"Join Ryan Hawkins and me for an in-depth look at an extremely rare ARP 2600 called the "Blue Marvin". It was the first ARP 2600 prototype created in 1971 before the later gray faced Tonus versions of the instrument were made for sale to the public. There are a lot of quirky physical aspects to this beauty since it was never really completed for final production, but in spite of that, it sounds magnificent! In particular, there is a type of harmonic distortion that it delivers only to be found on the original R.A. Moog modular synths from the late 1960's through the early 1970's.

You'll also hear the back story about how it was found in a post office, changed hands and then how it was restored by Ryan. We'll explore the front panel by comparing it to the first production Tonus model and also give you a Hands-on demonstration of the compelling sounds that it delivers. All music in this video is composed and performed by Ryan.

Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave OS 1.5 Update Adds MPE Support, Poly Unison, Free Running OSCS & Long LFOs

new in this release:

- support for MIDI MPE controllers - enable MPE from the GLOBAL menu and explore the new modulation sources at the end of the list. Pitch bend range can be set in the MISC menu

- option for free running analog oscillators in the MISC menu which is settable per patch - In the analog waveform mode, which you are using when you select the Axx waveforms like Saw and Square, now has the option to make the waveforms not reset when you start a new note. In this mode, the oscillators will continue to drift from each other as they do on some fully analog synthesizers. There are two side effects if you are using free running for the analog waveforms:

1. When two or more oscillators are running at the same time, the phase of the waveforms will not be reset and could start at any position. As a result, there will be phase cancellation compared to having the oscillators always start at the same point. What you will hear is that the notes will change volume level slightly as the oscillators start and also drift in and out of phase with each other.

2. In the normal mode the oscillator always starts at zero. Now it could start at any point in its phase position. That means when you hit a note, a single oscillator could be at 0, +1.0, -1.0, or anywhere in between. If it starts at or close to +1.0 ot -1.0, you are going from no sound to fully on immediately. This can cause a click at the beginning of the note depending on the phase. It is noticeable mostly when using a sine wave, and not too noticeable with something like a saw or square. If you want to use this free running mode, turn the attack time up to +20 or higher to quickly fade in and avoid the potential click.

The Alan R Pearlman Foundation 2022 End-of-year recap!

"Take a look at what we've been doing this past year! From our special Fiftieth anniversary of the ARP Odyssey celebration to acquiring not one, but TWO vintage ARP Odysseys for ARPs for All and a 16-Voice Piano. We've interviewed Odyssey users from Herbie Hancock to Billy Currie, and were hosted from the UK to LA.

We've also created started some new relationships with SynthCube, SynthPlex, The Museum of Making Music, Beats by Girlz and the New England Synthesizer Festival, visited GForce in England and many friends in Los Angeles.

Next year we are finishing the first round of archiving, and focusing on fundraising for our first Artist-in-Residency and acquisitions of instruments for the ARPs for All collection.

SynthPlex 22: Shear Relic OB Inspired Poly Is Back!

"Some time back, we spoke to a young guy: Jacob Brashears (still in college) who was working on an Oberheim inspired analogue poly synth. At the time it was very inspiring and great to see some talent coming up. Then it went quiet. I mean a lot has happened since then right?
Jacob has finished school, now is working on bringing his vision to life. It's also acquired another couple of voices, so probably should be called the Relic 8 now..

Jacob has a pre-production prototype form and it's a lovely looking thing with a lot of really neat (and expensive looking) UI ideas.

Sadly we can't listen to it yet, as the semiconductor shortages have meant that they haven't been able to get it quite ready. The hardware is pretty much done, it's just now the software and auto calibration - which as we know is a non-trivial job in itself.

It's clear that he has been living and breathing this instrument for years and has really immersed himself in it's production. We really hope he can bring it to fruition in the planned timeframe which is going to be March 2023 for a limited production run. With more to come.

SynthPlex 2022 - Embodme Erae Multi-touch controller

"The Erae Touch from Embodme has slipped under our radar somewhat, as we've not seen it in the flesh before. We had a look at the unit at Synthplex and saw that there are some pretty cool features, using the large backlit control surface for some nifty interface chops. They've also managed to get the response time right down that makes it possible to trigger the completely configurable playing surface with sticks.

It puts us in mind of the Jazz Mutant Lemur crossed with the Roli blocks. Its fully MPE compatible and has an editor enabling user configurations aplenty.

"We recently reviewed the Perkons performance drum machine fro Erica Synths, but you cant beat hearing what its maker can do with it, so we were lucky to find Girts Ozolins, the main man on the booth. He showed us a little of what makes the Perkons a popular machine for performers, and also we got a look at the Syntrx II the EMS AKS inspired synthesizer with digitally controlled patch bay. It has more focus on input processing than Syntrx I.

"Jason Donnelly (aka DJ Puzzle) and Matt Yost are two of the folks behind the long estabilshed Soundtrack Loops and both are experienced music and media composers. They are working on a new brand: Array Sounds, which will focus on plug-ins and virtuakl instruments. The first product of which will be Double Scoop a simple 2 layer sample player with synthesis and effects, designed to fill your need for chill keyboard and synth sounds. They were showing a preview of the new software, now in Beta which will be launched in January 2023."

"The Five12 Vector Sequencer has a lot of fans - Daniel Miller uses it in his live and studio setups and many more. The firmware 3.0 is approaching and we got a look at some of the features coming with James Coker. He also showed us a new module - the QV-L which is a complex multi-function generator with LFOs., Envelopes and much more besides. With four modulation busses and a ton of configuration possibilities, it packs a lot into a single module.
