SimpleMidiPad & More

via Analog Industries where you'll find the full post. The interesting bit:

On the surface it's a simple MIDI pad controller for the iPad. There are a number of apps that can do this, but...

"Assuming it is approved and those of you that try it provide some good feedback, I'll adjust the framework accordingly and bang out a couple of the other simple ideas I have. Then we'll give porting the Axon sequencer a whirl, which is necessarily a much more involved process. If you have a request for a specific MIDI generator for the iPad, now is the time to bring it up."

Now an Axon sequencer on the iPad, well, that would be very, very cool. Until then, any simple sequencing features would be more than welcome.

New iPad gets announced tomorrow BTW. It will be interesting to see if it has an impact on the used market for soon to be last gen iPads.

The vOICe - Video to Audio - Seeing With Sound

Brian writes in with the following:
"I came across this program while searching for a PC version of Metasynth. It can use either live video or a picture and converts it to sound. Lots of experimental stuff too - using the mouse position as input, sonifying a URL (?!), and much more. Very cool!...

It actually uses images (either video or still pictures) to generate sound. I've attached an AVI illustrating what was generated from a wolf picture. You can apply a filter for what colors to use - kind of a spectrogram ran backwards. Speaking of, I attached another AVI illustrating what a spectorgram (made in Audacity) of me saying "funky town" sounds like after running it through vOICe. There's even a mode for entrainment of brain waves (must register to use that mode)!" Videos below.

via http://www.seeingwithsound.com/
"The vOICe vision technology for the totally blind offers the experience of live camera views through sophisticated image-to-sound renderings. In theory this use of digital senses could lead to synthetic vision with truly visual sensations ("qualia") through crossmodal sensory integration, by exploiting the existing multisensory processing and neural plasticity of the human brain through training and education. The vOICe implements a form of sensory substitution where the goal is to bind visual input to visual qualia with a minimum of training time and effort, and improve quality of life (QoL) for blind users."

Update via Brian in the comments: "I tried to sonify the Matrixsynth page URL, but I got an error of "Too many links" :)"

Create vast sound-scapes, unique synth sounds and total chaos, all packed inside your favorite childhood toy. The Casio SK-1 is loaded with original features, sampling capabilities, and great sounds (for what it was....) **When no modifications are engaged this will behave as a 100% stock Casio SK-1 Diabolical Devices aka Class A Electronics, LLC is a leader in Professionally Modified Synthesizer and Audio Equipment, Expert Repair Services, and has a full line of Hand-Wired Tubes Amplifiers and Effects (Diabolical Amplification). Diabolical Modified Casio SK-1 Features: 16 point circuit-bending interface: Heavy-duty 1/8" jacks on hand made turret board panel. This patch-bay allows you to scramble sound data as the synth addresses it, and the result is an endless variety of weird effects, noise, filtered and modulated bends, and one of a kind sounds (seriously, you might one hear some things once). It's a mixed bag of playable bends and bends that play themselves. These patch locations will affect each preset sound differently and also affect samples and chord/auto-play functions. This patch-bay also allows you to cross-patch with other bent devices for more ROM scrambling goodness.

4 Hard wired toggle switch bends: Preset circuit bent points at the flip of a switch

Clock/Pitch mod: An external clock generator has been added. When engaged you have control over the master pitch of all keyboard voices, drum sounds, and bent sounds ranging from well above to WAY below original pitch. This modification has a bypass switch, pitch control and LED status indicator.

The editor is able to open and save .txt files, for quick text recall with Z-DSP screen formatting. It also exports .hex files if needed. But the coolest part is...it now writes directly to Numberz! Just one application for all of your text editing. No more using pickit2 and having to select devices or eprom parts. Just click the write button, confirm and its done!

Please donate to show your appreciation for our programmer. He has made an awesome tool for our Z-DSP projects!...and has done it on his own time!

This donation will not only help with the continuous stream of Mountain Dew needed to keep the code flowing, but it will also encourage future development for the modular community. Thank you."

BUGBRAND Weevil08 synth oscillator touch

via this auction

Description via BugBrand where you'll find samples.

"Released Feb08
Here's the new Weevil08 - three lo-fi oscillators quasi-ringmodulated together, with PowerStarve, Filter, 9-point-TouchPlate and internal MiniAmp.

While the core Weevil circuitry is similar to the Postcard, the sonic results are quite different - for one, each Osc has a range switch for Hi tones or Lo clickety, and the output levels are much more stable due to a comparator circuit (don't worry - there's still loads of chaos within!). The combination of PowerStarve and responsive TouchPlate opens up a vast array of sounds that are played in a way unlike any other instrument. The internal MiniAmp is now a standard feature and gives a pretty different tone/response from the output jack. Plugging in a jack conveniently disconnects the internal MiniAmp.

This is a newly standardised version built with pro-PCBs for improved feel and replicatability, available in Green or Red with chunky knobs in a sprayed plastic case and running off a single 9V battery.

You can check the block diagram for details of the internal arrangement, but it may be best just to listen to the mp3 demo (11MB) that wobbles through some of the wide-ranging sounds available!"

BUGBRAND Micro BugCrusher

via this auction
Description via BugBrand where you'll find samples.
"The BugCrusher effect comes from using a Sample & Hold circuit clocked at audio rates - this Sample Rate Reduction is an analogue process and should not be confused with BitCrushing [most BitCrush plugins will have Sample Rate and Bit Depth controls]. Rate Reduction sounds somewhat like RingModulation, but tends to appear more musical - at high frequencies you get a fizzle to the sound while maintaining most of the original audio, and at low frequencies any high notes will seem to wrap-around and the overall sound is much more chaotic. You could read about Aliasing and Nyquist for further technical details.

The Micro or μCrusher features two simple controls, one to set the Sample Rate and one to Blend between the Dry and Effected signals.

There is a button to Engage/Bypass the effect with a status LED. As the case and switch are not designed to be stompable, an external footswitch can be attached via the front jack socket. This should be a simple momentary switch such as keyboard sustain pedal. Switching is achieved electronically and is noiseless - the effect is not true-bypass and audio always passes through an input buffer amplifier even when bypassed. The devices has a unity gain structure and applies no amplification to signals.

The Micro is happy with instrument or line input signals. Input and Output connections are on the rear with standard Mono 1/4" Jack Sockets - note that Mono cables should always be used as inserting a jack plug into the Input socket serves to apply power to the unit in typical stompbox manner.

Power is supplied on a standard external 'Boss-type' 9V Regulated DC Supply with 2.1mm centre-negative barrel plug. A simple battery connector is also supplied with each unit. Max. power consumption is 10mA and the device is polarity and over-current protected.

The MicroCrusher features PCB material panel and end-cheeks and is enclosed in a metal case measuring 12 x 8 x 4.5 cm. Some of the metal cases come in black dependent on supply. Each device comes in a stamped cardboard box with instruction sheet. The Micro is covered by a 1 year parts & workmanship guarantee."

Note the date of the video. The video was just linked in the auction for demo purposes and is not the one for sale. The following is from the description: "The build quality of the Syndrum is typically seventies American ( moog Arp) but seems to do all that's needed occasionally you get a sticky slider or switch but most of us can deal with that if you want to fully restore it is is thankfully fully discreet circuitry and all parts are available i haven used the pads ( loom is included ) i was triggering this from voltage triggers or sound sources i don't think the 4 pads are working properly but its probably only a minor issue with leads or connections it has been describes as 4 Moogs in a box? http://electro-music.com/forum/post-15480.html i can tell you it has a very wide range of sounds and extremely wide range LFOs at times it can get out of control but if you can control it then huge subsonic kicks . crispy snares and melodic toms toms are all there all 4 voices are identical this has a far wider range of sounds than other electro drums of the late seventies ( like Simmons SDS5 - i have owned all of them at some stage ) the book had not been written yet and rules were broken"

The other instruments are Böhm Station One workstation and Roland E-15 keyboard."

Orion Pro-9

"The new Pro-9 generator is a complete overhaul of the former XR-909 generator. The Pro-9 offers virtual-analog drum sound modelling of breathtaking quality and accuracy, not only making it indistinguishable from the analog reference hardware, but also providing that analog "feel" which mere sample-based recreations lack.

The user interface comprises controls for each drum sound, as well as a classic drum machine step sequencer, for quick and easy pattern programming. There is a total of 11 sounds that can be synthesized, including Bass Drum, Snare, Toms, Clap, Rimshot, Hihats and Cymbals. The Pro-9 is fully compatible with the General MIDI (GM) drum map, so it can be played via MIDI gear as well."

The 255 inverts (around 5v) which is weird, but makes perfect sense in the Buchla boat.
