm offering the MOTM / Oakley format machines with a fairly large reduction (at least £50 GBP) against their normal selling price. The deadline for this offer is midnight (GMT - I'm in England, remember) on Friday. There are more details here -

www.thebeast.co.uk/x0xb0x/x0xb0x_offer.html

Again, the offer is for a limited time period, and the deadline will be strict.

Oh, and for a concluding note -

I absolutely love this song, and I thought that it would be fun to do a cover using only retro instruments (primarily from the 1980s)! What you see is the result of a compulsive need to buy weird instruments off of eBay! The featured instruments include:

Casio DG-10 Digital Toy Guitar (run through an octave pedal to create the bass. Also used for a lead in Verse 2)
Casio SK-1 Sampling Keyboard (used for the strings and the brass)
Dubreq Stylophone (for electric guitar riffs)
Suzuki Omnichord electric autoharp (run through a resonator plug-in to add texture)
The drums are samples from the SK-1 and DG-10, triggered via the Rock Band controller.

This is a "VideoSong"-style vid inspired by the videos of Jack Conte, Nataly Dawn, Pomplamoose and Joel Cathey. If you haven't seen their videos yet, go start watching! And buy their music!"

The pitch of each square wave is controlled by its own light detector. These are paired off and mixed through diodes for a ring modulation/amplitude modulation like effect. 3 waves go to the left channel and 3 waves in the right. It is capable of a very wide frequency range as you will hear!

TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Overview

YouTube via stereoping
"My TinyRhythm is finished. A little tweaking on it. It is a 8 channel Drumsynthesizer triggered by Midi. It can learn the midichannel it listenes to. Has some individual outputs and two triggeroutputs. The mixer-faders have an led which flashes when the channel is triggered. Each channel is based on a Atmel microcontroller and has as few as possible additional electronic parts. Just a proof of concept for personal learning on µControllers.
The simple "one-Transisor"-VCA concept" in some modules and the very simple mixer with accent-input is shamelessly copied from the dr110. For the Accent I added a 'time' parameter which makes the decay of the levelemphasizing much longer."

TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Top 4 Instruments

"Some tweaking focused on the first 4 Drumchannels: 1. Bassdrum based on a lookuptable-envelope and a trianglewave, both sent out by PulsWidthModulation with analog VCA behind. 2. full digital Sid-Style-Snaredrum - very simple, just a tiny13 and a dual opAmp. 3. Hihat is alos very digital - besides shofted noise it can also make some spectra generated by 3 digital oscillators. And 4. TomTom, which sounds more than another Bassdrum. Depending on triggerstrength it can make 3 different pitches."

TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Bottom 4 Instruments

YouTube via stereoping
"Some tweaking focused on the other 4 of 8 Drumchannels: 5. Clap which can also make some Guirosounds, Its kind of burst generator triggering 2 analog Envelopes, sound source is digital noise or some multioscillator-spectra running through an analog VCA (quite a copy of the dr110-clap but with with digital brain). 6. is Cymbal which can also make some cowbell-sounds. The sound runs through a bandpass which is frequencymodulated by an LDR + an LED. The mode-dial can set sample/hold, LFO with different speeds, envelope up/down with differen speeds and fixed 5V. 7. is the simple but cute analog Maracas/Clave from Vermona ER-9 and last one can make 3 different sounds, based on triggerstrength: Clave (from CR5000) which sounds more like a nice 'bek' than a clave, another Clave (from TR808) with MUCH more parts and at last an "accidently-coming-out-as-another-Noise- Snaredrum"-Rim-Module from 808."

Day 1 - 21/06/2009: after expending some time on the evening playing with my new Ion, I've created a nice and flexible pad that I love to play. It goes thru reverb, delay, phaser and vocalmorph effects on the EMU soundcard. On the other hand, my Doepfer grooves with a sequence (based only on LFO's and envelopes) making noises, sirens and some kind of percussive sounds with also delay and reverb. I just loved the atmosphere created and recorded. No post treatment on the audiotrack."
