"Its features include 2 VCOs (triangle, saw, and square/pwm), noise, LFO, a multi-mode filter (low, high, and band pass), ring modulation, patch memory (20 patches), envelope generators for the VCOs, VCF, and VCA, and tons of modulation routing. It's an incredibly flexible synth and is great for bass or leads in unison mode (4 VCOs stacked up), or pads and atmospherics in duophonic mode. The sounds is somewhere between a CS80 and CS15 and it has lots of knobs for editing and sexy wood paneling. This one is missing a few slider caps, otherwise in very good functional and cosmetic condition. No noisy pots, switches, sliders, key contacts, etc..."

The Making of Billy Cogan's Ichabod Photo Gallery

I haven't posted on Ichabod in a while.
For those not familiar with this massive modular system, it was commissioned by Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins from George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular.  It's a one of a kind system. You can find the full gallery on Facebook here.  Be sure to check out the Ichabod label here on MATRIXSYNTH for more posts including video and audio. I never get enough of that Devils Tower pic. Devils Tower of course was made famous in the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind which featured Philip Dodds & and an ARP 2500.  And of course I do like George's T-Shirt in the second to last pic below on the delivery of Ichabod.  The bottom shot is the classic Ichabod Halloween pic (click through for a super size wallpaper shot).

An interesting side note I believe is that the upcoming Mattson SQ816 Sequencer will be the final module to complete the system.  Click here and scroll for some demos and pics of the SQ816 including the Division 6 eurorack format.

Update via George Mattson: "That is correct. Billy ordered two sequencers.  Billy actually started this and said he wanted a sequencer. I prototyped a simple, single-line 8-channel sequencer on a breadboard over a weekend to show him that I can indeed make one.

Stephen used it in one of his video’s [posted here]

I didn’t want to just make a run-of-the-mill step sequencer and wanted to design and build one that I wanted to have fun with. Hopefully, other people will too. Thus, the SQ816 has been three years in development."

"The Blacet Frequency Divider is a reissue of the original 1970’s model, with a few enhancements added such as a Dry/Mix control, Level control, selectable output low-pass filtering, and a power up reset for the second divider chain.
The Frequency Divider converts a monophonic analog signal applied to the “IN” jack into digital pulses which are divided by two sections of CMOS digital counters. One section, controlled by the six pots on the right of the module, mixes divisions 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 together to form complex sub octave waveforms. The Level and Mix controls blend these waveforms with the original signal. Low-pass filtering via a PCB dipswitch can be added in three levels if external filtering is not being used. The output signal is present at the lower “OUT” jack.

The second counter section, controlled by the rotary switch on the left of the module, divides the input signal by 2 thru 4096. For example, a 440 Hz signal divided by 4096 would result in a 0.1 Hz signal at the upper two “OUT” jacks. The “RST” input resets the counter to zero."

"The Mini Wave is a wavetable lookup type module that features 256 different waveforms stored in a digital memory arranged as sixteen “Banks” with sixteen “Waves” for each Bank. The selection of Wave and Bank is voltage controlled.

Each waveform consists of 256 samples or steps that are output by decoding an input voltage or waveform. Using a sawtooth input wave, the samples are output in sequential order, with the frequency tracking the input signal. Using a more complex input waveform allows for non sequential sample output with a more “distortion box” feel.

A slow speed input waveform allows complex envelope or LFO type signals to be output.

The Mini Wave can also be used as a quantizer, processing control voltage inputs to only output specific steps of control voltage.

This is a non modified Rev A version of this module. It has the stock EPROM, with an empty slot for another EPROM, switch selectable from the front panel. Blacet sells another EPROM for this unit you can add."

The voice boards are undamaged as far as i am aware and all filter chips and DCOs are on the board. the only work on this that has been done is the CPU board. It has been stripped back to reveal the PCB underneath that does not have too much damage. Please see the pictures below."

Oberheim Matrix 6 Editing

Published on Jan 6, 2013 AudioCentralMagazine·107 videos

"A frightening programming session on the nightmarish data entry of Oberheim Matrix 6. It seems an eternity, but in the Eighties this was the most common way to program the less expensive synthesizers: one parameter at time, first select then entering desired values!!!
God bless potentiometers and encoders (and Editor programs...)."

In my opinion it's not that bad actually. Everything is laid out in order, the first 10 parameters is DCO1, the next 10, DCO2, the next 10, VCF/VCA, and so on. There are no submenus. Everything is only one layer deep. You can see a pic of the parameters on the 6R in this current MATRIXSYNTH-B post. See the Patch Edit section in the bottom. You can also flip through parameters vs. having to enter the number for each. Sadly their is no slider for editing values like some other menu driven synths, so you have to button up, down or enter the value you want. Nothing beats knobs. On OS version 2.13 of the Matrix-6 you can map external MIDI controllers to each parameter. Access made a Matrix Programmer and you should be able to use other controllers that support MIDI Sysex including some for the iPad.

"Happy new year folks, this is a liitle song I started in the kitchen dropping some chords, melodies and jazz percussion into the ESQ sequencer then playing along with various parts (clumsily), trying to come up with a song. Levels are off the wall, especially the elec piano at high notes apologies! I really liked the chord sequence, kind of happy/summery sounding . The drums are from the juno G, also the E.piano , i'm playing the juno 6 lead and the rest is from the esq itself. I tried using the Roland vp330 vst but its so heavy on the CPU I had to record directly to cassette as ableton just couldn't handle such a powerful sound;)....erm no the vst is just not perfect but I dont mind, having the sound of the vp330 is good enough for me! Funny, i enjoyed recording to tape for a change..oh the memories:):)"

AE FOND KISS by Robert Burns

Published on Jan 5, 2013 copperleaves·57 videos

"I have known this song for many years, but I had always heard it sung by classically trained sopranos and tenors, so I never dared to sing it. A couple of weeks ago, I heard a rendition of it performed here on YT by Scottish popular singer Eddi Reader, and I loved it! So I decided to take a crack at it myself.

Robert Burns is Scotland's poet/ambassador to the world, and this song (only one of many that he wrote) is for me one of the most poignant songs of unrequited love that has ever been written. I'm not going to bore everyone with the history of this song. If you are curious about it, here is the Wikipedia entry that will tell you the whole story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ae_Fond_Kiss

The instrument I am playing in this video I call the "tibicen" (this is the Latin word for "piper"). I devised this instrument myself because I love to sing with the pipes but it is impossible to play them and sing at the same time. The tibicen is entirely electronic and consists of two parts (only one of which can be seen in this video). There is a keyboard "chanter" which sits on the knees of the performer and can play in any key over a range of many octaves. The other part is a pedal board similar to an organ (which is not visible in the video) which plays the drones, and can change keys and harmonies very much like the Irish uilleann pipes.

Part of the problem with pipes (and with the hurdy gurdy which I also play) is that they are extremely loud and their volume cannot be controlled by the player so they tend to drown out a singer. With the tibicen, every aspect of the sound, volume, slides, range, etc., can be controlled, and it is ideal for an electronic musician like myself."

EML ElectroComp 101 Synthesizer

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the listing: "This is a rare synthesizer serial number 522 out of 1000 made

Rather than list all of the EML101 specifications which are easily available online, I'd like to describe this particular synthesizer. I am the original owner and purchased this instrument in the mid-1970s. I went up to Vernon Connecticut, met Norman Milliard who was one of the owners of EML and picked up my instrument from the factory. I was intrigued with the amount of engineering that went into the construction of this instrument. For example, the way the instrument is constructed, the unit folds into itself to make a carrying case. So much of the engineering and construction was well thought out and was superior to what existed at the time. As a music educator, I used this instrument for demonstrations only. I have retired, and the instrument has been sitting in my house not being used and regrettably I must sell it.

Everything on this instrument is original. It is in working condition but because of its age and lack of use, some refurbishing is going to be required. The following are some examples of what would be required:

The original handle is deteriorating and doesn't feel very secure (this means replace it if you're set on using it. There are some typical rusty spots on the external metal hardware. Three of the original rubber feet are missing. There are some light surface scratches on the outside of the case and a small chip (or two) - check the pics. Several of the Alan – Bradley controls are going to need cleaning. I am sure that some additional internal cleaning on the keyboard will be required but all keys are level and play well / feel fine. These examples should give you some idea of what this instrument might need.

I will include a good amount of literature, too numerous to mention it all.

The owners manual of course is included as well as original patch diagrams sheets. Also included are factory directions such as tuning the oscillators as well as mods that the owner can make. The two mods I made were the addition of a switch to separate the high filter and low filter to create a band reject filter, and a separate external sampler input.

Most important is the inclusion of the schematics for the electronic circuitry. This wasn't easy to obtain, but at the end of EML’s run, thankfully they were willing to give up the schematics to an owner who was truly appreciative of all the work that went into designing this incredible instrument."

MARK JENKINS "Peter Gunn" from the CD "EX1GENE"

Published on Jan 5, 2013 MarkJenkinsMusic·22 videos

"MARK JENKINS 'Peter Gunn' from the CD 'EX1GENE'. Composed by Henry Mancini, arranged by Keith Emerson, performed by Mark Jenkins on the Yamaha EX-1. Drums, sound effects, fx, mixing; Apple Mac. Filmed and edited by Mark Jenkins. CD "EX1GENE" by Mark Jenkins out now through Amazon and www.markjenkins.co"

"'Peter Gunn', an award-winning TV detective show theme composed by Henry Mancini, became a staple of Emerson Lake & Palmer's live concerts in the late 1970's and Mark Jenkins first performed the piece in 1985. 'I liked my 1980's version but the opportunity to recreate the piece effectively using the same instrumentation as Keith Emerson but with the added benefits of the latest computer editing techniques and sound effects was very exciting', Mark explains. 'My most recent albums and live performances have all been of sequencer-based iPad music, so multitracking a quite demanding piece played entirely by hand again was a great experience'.

'Peter Gunn' is the first video track released to promote Mark's new CD 'EX1GENE'. 'A lot of the other tracks owe more to world music, krautrock and Brian Eno's ambient style, so this progressive rock piece makes a rousing end to the album. I'll be creating some more abstract videos though for the more chillout oriented tracks on the CD'.

Mark Jenkins will be in concert in the UK and overseas during 2013, though the EX-1, which weighs something over 480 pounds, will definitely not be appearing on stage...

Return of the Sigma

Published on Jan 5, 2013 spacemusicuk·7 videos

"Utterly shameless synth noodling.

I did this a few months back after digging my old Korg Sigma out of the spare room and dusting it off. I bought it secondhand in 1989, it was pretty old and beaten up already then, and it's never been serviced and has sat completely unused for the past 6 years or so. At first it didn't make any sound at all, but after leaving it on a while and wiggling all the pots a bit, it started to cough and splutter back to life. I really liked the noisy, slightly broken sound - the crackly filtered hiss makes it sound very woodwindy and reedy, like some weird alien durduk.

The Sigma is a marvelously expressive beast. Two X-Y joysticks, one controlling pitchbend and noise/vibrato and the other controlling high and low pass filters, and, unusually for a synth of this vintage, keyboard aftertouch controlling vibrato."
