Uniton Swissecho 2000 Update

Swissdoc updated his page on the Uniton Swissecho 2000

"I updated the page with some statements from Mr. Garcia about the AKG relationship and Uniton History. In addition I added some more sound samples from guitar amps with spring reverbs. Great how muffled they sound in comparision with the high-end tank of the Swissecho 2000."

Do a find for "comparison to guitar amps' for the demos when you get there, and Mr. Garcia of course for Mr.Garcia's comments.

More pics and a couple of vids at the auction while up.

"A very cool but underrated analogue synth. Built in 1978, before the age of the New Romantics, this synth had Gary Numan written all over it. Since this CS-10 is 100v we will be including a step down transformer free of charge.

Sonics: positive points - synthesis on the CS10 is really straightforward and within about 10 minutes of playing it I had bass leads in the same league as the SH101. The low and high band VCFs sound really great and allow you to cut and drop the bass whenever you want. The external input also allows you to add the Yamaha CS10 sound to ANY of your favourite synths, samples etc. This is probably the winning feature for me."

More pics at the auction while up.

"The Roland JP8000 - made in 1996 but travelling back to 1980s courtesy of analogue modelling. Analogue purists will probably look the other way, however synth lovers that want great analogue sounds with the ability to tweak away using features found on many of Roland classic synths (Juno 106, SH101 etc) will love this 49 key blue metallic plastic box of fun.

It’s a great keyboard for live sessions and studio sessions. Live musicians can easily find their desired sounds by tweaking away at the vast array of oscillators, filters and effects – as was the case with all of Roland classic Juno and SH range. The only time you need to access the LCD backlight screen menu is when you want to select one of the 128 preset patches, or one of your own programmed sounds (up to 128). There are a range of bass, lead and “atmospheric” sounds. The leads sound sharp and bass sounds range between deep down, dirty and squelchy. In addition, there is also Midi In and Out, but strangely enough no Midi Thru

There are 2 main oscillators, each offering a range of waveforms (e.g saw, square, triangle etc). There is also a 4 stage ADSR. However my favourite effect is the chorus as it reminds me of the Juno 106 chorus sound. The JP also has an arp and it is easy to set up and use, but the only negative point is that there is no “tap” feature for you to sync up to beats.

Overall it is a great synth doing what it says on the tin “analogue modelling”. The JP8000 could be put in the same league as other analogue modelling synths such as Korg’s MS2000, Radias and R3. However, the JP8000 will not steal the Juno and the SH's god-like legendary name status, but it will allow mere mortals to experience these sounds at an affordable price."

ROLAND SH-101 Vintage Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"For the few that may not be familiar with the the unit, the SH-101 is a monophonic analog synthesizer famous for being a monster of a bass machine. Equipped with 3 separate wave forms, the square, the sawtooth and a dedicated sub-oscillator, the SH-101's mixer section allows you to mix in as much or as little of each wave to satisfy your inner basshead. The 101 is just as happy pushing out deep bowel disrupting sub bass as it is doing snappy funky rubbery acid type bass.

Or, silence all the oscillators and make the filter self-oscillate to create that subby 808 kick and then tweak all of its parameters to make it sit in your mix. Samples simply cant touch it.

You would, however, be making a mistake only thinking of the 101 as a bass machine. It is a full-on synth and as such can be made to produce deep evolving soundscapes, leads or bleeps and bloops (as they are technically known) and synthesised percussion, as well as the hardcore electronic sounds that will freak your cat out.

Within the manual, which is downloadable online, is a section with suggested settings for coaxing a wide variety of sounds out of the SH-101,... these include some of the usual things you'd expect to see such as electric piano, clarinet ,tuba, violin and vibraphone. The settings for making it self-oscillate are also there, but there are some odd sounds as well such as Machine Gun, Space Sound, and my personal favorite Funny Cat."

Roland SH-2 Vintage Analog Monophonic Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

Tons more pics at the auction while up. Note the mini tune knobs.
"The Roland SH-2 is a monophonic analog synthesizer that comes with two individual voltage controlled oscillators and a third sub-bass oscillator, making the SH-2 sound very warm, fat and gritty, especially when the oscillators are detuned. Unlike the SH-101 and its singular oscillator, the SH-2 can sound both "vintage" and modern depending on how the knobs and faders are set, while the SH-101 has a distinctly clean sound in comparison. The SH-2 excels at bass in an organic way that the SH-101 could never compete with, and it performs brilliantly on leads, being upfront and in your face without being harsh.

However, if you're into that vintage 70's sound, and love the sound of raw, dirty bass on vinyl or tape, but the classic Moog sound is a bit too tame for you, then the SH-2 is probably what you're looking for. The SH-2 is capable of being deep and subby, warm and airy, or raw and dirty all at the twist of a knob or a flick of a fader.

The SH-2's filter can also be made to self oscillate, just like the SH-101, which gives you that deep hard hitting subby kick, but of the two, I personally prefer the self-oscillation of the SH-2, its dirtier, slightly sweeter and has more chunk, while the SH-101's is more straightforward and to the point. Both will give you a thunderous bowel moving bass kick, but which you prefer ill have more to do with your personal musical inclinations.

For those of you who may be trying to decide between the SH-2 or the SH-101, the sound you're after is more important than the differences in their features. While the SH-101's sequencer and arppegiator is incredibly useful and just stupid amounts of fun both live and in studio, the SH-2 simply sounds fatter, like you've lifted a sample off of a 70's record, warm and raw and full of character. In comparison, the SH-101 can sound plastic and "digital". They both do things that the other cant, but despite being part of the same line, and despite what certain websites may say, their sounds are very different."

Quad Nand Mood Cube Oscillator synth CIRCUIT BENT

YouTube Published on Jul 1, 2012 by TheZombiest

via eBay UK

"An ambient light source and square-wave nosie maker.

The synth is based around a 4093 quad nand gate CMOS chip.
Capable of hideously beautiful beepy noise.
The 4 cascaded oscillators interact with each other to create a relentless range of synth tones.
The power starve dial adds further modulation and manipulation of the oscillations.

The noise-making circuit is built into a Mood Cube I got from RED5.
The Mood Cube lights up using 3 LEDs. I hacked the circuit to affect the rate of the light cycle.
I also added a voltage starve for this circuit too. The reason being this; when the LEDs are on full power,
they drain power from the 4093. This in turn adds further lovely modulation to the tones.

The controls are as follows:

4 dials on top to control the rate and tone of the oscillations.
1 dial on the left side for the 4093 power starve.
2 dials on the right side. 1 for LED rate and 1 for LED intensity.
2 switches on the front. 1 momentary push button and 1 toggle switch.
1 output jack located on the back side.
1 on/off switch and 9v battery holder on the underside of the cube.

The cube fits well into the palm and can be enjoyed by anyone with a passion for harsh, grinding noise terrorism and pretty colours.
It's powered by a single 9v battery which is housed in the bottom of the cube.
There's a 6.35mm jack socket for hooking up to your amp/mixer/effects.
There's no internal speaker!"

"It is being listed for parts or repair, please read the auction fully before bidding. No returns on this item. The major issue is that does power on, but I am unable to get any sounds out of it but some noise. I tried all the different outputs and nothing. So without getting any sound I am unable to test the unit any further...
Right above that tempo knob you can see a little jack for plugging in a rhythm module. I've seen a few different versions of this machine, and this is the one with that module jack so if you have or can find any of those rare rhythm cartridges, you can plug it in and access additional rhythms! I do not have any rhythm cartridges, but they do occasionally pop up here on eBay.

There is a sheet stapled to the inside that has some schematics and diagrams on how to calibrate the sounds on the boards. It will certainly come in handy for anyone who picks this up to restore."

A live looping improv jam performed on a DJ TechTools "MIDI Fighter 3D." No phrases or pre-reocrded loops were used. Only single notes are being triggered from an instance of NI's Kontakt for drums, and three separate instances of NI's Massive for the bass, lead, and polyphonic synth. The bank-select buttons at the top of the unit selects the proper instrument in Ableton Live.

Tilting the unit to the right controls a low-pass filter on the synths. A backward tilt controls the resonance on those filters, and tilting the unit forward controls modulation/vibrato. The side buttons are controlling Ableton's loopers, and are also used to engage the master filter at the end of the song.

Lemur on the iPad is being used to clear loops and control reverb and delay on all four instruments.

"This one is the black reissue model 7030 but same exact sound as the grey model excel you won't have to worry about the power supply overheating, so it's a bit more desirable and stable. Really great sound that I'd take over any of the Akai MPC series, even the 60. It's fully functional and was always kept in a smoke free home studio. Even the original seal is still in tact on the back meaning it's never had to get serviced or been tampered with. The screen is bright though to read it you have to be standing over the machine. OS 1.2 on the discs is included. Includes a copy of the original manual, power cable (not pictured) and 11 discs to get you started. 9 of these discs contain direct copies of the sounds from the original Emu Sp1200 library! "This is a Japanese 100v model, I'll supply a basic converter for it to run in the UK but there are better, more versatile converters on the market. 100% functional, even comes with the plastic protective shield that originally lay over the face of the synth underneath the sliders (this was fitted when I bought it but thought it was a bit like sex with a condom so I removed it). Contrary to what I've seen elsewhere this isn't better than a sh-2, 09 or 101, just different, they all have their strong points, compared to the 101 I used to have I much prefer the controls/sliders on this, but I really miss the sequencer on the former. Also the trigger in is +15v as opposed to +5v like the 101, which I found to be a pain as most other gear is +5v compatible. Key action is clunky and horrible in my opinion, just like the other 70's Rolands I've tried/used, but it's down to taste I guess. Anyone interested should come view this first to see for themselves how shockingly good the condition is and to assure themselves of it's working condition too."

Crumar DS-1 vintage analog monophonic synthesizer

"This is the ORIGINAL DCO synthesizer model. Around the time my recently turned 52 year old body was graduating from HS Crumar was selling this item. A synthesizer that would have tuning stability. Yet they called it DCO when in reality the control is ANALOG....however the generation of that initial waveform was a digital chip... a 74LS221 set up as a relaxation oscillator with a capacitor. In other words the analog control currents charge a capacitor to the threshold of the chip and it discharges the cap at that point and then starts a new charging cycle while outputting a waveform that is tied to that frequency.

Anyway DIGITAL was a new buzz word back then :-). Then they didn't want to emphasize the fact that everything AFTER the digital chips that create the initial waveforms is analog. Down to the details of the delay circuit for the LFO where the flexible modulations can be made to GRADUALLY arise after the strike of a note, rather than abruptly like on polysix and some other common analog synths. So this is a fairly powerful analog beast in other words that has oscillators that stay stable. I acquired a DS2 which adds a poly section into the mix and extra lfo so decided to let this one go since... they are otherwise extremely similar.

FOR THE COLLECTOR though..they built a few thousand DS-2's it appears. THey built probably (from the serials we've seen) less than 200 of the DS--1. So it is one of the most collectable 'landmark' synths in history.

THis one as you can see is in really awesome shape for it's age. I'll put lots of end padding in the box so that corners dont' get smashed and the innards don't get trashed. Will final check it before shipment. The tune pots were a little iffy as I recall last I played it so I'll clean those. Otherwise it was working awesome! I got this from a guy in Hawaii! Serial number A72 as I remember. I think we've seen serials up to A 144 or like that.."

Modular Sounds 3

YouTube Published on Jul 1, 2012 by pjoris2

"I wanted to do something structured exploring basic wave shaping, but got carried away and endup with something unstructured with only a little waveshaping. That's modulars for you ... Here is a quick recording of what I ended up with, just to have a some start to hopefully some more and better videos.

The patch:
- basic sequence on the ASol SQ8, clocked by a AS LFO
- through Doepfer A-156 quantizer (transposed by AS Sorceror keyboard)
- controlling an AS VCO, output saw/triangle, waveform controlled by another AS LFO
- amplitude envelope controlled by basic AS Envelope generator-VCA patch triggered by SQ8 trigger out
- in AS echo module
- one output from the echo goes directly to the mixing board
- the other in an AMS JP8 filter, resonance high up, freq controlled by a (slow) LFO and a VCO (which I turn up at the end)
- other inputs in the filter: o some random stuff from the harvestman hertz donut o and equally random stuff from the synthesis technology cloud generator which was processed by the dopefer reverb
- all this goes into the AS frequency shifter (with some frequency modulation from another LFO) to give some stereo spread
- and this also goes into the mixing board."

Accessing the Casio CZ Series Hidden Waveforms

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Accessed via the iCZ - iControlMIDI (iTunes) Casio CZ series editor on iPad.
Quick tutorial: The Casio CZ series are Phase Distortion synths - Casio's version FM synthesis. With Yamaha FM synthesis there are carrier waveforms and modulator waveforms. The carrier is what you hear and the modulator modulates. The DX7 has various combinations of them modulating each other referred to as algorithms. On the CZ series, and referenced below, Waves are carriers and "Window Waves" are modulators.

"We are using a Line 1 + Line 2' structure, but not using both Lines at the same time. Line 1 DCO Wave 1 is Null (Hidden Wave); Line 1 DCO Wave 2 is Sine Sync and Line 1 Window Wave is Triangle. Line 2 DCO Wave 1 is Double Sine; Line 2 DCO Wave 2 is Off and Line 2 Window Wave is Spike (Hidden Wave).
In the first part, only Line 1 can be heard.
In the second part, we are using iControlMIDI increase the DCW1 Level 1 to max which makes the Window Modulation sounds like a resonant filter.
In the third part and last, we are using iControlMIDI to add Line 2' (so with Detune) and you can hear the Window Wave Spike effect which almost sounds like a distortion whereas the Line 2 DCO Wave 1 Double Sine sounds like a back-end sawtooth.
There is a very short software delay and software chorus."
