Yamaha QY10 QY-10 Sequencer Drum Machine Synthesizer

via this auction
Note the Novation MM10-X MIDI keyboard controller in the bottom pic. It looks like a BassStation, but it's not. It's Novation's first keyboard MIDI controller.

On the QY10:
"8-Track 8-Song Sequencer with Backing Tracks
The QY10 can record and store as many as 8 different "songs" containing up to 299 measures each. It has a total of 8 tracks: 4 Sequencer tracks and 4 Backing tracks, specifically set aside for chords, bass line, and rhythm accompaniment. The Backing tracks are useful, in that once a preset backing pattern has been chosen, chord changes can be made and the backing chords and bass line will be automatically harmonized to fit.

Programmable Panel
A micro-keyboard with transpose keys on the front panel allows notes and chords to be entered without any additional equipment (such as a full-sized keyboard).

Real-Time of Step Recording
The QY10's Real-Time recording feature allows direct recording, when a live performance feel is desired. A metronome function is provided to keep time. The Step Recording mode, allows music to be entered note by note, for precision, plus the capacity to program phrases that would be too fast or complex to actually play in Real-Time. Step Record mode also allows the programming of triplets, ties, slurs and other musical subtleties.

30 Voices
The PCM tone generator technology gives the QY10 30 different voices and 26 different drum and percussion sounds. Any of these can be assigned to the Sequencer, chord and bass tracks to provide "texture" to the overall sound.

Backing Patterns
The QY10 offers 76 basic Backing Patterns. The patterns, each including rhythm, bass, and 2 chord tracks, cover a wide variety of styles including jazz, funk, reggae, rock, new-age, salsa, country, pop, and more. However, in addition to the preset Backing Patterns, the QY10 allows the creation of custom Backing Patterns, which can be stored in any of 24 memory locations.

32-Note/28-Note Polyphony
The QY10 Sequencer offers 32-Note Polyphony while the tone generator has 28-Note Polyphony. The Sequencer can drive up to 32 notes at once via the internal tone generator and external tone generator if used. The internal tone generator has 28-Note Polyphony so it can play up to 28 notes and 8 different voices at once.

Editing Custom Creations
With the QY10, Customs Creations can be edited to taste, including the pitch of notes and their timing, insertion and deletion of notes and patterns, copying and moving measures, the "quantization" of tracks to tighten or loosen timing, and more.

MIDI Functions
In addition to allowing input from an external MIDI keyboard or other MIDI instruments, the QY10 outputs all sequence playback in real time via the MIDI Out Connector so that external tone generators and rhythm machines can be driven. In addition, the QY10 also allows sequence data to be "bulk dumped" to other MIDI sequencers and keyboards with built-in sequencer functions.

Other Features
The QY10 offers a built-in stereo headphone jack with volume control and a stereo line-out jack for direct connection to a stereo sound system."

YAMAHA CE20 FM Combo Ensemble

via this auction

"EXTREMELY RARE VINTAGE 1982 YAMAHA CE20 "COMBO ENSEMBLE" SYNTHESIZER (SERIAL #3642) WITH IT'S ORIGINAL CARRYING CASE, FULLY TESTED, IN GREAT WORKING CONDITION, AND NEARLY FLAWLESS COSMETICALLY! PURCHASED FROM A REPUTABLE TOKYO, JAPAN VINTAGE SYNTHESIZER DEALER AND HAND-CARRIED BACK TO THE U.S.A. (NOT CHECKED AS BAGGAGE).

ONLY PRODUCED FOR ONE YEAR, THIS KEYBOARD HOLDS A HISTORIC PLACE IN SYNTHESIZER HISTORY, AS IT IS THE PIVOTAL STEP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FM SYNTHESIS BETWEEN YAMAHA'S GS-1 AND THEIR LEGENDARY DX 7.

ONE PARTICULARLY UNUSUAL FEATURE OF THIS SYNTHESIZER IS THE "SLIDE CONTROL" TO THE LEFT OF THE KEYBOARD. I HAVE NEVER SEEN OR EVEN READ ABOUT A CONTROLLER LIKE THIS ON ANY OTHER SYNTHESIZER. WHEN PLAYING A MONO SOUND, THE "SLIDE CONTROL" BUTTON FUNCTIONS BOTH AS A "LEGATO" SWITCH (SO ATTACK ENVELOPES DO NOT RE-TRIGGER) AND ALSO ENABLES THE WHEEL, WHICH CONTROLS THE LENGTH OF THE "SLIDE". LIKE A "PORTAMENTO", THE CE20'S "SLIDE CONTROL" FEATURE ALLOWS THE PLAYER TO HOLD DOWN A NOTE AND ADJUST THE RATE OF GLIDE TO SUBSEQUENT NOTES IN "REAL TIME". IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO APPLY A CONSTANTLY CHANGING PORTAMENTO EFFECT, TO ONLY THOSE NOTES YOU CHOOSE, AS YOU PLAY!

ANOTHER GREAT FEATURE OF THIS SYNTHESIZER IS THE "SYMPHONIC" SWITCH WHICH ADDS A BEAUTIFUL EFFECT TO ANY OF THE VOICES THAT IS A CROSS BETWEEN A CHORUS, A PHASE SHIFTER, AND A LESLIE SPEAKER!

THE CE20 HAS TWENTY CLASSIC YAMAHA PRESET VOICES - FOURTEEN OF WHICH ARE MONOPHONIC: PICCOLO, FLUTE, OBOE, CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, TRUMPET 1, TRUMPET 2, TROMBONE, VIOLIN, CONTRABASS 1, CONTRABASS 2, ELECTRIC BASS 1 & ELECTRIC BASS 2. THE SIX POLYPHONIC PRESET ARE: BRASS, HORN, ORGAN, ELECTRIC PIANO, HARPSICHORD & STRINGS. ALTHOUGH NOT PROGRAMMABLE, THE CE20 OFFERS SOUND EDITING OF ANY OF IT'S PRESET VOICES WITH A "BRILLIANCE" SLIDER FOR TONE ADJUSTMENT, VIBRATO DEPTH, SPEED & DELAY SLIDERS, AND THREE "SENSITIVITY" SLIDERS - "TONE INITIAL", "TONE AFTER" & "VIBRATO AFTER" FOR INCREASING VELOCITY SENSITIVITY.

THE ORIGINAL VINYL/TOLEX COVERED CASE FASTENS WITH GOLD "GUITAR-CASE-STYLE" LATCHES AND BEARS A GOLD YAMAHA LOGO. THE CASE'S COPPER-COLORED FELT INTERIOR OFFERS TWO SIDE COMPARTMENTS OF IDENTICAL SIZE - ONE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE KEYBOARD COMPARTMENT. ONE OF THESE SIDE COMPARTMENTS WAS PRESUMABLY DESIGNED FOR A SUSTAIN PEDAL (WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION) AND THE OTHER COULD HOLD CABLES, ETC. WHILE THE CASE IS STURDIER THAN A "SOFT CASE" OR "GIG BAG", IT WOULD BE BEST CHARACTERIZED AS A CARRYING CASE."

CASIO VL-1 GLITCH SYNTHESIZER

YouTube via squidfanny. via this auction

"Vintage CASIO VL-1 Mini-Synth from the 1980's. Infamous for (amongst other things) Bleep-Core Digital Drums and Programmable ADSR. Now Circuit Bent (by Dave Squidfanny) with 8 Modifications and an array of super cool flashing lights..... All the usual MODS, plus some special Glitching and flashing lights -

Pich Knob - Essential MOD for basslines and pitch modulation.

Screaming Feedback modulator - Savage sweepable oscillator.

Pitch Envelope knob - Pitch based wave-shaping for the synth. Has 2 settings selected with a toggle switch.

Drum to Synth LFO - Use the Preset Rhythm patterns to modulate the Synth like a complex LFO.

Low Pass Filter - Housed on a soft touch knob on the front of the machine.

Insane GLITCH Knob - Modulate the sound into pure analog / digital chaos.... This a very dramatic mod which is always sure to make a memorable impact. Returning the knob to it's off position will instantly return the sound to normal. This makes the chaos very controllable.

The LCD screen has been replaced with an array of coloured LED lights which flash in time with the DRUMS........!

The Knobs and switches are mounted on Green PCB (circuit Board) for cool Industrial Glitch / Manga look.

The VL-1 is powered with 4 x Pencil batteries or a 6 volt mains adapter (not included).

Please note that the VL-1 is a noisy machine and this modified version is no exception. It will ideally need some EQ to remove the hiss."

Plan B Model 7 Panner/Xfader and Model 21C Mini Milton

via
Update via Erik, spotted on Muff's:
"Please notice the campy Milton Babbitt image [below]. The 21C is a fully functional Milton sequencer, albeit only one bank of eight out of the shoot. It's intention was however to create a low-cost option for having two sequential sources which I feel to be important and addresses something that popped up in the second rising of analog - 1 sequencer per system is fine. It's not! But we could not help but including the option of expansion and the unit ships with the code to support an expansion both vertically (more banks) or horizontally (more steps, up to 16) and both at once. When the page goes up a schematic will be provided for those who want to DIY the (very) simple expansion units, although they will be released as products in short time. You'll notice three jumpers on the engine board - these will route the operation to either 8 or 16 steps. The output of the 16 steps will be present at the main (master) output jack."
And on the Panner: "He showed me a panner too, an ELF one which can be used as a crossfader also and a switch when controlled by a gate signal. It's really sweet and the panning is great. Pete was telling me to point to the sound and I could. I've tried this with MAX it's not easy. It's not linear or exp. because none of these will get you the -3 down in the center... A passive panner could also be a crossfader. Vactrols will allow for gating and a passive signal path."

Update: It's worth noting in the Muff Wiggler thread, Peake volunteered to give Peter Grenader a hand soldering. I'm guessing this is Mike Peake, the main voice and driving force behind development of the Alesis Adromeda A6.

Flame MIDI Talkin Synth

via this auction

"The FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH is a small-sized MIDI-controlled sound module based on the analogue Speakjet ™ chip, produced by the U.S. company Magnevation LLC. Originally designed for basic artificially generated speech output in American English tongue it was then refined and further developed as an 8-bit sound module with speech-like sounds and synthetic robot voices as well as beeps, alarms, noise and retro-style sci-fi sounds. Due to the structure of the Speakjet ™ (with its complex sound synthesizer, preset sounds and serial interface) it offers an impressive range of possibilities. It contains 72 speech elements (allophones), 43 sound effects, and 12 DTM touch tones. The idea was to create sounds, patterns and sequences in the 8-bit style of the 80s or other retro sounds for making music instead of just simulating speech. Most allophones can be tuned and used tonally. The FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH contains two Speakjet ™ chips to produce a richer and more complex tonal variety as well as generating a pseudo stereo effect.

Since the Speakjet ™ has not originally been laid out for the purpose of making music it is actually not fully controllable via MIDI input, i.e.: once sounds are triggered they cannot be directly stopped by Note Off messages from a MIDI keyboard or a sequencer. Thus a MIDI-controlled audio tremolo has been implemented in the FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH virtually allowing MIDI control and enabling an easier integration into a MIDI setup. The FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH lets you play back preset words in its EXPANDER mode via an external MIDI keyboard or a sequencer. In addition you can use the FLAME MIDI TALKING SYNTH as a stand-alone MIDI controller since all controls and joysticks send MIDI control/change data to the MIDI-OUT connector."

"Once a year, analog synth enthusiasts gather to socialize and play rare and unusual musical instruments. I captured the May 2009 gathering with a Canon 5DmkII and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. I simply sat the Camera on a tripod, frame the shot as I would a photo, focused and captured.

The music was produced using a Euro-format analog modular, controlled by Volta. Aside from the drums (MOTU BPM), everything was analog."

One Step Closer: Apple iPhone OS 4.0 to Include Multitasking

via AppleInsider

"Apple this summer will go a long way towards silencing critics and catering to one of the most prevalent demands of its iPhone user base, when it introduces a multitasking solution through the handset's 4.0 software update that will finally allow several third party apps to run concurrently and in the background."

I'm guessing this will make it's way to the iPad. If you remember this post, I'm obviously pretty excited about the slate format, both Windows and the iPad. I have an iPhone and what makes it is how responsive it is to gestures. There's no lag. For me, the screen, however, is too small for a proper full featured UI in regards to editing and controlling synths, both internal and external. My biggest disappointment with the announcement of the iPad was that it would not support multitasking, so you'd be limited to running one audio or one controller app at a time. Now this may not be so much of an issue. My other grip was lack of ports, specifically a USB port for MIDI controllers, but now that OSC and some new hardware like Akai's SynthStation25 and iConnectMIDI may have this solved.
