Hydrasynth Firmware 2.0 – Introduction & Performance by Dominic Au & Tutorials

Hydrasynth Firmware 2.0 – Performance by Dominic Au
video upload by ASM Ashun Sound Machines

"In this video, product manager Dominic Au demonstrates various new Hydrasynth 2.0 features.

ASM adds features and functions to perennially popular Hydrasynth range with major (2.0) firmware update available for free

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA/HONG KONG, CHINA: creativity-sparking sensational products provider Ashun Sound Machines (ASM) is proud to add features and functions to its perennially popular Hydrasynth range — comprising the original Hydrasynth keyboard and Hydrasynth desktop, announced to widespread critical acclaim in September 2019, followed by the flagship Hydrasynth Deluxe and portable Hydrasynth Explorer models announced in September 2021 — with a major (2.0) firmware update available for free as of March 15…

As an appealing appetiser, ASM’s major (2.0) firmware update adds three more memory banks to the Hydrasynth keyboard, desktop, and Explorer models, matching the Deluxe’s existing eight banks for a total of 1,024 patches. Put it this way: all are cutting-edge digital wave morphing synthesizers that positively invite their respective users to get involved in designing sounds, so more memory makes sense. Speaking of sound design, each Hydrasynth oscillator — OSC 1, OSC 2, and OSC 3 — now includes a new BitRedux (bit reduction) parameter that allows users to choose between OFF, 16, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 bits.

But — given that the 2.0 firmware update readily ranks as a major one — there is more, including more modulation options, thanks to a new modulation source called VoiceMod (voice modulator) that allows users to offset values for each voice that can then be applied in the Mod Matrix to vary chosen parameters per voice. Digging deeper, all five envelopes — ENV 1 through to ENV 5 — and LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) — LFO 1 through to LFO 5 — have new Quantize options, so adventurous users can quantize their outputs to achieve unique stepping effects. Excitingly, now it is possible to choose to advance through the steps with each new note on with the LFOs in Step mode, meaning users can play through the steps one by one with each new note press.

For flexibility in the studio or at home, Hydrasynth’s version 2.0 firmware update also allows users to bypass each of the (Pre-FX, Post-FX, Delay, and/or Reverb) effects globally in the system page — to record a dry signal without having to edit each patch, in other words. Thanks to the 2.0 firmware update, Hydrasynth users can choose how the sustain pedal operates. The three options available are: Sustain — traditional sustain (as it has always worked), Sostenuto — press and hold a single note while playing notes above it, and Mod Only — disables the sustain function, allowing users to then route it in the Mod Matrix.

Meanwhile, mention must briefly be made of other added features and functions, to include: Arp range expanded to six octaves; new Arp Step Offset parameter; Bank selection from browser window; ability to randomize all steps in LFO Step mode; new display Dim, On/Off options; Glissando mode added to Glide options; fine control for more subtle options offered by Vibrato; and Local On/Off status recalled (with in-screen reminder). As ASM CEO Glen Darcey duly concludes: “We hope you like the new features in 2.0. I would ask that you download the manual; there are some good tips and tricks on each of the new features and functions in there.”

Update: pics and details via KORG:

"Synthesis powerhouse with distinctive wavetable timbres, Kaoss Physics, and Motion Sequencing 2.0.

In 1985, Korg's DW-8000 combined digital wavetables with rich analog filters to give users sounds which were impossible to create with analog oscillators. It's still a cult favorite today.

modwave builds on the DW legacy and transforms it into a modern monster synth, featuring incredibly deep wavetable oscillators, gorgeous filters, wildly flexible modulation, unmatched polyphony, comprehensive pattern sequencing, and immediately satisfying hands-on control to deliver unique, powerful, and easily customizable sounds and phrases.

modwave also introduces two unique new tools for creating dynamic motion: Kaoss Physics and Motion Sequencing 2.0. Kaoss Physics combines an x/y Kaoss pad with modulatable game physics to create a responsive, interactive controller that is—besides being powerful— a lot of fun to explore. Motion Sequencing 2.0 brings the organic, continuously evolving patterns of the wavestate's Wave Sequencing 2.0 into the world of motion sequencing, including multiple lanes and real-time recording to help you create complex and evolving phrases that other step sequeners cannot.

Like Wave Sequencing 2.0 (wavestate) and altered FM (opsix), modwave’s evolved wavetable synthesis delivers its own brand of completely unique sounds and a knob-per-function layout that makes customizing those sounds fast and easy. To start, there are hundreds of preset sounds empowered by this new architecture, organized by front-panel category buttons, and all instantly customizable via the four Modulation Knobs. modwave's distinctive wavetable timbres start with aggressive basses & leads, and lush ambient pads which will add a new dimension to your tracks. But that is just the start. Those who want to dig deeper will find an endless source of discovery; you'll be finding new things in this synth for a long, long time because of the unique synth architecture. Once you have started finding new sounds - aave as many as you like; there's room for thousands more."

MATRIXSYNTH Turns 7!!!

Today marks the seven year anniversary of MATRIXSYNTH! The original matrixsynth.com actually launched way back in October of 1997 as MATRIX SYNTH. I never took it down, BTW. Click here to see it in all it's old school glory. If you thought there was too much green on this site, just check that baby out. BTW, check out the manufacturers list under MFG. I stopped updating it about the time I started this site in 2005. You can see what modular manufactures, and of course others were around back then. It's an interesting look back in time... Kind of why I started this version of the site actually. I'll get to that further below.

Last year I skipped the site stats and kept the anniversary post relatively short. I used to post stats for the site and a general blurb on what makes the site tick, but it began to feel redundant so I skipped it last year. Well, I kind of missed it, and I know some of you enjoy the stats thing, so I'm bringing it back. And CatSynth did it for their six year anniversary post yesterday, so there you have it. Actually I was planning on including stats before I read that post, but I do like CatSynth. The site has grown quite a bit and we have a ton of new readers who don't really know the background of MATRIXSYNTH so I thought I would share some of that as well. I've also had a few people ask me to do personal interviews. I always turn them down as I do my best to keep myself out of the site so I don't ruin it for anyone. It's kind of like the whole Wizard of Oz thing. Enjoy the Oz in MATRIXYSNTH, and don't let the wizard ruin it for you is my only advice. That said, I decided this year to reveal a little more about my synth history than I normally do. Don't worry though after this post that's it. This site is about the gear only. I see it as my job to bring it to you unbiased and get the heck out of the way. Seriously though, I really do my best to present what is out there free of bias for you to consume and form your own opinion. I do this for three reasons; one, out of respect for the person that created the content, two, so I don't accidentally prevent you from getting your own experience out of the post, and three, because of how much goes up on a daily basis - it saves you and me time.

But, in the anniversary and New Years posts I do tend to make up for my lack of words big time, so bear with me or just skip to what you like.

Before I begin with the stats I do want to give a big thanks to everyone that visits, supports and contributes to the site. THANK YOU!!! It really is a tremendous amount of work, so all the kind words and support make a huge difference. Every single post you see here is hand posted. There is no automation. The site takes roughly four to eight hours on average a day (closer to eight) and sometimes up to ten hours. This is every single day, including weekends. Out of the seven years running the site I have only missed one day (by accident - more on that below), and the only day I take off is Christmas day when I put up only one post, which surprisingly can be torture in not posting. The posts you see here are a combination of stuff I find out there on my own and stuff people send in, which is quite a bit. The site started as a hobby and has fortunately grown into a small business with the help of sponsors. Note sponsors are always on the right. In the history of the site there has never been a paid post on the main site, and if there ever is, I will be sure to call it out in the post. That said, THANK YOU SPONSORS! It's one thing if the work only consumed my time, but it in turn consumes my family's time, so every little bit helps. THANK YOU! You make the site possible!

First the stats!

We still haven't reached world domination. Everything you see with a shade of green is a visit to the site. Check out Africa! The few in white mean no visit came in. The top map is for the seven year history of the site and the bottom is for this last year. Click on each for the full size shots. As you can see they are pretty much the same. Still no hits from North Korea.

On the other hand we had 122 visits from Syria within the last year along with traffic from other war torn countries. Incredible! Please keep safe out there! You are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

The top 10 visits by country:

1. United States 982,943
2. United Kingdom 258,070
3. Germany 183,138
4. France 168,649
5. Canada 142,553
6. Italy 109,605
7. Japan 84,202
8. Sweden 76,948
9. Australia 73,881
10. Netherlands 72,680

And the overall stats:

Source: Google Analytics for the year (July 20, 2011 - July 20, 2012):

6,364,538 pageviews
2,838,084 visits
972,065 unique visitors.

Source: Site Meter for the life of the site:

32,734,610 pageviews (18,557 average per day)
15,658,114 visits (7,822 average per day)

Google Analytics (started April 5, 2006):
30,795,628 pageviews
14,313,210 visits
4,258,879 unique visitors.

Note unique visitors can be a bit misleading as I believe it's based on the individual browser and cookies vs. IP Address or individual, so for people checking in on multiple devices and even multiple browsers on the same machine, each one counts as a unique visitor. The numbers are likely lower.

Unfortunately I do not see a top posts for the last year in Blogger so we will have to go with the top posts for all time:

Waldorf Quantum OS 2.0

Published on Mar 27, 2020 WaldorfMusicChannel

"We are proud to announce the availability of the highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware for our flagship Quantum Synthesizer — a major, feature-packed update centred around a new Kernel oscillator type alongside an array of other additions and improvements in keeping with the innovative instrument’s apt appellation. The update is free and available from here: https://waldorfmusic.com/en/quantum"

Update: and the press release:

"A long phase of beta testing has finally come to an end. Many of you have eagerly awaited this release, and here it is. Waldorf proudly presents the new 2.0 firmware for the Waldorf Quantum synthesizer, featuring the new Kernel oscillator type and an array of further additions and improvements.

From now on, in addition to the four previously available synthesis algorithms Wavetable, Waveform, Particle and Resonator, the Kernel mode complements the set. This opens up new grounds of serious sonic exploration and increases the already staggering number of possible sounds by another level.

Kernel mode is engaged by pressing the Wavetable and Waveform button of one oscillator at the same time. In Kernel Mode, up to six so-called Kernel Operators can be combined within a single oscillator. Each of those Operators is an oscillator of its own, supporting basic waveforms, wavetables and noise. All of them can be combined and interlinked freely. Choose between classic Phase FM, true FM and wavetable position as modulations at audio rate between the kernels.

There is an innovative Template Mode featuring 14 factory templates to create classic FM sounds through to forward-looking inharmonic textures and abstract tones. Those templates feature five individual meaningful sound parameters each, and a further five macro parameters are available in the Quantum Synthesizer’s main Modulation Matrix. Furthermore, you can use the Full Edit mode in order to delve deeper into the sonic structure of the Kernel mode and edit the kernels freely as you like.

It is perfectly possible to view the Quantum Synthesizer’s Kernel synthesis abilities as an oscillator construction kit, allowing for traditional approaches like a six-operator FM synth, as well as providing an experimental space for future-facing synthesis techniques.

That's by far not all, though. The highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware for Waldorf Music’s flagship Quantum Synthesizer also adds an array of other additions and improvements in keeping with the innovative instrument’s apt appellation. Improvements have been made in the Wavetable, Particle and Resonator oscillator models and the Modulation Matrix. The Sequencer now has a Parameter-only mode. USB storage devices are now supported. Expanded AudioFile Editor functions are now available and allow for editing samples within Quantum. Samples will now automatically be imported and exported together with the patches. Plus, many further improvements and fixes have been made.

When Waldorf Music launched its flagship Quantum Synthesizer to widespread critical acclaim, it sonically signalled an exciting new chapter in its longstanding tradition of designing groundbreaking high-end synthesizers. Introducing its highly-anticipated version 2.0 firmware with so many additions and improvements indicates that this exciting-sounding synthesizer story is far from finished. For now, there are already more than enough fanciful features available to keep both tweakers and deep divers seriously sonically satisfied for some time to come!

Owners of Quantum can download the new update for free from their myWaldorf account. Log in and go to My Hardware. On the right column, click on "Quantum Update" to get access to your new firmware. Right next to it, you'll find a sound set with over 250 new Quantum patches which is available for download for free.

Installation of the OS 2.0 is done using an SD card. Unzip your download and copy the "quantum.update.bin" file into the main directory of your SD card. Insert the card upside down into Quantum. Go to Global>System on your Quantum and press Update. Reboot may take a few minutes longer than with the previous firmware updates. Do not switch off Quantum while the update is running! After you have the 2.0 update installed, future updates can be loaded from a USB drive.

We wish you lots of fun with your new firmware. May the music help everyone to get through these tough times. Our support team is still availabe for you. You can contact us and find answers to frequent questions in our support portal: https://support.waldorfmusic.com

Stay safe these days.

Squarp Instruments introduces pyraOS 3.0 firmware update for Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer

You can find some videos of the update in previous posts here. The official press release follows.

"PARIS, FRANCE: following five months of beta-testing, avant-garde musical machines developer Squarp Instruments is proud to announce availability of pyraOS 3.0 — a free, major update of the radical realtime processing system firmware for its innovative Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer, an advanced 64-track desktop design with MIDI, MIDI USB, CV/Gate, and (Sync48- and Sync24-configurable) DIN Sync connectivity, creatively adding all the most requested features from its supportive user base alongside innovative ideas from its design team to total over 30 additions — as of September 3…

Polyrhythm is defined as a rhythm which makes use of two or more rhythms simultaneously, so Squarp Instruments’ Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer certainly takes some beating as an advanced 64-track desktop design with MIDI, MIDI USB, CV/Gate, and (Sync48- and Sync24-configurable) DIN Sync connectivity (‘re-released’ last year as a more robust MKII version, thanks to the machined aluminium housing and a sturdy screen protecting its graphical display); different and unusual time signatures can creatively be set to work on each of those tracks to shape shifted-beat sequences, sowing the seeds for freshly-flavoured musical productions. Perfectly designed from the ground up as a modern, easy-to-use, and versatile hardware sequencer, the Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer deftly delivers a radical workflow and almost unlimited possibilities... powerful sequencing, looping, rhythm generation, real-time effect processing, MIDI control, and input+output interfacing are far from beyond the realms of possibility. Put it this way: Pyramid Polyrhythmic Sequencer is perfectly positioned to take centre stage in any musical setup — spanning studio to stage.

Low Frequency Expander 2.0 by Yorick Tech

"Announcing the Low Frequency Expander 2.0, a major firmware upgrade, free to all users, available from December 2020.

The LFE is a standalone, hardware modulation expander that supports the OB-6 and Prophet 6, Korg Prologue, Nord Wave 2 and a generic ‘CC-Synth’: any midi device that can be controlled by midi CC messages. It uses midi to provide 3 complex global LFOs and a 6-stage envelope – which can also be configured as an 2 to 16-step modulation sequencer – to add considerably more complexity, movement and playability to these amazing synthesizers. It also acts as a 4-slot modulation matrix, allowing you to route velocity, key, aftertouch, mod wheel or CV in (optional) to about 50 destinations in the synth (80 with the Nord!)

Simply selecting a new patch on the synth makes the LFE automatically recall the same- numbered LFE patch from its memory, so the two have their patches locked together. You can select the next (or previous) patch in the same category, stepping through all of the Bass patches for example.

New in 2.0
Support for the Rev 4 Prophets 5 and 10, and Moog Voyager. CC-Synth and any two synths are included free; others are extra cost.

Internal midi clock for controlling the LFE and external devices.

The synth’s patch names can now be read and displayed by the LFE, so if you edit patches using for example Sound Tower, the LFE can get these directly form the synth even though the synth itself can’t display them.

Release Aftertouch (RAT) allows you to fix an aftertouch value just before releasing the last note and hold that value until the next note is played. This can be used in a similar way to release velocity, which is sadly only generated by a few keyboards. RAT lets you, for example, increase Release times or increase FX depth just by giving the keys a quick press before releasing them.
The LFE now supports Poly Chaining using any keyboard as master and any synth as slave. The LFE handles all of the note sharing so the attached keyboards simply remain in their normal mode.

You can limit the number of voices played, add a second Sub Voice like a sub oscillator but at any pitch, and can add a velocity offset to the sub voice, so that for example, a second voice a 5th higher comes in only when played with more velocity."

Synesthesia Mandala Drum

"LAUREL CANYON, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2007) – It’s a drum, it’s a harp, it’s a guitar, it’s a marimba… it’s all of those things, and much, much more – at once.
Musical ingenuity once again emerges from the hills of Laurel Canyon, as Synesthesia today announced Mandala™ 2.0 – a new version of its wildly popular, patented high-def drum and synthesizer, co-developed with professional drummer Danny Carey of the progressive rock band Tool.
Now a computer peripheral – its USB cable plugs into PC or Mac – the Mandala 2.0 is the only electronic drum that truly emulates an acoustic drum. It offers drummers and musical explorers the only drum pad that knows exactly where it’s hit and how hard, across seven assignable zones – with an immediate trigger delivering the fastest-traveling sound possible.
A new kind of synthesizer, the Mandala 2.0 packages a musical range so wide it simultaneously offers players the top of the line, most accurate model of a physical drum (via 3,000 professionally created, proprietary samples of the Black Beauty Snare Drum) – along with a library of sounds derived from more than 100 other instruments. In all, the Mandala 2.0 features four gigabytes of sound samples. It’s a synthesizer with drumsticks, with a drum pad so sensitive it responds even to a fingertip touch.
"The Mandala helps people find their rhythm – whether it's the beat of a drum, or of a sound they haven't yet created," said Vince De Franco, Synesthesia founder and CEO, and inventor of the Mandala. "Use it as a compositional tool, or to create any sonic reality your heart desires. It's got percussive sounds down cold – and that includes percussion instruments like the piano, the vibraphone and the triangle. Its range gives people a rich, satisfying way to experiment. It literally will be a different product for everyone who buys it. It's the smartest thing you'll ever hit with a stick."
Whereas most electronic drums have one zone in the middle that detects the strike, Mandala’s creators invented and patented a technology that enables the drum pad to detect the exact location and strength of every point of contact across the entire pad. With 128 concentric rings from the center to the edge – each offering its own sound variation – the Mandala offers unprecedented musical breadth. This high-def drum and synthesizer is bringing to percussive music-making the same kind of high resolution experience that HDTV has brought to viewers.
The Mandala 2.0 retails for $349, and is available November 1 online at http://mandaladrum.com and www.musiciansfriend.com. Each Mandala is hand-crafted and thoroughly tested before it is shipped. Expect two-week delivery.
Other key features:
• The accompanying software lets players synthesize a host of new sounds and expand their drum kits and sample libraries at will. The software automatically accommodates up to five separate drum pads. It’s also designed to inspire and facilitate composition – along with the included instruments, players can add their own samples to the library, and use the effects to mold and create their own sounds.

• The Mandala 2.0 works seamlessly with most major music software, including Apple GarageBand, Ableton Live, and Native Instruments Battery and Reaktor.

• Mandala’s easy-to-use software comes with more than 100 presets for out-of-the-box functionality. Players also can create their own configurations as they explore and discover its astonishing audio range.

• One pad can accommodate from one to seven different zones of sound – each of which can be configured as a separate instrument, with an array of specialized settings. Players can have a snare, a bass and a cymbal (or a harp, marimba or organ, or any other instrument) – all in the same drum head, all at the same time. One Mandala can act as one drum, as an entire drum kit, or as an eclectic combo.

Drummer Meets Physicist
Inventor and physicist Vince De Franco developed the Mandala with professional drummer Danny Carey from the progressive rock band Tool. Carey uses seven Mandalas every night on stage because, he said, it’s “the only way I can trigger and control all the sounds I want to play.
“I told Vince I wanted an electronic drum that would trigger immediately, and that would let me load a gigabyte of sound samples,” said Carey. “What he created is the most advanced electronic drum I’ve ever seen. And now this new version blows the last one away.”
Carey used the Mandalas to trigger many of the sounds on the band’s latest album, 10,000 Days. Every percussive sound in the track, Intension, is produced as a result of hitting a Mandala. Other professionals using the Mandala include Pat Mastelotto of King Crimson; Will Calhoun of Living Colour; Lol Tolhurst, co-founder of The Cure; and Matt Chamberlain – who has played with Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Tori Amos, and many others. Bastl Instruments Introduces New Products at Superbooth16

via Bastl Instruments

"We are proud to present 3 fresh additions to our modular lineup: D ynamo, T romsø and Hendrikson. Thanks to these modules we were also able to create new complete modular systems focused on signal processing: B ob a nd Bobek a nd an upgrade to our flagship modular system R umburack 2.0. We will also present more new modules: Popcorn, Dupdup, Clutch and Ciao! previewed at NAMM in January. Come to meet us in the Foyer of Funkhaus booth number BF500!

Dynamo is dynamics analyser and fake t hruzero modulator. It combines an Envelope Follower and a comparator which, when combined with a fullwave rectifier output and Compressor CV curve generator, allows you to make a compressor from any VCA (think of tube or vactrol). The other trick of the Dynamo is a voltage controlled switch section which combines with the full wave rectifier and comparator to allow you to create deep “fake thruzero modulations” with anything you like!

Tromsø is made of 3 modules: VCO, Comparator and Sample & Hold. Internal normalisation allows you to instantly use it as voltage controllable analog downsampler (or sample rate reducer if you like). This module is inspired by a machine called Distortotron by Psybe made in 1994 which is arguably the first analog downsampler and bit distortion of its kind. This machine was commissioned by Mental Overdrive for his album Plugged from 1995 which will be rereleased this year at Rett i Fletta.

Hendrikson is a guitar/ instrument amplifier and an interface for external effects processors such as stomp boxes. The most unique feature is the mix output which is a CV controllable crossfader between the signal that goes to the Output and signal that comes from the Input. This means that when used with external effects processor it gives CV control of one of the most important parameters the Dry / Wet Mix.

Rumburack 2.0 is a compact yet powerful modular system with analog punch and digital charm. Its advanced sequencing abilities make it a self contained performance instrument that is ready to go on tour with you!

Bob and Bobek are analog processing modular systems designed with live performance in mind. Instrument amplifier input and line / guitar level output make it so universal that it can work in any setup. Both modular cases have a bottom insert for standard microphone stand which makes them look great on the stage! In comparison Bob has far more modulation sources, foot interfaces and more external connections via additional Hendrikson.

Pricing and availability: all shipping early June 2016, prices excluding VAT

Dynamo 5HP, dynamics & more, 109 eur
Tromsø 5HP, analog downsampler & more, 109 eur
Hendrikson 5HP, stomp box / instrument interface, 109 eur
Rumburack 2.0 compact and powerful modular system, 2149 eur

"Dynamo is combination of 3 utility modules: envelope follower, comparator and voltage controlled switch. It combines Envelope Follower and comparator to extract gate from the envelope. On top of that there is full-wave rectifier output |EF IN| and Compressor CV curve generator.

When the Compressor CV is plugged into CV input of a VCA with offset and attenuator knobs you get an Compressor! Threshold knob on Dynamo sets the compressor threshold, Offset on the VCA sets the gain and the attenuator on the CV input sets the ratio of compression (which can also go negative). This allows you to create compressor type of effect from anything: VCA, tube module, VCF or anything that comes to your rack!

The other trick of the Dynamo is the voltage controlled switch section in combination with the full-wave rectifier and comparator. All pre-normalised and for what reason ? Make “fake thru-zero modulation” with anything you like! Define what happens when the negative modulation is happening and adjust the zero crossing point with CV. The whole world of very deep modulations is waiting for you now…

… and it is totally bonkers!"

GuinGuin Instruments MME DIY Eurorack Minimoog Clone

The following are some initial details via GuinGuin's Julien Delgoulet on the Modwiggler forum:

PCB, rare parts and Panel kits available here.

Build guide with BOM on github.

My name is Julien Delgoulet, I'm a synth DIY passionate from a little town in France called Brive-La-gaillarde. I usually spend my time lurking on muff, matrixsynth , electro-music.com when I'm not repairing, moding or designing synth related circuits.

For quite a long time, I dream to own a Minimoog but never had the cash to buy one ...

About a year ago, a friend of mine get one and, after playing a few times with it, I decided to give it a go. (By that time, I did not know that this project will fill all my nights and week-ends ... fortunatly I have a
wonderfull wife  )

The initial target was to make an exact replica but finally ends up with what I call "Mini-modules" (Think ARP like sub-modules for Filter, VCO etc) for any format : eurorack / Moog 5U, you name it. Also, they could fit behind a "real minimoog sized panel".

All the design are exact replica of the Minimoog rev 2.0 (the one based on CA3046 expo converters) and are all using thru-whole components (excepted a few components that only exist in SMD packages)

So, let me introduce you the idea of "Mini-modules" and the control boards that actually "activate" them.

There will be 6 "Mini-modules":

- VCO
- VCA/Preamp
- VCF
- VCF Env
- VCA Env
- Noise/mod-mix/glide

There will be also 7 "Controller boards" :
- One for each mini-module (so you get an eurorack version of each for example).
- Another, my favorite one, which is 60HP eurorack version where 3VCOs, VCF etc plug into. ( I choose 60 HP so that if you have a 84HP case, you still have some room for a real LFO, a midi/CV interface etc)

At the moment, everything works great, I'm finalizing the "Mini-modules" and the 60 HP Controller Board to hold them.

To give you an idea of the progress made so far , here are some pictures of old prototypes and "Mini-modules" eagle boards. More to come in a few days...

As you might except, this will be a DIY project and I will propose PCBs, BOMs and schematics so that "everyone" can build his own Mini ;-)

I'm so thrilled to expose this project to you guys ,particularly on muff (where I've been more than a lurker and not very helpfull to the communtiy) and
hope you are excited as I am about this project now it is not "secret" anymore

BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0

Published on Jun 23, 2017 Arturia

BeatStep Pros on Amazon, Reverb, eBay. Also see the site sponsors on the right.

Playlist:
1. BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0 - Episode 1 - The Polyrhythm mode
The new polyrhythm feature for the drum sequencer of the BeatStep Pro now allows you to define different sequence lengths for each of its 16 tracks. A 9-step hit-hat fill aside a 7-step tom lick, a 11-step snare march laying over a straightforward four-on-the-flour kick, all mixing together? It’s up to you! Whether you want to create an elegant feeling of perpetual motion or the most radical drum anarchy, this is a whole horizon of creativity that opens in front of you.

2. BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0 - Episode 2 - The new roller/ arpeggio
BeatStep Pro has already become the go-to sequencer of the greatest live performers and with the new Roller / Arpeggio feature it is going to take your gigs to an even higher level. Holding the BeatStep Pro touch strip and pushing a pad will repeat the related sound at different resolutions. This feature is now available for each of the BeatStep Pro sequencers. On a drum sound, it will be extremely helpful to create rich fills in a flash. On a synthesizer or any other melodic instrument, it will be a key to create very instinctively fast bass lines or rhythmic leads. It goes even further as pushing several pads while holding the touch strip will create an arpeggio based on the related sounds. And of course, you can use it along with the real-time recording to create and rewrite sequence with a never seen effectiveness.

3. BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0 - Episode 3 - Pattern Chaining
Spontaneity is profitable when it comes to experimenting and extracting composition ideas from scratch. However, when you are on stage, being able to put everything in working order is often preferable. With this idea in mind we deeply reworked the BeatStep Pro code so that you can save and recall in a flash specific configurations of your patterns and even pattern chains, what we call scenes.

Each of your 16 projects can contains up to 16 scenes each allowing to chain up to 16 patterns for each of the 3 sequencers. Now if you are more into music than mathematics, this can be summed up as tremendous advantages for live performances.

4. BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0 - Episode 4 - Randomness & Step Edition
You like what a certain level of unpredictability can bring to your music but you prefer to keep the control over your creations? Then, you will probably love the octave randomization mode. If it is switched on, when using the Randomness feature, the pitches of your active steps will only be shifted up or down one or several octaves. This will give you the best of both unpredictability and musicality.

5. BeatStep Pro firmware update 2.0 - Episode 5 - The Drum Tie-Note function & Volca compatibility
Leaving pieces of gear out in the cold is a difficult experience for any musician. Thus, we brought several additions to BeatStep Pro in order to foster the integration of the Volca modules.
It begins with a new clock format to ensure a perfect synchronization of the BeatStep Pro with the Volca built in sequencers.
From now on, you will also be able to customize the MIDI channel for each track of the Drum sequencer independently from the others. This will allow you to make the most of the Volca Sample but also to build complex setups where the BeatStep Pro Drum sequencer will control several instruments at a time.

NAMM: Akai MPC5000 OS 2.0

"Meet the new OS. Not the same as the old OS.

The MPC5000 is the most talked-about MPC in the music industry today. It’s the latest evolution of the unquestioned standard in sample-based music production. The MPC5000 builds on the MPC foundation, combining powerful sequencing, sampling and processing with the feel of the exclusive MPC pads and Q-Link assignable controls. It adds never-before-seen MPC advancements such as a virtual-analog synthesizer, a streaming hard disc recorder, incomparably high-resolution sequencing, and over 100 other new capabilities.

MPC5000 OS 2.0 is a free, new operating system upgrade that includes more than 25 additional improvements, many of which are developed to accommodate the specific requests of the people who use the MPC5000 every day. MPC5000 OS 2.0 will be available Spring 2009 as a download at akaipro.com/MPC5000.

Home on the range.
The most requested, exciting, and powerful new feature we’ve added to OS 2.0 is the ability to create and load Keygroup Programs. And with it, in MPC fashion, comes a massive array of cool Keygroup helper tools.

Now with the MPC5000, just like with our legendary S-series samplers and legacy MPCs, you can create chromatic key-mapped sample programs that take a sample and spread it across a range of notes of your choosing, automatically adjusting the pitch of the sample chromatically. You can then play these notes with the pads or an external MIDI keyboard or controller.

What does this really mean for you and your production? For starters, no more time-consuming program creation or relying on an external keyboard for your sounds. SHIFT+PAD will select a Keygroup, you can set range via MIDI if on range parameter, plus you can select a Keygroup via MIDI to select the next Keygroup with the note played. Another new feature is the ability to assign the root note of a sample assigned to each individual layer on a single pad. You can also pan each layer individually in Keygroup and drum programs. Imagine the sonic possibilities!

More good news for all old school producers - you can now import S1000, S3000, S5000/S6000, Z4/Z8, and MPC4000 format sample libraries, including Keygroups, from Akai Pro and third parties. Now you can migrate fully to the MPC5000 platform.

Hustle and flow.

Music production is all about creativity, workflow, the tools at your disposal and making it all come together as seamlessly as possible. So designing a music production device is rooted in finding the best possible collaboration of its elements. OS 2.0 makes production with the MPC5000 friendlier with such time-saving improvements as the new MultiEdit function which enables you to edit and apply parameters such as tuning, filters, pitch, pan—every parameter of the filter screen—to a group of pads, all at once. This streamlines the production process by empowering you to perform group editing.

Get around.

We just upped GRID EDIT’s abilities. You can now see and edit controller automation and event data in the new Controller Grid Edit Window. We also gave the sample editor some love as well.

We’ve added a ZOOM function to each individual slice in Chopshop mode for even finer editing of your samples and beats. This takes the guesswork out of cutting a beat and ensures you get what you want every time.

We’ve added a slew of navigation shortcuts you’ll appreciate. For instance, you can now assign the sample you are working on in TRIM mode to a pad by holding SHIFT and striking the pad of choice.

We’ve improved the Effects, Synth and Mixer pages by adding a new Take Over Mode to the knobs and sliders. This is a great help when going between many different pages where you are using the Q-Links to change parameter values. Parameter values will not jump to the position of the knob or fader until the original values zero crossing is passed. This allows for seamless mix and edit moves in realtime.

It pays to play.

Improving upon the all ready impressive mixing capabilities of the MPC5000, you can now toggle between the hard disk Audio Track Mixer and the Sequencer Track Mixer with one button without having to interrupt playback of the song. This speeds up track creation in a big way.

You can now quantize Track and Pad Mutes in real time to the internal clock or that of an external device. This means that if you use an MPC5000 to trigger clips and tracks live, your mute punches will be perfectly in time.

Marrying performance and production, the MPC5000 now supports full automation of the mixer and effects.

If you have an MPC5000, you know it comes loaded right out of the box. Now that even more capability is coming to should check out the new OS for your MPC5000. Or upgrade to the flagship MPC and get all of these new features along with it.

MPC5000 OS 2.0 will be a free download in Spring 2009 from the Documents and Downloads tab on the MPC5000 page."

The PPG Wave 2

Update: I put this up earlier yesterday but decided to move this up so no one misses it. Note this is NOT the popular PPG Wave 2.2 or 2.3, but the super rare Wave 2 that preceded the 2.2 and 2.3. This is a very rare and special synth. This is our chance to see and hear it.

via Boele Gerkes (Something Completely Different):
"After Wolfgang Palm had released the WaveComputer 360s series PPG came out with the PPG 2.0. An 8 voice, 1 oscillator digital wavetable synthesizer with analog filters (CEM 3320) and analog VCAs (CEM 3330 dual VCA). It's the forerunner of the better known PPG 2.2 and 2.3, but to my opinion these are quite different sounding PPGs, probably mostly because of the different filters used (SSM 2044) and different VCAs (CEM3360).

I know and own(ed) all the Waldorf wavetable synths too and have done lots of music with those (WAVE, Microwave 1, Microwave XT, the Q) but those are incomparable with the PPG series.

The PPG 2.0 sounds very intimate and to me it's the perfect mixture of digital and analog components in a synthesizer. I fell in deep love with it. And more famous band and people did too: Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Robert Schröder, Gary Numan and others.

Yes, it's digital, yes it aliasing as hell, but ohhhhh..... everything gets polished again by those lovely filters...

All examples are PPG 2.0 only (plus reverb and delay). It's quite clear where some leads from Tangerine Dreams albums of the eighties come from...

Also the demo-tune is PPG 2.0 only. Not really a good song, but it shows a few sounds the synth is capable of. Since there is no midi on the PPG (yet...), everything is played by hand, so excuses for some timing glitches.

The PPG 2.0 on which all this is done, is on loan from a friend of mine. But I just bought one myself. Should arrive next week."

AJLAB's Introduces OB-Xtreme 2 - Virtual Oberheim OB-X/OB-Xa Soft Synth for PC & Mac

via AJLAB aka Aly James Lab

What happens when you take 8 mono synths and use them together? Huge analog sound! This sound is the result of slight imperfections between each voice card and, because of some electronic components (mis)behavior, parts from the orginal circuit (notably the OB-X) caused all sort of distortion happening at different stages from filter to VCA and also at the output stage, OB-Xtreme place a special attention to the later with an emphasis on "the Growl".

There is a lot to say about what V2 is, I can already say what it is not : a simple V1 cross-platform update. V2 is a full remake, while V1 was a simpler take on an OB voice card architecture, V2 is more closely related to original OB designs and specs (including features from OB-X, OB-Xa etc) it is not a direct V1 replacement, nevertheless it got a Legacy mode for Envelope Generators and Filter control so V1 sounds can be reproduced or made (more on that later).

V2 have higher specs in every part of the circuit, it comes as an upgrade gift to all V1 owners, V1 owners will get it for free or use a "give what you want" option.

Pre-Release main features
This pre release is the full functioning synth minus the v2 factory presets (only v1 bank + some extra are included until September) and LFO2 not active. This will be ready for final release in september 2022 which will come as a free 2.0.1 update for all owners of v2. Bare with me, trying to keep this summer release date as one man operation was THE WAR :) at least you can already design sounds and funk it up with some Brass Stabs, cutting leads, lush pads and screaming bass.

A complete list of OB-XTreme 2.0 features is provided below, in a nutshell OB-Xtreme can act as an 8 voice polyphonic, 8 voice unison mono or true (one voice) mono, a FAT mode engages the unison while also providing polyphonic unison, that means 8x8 voices power.
Most OB-X/OB-Xa functions are provided, including SAW, PULSE, TRI oscillators shapes and the peculiar SAW+PULSE which can produce an interesting +1 OCT harmonic depending on the pulse width setting.
the 2Pole filter is based on the OB-X and the 4Pole is based on the CEM3320 implementation, the 2pole has that classic SVF linear "singing" resonance accross the bandwidth while the 4pole will resonate less at lower cutoff values (a bit Moog like), a bandpass output is also provided in 2pole mode while 4pole have an optional volume loss compensation.

The Xtreme factor is the main control over the emulated OTA enduced distortion, one chip in particular the CA3080 was used a lot at different places in the circuit (although less and less over the OB synths evolution). OB-Xtreme gives some control over that, you can push them way beyond the original specs or stay at minimum for more traditional behavior, you can also bypass PRE or POST circuits for versatility. The PRE stage will act more on lower notes while the POST stage is linear across the range.

Another feature is the under the hood access so you can control the 8 voice cards voltages across the main parts. The cards variations are an important factor to mimic the analog character, while using a VCM (virtual component modeling) approach, I wanted something effective but not time consumming so I designed some pre-defined offsets and deviations that you can mix in or scatter accross all 8 voices.
You get five macro sliders: OSC (which doubles on the front panel as the "SPREAD") controlling OSC 1 and 2 tuning offsets, FILT filter envelopes offsets, AMP for amplitude envelope offsets, VCF for VCF deviation and PW for pulse width offsets. Additionaly you can toggle a realtime small random deviation per note or randomize and scatter deviations around. voltages offsets reflect on the GUI as positive or negative voltages (yellow/blue).
I removed a not so usefull temperature function that changed the EG timing to make room for individual card tuning (will be featured in September update) so we can have a ressembling chord mode.

Future Retro Revolution with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Revolution is a concept synthesizer with an intuitive interface that we feel most accurately represents the principles of time and music. From ancient sundials to modern day analog clocks, time has been represented as the circle, a cycle which never ends. Time itself is nothing more than our perception of the revolution of planets as they journey through their celestial orbit. It is this motion that we call time that can be measured, divided, and arranged to provide the foundation of music. This circular cyclic theme can furthermore be found throughout music in everything from song structure and repeating rhythms to the fundamentals of sound itself, being the sine wave. With this understanding we must conclude that music is cyclic and should so be represented in its natural form.

And so it is...the Revolution, a true analog monophonic synthesizer with an easy to use step-based digital sequencer, analog and DSP effects processing, and various interfacing for controlling MIDI, CV/Gate, and Din Sync devices.

Continuing in the tradition of building quality products, this unit is housed in a rugged aluminum chassis with aluminum side panels, a high contrast white on gun metal grey finish for superior viewing of controls in dark environments, and bright blue LEDs all around.

Beat707 New V1.2.0 Update

YouTube Uploaded by beat707videos on Apr 6, 2011

"This is the new V1.2.0 for Beat707 - Here I'm doing a quick check on Mirroring Pattern Edit with 64 steps. (32 x 1/16 and 32 x 1/32)

www.Beat707.com

An Arduino Shield.

Here's the complete list of changes for V1.2.0 as of April 06 2011

- This version uses Song Format 2, therefore is not compatible with previous Songs.
- Double Pattern Size: each pattern now holds 64 steps, instead of the 32 previous mode.
- Each pattern now has an A and B set of steps, each has 32 steps for a total of 64 steps.
- The Copy/Paste pattern area is now saved on the EEPROM. So you can copy a pattern from one song and past into another song's pattern.
- Improved the LCD code by reducing the LiquidCrystal library and creating the WLCD library on its place.
- Improved MIDI Clock by using the 16-bit Timer1 (before was 8-bit Timer2)
- BPM Range now goes from 25 to 255 BPM
- Added special Pattern Mirror Mode Editing (slow double click Shift or use the menu navigation)
- Added Midi Clock Shuffle (0 to 6)
- Added option to edit patterns from the Song mode. Just hit Record and it will go directly to the Pattern that is playing, hit Left+Right to go back to Song mode.
- When Playing in Song Mode, now you can go up and down Song Positions. (before you could only edit BPM)
- Added Left+Right key shortcut: cycles all 3 modes: Pattern, Song and File.
- Holding shift and Hiting Record will make the Shift key "stick". Release Shift and hit Record again to "un-stick" the Shift key.
- Quick Shift Click still goes from 1/16 to 1/32 step editing. (or 1/32 to 1/64 in double speed) But now, you don't see a message, just a small icon change next to the pattern number, where now shows A/B. A small square above A/B tells you are in double step editing mode.
- Better code for less Flash space even with the latest additions."

New Sequential Prophet XL Now Shipping

Announced October 23, the new Sequential Prophet XL is now shipping.

"Sequential Ships Prophet XL 76-Key Samples-Plus-Synthesis Poly Synth

Instrument Features 2.0 OS with Expanded Polyphony, New Loop, Modulation, and Effect Options

San Francisco, CA—Nov 16, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet XL — a 76-key version of their flagship Prophet X samples-plus-synthesis hybrid synth — is now shipping. The instrument debuts a 2.0 version of the OS for both the Prophet XL and Prophet X that adds significant new features including 32-voice performance mode, forward/backward sample looping, new modulation destinations (Hack, Decimate, and instrument playback delay), a new Ring Mod effect, and several other enhancements.

The Prophet XL boasts the same powerful combination of high-fidelity samples from 8Dio and full synthesis capabilities that has earned its 5-octave sibling, the Prophet X, critical acclaim — but makes the concept even more compelling for studio and stage by adding a semi-weighted-action, 76-key, premium-quality Fatar keybed.

At the heart of both the Prophet XL and the Prophet X is a sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

Dave Smith commented: “We designed the Prophet XL for musicians who wanted more of a good thing. By adding an extended, semi-weighted action keyboard and enabling 32-voice performance mode, we’ve made it even more satisfying to play the acoustic and electric pianos and other instruments where increased polyphony is crucial. Of course 32-voice mode is also enabled on the Prophet X with OS 2.0, so all of our users benefit.”

Sample content for the Prophet X series was created by sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling.” Regarding the new instrument, 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann said: “For us, it’s all about giving musicians the best tools to express themselves. The Prophet XL is a great enhancement of the original Prophet X concept. More keys and more voices means more room to explore and create.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet XL and Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet XL and Prophet X also provide 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Additional sample expansion packs are available from 8Dio. Support for user-created sample content is scheduled for December, 2018.

The Prophet XL is available now with a MAP of $4,399.

Version 2.0 of the Prophet X/XL OS can be downloaded from the Support page of the Sequential website."
