Oberheim OB-8 with Polymod Modification

YouTube Uploaded by songofwhales on Aug 11, 2011

via this auction

"It has been modified to include poly modulation, a feature sorely lacking from the OB-8."

PolyMod Info

"All you need to get the desired effect in the OB-8 is an additional signal path from the VCO2 saw to the filter control node. The OB-8, as well as many other synthesizers, has an opamp that provides a virtual GND summing node for adding separate filter control voltages. For a first test, I connected the saw output of VCO2's CEM3340 with this summing node over a resistor in the 100kOhm range..."

MATRIXSYNTH T Sighting

springreverb

YouTube Uploaded by canmarcvancouver on Aug 22, 2011

"We found and dead guitar amp in a field. This one had a spring reverb tank inside. We pulled it out and hooked it up and it sounds awesome. So if you go looking for old junk to make cool sound effects with, an old spring reverb is always a fine choice."

"The synth is an sh101 has the filter closed, 100% keytracking, 100% enveloppe, zero attack, half decay, zero SR. It's a sequence Jesse came up with on the fly so we could test out the reverb.

The signal path is = Sh-101->DI->reverb tank->DI->Focusrite ISA1

We added the DI box (black box in the video) to properly isolate the tank. We used a clean gain stage (focusrite ISA1) because we have it, but it's not necessary. Reverb tanks can be used with super cheap gear and still will be a great effect and there are dead guitar amps everywhere, and they themselves are super clean, but you either need to hit them hard or crank their gain cleanly. Most musicians will hit them with a lot of signal instead and get a lot of signal out them so the high end pre-amp isn't vital. Because they are passive devices you can nail them with a ridiculously loud signal.

This tank also has two small isolation transformers on it, visible in the tank at both ends so we didn't really need our DI box in there. You should always isolate a reverb tank though. Check the tanks you find, they don't always have transformers in them. If not, a stereo DI box is $20, or a pair of audio transformers at the local shop is $5."

Ensoniq SQ80 Synthesizer

via this auction

Posting this one here vs. C for the verbiage from the manual. It's always interesting to see how manufacturers presented their synths.

"Welcome to the ENSONIQ SQ-80, the first studio synthesizer designed 'for live performance. In a world of synthesizers, sequencers, MIDI controllers and MIDI disk drives, the SQ-80 is something different. It is all of those things and more, in one easy-to-use device. Here's what you get:

• An eight-voice, polyphonic, poly-timbral synthesizer, capable of playing eight different sounds at once, with dynamic stereo panning for each voice.
• Voice section employing state-of-the-art CrossWaveTM synthesis techniques; combine different attack and sustain segments to create a rich variety of complex, dynamic sounds.
• 256k bytes of synthetic, sampled and multi-sampled wavedata in ROM — 75 different Waves.
• Dynamic Voice assignment — each Track/MIDI Channel has access to all eight voices.
• An integrated eight-track MIDI sequencer with 20.000 note capacity and features you would expect to find on stand-alone or computer-based Sequencers.
• A full-featured MIDI controller keyboard capable of sending eight MIDI Program and Volume changes at once.
• Key (Poly) Pressure keyboard — Polyphonic Pressure (or After-touch) affects only the note or notes you press down on, allowing a whole new level of expressiveness. Of course, for sending to instruments which only recognize Mono (or "Channel") Pressure, the SQ-80 can send that too.
• A 3.5" disk drive for fast and reliable storage of up to 600 Sequences and up to 1,728 Programs on a single disk.
• Disk storage for all your MIDI devices —the ability to receive and save to disk any System Exclusive message of up to 64k bytes from any device.
• An eighty-character fluorescent Display and user-friendly "Page-driven" programming scheme to help you keep track of it all.
• Stereo Headphone jack for private listening at home or in the studio.
• Program and Sequence formats which are upwardly compatible with the ENSONIQ ESQ-1, so sounds and sequences created for the ESQ-1 can be played on the SQ-80.

Enough with the verbiage from the manual. What you are getting is a working as new Synthesizer! No broken keys. It comes with 1 Voice Crystal #3."

Red C64 Synth MSSIAH SID2SID Commodore Custom 8-bit Synth

via this auction

"Here are some of the features of this custom C64:
-Custom paint job in fire engine red.
-MSSIAH Vinyl Keyboard labels: full digital color prints that show the functions of MSSIAH
-MSSIAH: The MSSIAH is a midi cartride for the Commodore 64. It has a suite of applications that you can use to play the c64 via midi. I controlled mine with Ableton Live 8. Worked like a charm. http://www.8bitventures.com/mssiah/
-SID2SID: An additional circuit board to add a 2nd SID chip. I have two 8580 sid chips installed. They each have a separate 1/4" output. It gives you 6 voices of polyphony/6 tracks in MSSIAH Sequencer and Drummer apps, as well as mirroring the output from your first SID chip to your second SID chip in MONO and Bassline modes, to give you stereo output. http://www.8bitventures.com/sid2sid/
-Video Output Mod: RCA Composite Video Out. Just plug an RCA cord into the screen of your choice, from this output, and you can see the MSSIAH program in action.
-Feedback Mod: 500k pot. Sid input is grounded when it is turned to the left. Turn it to the right to apply feedback. Will make the sounds much filler and grittier.
-2 500K Pots: One controls the feedback, the other can control parameters in the MSSIAH software.
-Filter Input Mod: 1/4" Audio Input to Sid #1 for filtering external sources or samples.
-C64 1351 Mouse: Use it to control MSSIAH.
-Joystick
-Power Supply"

Circular Keyboard

YouTube Uploaded by organfairy on Aug 23, 2011

"A couple of christmases ago I made a decoration that was inspired by J.M.Jarre's circular keyboard from the 1980's. Now it's time to take it one step further.

In this video I make an actual circular keyboard out of it. But I still need to make some kind of electronics for it. But now that I have made the mechanical part I don't believe that the rest will be that difficult.

The music is something I made in the year 2000 and is a Barbie-like take on Ralph Hütter and Florian Schneider's "Europe Endless" originally recorded by Kraftwerk in 1977. The arpeggio is made using a PC programme called SEQ-303. It is basically a 16 step sequencer on a PC with sliders and MIDI control. The rest is played on Yamaha HE-8 organ, Roland SH-2000 synthesizer, and Kawai MS-20 keyboard."

New MATRIXSYNTH.COM Domain Coming - Possible Site Outage

Just a heads up. I'm switching over to matrixsynth.com domains for the site. M will be m.matrixsynth.com, B will be b.matrixsynth.com, C will be c.matrixsynth.com and some of my non synth sites will move over if you track them, WATCHMATRIX for example. Note you shouldn't need to do anything on your end. Blogger will redirect you including all old links you might have. However, there might be a short downtime. Don't panic, the site will be back up soon. I just tested one and there was about a five minute downtime. MATRIXSYNTH will switch over last.

Done at 2:32 PM. Zero downtime.

Update: it looks like the Google Search box on the top right stopped working. I'm guessing the site will need to be re-crawled with the new domain name. We'll see how it goes.

KORG MICRO-PRESET Synthesizer M-500 SP - 1977 | HQ DEMO | Micropreset

YouTube Uploaded by AnalogAudio1 on Jan 14, 2011

"The Korg Micro-Preset model M-500 is a simple monophonic synth with a single oscillator architecture which came out 1977. As a preset synth it's not very flexible - but it has a special, typical sound and some weird fx sounds! Also some good basses. The basic sound is very similar to the Minikorg 700.

The Micro-Preset M-500 has presets like flute, recorder, string, brass, human voice, oboe... and so on. It also has the synth registers SYNTHE 1 and SYNTHE 2 - these are synth voices and they are tweakable with ATTACK, DECAY and filter . There are saw and pulse waveforms, white and pink noise.

Unlike other preset synths the Micro-Preset has no aftertouch - but it has an other great feature: the presets are mixable! You can press more than two presets at once and sometimes you will get interesting results, like heard in the video. A bit like Korg Sigma.

The Korg Micro-Preset you see in the video is a later model. They came in a green/black color scheme and had a built in speaker. They were called M-500 SP.

I played the Micro-Preset with a Yamaha Pro R3 reverb and Roland DEP-5 for delay.

OMD used the Korg Micro-Preset a lot.

I also used it a lot, because it was my very first synth in 1990! Back then I wanted a Korg M1 or a Wavestation, but I could not afford something like that. So I bought the "second hand" monophonic M-500, which I got very cheap from a music store (80 D-Marks, = 40 euros), because nobody wanted it... indeed, they were happy to get rid of it. It was the only one "professional" synth (not a Casio or Yamaha toy), that I could afford - and I was happy!"

EDP Wasp Knobs

via this auction

"This listing is for ONE control knob taken from an Electronic Dream Plant (EDP) Wasp synthesizer. These are original parts but are used.

One problem with the Wasp synth was the tendency for the yellow caps on the knobs to fall off and then become lost. Most Wasps I have seen have one or more missing caps on the control knobs. One thing to note is that the D-shafts of the pots are not all lined up the same on the Wasp, so you may need to remove the cap from these knobs and relocate it so that it points the right way. On some of these knobs it looks like a previous owner (pre-1986!) might have glued the caps down, so you will have to do this with some care.

These control knobs don't come up for sale very often, and it seems to be impossible to get exact copies."
