CatSynth at Zuccotti Park

"This is of course coming a little less than a week after the major raid on Zuccotti Park, so things were a bit sparse, indeed less active than some of the events I have attended in San Francisco. The ban on tents was in full force, with not a single tent in sight. I had also heard about a ban on musical instruments. So here I am playing the Smule Magic Piano on the iPhone in defiance."
Side note: this is post #16918 on MATRIXSYNTH for the year and breaks the record number of posts in a given year. I made a point not to save any particular post for the record. I wanted to see what came in by chance. I couldn't have thought of a more fitting and interesting post. I wondered what the first OWS post might be. This is it. Two firsts in one post. Go CatSynth! :) (see CatSynth for the full post)
Feel free to send any synth related OWS content in for a post to matrixsynth@gmail.com

"In this video I tried to make the live remix for the great song "Iklamin" of my friend Michael Emelyanov and his band Neonim. The device used in the video is my Elektron Octatrack DPS-1, 8 tracks performance sampler - very cool thing to make the remix with!"
Side note: this is post 16917 for the year and ties the record for last year. Next post breaks it.

"When used with a sequencer, this unit and it's siblings (K2600, K2661, K2000, etc,) cannot be beat. On top of that they have the V.A.S.T. engine which means the voice engine is like a modular synthesizer and the voice path can have extremely sophisticated and complex routings unlike everything else out there which still tend to have very simple synth engines. In other words, you can get very complex sounds out these units..."

"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video
(1992)
In this piece Charle's Buchla synthesizers were directly controlling various video devices, shaping and patterning video feedback images and fading visual elements in and out of the scene. 12-10-92 was created in real time on at the Experimental Television Center during a residency in 1992."
Dancing Calligraphy by The Luminists
"The Luminists
Charles Cohen - audio
Eric Schefter - video
(1992)
Dancing Calligraphy was created at ETC in Jan. 1992, and edited later that year. In this piece we slowly strip away the layers of processing to reveal the source feedback that forms the basic ground from which the imagery arises.
In Dancing Calligraphy, the imagery was created utilizing control voltages from Charles' analog Buchla Synth controlling the Paik Raster Control Unit, the Jones Colorizer, and Jones Sequencer. We also used MidiMice and Buchla's Thunder midi controller to trigger DPaint4. The DPaint4 image cut a key in the video, revealing the many layers of processing that make up the final image."

"The Luminists

Eric Schefter - video
(1994)
FLASHER 003 is an ETC studio version of one of our live pieces. The piece offers impressions of a relationship in the process of disintegration. In it Charles triggers still frames of two bodies which are then weaved together (but not quite) through rapid fire live switching and ”editing”. The rhythm is determined through midi coming from Charles’ controller."

Raglani. Evolution Of A Patch. My new MX6 configuration.
"Major downsizing. From three cases, a boat and two beauty cases to one case and one boat. My first patch on my new Monorocket MX6. Started out with an EMS Synthi type patch, utilizing only the Analogue Systems Modules. Then added some panning, then some simple Makenoise Rene sequencing. And finally another Sequencer clocked at a different rate hitting the same Oscillator as the Rene. Lots of quantized filters and low pass gates. 4MS RCD mixing up events and gates."

YouTube Uploaded by sduck409 on Nov 21, 2011
"A brief demo of some of the capabilities of my SCMRCD module - a combination of the Shuffling Clock Multiplier, the Rotating Clock Divider and their associated breakout boards from 4ms Pedals. I don't really scratch the surface of what this thing can do, just using the built in clock generator and the knobs and switches - no outboard cv's or anything. Still you can get an idea of the potential, and enjoy a light show at the same time."

Update: YouTube description added: "Using the sequencer of the Serge and three oscillators to create some chords and a nice little progression. There is some random triggering of the oscillators so it shouldn't sound so boring all the time. At the end is a little tweaking by me which shows a little more of how the patch works.

The Tetrafol

"Los Angeles musical group Fol Chen has created a strange new instrument that lets listeners re-create the band’s unique sound.
The device, called a Tetrafol, is a wooden tetrahedron that can manipulate sound. Its guts sense orientation and motion and use those movements to modify the playback of sounds. Each device comes loaded with mini-compositions created by Fol Chen, but users of the Tetrafol can also upload their own sounds to manipulate..."

Polytonal Piece [SIMMONS Silicon Mallet Piece]
YouTube Uploaded by garyfieldman on Nov 21, 2011
"Interesting green sparkles of light projected onto the side walk from the store "Faces", in Northampton Ma. The music is "Polytonal Piece", an assignment for a New England Conservatory class taught by Hankus Netsky, around 1995. The influence is definitely in part from Miles Davis, from "In A Silent Way", and that electric modal period.
Synesthesia: Not the colors, but the texture of the bouncing balls of light go together with the music relative to my synesthetic sense.
Performed on the Simons Silicon Mallet."

Season Two marks a partnership with music tastemaker, SPIN.com. SPIN will exclusively present one performance from each session.
Moog Sound Lab Season Two’s debut episode features a distinctive performance by Twin Shadow, who applies synthesis to organically re-invent his breakthrough songs “Castles In The Snow” and “Slow”. The on-line series is creatively engineered and filmed at Moog Music's factory in Asheville, North Carolina by Moog’s in-house multi-media production team.
Little Dragon, The Antlers, Ra Ra Riot, and Megafaun join Twin Shadow for the second season of Moog Sound Lab. Each band re-imagined two of their songs while experimenting in Moog's gear rich, black box studio space within its working factory. Triadex Muse Vintage Synthesizer / Sequencer
via this auction via analogsd
"This very unique machine is regarded by some as the first digital musical instrument. Designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky at MIT, the Muse is an algorithmic music generator: it uses digital logic circuits to produce a sequence of notes based on the settings of various parameters.
Since the Muse was designed as a composition tool, not a synthesizer, there is no control over the timbre of the sound; rather, the front panel controls affect the melodies that are generated.
The four small sliders in the lower-left control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. The switches to either side are used to start and stop the sequence, or to step through it note-by-note.
Of the eight larger sliders on the right, four control the musical intervals used (labeled A, B, C, and D), and four control the theme (labeled W, X, Y, and Z). A rest can be substituted for the lowest note by flipping a toggle switch. The exact logic behind the composition engine is rather technical, and not exactly intuitive.
The tempo clock can be slaved to that of another Muse, allowing for multi-part compositions.
It is not known exactly how many Muses were made, but they are very rare, and were not available in stores."

Yamaha CS30 Analogue Synthesizer

"The CS-30 is a large, knob infested, analog synthesizer with masses of features. It is a monophonic synth with two oscillators with separate outputs, two multimode resonant filters, two VCA amplifiers and three envelopes. It also features a ring modulator, external audio triggering and an excellent 8-step sequencer.
This machine is a sound designers dream."
