Modded C64s for Sale - Not Allowed on Ebay?

Some pics via the re64 blog. Note the 909 and 808 styles. These and others are for sale. See the link for more info. An interesting side note is they also sent me an Ebay link for one, but by the time I clicked on it, the auction was gone. I mentioned it to them and apparently it was pulled for a very interesting reason:

"Yeah freaky - the owners of the Commodore brand took exception to me rebadging a commodore computer with my own label and reported a trademark infringement to ebay - like they're actually using it..! Real pain in the ass"

Will they be coming after others?

WaveSynth - Modulation (Vibrato) with Accelerometer

YouTube via crimsontechnology | May 21, 2009

Note the following description states this is a wavetable synth, but it doesn't appear to be so in the PPG/Waldorf sense. It looks more like a standard sample playback synth.
"WaveSynth is a wave table synthesizer wavetable keyboard application for iPhone / iPod touch with 128 preset sound tones and 1 drum set defined by General MIDI specification.
It is possible to play various musical instruments sound tone such as piano, guitar, trumpet, strings, flute, drums, percussions and so on.
The keyboard can be selected by 1 octave keyboard or 2 octave keyboard on the display. In every sound tone, most suitable octave is assigned automatically or to be chosen by manual.
In addition to normal keyboard play, various expressions could be added by the Pitch Bend Controller, Portamento, Mono Mode.
Vibrato(Modulation) effect is available if you shake the body."

This appears to only be a MIDI player. It would be cool if you could create your own sequences. I do like the layout with sixteen buttons for sixteen MIDI channels. The iPad/iPhone can become the ultimate direct to hardware sequencer.

VIDEO: INTRODUCING THE SLIM PHATTY

YouTube via MoogMusicInc | October 15, 2010
Note the size of it.
"Richard Devine meets the new Slim Phatty Analog Synthesizer from Moog.

Real Moog sound now fits your back pack and your budget. The Slim Phatty's 100% analog signal path, intuitive user interface, rugged construction and rich MIDI, USB and Control Voltage functionality make it a must-have for producers, touring musicians and DJs.

More info at www.moogmusic.com/slimphatty"

And the official press release:

"Slim Size Fits All

Introducing the Slim Phatty Analog Synthesizer Module from Moog Music

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (October, 2010) – Real Moog sound now fits your back pack and your budget. The Slim Phatty’s 100% analog signal path, intuitive user interface, rugged construction and rich MIDI, USB and Control Voltage functionality make it a must-have for producers, touring musicians and DJs. At just 17” wide, it goes where no other Moog has gone before. Earth-shaking basses, scorching leads and more are now housed in a high-quality instrument ideal for laptop artists and space conscious musical road warriors.

Based on the powerful Little Phatty sound engine, the Slim Phatty is the latest descendant of the iconic Minimoog Model D and features the classic Moog Ladder Filter, the touchstone of analog sound design. In addition to shaping the sound of its on-board oscillators, the Slim Phatty’s filter is a valuable production tool that can be used to process external audio, sweetening your favorite audio source with everything from smooth analog warmth through wet, resonant filter sweeps.

“Good things come in small packages – and the Slim’ is no exception” said Moog Product Development Specialist, Steve Dunnington. “Its small stature doesn’t take away from the massive sounds it can produce.”

The Slim Phatty’s convenient size makes it an ideal voice expander for your existing gear, with two oscillators of massive Moog sound that are always just a MIDI cable away. A new Tuning Scale feature and editor allows easy exploration of alternate scales and tunings. Microtonal, just intonation, quarter-tone, world music scales and more make the Slim Phatty an international traveler. Good thing it has a universal power supply!

In addition to the world of MIDI and USB gear, the Slim Phatty’s Control Voltage inputs give it unlimited realms of expression and sound design possibilities. “Modular synth” style patching with Moogerfooger effects processors, the CP-251 Control Voltage Processor and other Moog synths (even The Moog Guitar!) creates soundscapes previously available only on large modular systems. Connecting to the Etherwave Plus Control Voltage Theremin or the MP-201 Multi-Pedal adds unique and intuitive new modes of expression.

Shipping in the 4th quarter of 2010 and priced at $849, the Slim Phatty beefs up any table-top production environment and with the optional rack mount kit or wood side panels, it’s equally at home in a high-powered touring rack or a vintage synth set-up. Its low price, ergonomic design and Little Phatty compatibility also make it an ideal voice expander for the legions of Little Phatty owners worldwide."

First panels for Synthmonger's new modular

"These are all custom modules of my design with the exception of the awesome CGS Sequential switch. Originally I was going to resize the panels to fit Eurorack standards but that would leave a lil over 4x5 of unused metal, so each panel has two modules squished together.

These panels will not be for sale but I do plan on releasing euro-rack standard modules as soon as possible for purchase."

Kebu - To Jupiter and back (TR-606 + Juno 60 + Axxe + Logan demo)

YouTube via kebunator | October 14, 2010

"I wanted to learn how to use my Roland TR-606, so I thought the best way would be to compose a song with it. And here's the result!

The song was recorded live. No overdubs, performed in one go straight through!

The TR-606 sends external gate trigger-signals each time a high tom or low tom hit is activated. I muted the tom sounds and used the pattern sequencer for the low tom for controlling the arpeggiator clock of a Roland Juno 60 instead. The pattern for the high tom controls the gate to an Arp Axxe.

The Logan String Melody II is run through a EHX Small Stone phaser. Both the Juno and the Logan is sent to a simple delay. I would have wanted to have the song 100% analog, but my space echo broke down, so I had to use a digital delay (TC M300). All instruments are also fed more or less to a stereo spring reverb (Vesta Kaza RV-3). The output from the mixer is recorded with a stereo cassette deck. Mild EQ and limiting was used in the final digital mastering stage.

The song title? To me the song was an adventurous voyage, hence the title. :)"

Doepfer DARK TIME Sequencer Pics and Specs

via Doepfer. Note the DARK ENERGY to the right and blue or red leds in the bottom two pics and note.

"Dark Time is an analog sequencer that is planned in the first place as an add-on for the Dark Energy. But it may be used even in combination with other Midi, USB or CV/Gate equipment too. As the unit is still in the development state (as of October 2010) all specifications, prices and release dates are still without any obligation ! As soon as more detailed information is available it will be published here.

Features overview
* two rows with 8 controls each
* for each step:
o - rotary control (same knob type as Dark Energy)
o - red LED
o - three-position switch On/Off/Skip
+ On = trigger signal is active for this step
+ Off = no trigger for this step
+ Skip = step is skipped
o - three-position switch Stop/Continue/Jump
+ Stop = sequence stops here
+ Continue = sequence continues
+ Jump (as yet Reset):
# If only one of the 16 toggle switches is in the Jump position a Reset is carried out (i.e. sequence jumps to stage 1)
# If two or more of the switches are in the Jump position the sequence jumps to the next step with the switch in the Jump position and then continues from this position (until another step with the switch in the Jump position is reached and then the same procedure is carried out again)
* several operating modes:
o 1x16 (i.e. the two rows are daisy-chained)
o 2x8 (i.e. both rows run in parallel)
o custom mode (e.g. three times row 1 and the once row 2, probably not yet available in the first firmware version)
* several running directions:
o forward
o backward
o random
* several voltage / tuning ranges: 1V, 2V, 5V (corresponding to 1/2/5 octaves)
* quantization on/off/custom scale (custom scale probably not yet available in the first firmware version)
* transpose via switch (-1/0/+1 octave), Midi/USB or external CV input
* timing control, selected by a three position switch:
o internal via built-in clock oscillator with frequency and pulsewidth controls
o external via Midi/USB
o external via analog clock/start/stop
* analog interface for CV/gate/clock/Start-Stop (inputs and outputs, 3.5 mm miniature jack sockets)
* Midi interface
* USB interface (power supply via USB is not possible)
* basic parameters are set in the configuration mode (e.g. Midi channel for row 1, Midi channel for row 2, Midi clock dividing factor, custom scale, custom running mode)
* optically adapted to Dark Energy (same knobs, same depth and height, same wooden side plates and so on)
* Powered via external power supply (12 AC/min. 400mA) for 230V
* powering the device via USB is not possible, because the analog circuits require a dual voltage (+/-12V).

Date of Delivery: ~ end of 2010
Price: ~ Euro 450.00...500.00

All features, prices and delivery dates are still without obligation and are subject to change."

On the LED colors: "The final colors of the LEDs are not yet determined. Our current favorite is blue and four white LEDs for the momentary switches. We receive a lot of different suggestions concerning the LED colors but will be able to manufacture only one version. Only in exceptional cases we will manufacture versions with differing LED colors. These custom made versions will have additional charges and a longer delivery time (additional 4-6 weeks) because the units are not manufactured in-house. It does not make sense to replace the LEDs subsequently. Rather the final LEDs have to be assembled already during the production. As our manufacturer has only the standard LEDs in stock the special LEDs have to be ordered customer-related. Such orders will be treated as custom orders and it is not possible to return the devices (e.g. due to the European distance selling act law). We also ask for advance payment in these cases."

"Control Zone" by Mark Mosher (Live Rehearsal Video)

YouTube via newechoproductions | October 14, 2010

"One Man, One Theremin, One AudioCube :^) In this video I perform the instrumental electronic music song "Control Zone" off of my album I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS which you can download from http://markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/...

I'm routing the Moog Etherwave Theremin analog signal into Ableton Live and convert the pitch-to-MIDI in real-time then route the signal to various virtual instruments hosted out of Live. I then use a Percussa AudioCube in Sensor mode to add 4 additional dimensions of modulate in real-time. So 6 dimensions of spatial control. I'm changing the signal routing of the Theremin to route MIDI to different virtual instruments on the fly using the Novation Launchpad. I definitely went for "Hendrix" in parts of the song.

Jen SX-2000 analog mono synth

via this auction

"Extremely rare Jen SX-2000 analog mono synthesizer. Built in Italy around 1980, appears to be inspired by the early Japanese synths with a preset section and a manual section. Extremely resonant and wet filter, somewhere between a Korg 770 and Roland SH series low pass filter. I sought this synthesizer out because I had played one in a pawn shop about 5 years ago and was struck by the fact that it had the thickest and richest square wave bass I had ever heard. This is not hyperbole, everyone who plays this synth agrees it has the deepest bottom end they have heard."

Update via Flemming in the comments: "This synthesizer was also build into one of JEN's organs called the CAROUSEL C-450. I have seen it a couple of times and I actually considered buying the organ just to get the synthesizer (the organ itself is rather boring). But they weigh a ton and are too big to get into my car.

"Doepfer A-155 sequence modulates the Morph Y input, X knob is tweaked manually. Pitch is not moved, only the wavetables. Delay, and bass drum from Doepfer A-111-5 is added after a while. Bank C contains waveforms that are intended for LFO use, but they sound nice and gritty in audio range. No filters or VCA's used. It became a little tune, so it shall ingeniously be named "Terrarium Explorer".."

11 Another Kind of Acid

YouTube via 7thDanSound | October 14, 2010

"I was trying to make a monosynth out of the Moog Freqbox and Moog MUrF but it didn't quite work as expected. It did however turn out to be a nice kind of acid combo when controlled from the x0xb0x. The MUrF is in static filtering mode and just provides some distortion and light filtering. Since the filter in my x0xb0x is currently broken this makes for a good substitute. Enjoy!"

iCircuit - DIY Circuit Design for the iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows

iCircuit Introduction from Frank A. Krueger on Vimeo.

"iCircuit is the premier iPad and iPhone app for designing and experimenting with circuits. Its advanced simulation engine can handle both analog and digital circuits and features realtime always-on analysis. It is the perfect companion to students, hobbyists, and engineers.

You use it as you would any CAD program: you add elements, connect them together, and set their properties.

But iCircuit is unlike other CAD programs because it is always simulating. It's just like working with the real circuit. You do not stop to take a measurement or spend a lot of time configuring reports. Instead, you just play with the circuit as you normally would, with the power on!

There are over 30 elements you can use to build your circuits. The app has everything from simple resistors, to switches, to MOSFETS, to digital gates.

The app features a multimeter that you use to probe around the circuit to instantly read voltages and currents. If you want to see how a value changes over time, then you can add values to the built-in oscilloscope. The scope can simultaneously track many signals over time and features a touch interface to control the total time displayed and stacked and unstacked modes to easily compare signals.

Supported elements include:

* Signal generators, Voltage sources, and Current sources
* Resistors, Capacitors, and inductors
* Manual SPST/SPDT Switches, and SPST/SPDT relays
* Diodes, BJ Transistors, and MOSFETs
* Speakers, Buzzers, and LEDs
* ADCs, and DACs
* Logic gates: AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR
* JK and D Flip-flops

* Because iCircuit is a very CPU intensive application, it is recommended that you only use it on newer generation hardware including: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPads. However, it will still function on the older hardware.
