An Experimental “Bent by Design” Synth Voice // 3 Patches with the Trepenator from ZLOB

video upload by DivKid

"Here we have the TREPANATOR from ZLOB, which is an experimental "bent by design" synth voice. It's inspired by Rob Hordijk's Benjolin and ZLOB remaking similar ideas with their own modules and circuits. There's two oscillators, a multimode filter, many feedback points, oscillating 3 band EQ and more in this highly interactive and wide ranging abstract voice and instrument.

Like the Benjolin that inspires it, the Trepanator excels and abstract, organic and interactive self influencing textures, sounds and rhythmic ever evolving loops. In this video there's mud burping, swamps in space caves, aquatic bubbles, harsh noise, unique techno percussion and FX and plenty more.

Info, manual and more // https://zlobmodular.com"

"The Trepanator is a 14hp analog “Bent by Design” experimental instrument featuring a Dual VCO, Difference Rectifier, 3-band EQ, Sample/Track and Hold, and SVF(state variable filter) all built into one nonlinear module. Its origins trace back to a love for Rob Hordijk’s Benjolin and patching a similar pseudo chaotic feedback-based instrument from scratch using all Zlob modules.

Although not based on Hordijk’s circuit or signal flow, it uses a similar architecture of dual voltage controlled oscillators, an “interference pattern generator,” a state variable filter, and internalized cross-patched feedback. Instead of a Rungler and comparator the Trepanator uses a sample/track and hold with slew, a difference/rectifier circuit(based on NLC), and a self-oscillating 3-band EQ. Utilizing this excessive feedback between the VCO’s, EQ, S/H, and SVF, creates a completely new instrument for discovering abstract electronic sounds. The Trepanator is a highly interactive, unpredictable, and an immediate instrument capable of a huge range of organic and sounds from: snarling, plucking, bubbling, screaming, gurgling, hissing, grunting, pinging, and quacking, to machine like rhythmic loops, circuit bent broken modem sounds, no-input mixer screeching, intermittent short wave radio fizzling, and full on Harsh Noise Wall all within the touch of a fader or a small knob turn without any external audio or any control voltage in."

Anyware Instruments Tinysizer SN 134

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

"Like a mini German tank. Super rare these days & so badass…

comes with 230 Volt to 12 Volt DC adapter, light, stand & mini patch cables and a aluminium case for safe transport to the next Gig .

A self-contained, analog modular synthesizer from Germany, made by Anyware Instruments:

Their aim was to be as small as possible, while also offering a lot of features and of course having a great sound. They were fully modular without any internal routings, so connections had to be made with the patch wires in order to make a sound. unfortunately discontinued and therefore VERY RARE !

HERES THE CHANCE TO GET ONE !

serial number: 134

Tinysizer:

2 X voltage controlled oscillator VCO - Oberheim SEM style
3 X suboscillators
1 X waveformprocessor/waveshaper
1 X voltage controlled filter, state variable VCF - Oberheim SEM style (with 4-input mixer)
3 X low frequency oscillator LFOs (with switchable frequency ranges)
4 X CV, 6x Gate, MIDI-CV interface
2 X mixer & inverter & overload - distortion
3 X multiples
1 X white noise & pink noise
1 X ringmodulator
1 X sample & hold s+h
4 X VCAs linear
1 X envelope follower & audio gate & microphone preamp
2 X ADSR envelope generator (fast & slow)
1 X control voltage CV - source
1 X DSP effect, reverb & delay (digital)
11 X patchable auxiliary in & outputs, bi - directional (to connect external gear)

The housing was made of metal with super sturdy, panel-mounted potentiometers. The synth came with a monitor stand to prop it up at an angle and a BNC gooseneck lamp, which could be attached to shine some light for patching. Patch leads came from Conrad and the patch sockets were the kind you'd find on floppy disk drive cables. Surprisingly, even after years of patching, I still haven't worn out any sockets."

Heritage Audio Introduces SYNTH BUDDY - World’s First Desktop 10 to 1 Reversible Passive Stereo Switch

video upload by Heritage Audio

Press release follows:

Heritage Audio announces availability of SYNTH BUDDY as world’s first desktop 10 to 1 reversible and fully passive stereo switch

MADRID, SPAIN: European pro audio manufacturer Heritage Audio is proud to announce availability of SYNTH BUDDY — billed as being the world’s first desktop 10 to 1 reversible and fully passive stereo switch as a cost-effective, essential studio solution for seamlessly connecting up to 10 stereo (or 20 mono) line level sources, such as synths, drum machines, or samplers, and toggling between them with the twist of a knob — as of January 15, 2025…

It is fair to say that anyone who has ever dreamed about an inexpensive solution to help have multiple synths, drum machines, samplers, and other line level instruments connected and available with the twist of a knob can wake up and smell the coffee, courtesy of Heritage Audio’s SYNTH BUDDY. Indeed, its top panel-positioned 10 x1 STEREO PASSIVE SELECTOR wording gives the game away as it is possible to seamlessly connect 10 stereo (or 20 mono) line level sources to its 10 stereo/20 mono TS jack inputs and toggle between them with the twist of a knob (outputting via one stereo/two mono TS jacks) — simple as that! Talk about a dream becoming reality. And an all-passive design ensures crystal-clear line level signals with no added colouration — straight from the user’s musical mind to the song with no power source needed.

Needless to say, when creativity hits, there is no time for plugging in cables and switching gear. After all, many have experienced the creativity-killing scenario of having a great musical idea seemingly arrive out of nowhere, only for it to disappear by the time everything is set up and ready to record; no such worries when working with SYNTH BUDDY, of course, since everything is connected and available at the twist of a knob.

It is even possible to use SYNTH BUDDY ‘backwards’ by turning it into a one-input/10-output selector, so users can, for example, easily run one guitar or bass into several amps or effects — applications are (almost) endless! Either way, SYNTH BUDDY is built like a tank with an elegant desktop design — measuring merely 190mm (W) x 105mm (D) x 80mm (H) while weighing in at only 988g — that lends itself to studio or stage usage... and all without breaking the bank!

SYNTH BUDDY is shipping and available via Heritage Audio’s growing global network of dealers (https://heritageaudio.com/where-to-buy-international/) with an SSP (Standalone Selling Price) of €199.00 EUR (including VAT) in the EU and a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) of $199.00 USD, US distribution being handled via RAD Distribution (https://raddist.com/en/brands/heritage-audio).

History on the H-949:
The Eventide H949 Harmonizer was a pitch-shifting and harmonizing device released in 1979-1984 that was a significant step forward in the development of these technologies:
-De-glitched pitch shifting: The H949 was the first pitch-changing device to analyze audio in real-time and avoid audible glitches.
-MicroPitch: This feature used a proprietary modulation technique to precisely control small pitch shifts.
-Multiple harmonies: The H949 could create up to five simultaneous harmonies using multiple pitch-shifting algorithms.
-Digital display: The H949 had a digital display that made it easier to adjust parameters than its predecessor, the H910.
-Randomized delay: The H949 included a randomized delay feature.
-Reversed delays: The H949 included a reversed delay feature.
-Flanging: The H949 included a flange feature.
-Real-time tuning: The H949's features made real-time tuning possible, which was long before Autotune.
-Double-tracking emulation: The H949's features made double-tracking emulation possible.

This Eventide H-949 was overhauled/restored by our shop here in Columbus, Ohio. Please visit us on our website, if you have a broken Harmonizer, or vintage synthesizer, drum machine, tape machine or other vintage outboard gear.

Supercritical Redshift 6 Now Available to Order

Press release follows:

Supercritical announces availability of Redshift 6 as self-styled Variable Character Synthesizer representing its inaugural desktop instrument

TAMPERE, FINLAND: having opened eyes and ears with show-stopping showcases at SUPERBOOTH24, May 16-18, FEZ-Berlin, Germany and Machina Bristronica, October 12-13, Bristol, UK, Supercritical is proud to announce availability of its inaugural desktop instrument in Redshift 6 — self styled as a 6 voice Variable Character Synthesizer that combines technology from the budget travels in time and space-offering Finnish synthesizer manufacturer’s previous Demon Core Oscillator and Neutron Flux Filter products, each of its six voices featuring a DCO (Digitally-Controlled Oscillator) that can create up to 16 analogue oscillators per voice with analogue waveforms generated under digital control — as of December 16…

Supercritical’s self-styled 6 voice Variable Character Synthesizer wording — which is subtly featured on the front panel of the desktop instrument itself by way of optical reinforcement — effectively encapsulates the Redshift 6 concept. Consequently, the analogue path of each of its DEMON CORE OSCILLATOR-based six voices is under strict digital control in terms of tuning, gain staging, filtering, and more. Moreover, Redshift 6 has a lush- and warm-sounding sweet spot that is inspired by classic analogue polysynths, but it also runs the full gamut from almost digitally sterile and clean to distorted behaviour and beyond.

Digging deeper, the filter core is an analogue 4-pole VARIABLE CHARACTER FILTER that is also digitally controlled to act like almost any classic vintage synthesizer filter and more besides. But in addition to the oscillators and filters, Redshift 6 has all the features expected of a modern synth — think modulators aplenty, flexible voice routing, (six-part) multitimbrality, MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), and (bypassable) stereo DSP (Digital Signal Processing) effects.

Elsewhere, Redshift 6’s six voices can be configured in a variety of ways — choose between true six-voice polyphony, classic vintage poly dual layer mode with 3+3 voices, six individual voices (each with their own patch and physical output), or any combination thereof. Those six voices can each also operate as a paraphonic voice with up to 16-note paraphony. And as if that is not enough to whet any serious synthesist’s appetite, multiple filters can be chained by routing audio from one voice to another.

Supercritical spent time — time that was well spent, clearly — realising Redshift 6’s physical form factor as a modern, compact — 378 mm (W) x 254 mm (D) x 63 mm (H) — desktop device with a 2.7-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) IPS (In-Plane Switching) colour screen surrounded by eight endless clickable potentiometers. Thanks to quick navigation via the shortcut button grid, menu diving is kept to a minimum, while a selection of familiar synth controls — DCO, VCF (Voltage-Controlled Filter), and AMP (amplifier), to name but the basics — are featured throughout the front panel. Put it this way: assigning modulations is equally easy and speedy with the modulation grid providing access to modulation source parameters, and all the assigned modulations can be edited via the MOD MATRIX. Meanwhile, a MACRO mode with six user-assignable buttons is included.

It is fair to say that Redshift 6’s slimline back panel packs in a lot of features for interacting with the outside world, including MAIN OUT (L and R) fed by the DSP effects, AUX OUT 1 (L and R), and AUX OUT 2 (L and R) — all on 6.3 mm jacks, alongside a modern MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) implementation with DIN IN/OUT and USB-B connection — not forgetting, of course, the headphone output.

One of the major design considerations of Redshift 6 is to facilitate a versatile and capable analogue platform with a flexible UI (User Interface) for accommodating new engines, easily updatable via software. Since its oscillators can currently go from traditional twin oscillator to supersaw behaviours while living in perfect harmony with the multimode filter, as well as incorporating various different character profiles — and all this in user-friendly ways that are easily controllable and modulatable, the relatively diminutive desktop Redshift 6 is already punching above its weight. Weighing in at 3.5 kg in actual fact, an exciting future surely lies ahead for Supercritical’s inaugural desktop instrument.

Priced at £1,099 GBP (including VAT)/€1,259.00 EUR (including VAT)/$1,349.00 USD, Redshift 6 is available through Supercritical’s growing global network of distributors, as listed here: https://supercriticalsynthesizers.com/where-to-buy/"

See the dealers on the right for availability.

Yamaha CS-60

via this listing

"Completely restored - as new.

This is not just another CS 60.

She is fully recapped, about 300 caps were replaced. Not only the elco's, but also most of the ceramic caps were replaced.

All logical IC's were replaced.

The power supply was recapped, calibrated, the works.

I swapped the original power cord with a hi-end power cable. The original one was of poor quality. The new cable is longer than the original, with larger diameter conducters, and better quality copper.

The power cord features a premium CEE7/7 Schuko plug which fits most EU outlets. In case your region of the world has a different power plug standard, it is easy to swap this plug with one that fits for your type of power outlet.

The original (low quality) audio connectors from 1976 were replaced with modern Neutrik gold-plated 1/4" jack connectors. Gold plated contacts protect against oxidation and corrosion.

I carefully added an LED on every voice board. These light up when the individual voices are in use. For tuning this is indispensable. You can see the LED's in action in the video I refer to at the end of this add - starting from 16m28s.

Just about all of the metal work was professionally sandblasted, treated against rust, chrome plated, polished, and/or powder coated.

The instrument was cleaned inside and out.

All faders and potmeters were cleaned and lubricated.

The S+H board was thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt - see photo. The instrument detunes far less over time thanks to this.

All of its original Yamaha type IG and YM chips are installed, as it came new from the factory.

Original cover + chrome music stand are both included.

Two of the fader/levers are missing on the photo's in my garden. Those have been remounted in the meantime. I took the photo's when the instrument was nearly finished and the light outside was perfect for a photoshoot.

I published a couple of video's on Youtube with this very synth - look for:
'Yamaha CS 60 demo - She is Alive' - that is indeed this CS 60." [posted here]

The Trepanator is a 14hp analog 'Bent by Design' experimental instrument featuring a Dual VCO, Difference Rectifier, 3-band EQ, Sample/Track and Hold, and SVF(state variable filter) all built into one nonlinear module. Its origins trace back to a love for Rob Hordijk’s Benjolin and patching a similar pseudo chaotic feedback-based instrument from scratch using all Zlob modules.

Instead of a Rungler and comparator the Trepanator uses a sample/track and hold with slew, a difference/rectifier circuit(based on NLC), and a self-oscillating 3-band EQ.
