KORG MS-02 vintage analog interface

via this auction
"The Korg Interface MS-02 is designed for the purpose of connecting Korg MS-Series synthesizers with other synthesizers available throughout the world. This sophisticated signal processor greatly enhances the performance possibilities of the MS-Series. Among presently available music synthesizers, there are two different types of control system used for the VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) and EG (envelope generator). One of these systems is used by Korg and Yamaha; the other is employed by every other synthesizer manufacturer. The Korg MS-02 provides you with a way to change the control signals of one system into the control signals used in the other system. In this way, it acts as an interface so that any two synthesizers can be used together, provided that the synthesizers are equipped with the conventional input and output jacks for control voltage and trigger or gate signals."

Korg MS-03 Signal Processor

via this auction
"Korg MS-03 vintage pitch to voltage converter interface. This unit produces VCO CV (control voltage) signals and trigger (gate) signals so that you can use an electric guitar, microphone, or other transducer output (from an acoustic instrument, for example) to "play" a synthesizer. A variety of remote control input jacks let you use foot switches for more freedom and flexibility during live performance. With this amazing unit you can instantly put together your own guitar synthesizer, vocal synthesizer, etc., by simple connection with any synthesizer equipped with VCO CV IN and TRIGGER (Gate) IN input jacks."

Oberheim TVS

via this auction

"OBERHEIM SEM Two-Voice with built in step sequencer. Oberheim's first synthesizer was a single-voice mini-module called a SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module). However, in 1975, Oberheim created their first compact, programmable and polyphonic synthesizer by coupling two SEM modules to a 37-note keyboard and a simple analog sequencer. This was what became the Two Voice. Oberheim achieved a polyphonic sound not yet seen in ARP and Moog gear at the time by hard-wiring the two monophonic SEMs into the compact keyboard design. In 1976 Oberheim came out with another module, the Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer (see SEM). This could memorize the control voltages of many parameters for up to eight SEM modules. When these were added to the Two Voice, Oberheim finally had one of the earliest programmable and polyphonic instruments! Released alongside the Two Voice also came the Four Voice which had four SEMs installed, and a larger 49-note keyboard. Two voices was great in 1975, and eight voices was pretty monstrous in the later seventies. But, a major drawback to these first Oberheim synths was that polyphony was achieved by having multiple modules. This meant that each voice had to be independently programmed. This also means that each voice has its own filter, making real-time filter sweeps of all your voices more than a handful! Fortunately the sequencer comes in handy for controlling each voice/module independently."

YUSYNTH EMS Diode Ladder Filter

via YuSynth where you can find more info:

"Well, here is another classical and very special filter : the EMS diode ladder filter! This filter has a sound of its own and is the signature of the classical Pink Floyd's song "On the run".

My aim here was to design a quite faithful copy of this mythic filter while using components that minimize the burden of selecting a great number of matched transistors. This is why I used transistor arrays (CA3046, CA3096). However, because the CA3096 has become a rare part and is now overpriced, I have also designed a PCB with discrete trannies to replace it. As for all the other filters of my YUSYNTH project, I have added an input and an output buffer to adapt this filter to the input and output levels of my modular system.

I also added an input for voltage control of the resonance : everything was there in the original module but was not made available, probably because of the limited size of the patch pin matrix of the AKS/VCS3...

Because, my power supply standard is +15/-15V, I have included a power regulator IC (78L12) to convert +15V to +12V and a single transitor voltage regulator -15V to -9V (I wanted to use a 79L09 but changed my mind when I realized that this voltage regulator is quite a rare part and is difficult to source)."

Evolver vs. Freqbox

YouTube via Analogger
"This is a patch I came up with on the Evolver and synced it to my sequencer. Jomox M-Base for the bass drum, the snare and hi-hat are from a Roland SH-32. The Virus is used for a basic arpeggiation. Also included: Roland MKS-30 along with the Moogerfooger Freqbox oscillator thru the Moogerfooger Lowpass Filter. The Strat is thru a Damage Control Demonizer. The Korg Kaoss Pad is set to a synth patch.

For the Freqbox I patched the oscillator out into the Lowpass Filter. I tuned the oscillator to E and wrote a stepped pattern for the midi-to-cv converter which step-modulated the filter cutoff frequency. Control the voltage!

The idea for this started with the patch I created on the Evolver. It never ceases to inspire something musical and/or strange."

Richard Lainhart Releases A New Album on Ex Ovo

February 26, 2008 — Richard Lainhart, award-winning composer, performer, and filmmaker, is pleased to announce that Ex Ovo, founded in January 2006 for the love of dulcet drone music, has issued a release of his CD White Night. The disc is also available in the States from CDeMUSIC .

An excerpt from White Night can be found at www.aalfang.de.

________________________________________
Ex Ovo writes: Back in 1974, one year before Brian Eno's first landmark in ambient music, a young musician from New York wrote down a fragment of beauty's hidden story with the minimal vocabulary of sine waves on the young black skin of a Moog synthesizer. The first release on CD features Richard Lainhart's masterpiece in its original 29-minutes-version. There's no single second to add, after this time everything is told though nothing has been said.

________________________________________
Richard talks about the work's origin:
" "White Night" was composed and recorded in the late fall of 1974 at the State University of New York at Albany in the Coordinated Electronic Music Studio (CEMS). CEMS was created by my composition teacher Joel Chadabe with design and custom fabrication by Robert Moog and was, at the time, the largest integrated Moog modular synthesizer studio in the world.

"The piece consists of a dense, continuous four-note chord, each note in the chord recorded in a separate pass to one track on a Scully 4-track studio recorder. Each track consists of a single sine wave oscillator which is frequency modulated by a group of eight additional sine wave oscillators. Those oscillators are all tuned to different tones, each harmonically related to the fundamental chord tone. The amplitude of each harmonic oscillator is continuously varied under the control of an individual sequencer, and each sequencer is free-running - that is, the sequencers are not synchronized to each other, but rather running in their own independent timebases. The result is a continuously-changing complex harmonic waveform which modulates the frequency of the chord tone oscillator, generating a continuously-changing complex timbre based on the fundamental pitch of the note.

"The center tone of "White Night" is 212 Hz, slightly higher than the G below Middle C. The other notes create a chord consisting of a perfect fifth below the center tone, a major seventh just below the center tone, and a major second above the center tone. "White Night" was composed without reference to the standard A-440 tuning system, as we had no such pitch reference in the studio; I just picked a center tone that felt right, and went from there. As such, "White Night" lives in its own pitch world.

"The title "White Night" came about so: it was late December in upstate New York when I was finishing the piece, and a blizzard passed through town the night of the final mix. As I sat in the glow of the sequencers and tape decks in the University studio listening to the final version, I looked out the window and saw a security light on a building opposite the studio illuminating the blowing snow as it drifted off the roof. All I could see was the snow swirling in the light against the blackness; a moving painting continually drawn, erased, and redrawn, always changing, but always the same. It may sound bleak, but it wasn't - it was beautiful. It seemed to me that the image of the dancing whiteness perfectly matched the sound of the piece, and so I called it "White Night" to commemorate that evening of wind and snow."

Ex Ovo shows that ambient music is alive and well. I applaud their good work spreading the word -- and the music -- worldwide. — Richard

Speak and Spell Sell-Off

Pictured: a Circuit Bent Talking Teacher!

Kinda looks like a mini Haken Continuum.

Description:
"Up for auction is a circuit bent Coleco Talking teacher. His name is FREAKENTEACH. This unit is similar to the circuit bent (FREAKENSPEAK) Texas Instruments speak and spell/math/read. It can make amazing loops and bent sounds and random words. The unit will still function as a normal Talking Teacher unit when all the bend switches are in the "off" position.

I have been making strange electronic instruments and circuit bent creations for over 24 years. I have been selling on Ebay for 7 years. I only use high quality new switches, wire and other electronic components in my circuit bent units. So if you are looking for a quality circuit bent instrument, look no further, you have found it.

Here is a list of circuit bent controls:

1 loop switch that will "catch" a sound and repeat it. Endless loops to be discovered!!

1 loop advance pushbutton, push to advance to the next loop.

2 bend/glitch switches that bend the sounds and makes the unit spit out random words.

1 photo sensor with on/off switch, to vary the pitch when you move your hand over the sensor. It is similar to playing a theremin because you don't have to touch the sensor to change the pitch of the sound.

1 reset pushbutton to reset unit if it crashes.

1 volume pot to turn down the volume of the internal speaker.

1 pitch change pot to vary the pitch of the sound from high to low. The pitch of this unit goes way further down than any of the speak and spell/read/math units. Amazing low drones!

1 1/4" audio output to send the signal to FX or an amp. The internal speaker is switched off when the audio jack is plugged in.

1 brass knob for body contact. You can control the pitch of the sound by touching the pitch knob! Touch the holographic foil label with your other hand to drop the pitch even more.

1 pitch change holographic foil front label. One of the coolest features is the added pitch control that touching the holographic front label gives, you won't find this feature on any other bent unit, or as many ways to control the pitch.

This unit will work as normal with all bend switches off . It will work with 4 "C" batteries or with a 6 volt power adaptor.(not included) This unit is designed for live performance, but it also works great for recording sounds in the studio. It can make some amazing sounds and loops! It makes sounds that you can't get from any other instrument! It can sound like a theremin or a spaceman on speed! Great for techno, electronic music, sound FX."

UP Ultimate Percussion Super-Analogue Drum Synthesizer

What I don't understand about this auction is that it includes the video below which looks like an Alesis SR-16 repackaged. I watched it and don't understand the connection. If you do, feel free to comment. In regards to the repackaged Alesis SR16, what's up with that? I remember the ZOOM drum machine being repackaged here? What the hell is that? Hows does that work? I'd never expect to see the Andromeda repackaged. If anyone knows how that works, feel free to comment.
