Ataraxic Iteritas Alia bit table oscillator from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Ataraxic Iteritas is an oscillator inspired by retro game sounds and glitchy textures. It’s a wonderful choice for alien sound design and impactful sounds that take up the whole sonic spectrum. It has a huge low end, responds wonderfully to modulation, and it’s great for basslines and chiptune-inspired leads. Its design was inspired by the first-ever Noise Engineering module, Ataraxic Translatron.

Ataraxic is available now: https://bit.ly/3HmzZG8

Cursus Iteritas Alia wavetable oscillator from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Cursus Iteritas Alia is our take on a spectral/wavetable oscillator. Cursus Iteritas has long been regarded as the gentlest, most melodic Iteritas oscillator, but its Fold and Edge parameters can bring it the territory of aggressive and in-your-face sounds, too.

Cursus is available now: https://bit.ly/3HmzZG8

0:00 Overview
1:09 Panel and Controls
4:03 Patch: Metallic Lullaby
4:31 Patch: Sweet & Sour
4:56 Patch: 'Til Death
5:23 Patch: Foiled Again
5:48 Patch: Resonant March
6:16 Alia platform

Cursus Iteritas is a freerunning oscillator. Pair it with a VCA and a slow envelope for the perfect lead line, and try patching its pitch and modulation inputs with something like a ribbon controller or gesture module for expressive control.

The Daub/Four/Walsh switch selects the synthesis algorithm used to generate sounds. Center, Structure, Width, and Tilt control the harmonic structure of the oscillator, with a variety of interdependencies between controls. Edge and Fold add distortion and grit to the sound if things are a bit too gentle. We recommend starting out with Edge and Fold at minimum and the rest of the controls centered, then experimenting with the various controls.

Alia is a 10HP oscillator platform much like the Versio and Legio platforms. With Alia, we are pleased to bring back Cursus and Ataraxic Iteritas, as well as Manis and Basimilus. We've also released new voices on Alia: Debel and Incus.

Alia's interface is similar to the Iteritas modules but now includes an encoder for easier tuning, a dedicated Sub Out jack, a Hold button for freezing CV modulation, and a self-calibrating pitch input that expects -2V to +5V. Cursus has been designed to sound as close to the old versions as possible.

Like with our other platforms, if you own any Alia module, you can swap to any other Alia firmware for free by going to the Noise Engineering Customer Portal and connecting with the included USB cable."

Introducing Incus Iteritas Alia and the return of Cursus and Ataraxic to the Alia platform

video upload by Noise Engineering

Update:

Incus Iteritas Alia FM-based wave-mangling additive voice from Noise Engineering

video upload by Noise Engineering

"Incus Iteritas Alia is available now: https://bit.ly/4b0koJW

Incus Iteritas Alia smashes big and bold sounds into your patches. Incus started as a percussion voice, and was smelted into something even wilder: create kicks for any genre, snares, and metallic hits, or go melodic and create FM plucks, analog-style basslines, and so much more. Incus uses a combination of waveshaping, saturation, wavefolding, FM, and additive synthesis, plus a slew of internal modulation, all behind easy-to-use parameters perfect for jamming.

Both FM and additive synthesis can be quite complex, but Incus uses a simple set of controls to keep things straightforward."

Press release follows:

"Los Angeles, CA — Modular synthesizer company Noise Engineering, known for their innovative Eurorack modules, has announced three additions to their Alia oscillator platform: Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia.

In 2023, Noise Engineering released the 10HP Alia platform, marking the return of their Iteritas oscillators. Alia launched with the famed Basimilus Iteritas firmware, along with Manis Iteritas and the new Debel Iteritas, but the team promised firmwares in the near future.

Now, Noise Engineering has delivered, doubling the number of firmwares available for Alia. Cursus Iteritas Alia and Ataraxic Iteritas Alia are revamped versions of the originals, promising to sound nearly identical to the originals with improved encoder tuning, a suboscillator output, and a performable Hold button. Incus Iteritas Alia is an all-new voice based around wavemorphing additive FM, designed for percussive and melodic sound design.

Since Alia is an oscillator platform, owners of existing Alias can try out all three of the new firmwares on their modules. Firmware is 100% free and swappable at any time from the Noise Engineering Customer Portal. With six firmwares now available for the platform, the Alia is an excellent choice for those who want an incredibly diverse yet compact sound source in their system. Swappable overlays for all firmwares are also available from the Noise Engineering webshop and retailers around the world.

The new Incus Iteritas Alia is an exciting addition to the lineup, utilizing Noise Engineering’s favorite synthesis tricks and techniques to create a new voice boasting a massive range of timbres. Sounds are created with a combination of additive, wavemorphing, and FM synthesis, with three different algorithms all controlled by an internal dynamics envelope. Users familiar with the Basimilus will find that Incus has a similar workflow, and while it can synthesize the best parts of a drum kit, it’s also well-suited to bass and melodic duties.

As usual for their platforms, all of the new firmwares are available as paneled modules, so customers can choose the panel they prefer. Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia are available now at https://noiseengineering.us and at retailers globally.

Availability and pricing:
Ataraxic Iteritas Alia, Cursus Iteritas Alia, and Incus Iteritas Alia: In stock in black and silver.
Shipping from Noise Engineering and retailers starting January 18th, 2024; MSRP US$385" [check with the dealers on the right for availability]

Paia Custom Analog Synthesizer 1972

via this auction

"Here we have a one of a kind custom PAiA built into an old suitcase built By Steve Alcorn the vice president of engineering at Linn, the synth is an expanded 2700. It inludes original 1/4" patch cables, suitcase has a key and there is another key to power the synth on. Comes with every pamphlet for each module used. Steve also signed the outside of the suitcase.

Steve pre-wired it up like an Arp Odyssey It is still completely custom-patchable as well. Modules include:

Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (3)

Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (2)

Voltage-Controlled Bandpass Filter

Voltage Controlled Low Pass Filter

Envelope Generator

Control Oscillator / Noise Choice

Power Supply

Glide Retro Fit

Envelope Follower / Trigger

Sine Converter / Pulse Width Modulator

Balanced Modulator

Envelope Generator

In addition, all the original manuals are included for the above modules, plus a few other of PAIA's products.

The unit is designed to be easily ported to gigs, where in a few seconds the keyboard can be lifted out of the case cover and the case cover detached, giving you a Moog-like setup. It was a fun performance instrument. I remember generating the crashing waves for Riders on the Storm during a gig in 1973!

This unit has not been powered since the late 70s. Prudence would suggest a thorough inspection of all the electrolytic capacitors, for starters. But this would be a dream project for an electronics tinkerer, and gives you a very large collection of very rare PAIA circuits as your starting place."

Ambient jam with the Sequential Prophet Rev2, Eurorack, Sloër, and Soma Cosmos

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I went to the store to try out the Sequential Prophet Rev2 for fun, but they didn't have it set up on the floor.

"You should just take it home," the rep said. "Bring it back within 30 days if you don't want it."

So here we are, with the Prophet Rev2 at home. I love having so many voices that so easily can be panned into a binaural sound. The keybed and layout are fantastic and I just like playing it. The sound is great except when it isn't; something about the full-open filter or resonance is displeasing in a mix, though I often don't mind it on its own. Here, I made a binaural patch, with the same synth sound hard panned to left and right sides, but slight variation in the DCOs and "slop" (terrible word) leading to a very rich stereo feeling. One of those rare beautiful things you can do with only some polysynths (and software, of course).

In short, the Prophet Rev2 is a wonderful synth to explore with something of a frumpy sound, for better and for worse.

I was noodling on some chords and wanted accompaniment, so I started with the Cosmos (for some asymmetrical looping), and then took out my melodic eurorack skiff. It's been a while since I had it on the table, so it was nice just to hear these sounds again. Eurorack just leads me to places and sounds I might not otherwise find.

Ultimately, this jam came together in a day, and I'm always a little worried about those ones, because you might not like them as much the next day. So far, though, I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks for listening.

Walrus Sloër - reverb for Rev2
Soma Cosmos - looping for Rev2
Eurorack:

5 Jams with Pura Ruina full-wave rectifier/octave fuzz from Noise Engineering

2:50 Jam 5

More info on Pura Ruina: https://bit.ly/3MyFKnb

Jam 1: In this patch, we're sending one CV to the "All CV" input on the Pura Ruina then four unique CVs to each of the full-wave rectification inputs. This gives some distorted rhythmic character to the Cursus Iteritas.

Jam 2: The Loquelic Iteritas is running through the Pura Ruina. The Clep Diaz's BOC and output signals add rhythmic distortion when added to the PR's CV inputs. Winterbloom's Castor & Pollux gives us those drony pulse waves.

Jam 3: We put together this all-NE drum box to hear what the Pura Ruina can do with the BIA. Then, we top it off with some stereo granular processing with the Melotus Versio.

Jam 4: Let's hear how each different full-wave rectifier sounds. Simple waveforms can be manipulated into completely new and exciting tones. We start with the dry signal, then move to single, double, and triple full-wave rectification!

Jam 5: Here we're sending the 4 gates from the Zularic Repetitor into the Pura Ruina's 4 CV inputs to give that BIA some extra distorted punch. Then, we create a tight stereo effect with the Melotus Versio by lowering the grain count and reversing the grain direction."

What is The Vanilla Synthesizer? It's Ready, That's What

via the STG Soundlabs/muSonics Electronic Newsletter:

Is it The Vanilla Synthesizer or the muSonics TVS?

I started working on this project a year and a half ago.

Originally my thought process was to make a new American format synthesiser that could be sold as modules, kits, and bare boards. I was concerned about the future of the format, and I felt a new line of basic modules and infrastructure at a variety of price points was important. I still do.

STG Soundlabs was a failure because I made things that ultimately the eurorack market simply did not want. Yes, I sold some, and will continue to maintain the line as best as I can, but it's very hard to find photos of eurorack installations with STG Soundlabs modules in them, but rare to find a nice big man-sized synthesiser without my modules in it.

Another thing I wanted to do was teach myself how to do my own engineering. It didn't start that way, but it became that way. I'd been a hardware product developer since 2005 but never actually laid out a circuit board. That is no longer true, and I've done things beyond this project that I haven't even talked about.

"More about Polydactyl here: https://bit.ly/3ti53TT

Here are 5 things you can do with Polydactyl from Noise Engineering. We used presets and modified parameters to enhance a dull mix, beef up that drum room mic, and add dynamics processing to a clean guitar, Bass VI, and a 12-string.

Smoosh, limit, expand, drive, saturate, and create with Noise Engineering’s Polydactyl dynamics plugins! Polydactyl is designed for anything from subtle mixing tasks to complete sonic destruction.

We also made another dynamics plugin, Librae, made for mixing, mastering, sound design, and stereo-field experimentation. Check these out and other plugins on our website, and 'build your own bundle' for discounts.

Inspired by over-the-top and aggressive techniques but designed for versatility, Polydactyl and Librae are intended for clean mastering, sound design, and coloration."
