Nonlinearcircuits VCO Demo

"This is a demo of an older Nonlinearcircuits VCO, based on a Mikulic/Electronotes core with phase sync and pan-pulse circuitry from the Aries AR-338.

The video starts with a sequence, and scope shots of four of the five waveforms the VCO puts out. I didn’t bother with the triangle, but there is a pulse, then saw, then pan pulse and processed saw. These are eventually blended together, and then the left side VCO is faded in. This one is hard synced to another VCO. The equipment list is at the bottom of the description.

The PCB is not designed for Eurorack so I built a dual version to fit them behind a double panel. I originally built it in 2015, made a new panel in 2018, and it stopped working shortly after that. Each VCO required 50 hookups, so 100 wires, 200 solder joints. Ouch!

When it failed, for no apparent reason, I removed all of the point-to-point wiring, couldn’t figure out what happened, and put it aside for quite a few years. If only I had known then what I know now, the failure was a simple IC problem. I had purchased TL074s from eBay that turned out to be pirate versions. It would’ve been a one minute fix. I decided to tackle it again recently, and re-soldered all of the wires. Unfortunately, I used crap wire, so off those came, and I did it again! Still had some issues but with substantial help from John at PM Foundations, we were able to bring it back to life.

Synth Jams I is a compilation of tracks recorded live using analog and digital synthesizers and drum machines. The songs were created from improvisations with different instruments and were captured practically the moment after the creation. The performances have been posted on YouTube over the last 3 years.

With influences from the songs and the timbres of artists like Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Erik Norlander and Kebu, besides several works of electronic / instrumental music, the tracks of the album do not have a common style, but they share a main element: the sounds created with synthesizers.

In this process, the idea was to interact with the instruments, create and manipulate sounds in real time. It was also part of the plan to leave the computer and music production software out of this process. Therefore, anything that could not be played simultaneously live was performed by a MIDI sequencer.

Update: some pics and details captured. I made the mistake of trying to capture them all and then realized how many were listed. :) I ended up switching to the more esoteric models. Quite a few have never been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before. What's a little bit interesting, is only two new labels were needed, one for Domino and one for Side-Kick-Er. All other brands have been featured before. See the labels at the bottom of this post. Side note: Blogger limits the number of characters to 200 for labels, so I wasn't able to capture them all for this post. You can always search for the brand names featured for more. I assume most do this anyway. The labels are more for maintenance and for finding posts that may not feature brand names in descriptions.

"In the late 90's Korg came out with the Electribe series marketed to groove box producers seeking an affordable setup. One of these boxes turned out to be the ER-1, a quite capable analog modeling drum machine. If you couldn't afford a 909, 808, or other such classics this was not a bad way to go. With the ER-1's fully programable and automatable features you could get some unique sounds not heard of by other machines. The sequencer was built after the Roland TR series making it a highly intuitive and powerful little box that you can get for a decent price even today."

The BOSS Handclapper is not an effect pedal, per se. Its purpose is to produce handclap sounds. It does so when you hit that blue rubber pad with a stick, or with your hand, whichever is handier.

The circuit inside is IDENTICAL (save for the addition of a couple of external pots to adjust some sound parameters that are permanently set in the 808) to the handclap circuit in the legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine!

Boss Handclapper HC-2 MIDI mod

"Dieser Handclapper wurde in seinen Regelbereichen erweitert. Zusätzlich wurde auch ein MIDI IN sowie eine blaue Power LED eingebaut. Der Handclapper ist auch über das Berührungsempfindliche Feld spielbar. Schaltungstechnisch wurde er an den TR-909 Clap angelehnt und klingt auch genau so. Durch die Regler ist hier im Gegensatz zum original TR-909 Clap ein größerer Tonumfang möglich. Mittels "Dry" Regler kann der Clap getuned werden (Tonhöhe). Der "Hall" Regler ermöglicht ein variables Ausklingen. Der "Sens" Regler bestimmt die Anschlagsempfindlichkeit des berührungsempfindlichen Feldes."

MFB 522 and Behringer Tweakalizer Demo

"Just a quick demo of the MFB 522. I like the demos currently out there (in fact, they're a big part of the reason why I ended up buying one) but they don't really do a good job of showing what this thing can do when you effect it heavily like many of us who would be interested in owning the 522 would end up doing to it. As kind of a bonus, this demo also shows what the Tweakalizer can do when used outside of a DJ context. For this video, the 522 is being run through a UM-300 Ultra Metal distortion and then into the Tweakalizer. I didn't record the audio to the computer, but rather recorded the audio with the camera. The reason for this is simple: I am fat and lazy. I didn't feel like going in later and manually resyncing the video to the audio with editing software. If you need somebody to blame, I can point you to the nearest McDonald's for making me fat and lazy. That being said, I hope you enjoy this video.

Some thoughts on the 522: This drum machine has been purported to be similar to the Roland TR-808 in it's sound. I've never used an 808 myself so I can't compare, but on it's own it's pretty decent. It's got a lot of snap and pop to it and is extremely raw. Being analog, it handles effects differently than digital drum synthesizers, so it's more of a different flavor than the MachineDrum, ER-1, Attack, and the like. The kick drum has some interesting range to it. It doesn't quite thump like your typical 909 kick, but I doubt that anybody who buys one of these is looking for it to do that. The cowbell kinda leaks through the amp gate (as you can hear in the video) but it's only really noticeable if you distort the hell out of the signal. Using the volume control for the cowbell, this problem can be remedied or even used creatively. I wish it had more ways to shape the sounds, but being a synthesist primarily, it could have as many knobs as my modular and I'd still complain. On the subject of knobs, one of the biggest complaints one hears about this device is the tiny knobs. I'll admit at first, they're a bit of a pain, but you get used to them real quick. The sequencer isn't quite as straightforward as one would ask for, but it suffices. My only real complaint with this drum machine is the lack of a MIDI thru/out. Because of this, you can neither sequence other instruments with the 522 nor use it as the master clock if one were so inclined. The sequencer can be synced to external MIDI signals though, and for those who like to sequence with external sequencers, the MIDI spec is very nicely done so that I was even able to play the drums with my guitar-MIDI converter with ease. All in all, this isn't a drum machine I'd recommend to everybody as it's targeted towards a specific market, but if you're in the need for an 808 soundalike that can do it's own thing, at this price, it's kind of a no-brainer. Yes, there are some compromises made, but with the low cost of this unit, it's expected."
