RIP Mr. Tsutomu Katoh - Founder of KORG

A letter via Seiki Kato, President of KORG Inc.

"Dear Sirs and Madams,

I would like to inform you that our founder and chairman Mr. Tsutomu Katoh passed away early this morning (March 15, 2011) after a long fight with cancer.

Since he founded Korg Inc. in 1963, Mr. Katoh has led our company with great talent, vision and leadership. He was loved and respected by all the employees, all Korg family members and made a huge contribution to the lives of countless musicians around the world.

Plans for a memorial service will follow very soon.

I would appreciate your prayers for him and hope he can rest peacefully now.

Sincerely,

Seiki Kato
President
Korg Inc."

Tsutomu Katoh and the History of Korg

Another hero lost; one of the first to define the world of synthesis as we know it. The gifts he gave us will always be remembered and will inspire new synth enthusiasts and musicians for decades to come. Tsutomu Katoh-san, you will be missed. Thank you for everything you gave us.

Via Wikipedia: "Founded in 1962 in Japan by Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai, Korg was originally known as Keio Gijutsu Kenkyujo Ltd." and later "Keio Electronic Laboratories (京王技術研究所?) because its fledgling offices were located near the Keio train line in Tokyo and Keio can be formed by combining the first letters of Kato and Osanai. Before founding the company, Kato ran a nightclub. Osanai, a Tokyo University graduate and noted accordionist, regularly performed at Kato's club accompanied by a Wurlitzer Sideman rhythm machine. Unsatisfied with the rhythm machine, Osanai convinced Kato to finance his efforts to build a better one..." And indeed they did.

This sad news in via Amos of Moog Music and Michelle Moog-Koussa of the Bob Moog Foundation.

Update: some condolences and pics on the KORG Forum here.

Some video of the legacy of instruments he brought us with a rare interview in Part 1 (previously posted):

'The Vintage Synth - Volume 3: Korg' 1-11

YouTube via baward — November 24, 2009 —

"Rare, Japanese-language video from some time in the 1990's, taking the viewer on an odyssey through Korg's many instruments, from Korg's synthesizer museum at its Tokyo headquarters.

KORG Minilogue Demos by Adam Borseti

Published on Jan 17, 2017 Adam Borseti

Description for the first video:

"You know, folks.... I think I might like my Minilogue even more than my ARP Odyssey? I know, I know.... but it's just so inspiring.... every time I sit down at it, I just start creating in a way that I can't do with the Odyssey. The Odyssey is great when you know what you're going to play, and need a bassline, then a melody, and everything is planned.... but the Minilogue just let's it all flow.

Anyway, this is 13 minutes of raw improvising done in one take, editing a patch I made as I'm playing. This is actually how a lot of my best patches were created! I just start playing, and the sound tells me where to go.... it leads me into different territory ever knob twist. This sound for example is going to be in my upcoming (long awaited) patch set #5. It starts as a sound called "Triangular" which I dialed in, and was quickly inspired by. It's very... phasey and almost sounds like it's run through an MXR Phase 90.....

Anywho, I play and continue evolving the sound; making it more percussive, then towards the end, I end up with a totally different patch, which I then saved as "Mourn Horn".

EFFECTS USED:
-TC Electronics Half of Fame reverb
-Echo Plex pedal.

I had an MXR Chorus and MXR Phase 95 ready to go, but never turned them on.

Enjoy!"

Korg ARP Odyssey with External Audio Input from Casio SA-76

Published on Oct 3, 2016 Doug Plate

"Since I got my Odyssey, I've tried running various different keyboards into the Ext Audio Input to process through the VCF/VCA. Until now, everything I tried ended up sounding noisy or distorted (and not in a good way).

I recently picked up a Casio SA-76 at the thrift store and was surprised at how great the keyboard sounded through headphones, so gave it a try. It seems like a perfect match and comes through the Odyssey filter sounding really thick.

A Beatstep is controlling the Odyssey note sequence and there's lots of modulation on the filter - including Oscillator 1 in LF mode -affecting oscillator 2 and the SA-76 coming through it.

I won't apologize for the thrift store gear, but I will apologize for the length of the video: probably about 3 times longer than needed! I guess I was just enthralled by the sound of my own filter!

Recorded using the Audio Recorder in my Casio Privia Pro PX-5S because it's just so convenient."

Sequencer Control of Korg ARP Odyssey Filter (The Easy Way)

Published on Sep 12, 2016 Doug Plate

"Here is an updated, short video featuring the Korg ARP Odyssey and the Casio PX-5S showing and an easy way to control the Korg Arp Odyssey filter using a control voltage sequencer like the Beatstep. Just use a normal 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to connect sequencer CV Out to ARP Pedal input.

The Rhodes sound is supplied by the amazing Casio Privia PX-5S which also served as the audio recorder.

The question came up - why not just use the CV-In jack to control the filter from the sequencer? As this video demonstrates, in this configuration, the filter can be controlled by the sequencer while the oscillators notes are controlled by the keyboard producing a pseudo-polyphonic or multitimbral effect. Using CV-In, the oscillators would follow the sequencer also."

The TRITON music workstation revived | KORG Collection for Mac/Win

Published on Dec 26, 2019 Korg

"The TRITON music workstation revived.
A synthesizer collection completely reconstructed in software.

More about KORG Collection at: http://www.korg.com/korg_collection/

More than 15 years have passed since the release of the KORG Legacy Collection, a pioneer of software-based synthesizers offering full recreations of the analog circuits and digital systems of generations of KORG synthesizers. In 2017, we added the ARP ODYSSEY and re-released the collection under the name Korg Collection.

Now in 2019, the TRITON is the newest addition to the Korg Collection. Originally released in 1999, the TRITON achieved huge popularity across many genres and continues to be used 20 years later. The new Korg Collection TRITON comes with the complete EXB-PCM soundboard series, giving you access to a huge array of sounds so you can achieve TRITON's full potential.

KORG's many generations of synthesizers are beloved by musicians around the world. Surpassing the boundaries of digital and analog, the KORG Collection continues to revive the distinctive sounds of synthesizers that have left their mark on the history of modern music."

"The long-awaited addition to the KORG Collection series, the TRITON Music Workstation Synthesizer, is finally available. As the originator, KORG reproduced everything perfectly without any compromise. Now you can finally get the sounds that rocked the hit charts in software.

Sounds that come to represent an era inevitably fall victim to the change of style and fashion. What once felt new and refreshing becomes dated and boring. Still, those sounds always retain the emotional value that originally touched the hearts of musicians and listeners alike. Over time, new generations bring their own flavor and combine the old and new advance the cutting edge of art and music. In this modern age of software synthesizers the KORG Collection, with generations of iconic KORG sounds, will surely be the trigger for that synthesis."

Korg ARP Odyssey Module Overview & Demo

Published on Oct 3, 2016 Synthtopia

"At Knobcon 2016, we talked with Korg product specialist Nick Kwas about the new Korg ARP Odyssey Module.

When the KARP Odyssey keyboard was introduced, a lot of readers said that they had enough keyboards - what they just wanted a Odyssey synth module. Korg seems to have been listening, because that's exactly what they've introduced.

In the video, Kwas gives us an overview and demo of the Korg ARP Odyssey Module.

Published on Apr 27, 2015 SynthgodXXX

"KORG ARP ODYSSEY '1970'S SCI-FI ATMOSPHERES & EFX'
100% NO TALKING! JUST PURE TRIP-OUT SYNTH FUN!!!

This is the second KORG ARP ODYSSEY video, we feature
the ARP ODYSSEY controlled via MIDI by a ROLAND FANTOM-S.
I ran the ARP ODYSSEY output thru my KORG KRONOS Audio INPUT 1
and thru it's TAPE ECHO insert effect. Quite nice.
The ODYSSEY is incredible to use & is so versatile.
Getting the right PITCH with the ARP's sliders can sometimes
be a bit of a task. BUT.....
It takes a bit of trying but when you get it tight it becomes the true
ANALOG MONSTER the ARP is talked up to be!!
I just love it. Perfect for the price, a real keeper!

P.S.-PLAYING THE ARP FROM ANOTHER SYNTHESIZER OR
KEYBOARD WITH FULL SIZE KEYS Via MIDI IS A REAL DREAM!"

Arp Odyssey by Korg INHALT Line Level NAMM Recording

Published on Jan 30, 2015 INHALTVIDEO

"At NAMM 2015 we had the wonderful opportunity to play the new Arp Odyssey by Korg. Though smaller than the original it is just as much playable and the sound instantly reminded us of the pure analog Arp punch, grit, and weirdness. Nothing says minimal synth like the Arp Odyssey. Wether in the hands of Billy Currie, John Foxx, or D.A.F., the Odyssey has been a part of some of the most cutting edge and culturally important music.

While, admittedly, it was very difficult to play the synth with lot's of people bumping into us and various onlookers gazing over our shoulders, we did manage to record some raw sounds of the new Arp Odyssey. You can immediately tell that this is a genuine analog synthesizer and that it has THAT Arp sound we know and love. We hope this demo gives you just a little taste of what the Odyssey can do. Once we take delivery of our own, we will do a much more detailed recording especially utilizing analog sequencers (which the Odyssey was begging for). A massive thanks to Rich at Korg USA. We're looking forward to a White Face ;-)

The occasional clicking that you hear is the switching of the three different filter types. On the new Odyssey all three filters are available and a switch allows you to choose the different low pass types. Two are 24db and one is 12db. This was recorded direct to a Sony PCM M10 at 96k/24 bit and edited in Pro Tools HD."

The powerful beats are coming from NI Massive except for the Hi-hats and noise bursts which are also Atari STE. As usual external reverb and delay are added. Hope you enjoy it!

Vintage ARP Odyssey Mk I 2800 Whiteface Restored with CV/Gate/Trig Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a beautiful example of the classic whiteface ARP Odyssey model 2800, ready for studio or stage. ARP designed the Odyssey to be a simplified, hard-wired ARP 2600, with the great sounds of that coveted classic in a smaller, more portable package. The Odyssey was also ARP's answer to Moog's Minimoog when it debuted in 1972. This example is itself likely from 1972—it has a low serial number and the "MANUFACTURED BY TONUS, INC." sticker on the back. It's in 100% operating condition and is extremely clean inside and out. My tech, who specializes in Odysseys, gave it a ground-up restoration. All sliders, switches, knobs, keys and jacks work flawlessly. This Odyssey sounds truly amazing and is a pleasure to play in its restored state. I play it frequently and can assure you that every function works as it should. The tuning is stable instantly with hardly any warm-up time, which is a great characteristic of these oscillators and rare for an old analog synth. Forget the crap Korg Odyssey reissues—this is the only way to experience this classic synth and appreciate how truly great it is.

Here's exactly what my tech did to bring this amazing synth to its current state:

* Everything was meticulously cleaned by hand during the restoration.

* Sliders were dismantled, cleaned, polished, lubed, tested and only the best internals were used resulting in an accurate and smooth operation.

* All original Arp slider caps.

* Each switch was cleaned and slightly lubed.

* Capacitors and other audio path components were replaced then the synth was calibrated.

* The power supply was rebuilt and calibrated supplying accurate voltage over a long duration.

* The keys were cleaned, buss bars and spring contacts polished, key heights leveled, and new key bushings installed so the action is like new and all keys trigger perfectly.

At some point in the past someone modded the Odyssey with a CV/Gate/Trig in/out (see picture). My tech checked it and said it was a good job and works 100%."

Korg Arp Odyssey FS Mk1 Demo

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Korg Arp Odyssey FS Mk1 Demo: A synth I loved, treated well and am going to miss.

Published on May 16, 2020 Surface Noises

"This is my Korg Arp FSQ Mk1, which I'm selling on Reverb. The video is very lofi: I'm clutching a camera and microphone in one hand whilst trying to twiddle knobs.

But I hope it shows that I look after the synths I own. I've been running a record-selling gig on Discogs under the same name for years with 100% feedback."

via this auction

"The Odyssey is in close to perfect condition, with no obvious problems I have spotted. There may be very slight signs of use, but I haven't spotted them. It looks really beautiful. This version is definitely the best-looking Odyssey you can get. It's Mk1 and looks like the Whiteface models which were the first to come to market (and had the best sounding filter, in my opinion)

The sliders all feel good and I don't have any problems to report with any other aspect of the synth. It came with a sequencer - a version of the widely available Korg SQ1, which I sold because I thought it was rubbish. The Odyssey comes with original box and power supply, as well as the aforementioned dust cover."

Korg ARP Odyssey Explorer 1

Published on Sep 28, 2015 Bill Vincent

"This video is a sound exploration of the Korg ARP Odyssey. The Odyssey is running through an X32 mixer with some digital reverb and a bit of chorus to widen the sound across the stereo field. I spent much of this video experimenting with getting as many tones from one note as possible - i.e. using the filter along with LFO modulation and resonance to create "chords" from the two oscillators, using filter/resonance harmonics to add the third and sometimes fourth (over)tones from the note. This video is long and probably boring, but for those interested in what types of sounds are possible out of the Korg Odyssey, this may hold some value."

GForce Software Vintage Synth Trump Cards

I actually posted about these way back in 2005. Mark spotted them on the GForce site and sent the link in. I thought I'd put a new post up and capture the list of synths and description for the archives. BTW, also check out this post for some Roland info cards.

"Vintage Synth Trumps

This is Vintage Synth Trumps, a deadly serious card game for vintage synth enthusiasts featuring 52 classic instruments. Test your knowledge and settle those arguments once and for all with the synth-spotter's equivalent of arm-wrestling.

Can you use your skill and judgment to win the whole pack from your opponents and become the undisputed champion of vintage synth wisdom?

Playing is easy. Simply divide the cards between the number of players before taking it in turns to read aloud a statistic from your card.

For example, "Korg PS3300 - Collectability = 5 out of 5". Everyone then compares the card on the top of their hand and the highest scoring instrument in that category wins that round. The person who gains all the cards wins.

So next time your kids pester you for a card game, extract revenge with Vintage Synth Trumps (not available from any good department stores near you).

The perfect kitsch gift for trade shows, long flights, forum banter, pub quizzes, train journeys and all round anorak type showing-off.

Buy your pack of Vintage Synth Trumps for only £7.95 (price includes first class postage, other methods available)

KORG Reveals Upcoming PS-3300 FS

Update: I'm hearing the PS-3300 will be available in late 2024, built-to-order, for an etimated price of $13,000.

KORG is bringing out a full-size reissue of the PS-3300. Details follow.

The PS-3300 FS is a full-scale reissue of the original Korg PS-3300, a legendary and ultra-rare synthesizer designed by legendary Korg engineer Fumio Mieda and produced by Korg in very limited numbers from 1977 to 1981.

The PS-3300 FS reissue marks a new milestone in synth history, and the latest achievement by the same Korg engineering team that brought back iconic machines such as the MS-20, ARP ODYSSEY, miniKORG 700 FS and ARP 2600.

“Bringing back to life these legendary machines is not only a process of reproducing circuits and sounds, but also of learning and embracing the essence of the philosophy and development of synthesizers.

Through this project I was able to relive the history of Korg and a critical moment in the evolution of our synthesizers. This was an extremely valuable experience that provided an opportunity for Korg's philosophy and technology to be carried on to future generations.”

- Yoshihito Yamada, Chief Engineer of Korg Analog Synthesizers

Key features
49 keys / 49 voice analog polyphony (the original model had 48 keys / voices)

3 Layers: The PS-3300 consists of three synthesizer units (PSU-3301) and a mixer & utility section (PSU-3302)

Three independent oscillators, plus multiple filters, envelopes and amplifiers for every note on its keyboard, for a total of 147 synth voices of raw analog power

Microtuning knob x12 on each PSU-3301 unit

New panel memory function (16 programs per bank and 16 banks = 256 slots)

Modernised for contemporary music use with the inclusion of USB / MIDI jacks, and a dedicated librarian app for easy preset management

Semi-modular

3-Band Resonator: Three frequency bands can be emphasised, a feature unique to the PS-3300 (original was a Cadmium sulfide circuit, but it was replaced with modern components for safety and to comply with regulations)

Keyboard unit (PS-3010) included
