xpander- Impro

Heavy bass to start. Watch your volume levels if you do turn it up as there are bursts of noise.

via fedaden: "here is a rather noisy and abstract impro made with my oberheim Xpander which i recently repaired thanks to ear from the excelent http://forum.anafrog.com ( french only ) forum..

just a few edits to cut a few dull parts, reverb provided by the cheap but charming midiverb 2..
sometimes the 20 modulations limit is a bit annoying but for a synth from 1984 it's quite okay i guess.."  No other audio processing.

1980's AKAI AX80 SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This synthesizer is in excellent working condition, and has just been serviced. Brand-new back-up battery has been installed, with factory patches loaded and ready to play. All keys, velocity sensitivity, 8 voices, membrane buttons, VFD screens, alpha-numeric displays, potentiometers, pitch/mod wheels, ins/outs, midi, tape, and chord functions are working great as they should. Cosmetically, this synth is in good condition, with some scuffs/scratches/a few slight indents to the top of the metal case, as well as some chipping on the corners of the side panels to mention (see pics). The AX80 has 8x CEM3372 voice/filter IC's for beautifully lush analog patches, as well as tight-punch, perfect for bass patches. This was AKAI's answer to Oberheim's MATRIX series, and shares many tonal qualities to those synths. Don't pass this one up!!"

ARP 2600

via this auction

"Just in time for the holidays…the one, the only ARP 2600 Synthesizer! You know what this puppy is, what it can do and which Who track it was used on so I’m not going to add anything new here. What I will say is the unit is in excellent condition. It was refurbished and calibrated by Phil Cirroco in 2008: 1 PS ripple: rebuild power supply - hacked badly; 1 VCA is hacked - install 4019 replica; 1 sh is hacked - install a 4015; 1 all board missing mounts - install mounts; 1 bogus APU - install CMS APU: extra work involved; all scratchy sliders - lube; 1 sine wave bad - repair converter; 1 adsr to filter - bad jack - replace; 2 speakers clipping - repair power amps; 6 missing panel washers - replace fiber washers; 24 all PS bypass caps missing - replace; 1 clean FP, inside, lid; 1 calibrate. His rebuild took some 6 months. Part of that, of course, is he’s a pretty sought after tech. But as a note of caution to all you collectors out there, the previous owner of this synth (or maybe someone before her) really screwed up trying to fix the power supply and other modules along with doing a miserable job of doing the audio upgrades. If you want a 2600 on the cheap just be sure you ask the right questions..."

EMU Emulator III

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Note this one is for sale from Malekko on eBay.

"Up for sale is one of the best samplers ever made (if not THE best!!) The EMU EIII was an extremely full featured sampler with Curtis analog filters to make it over the top awesome!!

This rare rack version works perfectly (all voices are perfect) has maxed (8mb) RAM, has HD with sounds OR i can replace it with a CF HD (1GB) with OS (no patches) for 100.00 more after the sale. The following text is take from emulator archive:

Three years after the launch of the legendary EII, Emu Systems began work on a new mega sampler - the Emulator III. Released in 1988, the Digital Sound Production System was a major leap forward in sampling technology. CD quality at 16 bits (oversampled), 16 separate voices, huge RAM, an internal hard drive, external SCSI and a brand new operating system. The engineering quality and the sound were (and still are!) awesome.

CD Revolution
The Emulator III not only matched CD quality with 16 bits, but harnessed the CD revolution by using the new CDROM players to load sample libraries. This provided the EIII with a massive library of high quality sounds, which could be rapidly and easily accessed. The EIII took centre stage in studios and post production suites across the world.

The F Chip
The Emulator III kept with the overall Emulator II design, but with a faster main processor and a revolutionary Digital Oversampling Filter chip - custom built by Emu Systems. This was the start of a long line of custom chips which have been at the core of E-mu Systems sample designs ever since. The F chip ensured a pristine quality of sound output - and a 96dB signal to noise ratio. The EIII is much quieter and free from any digital artefacts - unlike the EII.

Workstation
The Emulator III Keyboard version has a 5 octave keyboard with aftertouch and velocity. It came with a 16 track sequencer and full SMPTE/MIDI sync. Rather surprisingly the EIII only has unbalanced outputs, but it does have a 25 pin SCSI connector and 16 individual voice outputs.

The Mystery Emulator III
The EIII rack was announced at the same time as the EIII keyboard was launched, and it appeared in the marketing material. EIII racks were available from May 1988, however they seem to have been in limited supply, and only a few were actually sold. They are hard to find second-hand, and therefore command higher prices.

Harvestman Double Andore Dual Envelope Generator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Double Andore is a dual A-D envelope generator and 2-channel VCA with digital curve shaping and VCA law selection. It can function as your synthesizer’s keystone and its meridian.

The Double Andore features a symmetrical control layout with two identical sides. The top section of each half is an A-D envelope generator. A trigger input is provided, along with "freeze" and "mirror" gate inputs. The former holds the envelope at its current position, and the latter inverts the position of the envelope within its voltage range. The envelope signal passes through a digital curve shaper whose selected curve is numerically displayed. Normally, each half of the module has its shape selection apply to both the Attack and Delay phases of its envelope, but you can enable an alternate mode where the left and right shape select controls instead select different curves for Attack and Decay. Two banks of envelopes are available.

The envelopes can behave in three ways. AD mode runs through its phase upon receipt of a trigger or gate. AHD mode holds the envelope at its maximum value if there is still a gate present at the end of the Attack phase. LFO mode freely cycles back and forth between Attack and Decay phases with no trigger necessary. All three modes will retrigger to the beginning of the Attack phase if another trigger event is applied. Each envelope features one CV input which can be assigned to any of the following parameters: attack time, decay time, and curve shape. Negative voltages are valid input and will correctly add or subtract from the manual voltage of the assigned parameter(s). Each envelope has three outputs with LED indicators: the 0-8V envelope voltage, and trigger signals that fire at the end of both Attack and Decay phases.

The lower part of each half is a DC-coupled VCA. The envelope output is normalled to the VCA control input, and can be overridden by patching into the CTL jack. The gain law of each VCA is switchable between linear and exponential. The exponential mode can distort if excess audio or control input is given, and its sensitivity can be adjusted by an internal trimmer. By holding down the Law selection button for two seconds, you can enable cross-modulation from the opposite VCA channel.

The center section of the module features mixers for both envelopes and VCAs. The envelope mixer is a maximum circuit that outputs only the highest voltage from the two envelopes, with a balance control to adjust the strength of each input. The VCA mixer simply mixes the output of both amplifiers with no additional controls necessary..."

RUCCI Touch Synthesizer

Published on Nov 30, 2013 Michael Rucci·72 videos

HandmadeElectronicInstruments.com

"This handmade synthesizer is played by bridging the contact points. There are 15 contact points, each of which plays a higher pitch. It is monophonic and will sound the highest pitch being played and 2 effect points.

There is controllable LFO that is activated by pressing the far left contact point and is fed to the square-wave oscillator producing quick modulation, or an almost distorted throaty sound. In addition to LFO speed there is a low pass filter and volume control. Also the far right contact point will create some interesting effects, responding well to light touches that can zap the frequency well out of audible range.

The contact strip is sensitive to pressure and even the resistance of a particular player's skin. For example someone with sweaty hands will produce a higher frequency. Please note with excess sweat on the contact points you will find a slight decay, however it's quirks are easily learned and tamable.

It has a 1/4" output and is powered by an included 9volt battery. The copper finish will have an aged look especially after being played a bit."

Buchla Modular Sounds 21 - 210e Tip

Published on Nov 30, 2013 pjoris2·113 videos

"An example of the 210e used as preset manager for non-e modules.

In this case I have two patches: a slow one and a fast one. In the slow one the envelopes on the 281e are slow and in the fast one, they are more snappy. But I use the Pendulum Ratchet as main clock and want also speed of the Time Machine adjusted etc.

So I take a fixed voltage from the 254v and plug it in the 210e control section and take a CV output of the 210e an patch it to the clock CV input of the Pendulum Ratchet with attenuator fully open (clockwise). The first (Slow) preset now has the input to output connection fully closed; the second (Fast) has it partly open. Two other CV outputs have the opposite (partly open for slow preset, closed for fast preset.

Similar patching was done for the delay time CV input (long in slow preset, short in fast), amount of modulation of delay time (more in slow preset),slew speed on the slew module-module, offset of K4816, waveform of 258v etc."

Synthesizers Documentary by Katey Dawson

Published on Nov 30, 2013 Katey Dawson·1 video

"How has the development of the Synthesizer changed the traditional way of making music?"

Featured: Theremin, Ondes Martenot, Moog, Korg, Roland, Yamaha, Emu, & soft synths.

You can't cover everything in just under 24 minutes of course.  That said, there's no mention of Don Buchla, who gets as much credit as Bob Moog for starting the synthesizer revolution.  Some of the second wave including Arp, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, EML, etc... aren't mentioned.  John Cage gets a mention for his use of raw oscillators, Wendy Carlos for her work on Switched on Bach with the Moog modular. Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, and Tangerine Dream get a mention for the 70s. Zap gets a mention for the use of the vocoder. Jean Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield & Tubular Bells get a mention, but not Kraftwerk (although Autobahn gets a clip). Human League's Don't You Want Me gets credit for the first all sequenced synth track to hit number 1 on the charts. Paul Hardcastle's 19 gets a mention for its use of sampling. No mention of Morton Subotnick, YMO, ELP, Synergy, Isao Tomita, Laurie Spiegel, Suzanne Ciani, musique concrete, etc.  Still pretty cool seeing a documentary on synthesis at a high level like this.

Thanks to everyone for watching Automatic Gainsay, thanks to the companies of yore that made such amazing synths, thanks to Sonic State for getting me started, and thanks to the modern companies that are making new amazing synths.

Special thanks to Korg, Arturia, and Dubreq for letting me demo their great new products.

The music is the theme I created for the Moog Voyager video. It is 100% Moog Voyager except for the drums. So, that's not really 100% Voyager. But it's hard to discern what percentage the drums would be in regard to the entirety of the mix. I'm not very good with mathematics, and I apologize for that."

He is known for his pioneering work in electronic music and particularly music programming, as the assistant of Isao Tomita during the early 1970s and as the "fourth member" of the band Yellow Magic Orchestra during the late 1970s to early 1980s.[1]

Through his participation in the session recording of Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1978 album Thousand Knives, he joined the recordings of Yellow Magic Orchestra during 1978-1982 as their sound programmer, to become known as "the fourth member" of the group. In 1981, he formed a unit of his own under the name Logic System, which released its latest album in 2008. In Memoriam Bernard Parmegiani

Published on Nov 29, 2013 RADIOKLOW·96 videos

"In Memoriam Bernard Parmegiani is a tribute to the french composer who died on the 21th of november 2013, about a week ago. Written ofr Virus TI, it consists in a funeral ritual in seven stations, each one being the enter of a kind of broken mantra which reveals its substance at the end of the composition.
Bernard Parmegiani was the second composer of electroacoustic music I discovered in my youth. At the gage of 15, I read a book by Michel Chion and Guy Reibel in which he was mentioned with many details about his most famous masterpieces. The description was so suggesting I bought a record of Dedans/Dehors and I perfectly remember how deeply impressed and fascinated I was when listening to it for the first time. Since I have always admired and listened to Bernard Parmegiani's music with the same passion and was very sad when I got the news he had passed away, last friday. This is why I decided to pay him this tribute as a means to express my gratitude to him.
I dedicate this music to Bernard Parmegiani's family, friends and fellow musicians."
