Chomp - Affordable, Open-Source MIDI Controller

via Chomp on Kickstarter

"Introducing the Chomp: the bite-sized, affordable MIDI box for creative music projects.

It has come to my attention that the world needs an inexpensive (but extraordinarily solid) MIDI controller. That's where the Chomp comes in. With zero technical skills, you can hook up dozens of buttons, knobs, switches, and sensors to control endless parameters of digital software.

The Chomp is the first open-source MIDI controller that's been designed right. Other MIDI controllers on the market are proprietary, difficult to use, non configurable, and most of all: expensive. The only other commercial option available ships exclusively from Europe and costs the US equivalent of $240.

But because it's Arduino powered and completely user programmable, the Chomp is more than an awesome MIDI controller. With new code, Chomp can do just about anything: play Bach on a digital keyboard, or help you along in a live musical performance."

Curious how this compares to Division 6's MIDIfy.

Update via Scott of Division 6: "This appears to be the sort of the opposite of Midify. Chomp takes signals from controllers and converts them to MIDI. Midify takes MIDI data and converts it to signals which can be used to control things. The Midify board is actually capable of sending MIDI data like Chomp, but I never released the code for it. Looks like a neat project!"

Logan String Melody II classic analogue paraphonic string synth

via this auction

"This is a true analogue classic: a paraphonic ensemble / string synthesiser with an incredibly lush, warm, rich sound. It's graced a thousand hits and inspired a load of in-the-box computer emulations, but none of them can come close to the real thing. The String Melody 2 offers a split keyboard, with "bass" tones in the left and "treble" in the right. Each has their own set of sliders to control the mix of analogue waveforms that make up the sound. The "Cello", "Viola" and "Violin" tones are actually all the same sound, but transposed up an octave in each case; by mixing these, you can rapidly create very thick ensemble pad sounds which can then be further tweaked with the Attack and Sustain sliders (Sustain here effectively means Release – it controls how long the sound takes to decay to silence after you let go of the keys).

Adding to the three basic tones are Bass and Percussion, both of which are monophonic with lowest-note priority. They operate to the left of the split point only, and can add real weight and extra warmth to low tones and bass parts. Dialing in analogue pads, string ensembles, rich textures and soundscapes, or string leads is an absolute synch.

The String Melody II adds to the basic controls with a set of five "preset" buttons which are actually way more versatile than mere presets. These alter the analogue waveforms used to create the sound, the chorus effect, and the amount of vibrato applied; so that a slider setup will sound totally different depending on whether you have "Organ" engaged or "Orchestra". These buttons offer starting-points from which you can then sculpt the sound to taste, and really add to the versatility of the instrument.

The waterfall keyboard is four octaves of real quality: it's a delight to play – a real player's machine! It comes in its own Tolex case to protect it, and is mains wired for the UK."

"Ra Ra Riot visited the Moog Sound Lab to re-create the song "Oh La" from their debut LP "The Rhumb Line". Here's a rundown of what they used...
Wes Miles sings through an Analog Delay Moogerfooger on a short time setting for slap-back and plays the bass part on a Little Phatty.
Milo Bonacci (guitar) plays a Moog Guitar with long sustaining single notes running through an Analog Delay Moogerfooger and uses the Moog Guitars' internal ladder filter.
Both Rebecca Zeller (violin) and Alexandra Lawn (cello) play polyphonic pads with Moog's iPad app Animoog, controlling it with a Voyager XL and a Voyager Select Series.
Mathieu Santos (bass) fills in the gaps with a Moog Guitar through Moogerfooger 12-Stage Phaser and Analog Delay with a muted staccato attack.
Kenny Bernard (drums) plays 3 Voyager Rack Mounts, using the Trap-Kat to control them.

MOOG SOUND LAB Season 2: Megafaun - Hope You Know

YouTube Re-Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Mar 7, 2012

"Megafaun Came By The Moog Sound Lab To Perform a Mooged-Out Version of "Hope You Know" From Their Self-Titled LP."

"Shortly after Moogfest 2011, Durham, North Carolina based Megafaun came to the Moog Sound Lab to perform "Hope You Know" off their 2011 self-titled LP.

Brothers Brad and Phil Cook swapped their usual roles with Phil laying down vocals and playing strings while Brad took over for Phil playing keys.

Phil Cook takes full advantage of the Full Sustain mode on the Moog lap steel allowing him, with minimal plucking, to create a haunting sonic landscape.

Brad Cook masterfully uses a Minimoog Voyager to MIDI control Moog's iPad based synthesizer Animoog, enabling him to play polyphonically as he weaves rich melodic chords throughout the song.

Nick Sanborn uses the Little Phatty to provide the song's bass line, filling and enriching the sound with the MF-104Z Analog Delay.

Joe Westerlund uses a Trap-Kat drum pad run through a MF-104Z Analog Delay to MIDI control three Rack Mount Voyagers configured to create ghostly percussive sounds.

MOOG SOUND LAB Season 2: Megafaun - State/Meant

"Durham, North Carolina based Megafaun came into the Moog factory shortly after Moogfest 2011 to re-imagine "State/Ment" off their 2011 self titled album Megafaun. Here's the gear they used for their Sound Lab experiment:

Brad Cook (guitars) provides vocals for the song whileplaying Moog Guitar in full sustain mode.

Brad's brother Phil Cook (keys) uses a Minimoog Voyager to MIDI control Moog's iPad app Animoog.

New addition to the band, bass player Nick Sanborn, uses the Little Phatty run through a MF-105M MIDI MuRF and a MF-104Z Analog Delay to create the song's prevailing rhythmic pattern.

Drummer Joe Westerlund uses three Voyager Rack Mounts controlled via the Trap-Kat to create the backing percussion in this song.

MOOG SOUND LAB Season 2: Little Dragon - Summertearz

"Little Dragon visited the Moog Sound Lab to perform the song "Summertearz" from their LP Ritual Union.

Little Dragon came in for a session during Moogfest 2011. Sadly, their bass player fell ill during the festival and they were unable to perform their full set that evening. Luckily, their soundman filled in on bass parts with the Little Phatty for the Moog Sound Lab session and we got a gem of a performance.

Little Dragon front-woman Yukimi Nagano sings through an Analog Delay Moogerfooger, adding warmth and a low-fi slap-back to her sultry voice.

Keyboardist Hakan Wirenstrand masterfully plays the Minimoog Voyager XL. Check out his solo at 4:10. Using an Analog Delay Moogerfooger, he doubles the sound of the XL to make a rhythmic doubling effect, as he opens and closes the 2 Moog Ladder filters with the cutoff knob.

Little Dragon's sound man, Crispin Anderson sat in for bassist Fredrick Kallgren for this session. He holds down the song with thick bass lines on the Little Phatty

Drummer Eric Bodin plays a driving beat with 3 Minimoog Voyager Rack Mounts using Trap-Kat drum pads to control each Voyager separately

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Feb 2, 2012

"Brooklyn-based band, The Antlers were among the groups who came in for a Moog Sound Lab session during Moogfest 2011. They performed with an array of Moog instruments and changed the shape of their song, "Parentheses".

Antlers front man Peter Silberman sings through an Analog Delay to accentuate his ethereal falsettovoice while switching between the Moog Guitar through an Analog Delay, Ring Modulator, and 12-Stage Phaser for sparse dub-like echoes and Minimoog Voyager Old School for melodica-like lines.

Darby Cicci takes the helm of the Minimoog Voyager XL, patching in experimental sounds and sweeping the filters while singing through a FreqBox and a Cluster Flux. The FreqBox gives him a distorted oscillator-synced fuzz tone and the Cluster Flux is used for vibrato. Darby also plays a lead line on the new Moog iPad app Animoog, arppeggiating notes up and down.

Michael Lerner uses 3 Minimoog Voyager Rack Mount Editions to create a dark electronic drum kit. He plays the Trap-Kat to trigger each sound.

Timothy Mislock uses a Moog Guitar with a Cluster Flux and Analog Delay while moving the tremolo arm back and forth for detuned string pads. He also plays the Taurus 3 Bass Pedals with his feet for the bass lines.

Twin Shadow AKA George Lewis Jr. deftly plays the Moog Guitar, utilizing the patented sustaining power to float cascading melodic lines across the soundscape. Lewis' guitar and vocals are running through the Analog Delay Moogerfooger.

Keyboardist Wynne Bennett uses the Little Phatty to lay down a fat rumbling bass line throughout the song with her left hand. With her right hand she plays a Minimoog Voyager XL, which is MIDI controlling Moog's new synthesizer iPad app, Animoog enabling her to play polyphonically.

Bass player Russell Manning plays the Moog Guitar, using the control pedal to sweep the cutoff of the guitar's internal ladder filter, to create a wah-like effect that adds a funky dub feel interwoven with the percussion.

Michael Hutcherson plays a Minimoog Old School Voyager, layering haunting soundscapes and filter sweeps throughout the song.
