Something New From Clavia / Nord Keyboards Coming to Musikmesse

via Nord Keyboards: "Wednesday March 21th at 10.00am the 2012 Musikmesse opens in Frankfurt! The Nord Crew will be there and as always there will be something new to try out..."

Click the pic and look at the red box he's resting his hand on. My first thought was the new nord drum presented at NAMM 2012, but if you look at the back of it in this post, you'll see it's fully black. This one is red. Along with the new nord drum at NAMM, Clavia showed the new Nord Piano 2, and C2D Combo Organ, none of which this appears to be. So, a small red box. My dream? A new affordable fully polyphonic micro-modular with iPad editor for performance editing and software editor for PC/Mac/Linux. They could repackage the DSP in the G2 rack with the existing engine and put resources into the editor. I can always dream...

Update: Consensus in the comments is that it's actually the wood side panel of a keyboard standing on it's side. It's painted red like other Clavia keyboards. Note none of the Lead and Wave line of synths from Clavia have had wood end caps, so if this is a new synth, it would be a departure from that.

Update: Looks like it will be the Electro 4D. You can find the announcement here.

Ensoniq ESQ-1 is a hybrid digital-analog synthesizer released by Ensoniq in 1986. The ESQ-1 featured 8 voices with 3 digital oscillators per voice. Each oscillator could be set to one of 32 different waveforms. Some of these were standard simple waveforms such as sawtooth and pulse, while others were samples such as piano and voice. Each oscillator also had an associated DCA (not VCA) to control its volume in 256 steps. In addition to that, an ESQ1's voice featured 3 LFOs, 4 envelope generators, a 4-pole resonant analog lowpass filter (VCF), and a final VCA with left/right panning. It also sported a 61-key velocity-sensitive keyboard, full MIDI implementation, memory for 40 patches, a memory cartridge slot, and an 8-track sequencer. A rackmount version called the ESQ-M was also released circa 1987, with exactly the same specification minus the sequencer. The ESQ-1 was produced until 1988."

VERMONA DRM1 MKIII ANALOG DRUM SYNTHESIZER SN D 07063

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

"The DRM1 MKIII is an eight-channel, completely analog drum synthesizer. It gives you total control over every parameter through its 72 controls.

The new version has following changes:
- KICK channel instead of the DRUM1 channel. The Kick channel has some different parameters and can create fatter and deeper kick sounds.
- The DRUM channels have a WAVE parameter which transforms the oscillator's waveform from sine to square
- The oscillators of the DRUM channels will be started with each trig signal.

The DRM1 Mk III is a flexible 8-channel drum synthesizer, which gives you the ability to create your own sounds, as well as many other classic analog drum sounds. Every sound parameter of the DRM1 Mk III has its own controller, so its easy to use and you'll always have a clear picture of the settings.

Note is is a full single voice engine of the G2 modular system and is a great way to take a look at modular system on your PC or Mac [PowerPC only :( ] for free. BTW, if you are on Facebook and not a member of The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge, you might want to join. Not everything gets posted here.

8159R Sequencer / Rhythm Generator, homemade vintage junk synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
"Are you bored of the monotonous sound of every day life? Do you have a lack of bleepy weird sounds? Are you longing for the rhythmic trotting of robotic communications from beyond our solar system? Then this is the device for you!

Green Dungeon Alchemist Laboratories 8159R RHYTHM-O-TRON

Built from the finest found junk and stuff, this device utilizes the earliest in logic technologies to create rhythmic sequences of bleeps and wails unlike anything heard before! (unless you had an old 300 baud modem) It generates a constantly changing rhythm controlled by four binary inputs, each connected to one of 12 tempo division outputs via bolts. The connection leads are constructed from modified spent bullet casings and the finest quality bits of wire found in the lab. The sound being rhythmized is generated by 3 oscillators with frequency control (marked A, B and C). Combined via a method of ring modulation they provide us with interstellar cosmic sounds and roboitc cybercommunication noises equating to a funky beat to do the robot to! This device also has the capacity to raise the tempo frequency beyond sub-audible normal operation to provide truly unusual electronic buzzing.

An instructional image is provided below along with photographs and sound samples.

DARK ENERGY II Initial Specs Released

follow-up to this post.

via Doepfer:

"preliminary without obligation

The Dark Energy (I) has to be discontinued because an important electronic part (CEM3394) is no longer available. We are working on the redesign of the Dark Energy at full speed. The new Dark Energy II will look like the Dark Energy I at first sight. Only the function of some controls and switches will differ from the Dark Energy I. These are the most important differences between Dark Energy I and II:

12dB multimode filter with lowpass, notch, highpass and bandpass (instead of 24dB lowpass of Dark Energy I)
the previous LM control of the filter becomes the filter type control (continuous crossfade lowpass - notch highpass - bandpass)
the LM function of the filter is no longer available
the waveform switch is used to select between saw and clipped/distorted saw (in the center position the saw is off)
the basic waveform of the VCO is saw (not triangle like the Dark Energy I).
because of the pure analog circuit and the temperature control it takes about 30 minutes until the VCO is in tune.
the VCA has a exponential scale (not the combined linear/exponential scale of Dark Energy I)

All other functions will remain unchanged. Even the price will be the same (currently Euro 428). The Dark Energy II will be probably available summer 2012."

The Paradiso Synthesizer

YouTube Uploaded by MITNewsOffice on Mar 13, 2012

Be sure to see the Paradiso label at the bottom of this post for prior posts.

"In 1973, Media Lab associate professor Joe Paradiso was an undergraduate at Tufts University, and didn't know anyone who had built an analog music synthesizer, or "synth," from scratch.

It was a time, he says, when information and parts for do-it-yourself projects were scarce, and digital synthesizer production was on the rise. But, he decided to tackle the project — without any formal training — and sought out advice from local college professors, including his now-colleague in the Media Lab, Barry Vercoe. Paradiso gathered information from manufacturers' data sheets and hobbyist magazines he found in public libraries. He taught himself basic electronics, scrounged for parts from surplus stores and spent a decade and a half building modules and hacking consumer keyboards to create the synth, which he completed in the 1980s.

That synthesizer, probably the world's largest with more than 125 modules (http://web.media.mit.edu/~joep/modlist.html), is now on display in the MIT Museum.

Every few weeks, Paradiso changes the complex configurations of wires connecting the synthesizer's modules, called "patches," to create a new sonic environment. The synthesizer streams live online 24 hours a day at http://synth.media.mit.edu; starting this week, visitors to the synthesizer's website can even change the patch parameters online.

Learn more about Paradiso's synthesizer! http://web.media.mit.edu/~joep/synth.html"
