"This synth nails the Jean Michel Jarre string sound with two types of chorus ensemble effect along with a full rotary speaker sound on the string section. Using a combo of VCO modulation using LFO with ensemble and a bit of rotary speaker you can make some very awesome sounding string pads. It is hard to say how many of these were made, but I have never seen one for sale before. [some have gone up here - there is one currently on MATRIXSYNTH CLASSIFIEDS]

The Multivox MX-3000 is actually a combination of 3 synths in one case:
-A monophonic Bass-synth. This synth is capable of 3 kinds of bass-sounds: soft, medium & sharp, and only playable on the lowest 2 octaves. It has portamento with adjustable speed and you can choose out of 3 types of preprogrammed EGs:
-ADR
-ADSR
-Hold
Only the Release is adjustable.

-A polyphonic (String)Synth. This synth has a polyphony of 61 and contains 8 presets which you can alter with the onboard filters. Presets are: Soft Bass (with adjustable volume), Wood, Brass, Reed, String, Piano, Honky Tonk & Harpsichord. The last 3 presets are velocity sensitive which is adjustable. The polysynth contains an LFO for VCO as well for VCF.

The VCO contains a glide/bend function which can be switched off and LFO-modulation with delay is possible. The VCF contains CutOff, Resonance, EG-intensity and LFO Modulation. There are 2 preprogrammes EG-settings, ADR & ASR. You can also bypass these settings and use your own Attack and Decay/Release settings. Also present are a Ensemble-mode which thickens the sound and a Fullrotor which is actually a kind of Phaser. Speed and intensity are adjustable.

-A monophonic leadsynth This synth is only playable on the upper 3 octaves. The VCO contains of sawtooth, square, pulse, triangle waves and noise. Portamento is possible and the waves can be transposed to 3 octaves (Low, Medium, High). LFO-modulation is also possible. The VCF contains an ADSR, CutOff, Resonance, EG-intensity (for the VCF-ADSR) and LFO Modulation. The VCA contains an ADSR, LFO-Modulation and a Selektor which can be switched from the normal ADSR to Repeat or Hold. The LFO is available in sawtooth, sinus and square.

Every section has it's own volume and output an can be switched on or off, so it's possible to use all 3 sections at once. All in all makes this synth a truly unique one, both in it's possibilities as in the sounds."

The SparkPunk Sequencer & Sound Kit

Published on Aug 22, 2014 SparkFun Electronics

"The SparkPunk Sequencer is a musical control voltage sequencer designed to control the SparkPunk Sound Kit. With the pair, you can create ten-step musical motifs, but there are hidden opportunities in the sequencer: it can be modified and connected to external hardware in clever and interesting ways. The SparkPunk Sequencer cycles among ten steps, reading the slider and switch for each, producing corresponding analog voltages on the output pins. It offers hands-on control, with its array of knobs, sliders, and switches while seamlessly integrating with the SparkPunk Sound Generator for your creative musical enjoyment.

"The SparkPunk Sequencer is a musical control voltage sequencer designed to control the SparkPunk Sound Kit.

Unlike typical sequencers, this kit offers many tricks and modifications like adjusting Sequence length by connecting solder pads together at the bottom right of the PCB, routing pins to make a one-shot sequence playback, even creating a tempo clock or influencing the analog signals of LEDs. If any of that sounds too simple you can interface with more hardware like synchronizing multiple sequencers and more!

Be aware, the SparkPunk Sequencer comes as a solderable kit that is slightly more complex than most SparkFun soldering kits with a greater variety of components."

"The SparkPunk Kit is a sound generator made in the spirit of the Atari Punk Console. Rather than simply recreating the Atari Punk, the SparkPunk is a new design that springs from a similar foundation. It starts with a dual 555 timer IC, then adds a second tone source, sub-octaves and a bandpass filter. With all of the knobs and switches, a lot of tonal variations are possible. As a through-hole kit, the SparkPunk can also be easily extended and modified, expanding the palette of tones even further.

The SparkPunk is a very simple synthesizer, using the somewhat conventional arrangement of oscillators that feed a filter. All you need to know to play this sound generator is to press the button, operate the control knobs, listen to the results, and adjust your music to how you want it. The SparkPunk is intended for you to explore and have fun! Some people are drawn to mellow, soothing sounds, while others prefer clangourous tones, and that’s fine, to each their own. With all of the controls, you should be able to explore both ends of the spectrum.

In addition, the SparkPunk is quite customizable as well. Any knob with a 0.25" inner diameter can be attached to the tops of each potentiometer, external speaker lines can be soldered into the board for a more permanent sound distrobution option, and photocells can be added to control the kit without actually touching it. There are plenty more optional modifications that can be added and played with."

m!lTone- Portable Air Synth & MIDI controller

m!lTone - The body is the musical instrument

"Two m!lTones are being used in MIDI mode. Each m!lTone is assigned to a different MIDI instrument. The upper body is used to play the top m!lTone. The feet are being used to play bottom. Sorry the bottom m!lTone was accidentally not filmed. Behold the dancer Casey Urban. This was filmed in the 1920's ; )"

On Kickstarter

"The m!lTone is an open-source synth & MIDI controller.Create music & control video, lights & sound w/ this refreshingly original device.

We are excited to introduce the m!lTone, a portable hands-free ultrasonic synthesizer, MIDI controller & more. Use the "Air Controller" mode with your hands, body, feet, or ANY reflective surface to control video, lights, and sound like never before!

The m!lTone features three "Air" modes: Continuous Air, Weighted Air, & Discrete Air.

Using "Discrete Air" mode one can quickly make great melodies and songs. Select from a bank of 200 scales from all over the world, including 40 maqams (scales) with quarter tones, to change the sound and mood of your song. Use the built-in speaker or hook it up to an amp and let your musical creativity flow. Up to 3 voices with independent assignable wave types and note offsets to create endless possible sound combinations. Assign each voice to independent MIDI channels to play an ensemble with one m!lTone unit. Chain up many m!lTones to take your musical creativity to another level!

Continuous air mode resembles the instrument the "Theremin". Choose from several popular wavetypes such as: Sine, Triangle Square, and Saw to change your sound.

Weighted air mode is a mix of the continuous and discrete modes. Weighted hands-free mode nicely pitch bends the notes in between a scale to the next note in the scale. This mode also allows one to perform a "divebomb" effect. Explore the hundreds of scales that are available to experience the weighted Air mode."

Hidden Voices on the Breakaway Music Vocalizer 1000 Synthesizer Demo

Published on Aug 30, 2014 oberek92

This track appears to have been made on the Breakaway Music Vocalizer 1000 using some of it's hidden voices. According to LucyTuning:

"The Breakaway Vocalizer 1000 is a MIDI pitch-tracker, and sample player, which I had used for analysing dolphin vocalisations. Unfortunately it seems to have been marketed as a toy for karaoke fans. It is claimed to track and playback to the nearest 32nd of a semitone, and although it is now old technology, I find it fun, so here is what I have discovered about its hidden voices. (certainly not General Midi).

GM (program numbers) and sounds

Check it with your sequencer. These program numbers work with Music-X on Amiga (my old favourite) yet some sequencers may transpose the program numbers by one position: so that Piano is 0 and Rap Drum is 73 etc.

"This Arp Omni-2 is in fully working condition. It was recently serviced by The Analog Lab in NYC. It is in fair cosmetic shape considering its 30+ years of age. There are a number of scuffs and nicks and some minor rust. The slider pot for PEDAL & ACC has broken off (see photos). The slider is functional and can be moved with pliers etc. There is a cracked white key on the keyboard that has been glued back together. Two screws are missing from the front panel. @noyzelab's CELLDYNA Featuring Comdyna Analog Hybrid Computer & Cellular Automata Sequencer

via noyzelab where you'll find additional info & pics.

Update: All the sounds you hear except for the drum sounds in the end come from the comdyna - all analogue computer sound synthesis.

"For CELLDYNA I used minimal analogue computing elements (2 to 4 integrators, 2 potentiometers and an inverter) hybridized with a digital Cellular Automata sequencer driving various different synths. The spoken word samples are from a 1969 lecture from EAI titled 'Understanding the Analogue / Hybrid Computer'. In order to use such a small amount of computing elements I setup a fairly messy chaotic style feedback patch. I did this intuitively pluging around to see what happens on the scope while listening to the output in realtime. This approach worked well for this track, and enabled me to get quick results without resorting to theory. I made a bunch of recordings during Dec 2008 & Jan 2009, which I then edited into the final track."

Note this piece is featured in Dave Noyze Automata 49 which also featured afx dsp box commissioned by Richard James of Aphex Twin.

"Boomstar 3003, me and sons.

The real uncompressed and glorious file for your purest listening pleasure: tinyurl.com/nhmll7r

The short playful dry (as opposed to wet) intro and end segments benefit from one of the 3003 sides offset by an 1/8 note—they have also been EQ'd and compressed in Adobe Audition. The balance is un-effected save for the native DP8 "Delay" and "Proverb" touches.

Sequenced via CV and Gate by my Arturia Beatstep (Thanks Sean!) and Carlo and Salvatore St. Regis. Carlo and I manned the 3003, while Salvi kept his fantastically flexible fingers pressed upon the Beatstep's electricity.

Jodorowsky's DUNE Soundtrack Composter Kurt Stenzel Suffer's Stroke

You might remember The Synths of Jodorowsky's Dune. It appears the composer for the film Kurt Stenzel suffered a stroke.  If you'd like to help out, there is a fundraiser page to help him and his family out on GoFundMe here. Please share the link with others.

"On May 16th, Kurt Stenzel – dedicated father, loving partner, generous and loyal friend, artist, musician, and space explorer – suffered a massive stroke to the left side of his brain, paralyzing the right side of his body and greatly limiting his ability to communicate. Since that time, Kurt has been hospitalized and is now working hard in various therapies to begin the long and challenging process of regaining both his mobility and speech. I’m happy to report that he’s making great strides in his recovery, and approaching rehab with his trademark optimism and lust for life."

And via Edward W. Dahl:

"SpacEKrafT co-captain and the composer of the amazing soundtrack for Jodorowsky's DUNE, Kurt Stenzel needs everyones support. Kurt had a pretty serious stroke 3 months ago and is now on the long and arduous journey of rehabilitation. His funding and insurance are depleting or running out and he still needs lots of specialized therapy and rehab to get all the way through this. Please check out the gofundme campaign below and help if you can. All of your shares regarding SpacEKrafT in the past have made such a wonderful impact on the exposure of our music and I really appreciate it. This is even more important.
