NOT NAMM: FunkBox Drum Machine iphone app demo
YouTube via syntheticbits
"Demo of the FunkBox Drum Machine iphone app from Synthetic Bits. FunkBox is a pocket-sized emulation of classic vintage beatboxes, along with all their dirt and quirks. Grab a Funkbox and get busy making yourself some funky beats. Available now from the Apple iTunes iphone app store!"
on iTunes here:
Official Press Release:
"Sometime late last night the FunkBox Drum Machine dropped on the iTunes App Store, bringing some much needed fun and funk to grateful humans across the planet Earth. The latest release from iPhone developers Synthetic Bits, this app brings all the sound, feel and features of a vintage drum machine to your iPhone, without letting the slick iPhone interface detract from the quirky charm of the original boxes blinky lights, clicky buttons, and sticky sliders.
"Putting in all the most useful parts of a classic beatbox was important, but what we really wanted to do was capture the real feel of using these things. They aren't cut and dry and precise - they are quirky, they're dusty, they're funky." says Art Kerns of Synthetic Bits. "Mostly we tried to make something that people could have fun just playing around with, because it can have all the features in the world, but if it isn't fun you'll never actually use it."
The idea for FunkBox came while Art was working on recording a retro-styled electronica album (Submodern's 2009 release "Slowburn") where he used an assortment of old vintage drum machines from the 70's and 80's. Rather than mousing around with the latest drum plugins, or triggering samples from within a modern digital audio sequencer, he sat down and recorded all the beats for the album using those original dusty, finicky, and funky decades-old beat boxes, giving him a new appreciation for their quirky interfaces, classic sounds, and limited but inspiring feature sets. Synthetic Bits' goal in making the FunkBox app was to create something similarly fun, funky, and easy to use.
"It's cool because you don't have to be an electronic musician to enjoy this thing," explains Synthetic Bits' co-founder Chris Kerns. "I didn't have any experience with drum machines and still had a lot of fun messing with the different beats and boxes in there, even if I didn't understand what everything did at first. And then when you're ready, you can also get a little deeper and really tweak things."
FunkBox brings everything you need to make your own dirty, funky beats on your iPhone, anywhere you go. A variety of preset beat patterns, tempo adjustments on the fly, classic drum box sounds, a live mixer, and for those who want to really get in there a classic x0x style drum programming grid. Beat heads everywhere can use the Funkbox to drop dirty beats sampled from Synthetic Bits personal collection of coveted vintage drum machines: the Roland TR-808, Roland TR-909, Roland TR-606, Roland CR-78, Maestro Rhythm King MRK-2 (the drum machine that Sly Stone nicknamed "the Funkbox"), and Korg ER-1. Yep, all the classic beatboxes that were used on all your favorite old school electro, techno, hip hop and synthpop tracks, and that are still being heavily used and namedropped to this day by artists like Beck ("Bangin' like an 808..."), Outkast ("I know y'all wanted that 808..."), the Beastie Boys ("...nothing sounds quite like an 808!"), and others.
"I was just trolling around the iTunes App Store this morning, and realized something was different," observed Chris. "Do you smell that? I think someone just brought the funk."
The FunkBox Drum Machine is available for download in the "music" section of the iTunes App Store today."

Nonlinearcircuits VCO Demo
video upload by Randy Piscione
"This is a demo of an older Nonlinearcircuits VCO, based on a Mikulic/Electronotes core with phase sync and pan-pulse circuitry from the Aries AR-338.
The video starts with a sequence, and scope shots of four of the five waveforms the VCO puts out. I didn’t bother with the triangle, but there is a pulse, then saw, then pan pulse and processed saw. These are eventually blended together, and then the left side VCO is faded in. This one is hard synced to another VCO. The equipment list is at the bottom of the description.
The PCB is not designed for Eurorack so I built a dual version to fit them behind a double panel. I originally built it in 2015, made a new panel in 2018, and it stopped working shortly after that. Each VCO required 50 hookups, so 100 wires, 200 solder joints. Ouch!
When it failed, for no apparent reason, I removed all of the point-to-point wiring, couldn’t figure out what happened, and put it aside for quite a few years. If only I had known then what I know now, the failure was a simple IC problem. I had purchased TL074s from eBay that turned out to be pirate versions. It would’ve been a one minute fix. I decided to tackle it again recently, and re-soldered all of the wires. Unfortunately, I used crap wire, so off those came, and I did it again! Still had some issues but with substantial help from John at PM Foundations, we were able to bring it back to life.
Sequence – Pamela’s Workout, Analogue Solutions Oberkorn, NLC VCO, PM Foundations 3080 VCO, Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR, Bastl A B C (X2), Frequency Central Waverunner (X2), ALM Pip Slope, d:Machinery Red LFO, PM Foundations Mod+

MFB 522 and Behringer Tweakalizer Demo
YouTube via FatSynthDude
"Just a quick demo of the MFB 522. I like the demos currently out there (in fact, they're a big part of the reason why I ended up buying one) but they don't really do a good job of showing what this thing can do when you effect it heavily like many of us who would be interested in owning the 522 would end up doing to it. As kind of a bonus, this demo also shows what the Tweakalizer can do when used outside of a DJ context. For this video, the 522 is being run through a UM-300 Ultra Metal distortion and then into the Tweakalizer. I didn't record the audio to the computer, but rather recorded the audio with the camera. The reason for this is simple: I am fat and lazy. I didn't feel like going in later and manually resyncing the video to the audio with editing software. If you need somebody to blame, I can point you to the nearest McDonald's for making me fat and lazy. That being said, I hope you enjoy this video.
Some thoughts on the 522: This drum machine has been purported to be similar to the Roland TR-808 in it's sound. I've never used an 808 myself so I can't compare, but on it's own it's pretty decent. It's got a lot of snap and pop to it and is extremely raw. Being analog, it handles effects differently than digital drum synthesizers, so it's more of a different flavor than the MachineDrum, ER-1, Attack, and the like. The kick drum has some interesting range to it. It doesn't quite thump like your typical 909 kick, but I doubt that anybody who buys one of these is looking for it to do that. The cowbell kinda leaks through the amp gate (as you can hear in the video) but it's only really noticeable if you distort the hell out of the signal. Using the volume control for the cowbell, this problem can be remedied or even used creatively. I wish it had more ways to shape the sounds, but being a synthesist primarily, it could have as many knobs as my modular and I'd still complain. On the subject of knobs, one of the biggest complaints one hears about this device is the tiny knobs. I'll admit at first, they're a bit of a pain, but you get used to them real quick. The sequencer isn't quite as straightforward as one would ask for, but it suffices. My only real complaint with this drum machine is the lack of a MIDI thru/out. Because of this, you can neither sequence other instruments with the 522 nor use it as the master clock if one were so inclined. The sequencer can be synced to external MIDI signals though, and for those who like to sequence with external sequencers, the MIDI spec is very nicely done so that I was even able to play the drums with my guitar-MIDI converter with ease. All in all, this isn't a drum machine I'd recommend to everybody as it's targeted towards a specific market, but if you're in the need for an 808 soundalike that can do it's own thing, at this price, it's kind of a no-brainer. Yes, there are some compromises made, but with the low cost of this unit, it's expected."

BOSS HAND CLAPPER HC-2
via this auction
"Made in Japan (1983)
Produces a hand clap sound that is adjustable with sens, dry and hall controls.
Produces sounds simular to legendary TR-808 & TR-909 Drum machines!
The BOSS Handclapper is not an effect pedal, per se. Its purpose is to produce handclap sounds. It does so when you hit that blue rubber pad with a stick, or with your hand, whichever is handier.
The circuit inside is IDENTICAL (save for the addition of a couple of external pots to adjust some sound parameters that are permanently set in the 808) to the handclap circuit in the legendary Roland TR-808 drum machine!
External input jack for triggering from other drum machines with trigger out.
The unit can runs off a normal Battery (9v) or with a mains adapter."

Drum Box: Korg Electribe ER-1
Published on Nov 8, 2013 my4trackmachine·110 videos
"In the late 90's Korg came out with the Electribe series marketed to groove box producers seeking an affordable setup. One of these boxes turned out to be the ER-1, a quite capable analog modeling drum machine. If you couldn't afford a 909, 808, or other such classics this was not a bad way to go. With the ER-1's fully programable and automatable features you could get some unique sounds not heard of by other machines. The sequencer was built after the Roland TR series making it a highly intuitive and powerful little box that you can get for a decent price even today."

"Another short session with the TriggerMidiRocket running the #Novation #Summit and the #DB9 Deep Bass Nine. #MPC1000 midiclock is sent to the 808-clone and a eurorack midi-cv-clock interface. The clock of this interface is syncing the ER-88 eurorack triggersequencer which finally is triggering the Rocket. Gatelength and Velo changes on the Rocket control Glide & Accent of the DB9 ... surprising everything works so flawless. #OSCar and #ARP2600 are simply midi controlled by the MPC."

Synth Jams I Album by Marcus Padrini
Marcus Padrini, featured numerous times here on MATRIXSYNTH, has a new release out titled Synth Jams. Above are three videos featuring his music: 522 - [previously posted here], Synth Odyssey - [previously posted here], Influences [previously posted here]. Details on the release including links to your favorite platforms follow:
"Synth Jams I is a compilation of tracks recorded live using analog and digital synthesizers and drum machines. The songs were created from improvisations with different instruments and were captured practically the moment after their creation.
With influences from the songs and timbres of classic and new artists like Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Erik Norlander and Kebu, besides several works of electronic/instrumental music, the tracks of the album do not have a common style, but they share a main element: the sounds created with synthesizers.
In this process, the idea was to interact with the instruments, create and manipulate sounds in real time. It was also part of the plan to leave the computer and music production software out of this process. Therefore, anything that could not be played simultaneously live was performed by a MIDI sequencer (Roland MC808).
Gear used on Synth Jams I
►Analog Synths: Arp Odyssey, Moog Sub 37, Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard & TETRA, Behringer Deepmind 12.

TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Overview
YouTube via stereoping
"My TinyRhythm is finished. A little tweaking on it. It is a 8 channel Drumsynthesizer triggered by Midi. It can learn the midichannel it listenes to. Has some individual outputs and two triggeroutputs. The mixer-faders have an led which flashes when the channel is triggered. Each channel is based on a Atmel microcontroller and has as few as possible additional electronic parts. Just a proof of concept for personal learning on µControllers.
The simple "one-Transisor"-VCA concept" in some modules and the very simple mixer with accent-input is shamelessly copied from the dr110. For the Accent I added a 'time' parameter which makes the decay of the levelemphasizing much longer."
TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Top 4 Instruments
"Some tweaking focused on the first 4 Drumchannels: 1. Bassdrum based on a lookuptable-envelope and a trianglewave, both sent out by PulsWidthModulation with analog VCA behind. 2. full digital Sid-Style-Snaredrum - very simple, just a tiny13 and a dual opAmp. 3. Hihat is alos very digital - besides shofted noise it can also make some spectra generated by 3 digital oscillators. And 4. TomTom, which sounds more than another Bassdrum. Depending on triggerstrength it can make 3 different pitches."
TinyRhythm DIY Drumsynthesizer Bottom 4 Instruments
YouTube via stereoping
"Some tweaking focused on the other 4 of 8 Drumchannels: 5. Clap which can also make some Guirosounds, Its kind of burst generator triggering 2 analog Envelopes, sound source is digital noise or some multioscillator-spectra running through an analog VCA (quite a copy of the dr110-clap but with with digital brain). 6. is Cymbal which can also make some cowbell-sounds. The sound runs through a bandpass which is frequencymodulated by an LDR + an LED. The mode-dial can set sample/hold, LFO with different speeds, envelope up/down with differen speeds and fixed 5V. 7. is the simple but cute analog Maracas/Clave from Vermona ER-9 and last one can make 3 different sounds, based on triggerstrength: Clave (from CR5000) which sounds more like a nice 'bek' than a clave, another Clave (from TR808) with MUCH more parts and at last an "accidently-coming-out-as-another-Noise- Snaredrum"-Rim-Module from 808."
