"Morton Subotnick could fairly be called electronic music's first hitmaker. His 1967 album Silver Apples of the Moon was an international sensation. Or, in his words, 'It was like a bombshell.'

Silver Apples was the first piece of electronic music commissioned by a record label and was created on the first synthesizer small enough to sit on a table [the Buchla 100]. Subotnick's Greenwich Village workspace became a drop-in spot for musicians from The Mothers of Invention to The Grateful Dead to The Velvet Underground. One night, unfamiliar visitors arrived..."

MPC Electronics MPC-1 Vintage Analog Drum Machine Demo w MIDI2SDS MIDI Retrofit [mpc1]

"This is an extraordinarily rare MPC Electronics MPC-1 analog drum machine. It is the only vintage analog drum machine I am aware of that is velocity sensitive. The velocity sensitivity is particularly interesting when applied to the toms as it gradually mixes in "skin resonance" which, to me, sounds like a filtered noise source.

The sequencer only records a couple of the drum tones and is thus not useful. I installed the MIDI2SDS retrofit kit from Elby Designs to make it more usable. Unfortunately there are about 10 sounds on the MPC and only 8 triggers on the kit. In this video the Cymbal and Tom 2 are not triggered.

I chose the MIDI2SDS kit because it transmits velocity data (not demoed in this video). I installed it to receive Midi through the Sync In input so that the retrofit is fully reversible.

The primary purpose of this video is to demonstrate the basic functionality of this unit. It is not to demonstrate my (non-existant) beat making genius, so do not expect a rockin jam.

The audio was recorded directly into an Emu 1616m interface.

"Live played Moog LP bass wobbles featuring the awesome MIDIbox MB6582 for layered SID arpeggios :-).
Only very few tracks had been prerecorded on the sequencer, the rest is improvised and performed live - please forgive my not 100% perfect timing!

Video footage filmed on the northwestern end of Fuerteventura, with a FPV Y6 MWC :-).

Synths used:

Moog LP for wobbling bass (live played on upper keyboard) filtered by Polivox VCF
8x 8580 SIDs for layered arpeggios (prerecorded)
Roland V-Synth for lead (prerecorded)
Access Virus C for lead (live played on lower keyboard)
Elektron Machinedrum for 28/32 step percussion (prerecorded and experimental, am unsure, tell me what you think! :-)).

Noise in KORG Volca Keys Delay Circuit

Audio Cookbook has a post up on the KORG Volca Keys Delay Circuit and noticeable noise introduced by the circuit. You'll find demos and additional details in the full post. Pic of the Volca Keys signal flow diagram below.

"To illustrate the noise introduced by the delay circuit I created a few versions of a simple test sequence. One without delay, one with the internal delay, one with Ableton’s Simple Delay, and finally one with my Electro-harmonix Memory Man Delay. The sequence sounds pretty clean on its own, but buzzy, high frequency aliasing becomes audible when the Volca’s delay is introduced. In comparison, Ableton’s Simple Delay doesn’t add any noticeable noise, while the Memory Man adds a little noise (and pleasant chorusing), but nowhere near as much as the Volca delay."

"I had a little idea; back in the days people used the second track on a tape-recorder to record some pulses on to which a slide projector could be synchronized ( http://patentimages.storage.googleapi... ). I thought I could use something similar to synchronize samples recorded to tape to do some analog sampling. Every pulse signals the end of a sample (and the beginning of another) and shuts the motor down, an external pulse then starts the motor again on the next beat.

I tried it and it works! I just wanted to show here how the simple sample on the looped tape (on the right) gets synchronized to the sequence on my doepfer. I got carried away though and couldn't keep myself from using two other machines (the reversing tape-machine and the pitching cassette) and eventually it turned out sounding like some kind of weird pulsating scapish thing, I guess I've been listening to Dreamies and Silver Apples a lot lately :)"

Hello ! My name is Frederic Gerchambeau. I have made this movie and this music. The music has been made using a parper circuit and a Doepfer analog modular system.

The paper circuit has four outputs. One leads to the cutoff frequency of lowpass filter 1, another leads to the cutoff frequency of lowpass filter 2, a third one leads to the pitch CV control oscillator 1 and a fourth one leads to the pitch CV control oscillator 2. So, with a wire coming from a Doepfer A-183-2 offset, i can control these four parameters depending where the wire is on the paper circuit. The echo effect comes from a Make Noise Echophon. Enjoy !"
