"Our twenty-eighth winner of the Modular Pic of the Week contest goes to Edmund Klaus (photo credit ChinasArt Photography), for this untitled photo.
Edmund Klaus (Monobot) is a producer/composer from Karlsruhe, Germany. Monobot experiments with, and modifies synthesizers, modulars, sequencers, and software in search of the perfect live setup. The goal is to sequence and create music completely live with sound generated mostly through analog gear. This suitcase is part of the concept.
Check out Monobot's music on his Soundcloud page: http://soundcloud.com/monobot
We'd like to give a big thanks and congratulations to Edmund Klaus and ChinasArt Photography for their submission!
This is the 28th week of a 30-week contest. For details on how to submit and what you can win, see this post.
For more info on the upcoming 'I Dream of Wires' documentary, be sure to see the trailer and IndieGoGo fund raising campaign here.

Home made analogue mono-synth from R.A.Penfold Book

"Here for sale is a home made analogue mono-synth constructed from a book by R.A.Penfold called "Electronic Synthesiser Construction"... Link to the book is here [on Amazon]
The synthesiser was built by me in the early nineties and then forgotten about in a cupboard for many years, now during a studio clear out it's resurfaced and I thought it should get some use somewhere else in the world! :-)
The synth concept follows the classic layout of a single VCO with Square / Tri / Pulse waveforms, Mixer, multimode resonant 12db/oct VCF and finally VCA. There is also an LFO and ENV generator for modulation of the VCO, VCF and VCA..
The connections round the back are CV, Gate In, Audio In (routed to mixer and then on to the VCF) and the main Audio Out - all are on 1/4inch jack sockets.
It sounded great back in the day but now it has some faults so I'm listing it as For Parts Or Not Working.
I've tested it and established the following issues.
LFO is not working,
VCO tuning is prone to wander around,
Mutimode VCF seems to sometimes function as a lowpass and then wanders into bandpass mode,
VCF resonance control is dodgy.
VCF is easily over-driven by the levels in the mixer - perhaps this VCF behaviour is not exactly a fault but I thought it was a tad harsh but maybe that's just me..."

"Demo of a home-brew synth I built in the nineties from the excellent R.A.Penfold book "Electronic Synthesiser Construction".
It's a single VCO affair with an OTA based 12db/oct state variable VCF.
The sequence is from a x0xb0x controlling the synth over CV/Gate.
I'm selling it on eBay and the video has been posted to highlight a number of faults the synth has like the fact the LFO no longer functions, the tuning wanders and some of the controls are a bit flaky. Will prob leave it up on youTube after the auction for historical interest."

Synare 2 Analog Percussion Synthesizer

YouTube Published on May 6, 2012 by moogplayer
"Selling this rare gem on eBay. This model was manufactured from 1976 to 1982 and was Star's flagship model. This was very much like the Synare 1, with one oscillator with sawtooth, and pulse waveforms, white noise generator, etc. But this had assignable functions, ie. routing the LFO to control certain parameters at once. The LFO also added a sawtooth waveform You could also select a wide range of octaves for the pitch to sound at, along with a fine tune function. A major adjustment was the introduction of a fairly advanced sequencer with different patters, and the ability to change patterns and octaves. You could also adjust the speed and the note(s) sounded by the sequencer. This model features 16 pads instead of the previous four. Retail price in 1976 was $1,395.00. This high price has made the Synare 2 very rare. According to one of Star's founders, about 50-75 of these units were built."

Maximum Minimal Drone
YouTube Published on May 5, 2012 by mike19822058
"http://www.handmadeelectronicinstruments.com/
Housed in a very rugged and well used slide case, this synthesizer is capable of extremely dense sounds. The controls can be broken down into two sections, the drone and the auto-step synthesizer. Each section has it's own filter, volume control, and on/off toggle to blend the sounds. There is really nice cross-talk, especially in the way the auto-step will warp the drone section.
Above, the drone section consists of two oscillators that modulate each other while a third selectable LFO adds more interesting rhythmic sounds. This creates a nice thick bed.
Below, the auto-step section is based on a stepped-tone generator but with a sweeping LFO, giving it an almost automated looping effect. This is controlled with speed, frequency, and pulse length. With a 1/4" output jack it is easy to connect to amps, effects or recording equipment. It is powered by an included 9volt battery or any 9volt center-negative DC adapter. This was designed and hand-built in Oakland, California."
