Abstract Data ADE-10 Reactive Shaper Module

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The Reactive Shaper can process audio signals and control voltages and consists of three different stages which are set in series. Each section has an individual control and an attenuated CV input. All inputs are DC-coupled i.e. they accept slow CVs.

Stage 1 is a subtle wave shaper producing sounds between PWM and phasing. Nice for adding that PWM touch to waves which can´t be pulse modulated.

Stage 2 is more aggressive as it contains a wave folder which will clip the signal and fold back the clipped part back into the signal. this will "square up" your signal and add harmonics.

Stage 3 is a feedback circuit which will add more and more of output signal to it´s input the more you turn up the level.

As the three stages are set in series stage 1 will affect the behaviour of stage 2 etc. You can use a combination of the stages or use each separately. The ADE-10 works bst with symmetrical non-square signals like sine wave, triangle or sawtooth/ramp.

In addition the module has potentiometers for controlling input and output levels witth a gain or attenuation of 50dB.

Features

1 signal input, DC-coupled, maximal input level +/-10V
3 CV inputs, DC-coupled, max. input level +/-10V
1x DC- full-wave, will pass the entire signal i.e it´s is bipolar
1x DC half-wave, will let through only the positive part of the signal"

Manhattan Analog MA35 VCF & VCA Module

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The MA35 is an internally-coupled VCF and VCA based largely on the back end of the legendary Korg MS-10. The VCF section is based on the classic Korg35 filter architecture, implemented using discrete transistors rather than the original (and impossible to find) proprietary ICs. It is switchable between Lowpass and Highpass modes of operation, which can either be done manually using the toggle switch or with CV via the "mode" jack. There is also a two-channel audio mixer built in to the input. Modular-level signals will overdrive the inputs as you pass ~12:00 on the dial - stay below this threshold for a smooth, liquid sound or push past it for fuzzy screaming mayhem! The VCA section is based on the MS-10's 'single-transistor' design, which adds distinct color to the sound and is an important part of capturing the spirit of the original.

Care has been taken in the selection of period transistors and opamp chips to keep the character of the sound as authentic as possible. This is not a hi-fi module! It's a little raw and a little noisy - in all of the very best ways.

The MA35 is fully protected from reverse power connection. The proper orientation of the ribbon cable is indicated on the top copper layer of the pcb, just below the power header."

Manhattan Analog Mutinator Trigger Combiner Module

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"The Mutinator is a “human interface module” and can best be described as a multi-channel switched trigger combiner. It features 4 parallel channels, each with two switched inputs and a single output. Within each channel the inputs are combined using analog OR logic and sent to the output, whose activity is indicated by an LED. The operation of the switches is ON-OFF-(ON). In the ON position the corresponding input's signal passes to the combiner. In the OFF setting, that input is muted. The (ON) setting is known as ‘momentary-on’ - In this position the signal will pass to the output, but the switch will return to the OFF posision as soon as you release the switch lever. This allows you to more easily ‘play’ the switches in a performance situation.

Unlike some other trigger-combiner designs, this module contains active circuitry. Incoming pulses are reduced in amplitude by the logic section but an output amplifier compensates for this. In addition, the level of the incoming pulses is limited to protect the module. This means you can run any positive-voltage trigger or gate source in your studio into the inputs without fear of causing damage to the module. This limiter also prevents the Mutinator from producing an output voltage above ~10.2v, which makes the outputs safe for any other modules in your Eurorack modular synthesizer.

Please note that this module is designed to pass trigger and gate information only. It does not faithfully preserve the level of the input signal nor will it pass any voltage below 0v. It will not perform as expected with audio or bipolar control voltage signals."

Cumulus 1 [WIP] (Glitzerstrahl)

Published on Feb 12, 2013 GlitzerstrahlMusic·4 videos

"The starting point of a track made entirely with my modular rack. No MIDI or external sequencing but reverb was added while recording through Ableton Live.

The track is still being worked on so this video only shows the first version. I'll continuously post videos as parts are added, and that way you can see how the track builds up.

In essence what you hear is built up by an XAOC Moskwa sequencer modulating a Pittsburgh filter cutoff that filters a set of 3 separately tuned Bubblesound VCOb oscillators.

A Pittsburgh mixer is manually manipulated to change the mix of the three oscillators, and the resonance, QVC and cutoff of the filter is also manually tweaked during the course of the track.

The Attack and Release of the envelope (of which there is only 1 (TipTop Z4000)) is set randomly and gated by the Moskwa, and there is a slew limiter (Doepfer a-170) patched in between one of the oscillators, and in the path of the random voltage of the Release of the envelope.

Hope you like it!"

So i've added a bit to the Step Sister since yesterday that i thought was worth sharing. It now has a waveshaper that squares of the saw wave but also overdrives the input to the filter, yummy. I have also added the Attack and Release controls to the envelope that were mentioned in part 1. This test version is shown running 4 steps for a bit of variety but the finished version will be selectable up to 10 steps. Enjoy.

It should eventually be available to buy from my Etsy and Folksy shop and if its not nightmarishly complicated to build, a kit version too.

"Demonstrating synthesis of vowel sounds using the Grendel Formant Filter Eurorack module. This 100% analog filter allows voltage-controlled selection of English vowels from a 2-dimensional map. The map corresponds to the International Phonetic Alphabet vowel chart, a.k.a. the vowel trapezium.

In this video, an analog joystick with X and Y CV outputs is used to control the filter module. Two channels of MIDI-CV converter may also be used. The module is designed to accept CV sources with 5 volt range. Either -2.5 .. +2.5 volts or 0.. +5 volts can be used for optimum control. Wider CV ranges (up to +/- 10V) will not cause damage, but should be attenuated for best articulation.

Visualizations were made with a Tektronix TDS 350 digital oscilloscope in XY display mode, 1 volt per division.

The Grendel Formant Filter is made by Rare Waves (Austin TX)"

"multimode filters its own distinctive sound structure. Moreover, the MICRO MINIATURE with its many patch points well equipped to be controlled by the flexible step sequencer URZWERG to be and interact with the multifunctional MEGAZWERG.

In single mode, the MICRO MINIATURE produce with its dual-oscillator and the dual multimode filters not only typical analog bass and lead sounds, but also for a monophonic synthesizer sounds unusual. With fast connections created a patch can be transformed and signal modulations in order to reproduce the sound potential of the MICRO DWARF.

In conjunction with the other synths of DWARF-family or a modular system to grow the capabilities of the MICRO MINIATURE further.

Here is an overview of the areas of the MICRO DWARF:

The two oscillators include the four waveforms triangle, sawtooth, square and spike. VCO 2 instead of the spike has a noise generator. VCO 2 can be tuned an octave plus minus compared to VCO 1. A patch compound, the oscillators sync with each other. In addition, the signal can be picked separately from VCO 2 are used to filter modulation. A ring modulation is combined with the MEGAZWERG possible from which the RM signal can be fed back into the MICRO DWARF.

The two 12-dB variable-state, multi-mode filters have the mode low pass, band pass and high pass and notch (band-stop). The filters are serially connected, resulting in the same mode, a larger edge steepness. This value is variable, as the two cutoff frequencies can be moved via the Space controls against each other. With the combination of low-and high-pass results in a bandpass filter with variable width and separately controllable resonance. A patch connection, a parallel connection of the filter is possible. Then two offset bandpasses, a notch filter with a variable width, or a low-or high-pass filter can be realized with projecting bandpass. The response can be controlled for both filters to self-oscillation. The cutoff frequencies are controlled or jointly controlled by envelope. You can also move through the Space controls against each other. The modulation via LFO or the Mod input either affects filter 1 or both filters together.

Key Follow for a pitch-dependent opening of the filter can be produced by a simple patch connecting the key to CV Contour Mod or input.

Since both filters have separate inputs and outputs, the MICRO MINIATURE be used as a versatile dual-filter box for external audio signals.

The ADSR envelope is internally connected to the cutoff frequency of the filter. If a second ADSR envelope required, it can be from MEGAZWERG or a modular system patched to the MICRO DWARF.

The LFOs have four waveforms and a one-shot function. The selected waveform goes through after the gate pulse of the incoming note only one cycle and thus can be considered a simple envelope, about the pitch or the VCA can be used. LFO 2 has also a sample & hold mode.

There are connections to the internal modulation LFO to cutoff frequency, and the pitch of the oscillators or pulse width of the second VCO The speed of LFO 2 can be modulated over a CV input. Even so, the frequency of LFO 2 increase by a factor of 30 and reduce, so hereby extremely fast or slow modulations are possible.

The control signals of the envelope and the LFO can also be output and therefore can control functions of other analog synthesizers and modular systems.

The signaling pathway VCOs-VCF1/VCF2-VCA and conventional modulations are pre-wired internally. The MICRO MINIATURE thus can be played directly. All other connections are made using the patch sockets and can be operated on MICRO MINIATURE itself and from external devices are controlled or used.

About the MIDI input can be driven to the MICRO DWARF with a Keyboard or a DAW. In addition to the note data, data from the pitch wheel (+ / - 2 semitones) processes and the modulation wheel to control the cutoff frequency.

The MICRO DWARF has the dimensions 190 x 150 mm x 50.

Power is supplied via the included AC adapter."

 Description from vimeo: "I’ve devised a Frankenstein experiment, combining the greatest musical invention of all time, the Piano; with the coolest amusement machines ever conceived; Pinball, to create an interactive sound installation like no other; ‘Pinball Pianola’, a musical device constructed by replacing the keyboard, hammers and front paneling of an upright piano, with a pinball cabinet butted up perpendicular against its exposed strings. Embracing high and low culture this instrument allows virtuosos and wizards alike to pit their skills in a game where musical compositions are created as metallic balls jettisoned into the game clash with the pianos resonating wires. This experiment the first of in a series of individually crafted instruments I’m constructing at Artspace as part of my Australia Council music board project fellowship that introduce musical elements into the iconic game of pinball, making sound generation - not scoring - the game's main objective." http://dualplover.com/pinball/  This one in via Nath Null Object.

Playlist:

1. The Synthesis of Synthesis - "This is the introductory video for the Bob Moog Foundation/macProVideo series "The Foundation of Synthesis." In it, Marc Doty sets the stage for the intent of these videos, which is an integrative instruction which not only describes synthesizer function and operation, but also gives a historical foundation for the functionalities and their implementation."

2. The Synthesis of Synthesis- Sound - "No instruction in synthesis would be complete without some explanation of the physics of sound! This video is one of several videos which outline the physical principles upon which synthesis is based."

3. The Synthesis of Synthesis- The Hammond Novachord - "The progression of devices which led to the modern synthesizer is diverse and interesting. The Foundation of Synthesis covers a number of them which portray a progressive development. One of these synthesizer precursors was the Hammond Novachord, a tube- based keyboard device whose groundbreaking technology is still present in some synthesizers today. More than most, this proto-synthesizer resembled what we came to think of as the modern synthesizer."

4. Foundation of Synthesis- Oscillator Introduction - "The Foundation of Synthesis dives into synthesizer technology with the Oscillator— the origin of sound in synthesis! Marc leads us through the history of this device from its beginning— as a lightbulb!— to its implementation in electronic musical instruments."

5. Oscillators- Pulse Width Modulation - "Pulse Width Modulation is a pleasing aural effect generated by the voltage-controlled adjustment of the width of a square wave. In this Foundation of Synthesis video, Marc demonstrates this function on several classic synthesizers. The video includes an oscilloscope, which shows you exactly what is happening when the width of the square wave output of the oscillator is changed!"

6. Filter- Introduction - "In this part of the 3rd Tutorial of the Foundation of Synthesis, Marc outlines the history of the filter from its origin in the telephone to its application in electronic devices in order to give a firm understanding of how the filter came to be an important part of modern synthesizers. The filter is a function which removes harmonics from a sound. Since harmonics define the timbre of the sound, this is a fast and easy way to create new timbres."

7. Filter- Cutoff Control - "Adjustment of the cutoff point of the filter is such a popular process that it has spawned whole genres of music. In this video, Marc shows the sound and functionality of this particular aspect of the most popular module in the modern synthesizer."

8. Filter-Voyager Serial Resonance - "The Moog Voyager design of Bob Moog includes some unique and useful functionalities. In this video, Marc explores the dual-filter nature of the Moog Voyager by demonstrating some unique ways to apply its filter arrangement."

9. Control Voltage Explanation Part 1 - "For the average musician, control voltage is an abstract concept. Of all the aspects of synthesis, it seems to be the most confusing. In this video, Marc gives a straight-forward and easy-to-understand description of the functionality using concrete examples. With a firm grasp of control voltage, synthesis becomes considerably easier and fun!"

10. Control Voltage Explanation Part 2 - "Here is part two of a video where Marc gives a straight-forward and easy-to-understand description of the process and application of control voltage. With a firm grasp of control voltage, synthesis becomes considerably easier and fun!"

11. The Amp Introduction - "In this video, Marc gives us a basic history of what can be the least-exciting module in the modern synthesizer, but then goes on to show what can be done when this module includes a fair amount of functionality. The Amp is the last step in the synthesis process, and can give you a variety of power over the timbre you create!"

12. The ARP Envelope Follower - "The Envelope Follower is one of the most fun control functions to exist. It takes the amplitude of a given signal and converts it to a voltage. As the amplitude rises, the control voltage rises. This can be used to control any function in the synthesizer which can be controlled via control voltage... which, in an analog synth, is most of them! In this video, Marc gives a demonstration of this under-implemented synthesizer function using the ARP 2600."

13. Designing Timbres- Introduction - "This video introduces the "Designing Timbres" tutorial by explaining exactly what is going to happen within it. It features some of the music and synthesizers used in the rest of the tutorial."

14. Designing Timbres: Major/Minor Chord - "'It doesn't play chords!' -This is the complaint most heard in regard to monophonic analog synthesizers... but wait... if you have three oscillators and some awesome functionality like the Moog Voyager, there is an answer to this complaint. In this video, Marc shows you how you can generate a sort of controllable polyphony using the monophonic Moog Voyager!"

15. Designing Timbres: Duality - "In this video, Marc demonstrates the the functional benefit of a synthesizer like the Yamaha CS-15, which is essentially two different synthesizers stacked together. By altering settings in each division, interesting timbres can be created."

Solvent - Themogene (I Dream Of Wires theme)

"'Themogene (I Dream Of Wires theme)', from the forthcoming 'I Dream Of Wires' soundtrack album by Solvent, coming fall 2013.

'I Dream of Wires' is an upcoming, independent documentary film about the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer — exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. Written and directed by Robert Fantinatto, with Jason Amm (Ghostly International recording artist Solvent) serving as producer and co-writer, I Dream Of Wires is set to premiere spring 2013.

"Unit has MIDi I/O on mounted Dinsync jacks, (see pics), a total of (3) additional outputs for the Drums (Kick, Snare, HH) so all sounds can be recorded on individual tracks, nice! Also the Drums have the Tone and Decay mods, which is what makes it sound similar to an 808. Two pots control the decay of the Bass and Snare, and two switches for HH and Snare Noise/Decay. PAste this phrase into youtube: MONOMOD - Korg Monotribe Mod / Hack [posted here] to watch a video demonstarting the mods/sounds. (this is not my video, but the mod/sound is the same). Below I have posted some info on the MIdi Mod taken from Gameboy Genius' Blog [link].

Details
Sync: It will both send and accept MIDI sync, start and stop messages, meaning the sequencer can be reset over MIDI, which can’t be done remotely if you’re only using the regular sync input.

Notes: It will send and receive notes within the limits of the sequencer. It’s using channel 1 for notes. Notes outside these limits will be ignored. It doesnot react to varying velocities. It does however react to pitch bend MIDI messages and is able to record and play back pitch bend in flux mode! I don’t have MIDI out hooked up at the moment, so I can’t confirm this right now, but I’m assuming it also transmits MIDI pitch bend messages when it plays notes in flux mode.

Drums: It’s using the standard General MIDI specification for drums, which means the following notes on MIDI channel 10.
Name Note number Note name GM drum name
BD 36 C1 Bass drum 1
SN 40 E1 Snare dum 2/Electric snare
HH 42 F#1 Closed hi-hat
Control change messages (CC): It can send and receive CC for all the knobs and switches marked green above. The parameters are mapped as follows:

Name CC number Values GM parameter name
LFO rate 16 – General purpose controller 1

LFO int. 1 – Modulation wheel
EG shape 80 32=decay
64=sustain
96=attack General purpose controller 5

LFO target 81 32=VCO
64=VCO+VCF
96=VCF General purpose controller 6

LFO mode 82 32=Fast
64=Slow
96=1shot General purpose controller 7

LFO wave 83 32=Saw
64=Triangle
96=Square General purpose controller 8"
