benjolin percussive rolls -- response to a question

Published on Aug 9, 2013 Epoch Modular·14 videos

"Regarding the percussive rolls, these are very easy to get. Basically, that's the Rungler in loop mode, with the rate on the oscillators (particularly B) going at a faster rate. The rungler output can be used as a clock also, and this comes in hand when the rates on the oscillators are up higher, because while both the pulse outs and the rungler run at -5/+5, peak to peak, because of the length and of the rungler Step patterns the positive edge comes at a much slow rate than that of the pulse outputs. In this way the rungler can be used to obtain percussive roll type effects from the benjolin outputs as well as with other modules.

With regard to clocking the rolls, it depends on what you mean, you can control where they drop initially, by using a precision clocked module such as the 4MS RCD or SCD modules, but you can't always control exactly where the rolling effect will end, this is because depending on the settings of the module, the loop function may also excite the rungler after the loop is complete. This being said, as long as you are using a precision cv to clock the hold pattern you can maintain a substantive amount of control over the behavior of the rungler as well as the other outputs. In addition, if you run precision triggers, gates or envelopes into the oscillator CVs and the filter cutoff this creates even more control over the chaotic functions of the benjolin. This is demonstrated in my video "in response to a question" where the trigger and gate out puts of the 4MS modules are being used as CVs for both oscillators and the filter, and later in the video to hold the rungler pattern as well. Keep in mind also that the chaotic behavior of the benjolin can be greatly limited (even eliminated) by using the Rungler attenuator knobs on the right of the panel. When you turn these all the way CCW, this breaks the interfence pattern that animates the aleatoric patterns that the core circuitry produces."

TB MIDI Stuff Andromeda Editor V1 Now Available

via Boele: "As of today the first version of the iPad editor for the Andromeda A6 synthesizer is available. The editor captures all sound editing parameters on the Andromeda, spread out over 102 pages with a combined mix of NRPN and system exclusive messages. Its focus has been on sound design, so it is not a librarian (yet). That might or might not change in the future.

The editor is free, however the template it needs to run in "TB MIDI Stuff", a MIDI controller app for the iPad which costs 4,99 $ / 4,49 €. The app is totally worth the money since it's developer, Fabien Manchec, helped a lot in the background to make this Andromeda editor possible.
Besides running this Andromeda Editor, you can use the app also to build your own MIDI control templates or use already made templates by others.
I would appreciate it a lot if you give the app a nice rating/review in iTunes as a thank you to him!

The download link will give you a zipped file which after unpacking leaves you with two files: the actual editor and a Read Me text file. I suggest you first read the Read Me text file! :-)

I would appreciate it a lot when users mail me with bug reports, ideas and suggestions: scd@synthmusic.info.

I will use the forum on electro-music.com for discussions about the editor and the Andromeda.
http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-90.html [direct link to editor thread here]
Update: direct link to the editor download here.

For me personally, sound design on the Andromeda changed completely: to have a better oversight of all the functions and a WAY better interface (specially concerning the knob value resolution) makes the Andromeda like a complete new synthesizer for me.
Yes, the thing has a few bugs, yes, even with the editor it still is a complex synth, but oh it can be *so* rewarding. And in a way it is a 16 voice polyphonic analog modular. With patch memory! That's pretty unique.

Enjoy!

Sequencer & Arpeggiator Screens for Upcoming Andromeda A6 Editor

Follow-up to this post. Below is an update on the sequencer & arpeggiator sections via scd on electro-music.com.  The editor is nearing completion and is expected to be available next week.  This editor is extensive.  It's incredible how much it will open up and bring a fresh new approach to editing the A6.

"The step sequencer is captured in two pages as you can see. The arpeggiator in one page in the editor.

The first stepsequencer page is a good example to explain the building blocks of the editor:

- sliders: those are simple to understand. Double tapping on them brings up a jogwheel for fine tuning by the way, but the sliders already are a huge improvement over the Andromeda knobs
- switches (the ones with the red LED): for on/off functions.
- rectangles with rounded edges: those are always popup menus. I used them for parameters with more than 2 choices. On the step sequencer pages those are the note selection, number of steps,
- small boxes with a "m" inside: these will always bring you to a modulation page. There are 47 modulation pages. Each modulation slot that has the list of 79 modulation sources has its own page. With big knobs. On those modulation pages you can always go back to the page where you pressed the "m".
- little dots (like the one in the upper left corner above the clock rate slider) will be visible throughout the editor, indicating that that parameter is a modulation destination in one of the 47 mod pages.
You wll be amazed how many parameters are a modulation destination on the Andromeda!

The step sequencer has a problem that is not solvable as far as I know at this moment. The problem is in the "switch" between the first 8 steps and the last 8 steps (plus accompanying parameters): there is no way to tell the Andromeda "go to the first" or "go to the second" LCD screen (plus accompanying parameters).
The one you are looking at on the hardware is the one that should be on your iPad screen: you have to make them the same on the Andromeda. The button to select the first or last page is the button that is used to switch through the 16 steps on the Andromeda. The only way to tell the Andromeda to be on the fist page is to switch the synth off and on...
Well, something to think about when working with it. In the editor you can switch between the LCD screen for steps 1-8 and 9-16 by pressing the blue triangle in step sequencer page 1 on the iPad (it is simply forwarding 8 steps in the background). But you have to check on the Andro if it is the same there.

The same problem happens with the selection of the four step parameters: there is no way to tell the andro to start on one of them (note, velo, gate, step). You can only walk through them...

Furthermore there are parameters that do not work correctly or do not work at all. I will post about that later.

But I can tell from own experience that the step sequencer becomes a lot easier and thus more fun to handle with the iPad!

Another (known) bug is the fact that you can not use the hold pedal for holding the step sequence: sooner or later that gives hanging notes unfortunately. Be aware of that.

More later.

Boele"

Alesis Andromeda A6 Editor for iPad

Boele Gerkes aka SCD is working on an iPad editor for the Alesis Andromeda. Some details via this thread on electro-music.com:

"Would anyone be interested in that? I am working on one for myself for quite some time now, and it really changed the great synth into a GREAT synth
If there are enough interested people I might consider a (not free, but cheap) public release to earn a little back for the many many hours I have put into it.

It is an editor that uses mixed NRPNs and Sysex messages (that was quite a trip by the way, to "back engineer" how things are done on the Andro) and probably will capture each and every parameter that has to do with sound editing (which are a lot as you all know) and some global stuff.

My main problem with the A6 interface is the tiny LCD in combination with the *way* to sensitive knobs... I *hate* that really on the Andro. But I *love* the character of this synth and possibilities. That's why I started this for my own pleasure.

This editor has for instance have sliders and knobs with which you can change values much more more comfortably than on the A6 itself.
Some parameters (like the level knobs in the 47 modulation pages) wil even have a knob and two sliders for the same parameter, so you can choose with which resolution you want to change the values. It makes sound design SO much easier!
For instance, try to add a little pitch modulation to an oscillator with an LFO... you'll get the idea.

Touching a knob on the iPad will call up the appropriate LCD screen on the Andro.

I am almost done with all synth engine parameters, except for the digital FXs. Those will all get an iPad page of there own.

It is builded up out of pages with a navigation bar at the bottom to reach the various sections.
This is the list of iPad screens that are dedicated to a part:

Modulations (with 47 sub pages for the 47 mod slots on the Andromeda)
Oscillator 1 (with all parameters on one page, including links to the mod pages)
Oscillator 2 (like Osc1)
Pre-Mixer
Filter
Post Mixer
Envelope 1 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
Envelope 2 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
Envelope 3 (with 1 sub page for Looping and Dynamics parameters)
LFO1
LFO2
LFO3
S+H
Effects (with 29 sub pages for each digital effect)
Arpeggiator
Sequencer
Clock
Global (to be determined what will be in there: at least the CRoutes stuff, and the Tracking Generator, plus the Portamento, patch select and some more)

The number of pages will run into the 100+ But navigation will be easy and quick.

What this editor is NOT:
- It's *not* a Librarian and it will not become one.

What this editor is/has:
– a *very* handy tool to design sounds on the Andro! Trust me. It has become a completely new synth to me, since working with it.
- an editor that captures *every* sound editing parameter of the Andro that has a NRPN/sysex control attached (unless a bug prevents one. There are a few on the Andro, but not many).
- a "fix" for the 50% PW bug (a button sets it for you to 52%)
- controls that do right to the values you want to fine tune
- bi-directional (but some restrictions, certainly when using WIFI, due to an Apple bug)

And it is not ready yet, so it will take me some more months probably. I will post some screen shots in the near future."

modDemix-René, Brains,PressurePoints-Slow Acid

modDemix-René, Brains,PressurePoints-Slow Acid from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"Quick patch test with the modDemix and MakeNoise René sequencer running out to several modules for a slow animated control voltage jam. I started with QCV to 1V/ oct into the Cwejman VM-1 (Acid Slow Bassline). Then sent the X-Gate into the Cwejman CTG-VC envelope and I use Y-Gate for Accent/volume. I used the Doepfer 160,161,4ms RCD, SCD for clock divisions for gates into the rene for half time pattern playback. ModDemix was used in VCA mode with Rene going back and triggering the input for interesting gated time triggering of signals. The distant quantized melody is one voice of the VCO2-RM through the intellijel uScale then through Tiptops Z-5000 with a touch of delay. MakeNoise Brains and Pressure Points running in sequence mode to the Synthesis Technology E350, VCO2-RM, WMD Gamma Wave for extra clustering of timbres. The Cwejman BLD is the kick drum, and Noisering for high hats and snare patterns generated by the intellijel uStep.

Waldorf Microwave XT Tracks by SCD

via Boele Gerkes of SCD on the Waldorf List:

"It is more than ten years ago that I read an article in SOS magazine about the Waldorf XT. The story basically said: "if you're looking for a nice piano sample, this is not it" :-) That sold me. In the summer of 1999, after several years playing romplers I bought another synthesizer and it was the XT. Together with a Jomox Xbase and Emu Emulator 4k. It was the start of some fruitfull years in terms of composing and recording... :-)

The start of this song, plus all other sound except drums and mellotron is XT. The XT is a very capable synth, both in wavetable sounds, as well for doing basses and pads.

Ambient Blofeld

via Boele of SCD on the Waldorf list:
http://www.synthmusic.info/mpdries/ModMemMan.mp3
"Here's a test sound with my Blofeld going through a modified Electro Harmonix Memoryman de Luxe analog delay.

The 4 MN3008 (2048 stage BBD) chips are exchanged with MN3005s 4096 stage BBD). This doubles the delaytime, gives a little bit more analog (= nice) distortion when feedback is opened up. Also the opamps are exchanged with better ones.

It's just a simple pad patch going through the MM with maximum delaytime, feedback on 2 o'clock and a little pitch modulation from the MM added.

This brings me back to old Pink Floyd records."

Inside a Waldorf Pulse and Moog Voyager - Transitor Array Filters

There was some discussion on the Waldorf list regarding this video on the Waldorf MicroWave 1 compared to the MicroWave 2. The discussion digressed to the analog filter types used in Waldorf Synths. Till "Qwave" Kopper sent in the following bit of information that I though was interesting and deserving of a post: "in the Pulse there is a CA3046 transistor array in the filter. (last picture, and my fingers shown too)(remember Boele taking these pictures at my home, Georg?)

The Moog Source also uses this transistor array. And if you don't know the sound of the Pulse, but the sound of the Moog Source, you will know it has big balls soundwise.

The Moog Voyager also uses a filter array like this, but the type CA3086 (again last picture).

So even if you know the specs inside, it is still the sound thatmatters."

A fun side note: you might recognize the names Boele (SCD), George (swissdoc) and Till (Qwave) from this post, this post and others (just do a search for them on the top left of this site). They do not work for Waldorf but have definitely been experts in all things Waldorf for as long as I can remember. They all beta test Waldorf gear and they offer great non-official support on the Waldorf list on their own time. All great guys in my book.

Waldorf Blofeld S&H Distortion

via Boele of SCD:

This is one single Blofeld patch, without external processing (well only AIFF-mp3 conversion)

My two hands, a Blofeld keyboard and it's modwheel was all it took.

I find the warm distortion Blofeld can produce really unbelievable. I have a few distortion, fuzz and overdrive pedals here (analog and tube driven), but Blofeld just doesn't need them :-)

The rhythmic effect in the track is caused by a Sample and Hold LFO modulating the filter cutoffs and filter panning, where LFO sync is on (all LFOs start at the same phase).

What a machine..."
