G-Storm Electro 101-VCO Version 2 Roland SH-101 Oscillator Adaptation

"The 101-VCO has been re-tooled in 12HP! Version 2 continues its authentic realization of the Roland SH-101 Oscillator adapted to Eurorack: that lovely Sub-Octave Generator, that snowy Noise Generator, an integrated Mixer section to bring all the waves together.

Now in revision 2: Improved tuning stability using power rail voltage references. Simplified tuning via coarse/fine tune knobs. Individual waveform outputs without need for any expander module.

101-VCO expands the original SH-101 features to reveal more potential of the 3340 chip: Triangle wave and exponential FM. And 2 flavors of Linear FM: Lo Range to find those vibrato sweet spots, and Hi Range for full-on Linear FM madness. Expand the palette of original sounds using an external CV signal for Pulse Width Modulation that is summed against the initial Pulse Width amount. While the initial PW amount can go right up to the edge of vanishing, PWM can take the Width right down to 0% up to 100% for complete cancellation.

Great care was taken to keep the 101-VCO fully analog circuit as close to the original as possible. Featuring an Alfa AS3340 re-issue chip at the core of the design, surrounded by eight 20mm slide pot controls. With the conventional coarse/fine tuning knobs it will provide full audio range, whether using the v/oct input or not.

Every 101-VCO is meticulously hand-crafted in limited quantities, not mass-produced, and ready to rock your modular world. Includes 16-pin-to-10-pin power connector cable.

Coarse Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency

Fine Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency, +/-6 semitones range

FM Slider | Amount that an external signal will modulate the frequency

FM TYPE Switch | LO for vibrato, HI/EXP for more dramatic frequency modulation

PULSE WIDTH Slider | initial Pulse Width amount

PULSE WIDTH MODULATION Slider | The amount that an external signal will affect pulse width

SOURCE MIXER Sliders | Adjusts the amplitude amount of each waveform going to the MIX output

SUB-OCTAVE Switch | Select between -1 octave Square, -2 octave Squrare, -2 octave Narrow Pulse

V/Oct Jack | Pitch Initial Frequency input for connecting keyboard controllers or sequencers

FM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate Pitch here, such as LFO or envelopes

PWM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate the Pulse Width here, again LFOs are typical

Individual Waveform Output Jacks | These jacks always output their buffered, DC-coupled signals regardless of Source Mixer settings

Mix Output Jack | This is the combined waveform output of the Source Mixer

TUNE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the initial oscillator frequency

SCALE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the v/oct tracking of the oscillator"

Ambient drone jam across the South Downs via modulated light beam with SH101 Crave MC101 birdsong

video upload by drone-in-the-woods

"Original drone jam in Brandy Hole woods with SH101 and Crave. The Crave was triggered using the 101's internal sequencer and this was the recording with all the birdsong.

The audio from this session was then transmitted the following day, via light, from Butser Hill to the Trundle, 12 miles away. The audio modulates the intensity of a bright red LED and a lens is used to form a beam. The white flashing light on the Trundle is the locator for the LED transmitter, once the LED is pointing towards the white light, the scope is used to align the receiver's photo diode. The output from the photo diode is then converted to audio and played through the Cube. This was recorded live with additional sounds from the MC101.

Future plan is to build a couple of two-way transmitters/receivers, so that light-speed communication can be established between the hilltops. Greater distances are being tested too.

Tales From the Hedge No.3 - acid hedge-hop in the forest with no snow! Synths outside: MC101 TD3

video upload by drone-in-the-woods

"Thought I'd try to get a video with some snow falling but whilst the rest of the country received a dusting, here on the South Downs it just rained. It was so warm that I could play without gloves on!
This was my rehearsal take but as you can hear at the end, it had started to rain and so this is what I got before packing up :)

I'm running the 101 through the looper so that I can record parts into it, freeing up tracks on the 101 for other parts, whilst also getting to use the reverse feature.

Oh and nearly forgot...the small mound at the end of the video is a tumulus - a small barrow probably linked to the iron-age hill fort on the Trundle close by.

Behringer RD-9 Doing Slower Tempo

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2021

The Behringer RD-9 Rhythm Designer drum machine just rolled in the door.
Today I'm showing 3 little vignettes of what it sounds like doing slower tempo stuff with SH-101, TD-3 and some eurorack stuff.

3 parts:
0:00 90 bpm w/ Roland SH-101. I put fx processing on some of the individual outs. You might like headphones or monitors to get the full sound.
1:18 80 bpm w/ Eurorack + Keystep Pro. RD-9 through Big Sky then DBX 160A compressor
3:01 100 bpm w/ TD-3. RD-9 low tom getting lo-shelf at mixer then Reverb + Delay. Some use of Probability and note-repeat (ratchet) on the closed hats.

The wave designer features were not used.
No mastering or post processing. This recording could have used some.
The RD-9 definitely has punchy transients, I kept turning my record
level down but still peaking my Tascam DR-05. So the average level
sounds kinda low to me."

Jamming on Korg Mono/Poly and Roland SH-101 | CONFORCE

video by Conforce

"A simple recent jam showing how I sequence my Korg Mono/Poly and Roland SH101 with the Elektron Analog 4 Keys. Drums come from Live's Drum Rack. NO talking over the music, recording comes from Ableton Live. Drums were later added. This is not the Behringer Monopoly, this is the real deal. Not saying the Behringer is a bad synth.

Check the slides in the video for additional information on the gear and used plugins and processing! I give away some secret weapons there! Don't lose attention."

Hermann Seib Joins Behringer/Music Tribe Wave Synthesizer Development Team

The official announcement:

PPG and its Wave synthesizers have been the brain child of the industry icon Wolfgang Palm and have graced the stages of artists like David Bowie, Jean Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Stevie Nicks, Pet Shop Boys, Mike and the Mechanics, and Stevie Wonder just to name a few.

After the announcement of Behringer and Music Tribe to look for collaboration partners for the development of the next generation Wave hybrid synthesizer, we have been fortunate to gain a legendary engineer to the team – Hermann Seib who has been deeply involved in the PPG Wave history. But hear from the man himself:

About Hermann Seib

“I'm a software programmer/analyst living in Vienna, Austria and have loved playing and creating music throughout all my life. I started playing guitar at age 12 and when the Roland SH-101 became available, I got one and was instantly hooked. But as for most people, there came a point where I had to decide whether I want to become a musician or a programmer. Computers won hands down so I never became a great guitar player and instead I practiced my programming skills instead. These shiny new home computers that just became available were simply too fascinating – and they sustained my life ever since.

PPG and I have a rather long common history. I first saw the original press release for the Waveterm A in 1982 and immediately wanted one. Unfortunately, I also couldn’t afford it as I was at just starting my career.

Around 1987, I was finally able to buy a used Wave 2.2/Waveterm set. Since that time, I have become a fan of these machines and know pretty well how they work. However I'm much more of an engineer than a musician and to me, the Wave synthesizers are "computers with attached tone generation circuits". Around 2000, I started to reverse engineering their operating system, so that I could understand how they work from a computer perspective. It took me quite a while to understand the sound generation side of the things and while I still wouldn't say that I've fully mastered every detail, my understanding was good enough to create an upgrade to the original V6 software. The result was version 8.3, which is a commercially available upgrade.

Around 2000, I became involved with Paula Maddox and Dave Forward in a project called "Waveterm C". The idea was to recreate the Waveterm in a more modern PC running Windows version and use a USB interface to communicate to the Waves/EVUs/PRKs. Well, we got the software side up and running, for which I was responsible for and it worked to a point where you could create wavetables and transient sounds. The USB-based hardware interface worked quite well, too, but unfortunately the project never became mature enough to be launched.

https://www.hermannseib.com/waveterm/

I also created WaveSim, my simulation of the famous Wave/EVU, which was first only as a standalone Windows program and later available as VSTi as well. Wolfgang Palm was aware of these activities for quite a while and in 2008, he contacted me. We exchanged ideas and he helped me understand some details of the Wave synthesizers, which resulted in further WaveSim improvements. Wolfgang then went on to create lots of new, vastly improved wavetables that could be loaded into WaveSim which can be found here.

https://www.hermannseib.com/english/synths/ppg/wavesim.htm#palm

Later in 2012, Wolfgang became interested in porting his PPG WaveGenerator, which was only available as iOS Plugin, to VST and Audio Unit on Windows and Mac OS - a project I was heavily involved in. Subsequently I entered similar collaborations on Wolfgang’s other PlugIn creations such as the PPG Wavemapper 2, PPG Phonem, and PPG Infinite.”

Why did you decide to join the Behringer Wave project?

“My main motivation is to help recreate the Wave to ensure it gets as close as possible to the original, as the legacy and “soul” of this synthesizer is very dear to me. And because it’s blue 🙂. I am very much looking forward to collaborating with the Behringer engineering team and participate in the testing and comparison with the original unit since I have a deep understanding of the original code the makeup of the unit. We’re currently discussing the development of an app for wavetable management. I am very excited to be part of the Behringer Wave synthesizer project to make sure the legacy of this legendary synthesizer will live on.”
