M4L : Build a MIDI Synth in 1 minute! Pt 1 :

Learn to make your own Max for Ableton live synths!

YouTube via eameres2 | Feb 28, 2011 |

"Yes, it's basic, monophonic, and limited to sin waves, but I challenge you to create a velocity sensitive synth in less than 1 minute with fewer max objects!

I'm going to add features in future tutorials, including polyphony, other waveforms, filters, envelopes and much more, so subscribe and tune in! Will include modulation for that dubstep/DNB wobble of course!"

M4L : One minute synth Pt 2 : the ADSR~ envelope : Learning Max for Ableton live tutorial

Uploaded by eameres2 on Mar 2, 2011

"Second Part of our "one minute max" tutorials. Today we add an ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release" envelope to our mono-synth. This allows you to control the basic timing of the sound. Short attack and long decay/release for a bell like tone, full sustain and no release for a flute/organ like tone, etc.

I was able to get the bulk of the work done in under a minute, but I took a some extra time to explain things and label our new synths parameters. I don't want to short-change anyone!

Note that the first argument of the ADSR~ object is the trigger, and it preserves the velocity sensitivity "feature" we have going! The envelope varies from 0.0 to 1.0 so multiplying it against our signal is what gives our sound "shape".

Subscribe and tune in 2 days or so, we'll be adding a basic filter and eventually be adding polyphony! And of course useful dubstep and DNB effects!"

R54 MetaSonix Eurorack Module

via this auction
"this is a brand new module, never racked. barely used. the r-54 uses a triode-pentode in a unique wien-bridge circuit, to provide clean sine-wave oscillation. using a vactrol, the pitch of the r-54 is sweepable from less than 20 hz to more than 5 khz, continuously, via front-panel control or a cv input. by adjusting the waveshape/resonance control, the sinewave signal produced by the r-54 can be trimmed to less than 10% thd (depending on operating pitch)---with none of the problems inherent in solid-state oscillators and sine waveshapers. because the wien bridge contains no piecewise sine shaper or amplitude-control circuit or component. the tube itself performs that job. so the distortion products are entirely low-order, unlike the "sine waves" that solid-state vcos or samplers produce.

turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. the simplicity of the r-54 will fool you--its behavior is odd and radical, and it will take you months or years to fully explore all of its quirks.

now for the special trick. plug an audio signal into the audio input. instantly, the r-54 transforms from a vco into a bandpass resonant voltage-controlled filter, with the same range as in vco operation -- 20 hz to 5 khz. its behavior and sound are unique. again, you will be kept busy for years exploring all of its strangeness.

cv response: hz/v. use a suitable midi/cv interface, or use our r-60 interface to obtain perfect equal-tempered tuning every time. maximum output signal, 12 v p-p power requirement: +-12v dc, 250 ma. (all specifications are approximate and may vary from sample to sample.) tubes used: 19kg8, 6ak5"

Oscillosine - Coming soon from Hollow Sun - Vintage HP Oscillator

"Almost as though it was found in the back of a damp garage after decades of neglect, Hollowsun has created Oscillosine. Reminiscent of an oddball inventor's strange homebrew creation, Oscillosine is designed to conjour the sights, sounds and smells of a 1940s experimenter's laboratory... glowing valves, otherworldly audio and maybe a hint of pipe tobacco.

The samples for Oscillosine are taken from a vintage tube Hewlett Packard sine wave test oscillator estimated to date back to the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier.

The more voices (or notes) the thing tries to play, the circuitry seems to strain slightly and the valves glow brighter which is visible through the front panel aperture.

Oscillosine offers serious abstract synthesis for the adventurous to bring something different to your productions whilst also providing more conventional sounds for more mainstream work.

For safety reasons, be sure to wear a white lab coat when operating Oscillosine."

Oberheim Xpander

via this auction

"The Xpander is basically a modular synth that does not use patch cords. It has six voices with completely independent control over each of them. You can stack six different sounds together if you want or any other combination thereof. Each patch can have up to 20 modulation sources. Each voice has its own analog out and cv/gate input. There are also left, right, and mono outputs. Probably the most flexible synth ever made and looks great, too. This piece requires serious programming to get the most out of it, but will definitely reward the time you put into it."

JUNO 8

YouTube via rudiedisone | Feb 28, 2011 |

Update: YouTube description added:
"This synth exists only in in my imagination! I wanted to imagine, and replicate what an 8 part multitimbral Alpha Juno would sound like. In fact, if it did exist, here's a small audio demo of what it actually would sound like. Play it in HD to do it justice!

Using only my Alpha Juno 2, the first pad part was recorded in Pro Tools playing manually, stacking 8 tracks.

The second part was created using MIDI sequencing in Pro Tools. I laid down a simple MIDI arpeggio and started recording the audio parts 1 stereo track at a time.

The oscillator de-tuning was accomplished by simply de-tuning using the Tune/function button while mulating it on a few of the audio passes . The "reversed" arpeggio sections were simple audio edits to the stereo mixdown.

I've always loved this synth, with it's unique rich sound. Now I love it even more
as an 8 part multitimbral (albeit imagined, but possible to replicate) SYNTH BEAST!"

Intimacy

YouTube via attorks | Feb 28, 2011 |

"Hello my YouTube and Modular synth friends. It's been some weeks since I uploaded my last video. But I was looking for a way to record the music of my video's in multitrack. Multitrack recording allows me to develop the live recorded music later on by adding, altering, removing individual audio tracks for each instrument and mixing the tracks properly. So I was busy investigating the various possibilities to do this. I ended up upgrading my Pro Tools LE 8 software, which I did not use much anymore, to version 9 to be able to broaden the scope for audio interfaces. Then I was lusted for a Mackie Onyx 1220i because this integrates a mixer and an audio interface for each channel. But the remaining budget was to tight for that. So then I bought a second hand Alesis MultiMix 16 FireWire which is capable of more or less the same for a smaller budget. Now I can record up to 16 channels and the stereo main mix in one go. I used the stereo main mix for this YouTube video so this is still a live recording. If I develop this recording further I will upload it to the music section of my website.

This improvisation is in essence somewhat minimal. There a four sequences going on. I manually alternate between rows 1 and 2 of the Synthesizers.com Q960 which is driving the Synthesizers.com Modular. I also use 2 presets on the Doepfer MAQ16/3 to alternate the sequences for the self-built Modular with a 4- and 6-step sequence and the Ian Fritz Teezer Through-Zero VCO with the Blacet MiniWave with two 8-step sequences. The Waldorf Q Keyboard does a 2-step sequence for the bass. Chords are played on the Roland XP-80 and the Waldorf Q Keyboard. The solo is performed on the Clavia Nord Lead 1. The MIDI clock for all this comes from Pro Tools 9 to keep it in sync with the Pro Tools bars and beats. Pro Tools also transposes the sequences on the Synthesizers.com Q960 and the Doepfer MAQ16/3.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website soon."

SUPER RARE ELECTRO HAMONIX GUITAR SYNTHESIZER RACK

via this auction

"These units are impossibly scarce to come by, and were made in such low numbers, and were VERY expensive when they came out.

Unlike the Microsynth/Bass Microsynth, this is a true pitch to voltage guitar synth with three VCO(voltage controlled oscillators, an extensive voltage controlled filter section(VCF), and a voltage controlled amplitude section, with portamento(variable pitch glide), and a vast array of configurations, waveforms, fuzz mix, clean signal blend to help create some truly magical sounds.

This of course is a monophonic synth(track single notes only..Microsynths are the same way), but because of vast number of sounds, variations, and interactivity of controls, you don't miss playing chords...

Setting the sensitivity control is key, along with using a fresh set of strings for proper intonation, and using the neck pick up gives you more of the fundamental tone so the unit can track best.

The key I found(and this is not mentioned in the manual), is to lightly dampen the strings(palm-muting with the right hand for right-handed players), as it further enhances the fundamental tone, and this allows you to use the bridge pick up as well with quite good results.

The sounds are rich, sweet, fat, and full on analog and this unit requires no special pick up like many others...just plug in and play."

Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad

YouTube via FairlightInstruments | Feb 27, 2011 |

"Introducing the Fairlight App for iPhone & iPad, available from the Apple App Store in March 2011. Over 30 years since the original Fairlight CMI first changed the way we make music, we are proud to present the iPhone & iPad Apps, giving you the experience of a CMI Series IIx in the palm of your hand, complete with the full Series IIx factory library and expandable to include the best of the Series III library and even your own samples.

Marvel at the then revolutionary Page R step sequencer, gasp at the three dimensional waveforms in Page D and bask in the wonder of some of the most famous sounds of the Eighties!

The sound track of this video is also one of the app's built-in demos. 'Octagonalle' was created using original Series II library sounds on the Fairlight iPad app by producer/composer Justin Shave. Shave confronted his first CMI in 2006 when he co-produced Darren Hayes' album "This Delicate Thing We've Made." Darren had decided that the Fairlight was the only instrument which could deliver the '80s sensibility he was seeking, bought one on eBay, and handed it to Shave to tame. The rest is history.

The full dance track is available as a free download from the Fairlight web site.

http://www.fairlightinstruments.com.a...

The app celebrates the release of the strictly limited edition CMI 30A. 100 hand built recreations of the CMI IIx, using state of the art technology to bring you the true Fairlight CMI experience as never before.

Order yours at http://fairlightinstruments.com.au
