Overcycler DIY 6 Voice Hybrid Synthesizer from GliGli - Maker of the Prophet-600 Firmware Update

SoundCloud description: "All sounds coming from my DIY synth, no effect, spatialization is built-in. As you can hear in this demo, it's very versatile, from huge analog pads to gritty digital sounds, going through all the inbetween possibilities. A great addition to my other analog synths!"

This one in via Soviet Space Child, via reddit, posted on June 24, 2015 by sfxgligli:

"It's a 6 voice polysynth. Each voice is 2 wavetable oscillators into a VCF into a VCA. I deliberately made it so the oscillators can strongly overdrive the SSM2044 filter, which stays very musical and smooth even when overdriven (eg you can hear it on the opening arpeggios). The voices are also panned left to right on the stereo output to get some spatialization."

Note the synth appears to have been completed back in 2013 based on the date of the demo above as well as previous posts on the GliGli website.

You might know GliGli from the P600fw firmware update for the Prophet-600 and the Matrix 1000 ROM upgrade. This 6 voice DIY hardware hybrid synth is called Overcycler. Some of the work behind it actually made it's way into the P600fw update.

From October 9, 2013:
"It will be:
- An expander, in a slanted box.
- 6 voice polyphonic with separate outs, 4 part multitimbral.
- Hybrid , two 12bit DACs per voice (wavetable oscillators for now), one SSM2044 filter, and 1/4 of SSM2164 VCA.
- Using a 20x4 characters LCD / 16 keys keypad / 10 potentiometers user interface.
- Using relatively simple hardware, strongly based on the KISS principle :)
- Having a strong character, each stage will allow some overdrive (filter, VCAs, ...)

I learned a lot while working on the Prophet 600, and I thought it could help me design a slightly different synth from the usual analog ones, more or less inspired by the PPG Wave.

Nothing groundbreaking, Mutable Instruments have done this for a while, but I had an unused set of SSM2044/SSM2164, and I wanted to see how far I could go in simplifying a polyphonic hybrid synthesizer."

Yamaha TG100 General MIDI Module Demo Song

Published on Jun 24, 2015 Sound Programming

"Factory demo song for the Yamaha TG100 synthesizer recorded direct with no additional effects.

The TG100 is a General MIDI tone generator based on 12-bit sample playback. Its limited sample ROM is noticeably lo-fi, and it had trouble competing against other 16-bit GM ROMpler modules of the era like the Roland SC-55. It was succeeded by the Yamaha TG300 and then the Yamaha MU80. While it is inexpensive on the used market, the TG100 is still somewhat popular for retro gaming setups."

"Factory demo song from the Zoom Streetboxx SB-246 drum machine recorded direct with no additional effects.

The Streetboxx is a drum machine with a sound set geared toward hip-hop. The sounds, which include more than 500 drum and percussion samples plus two dozen basses, were programmed by Beat Kangz. They went on to create the BKE Beat Thang, a much more high-end drum machine. The SB-246 is very inexpensive on the used market and is a good choice for a budget drum machine with a large sound set."

Erica Synths - Black LFO

"Next up in the series of videos on the new Black series of modules from Erica Synths is the LFO. A very nicely feature packed LFO with tap tempo, clock input, division and multiplication of the clock, 7 wave shapes, CV over rate and an internal Attack / Decay or Hold / Decay envelope generator which will loop or can be played via a gate. The envelope affects an on board VCA giving you LFO amplitude control with the envelope (very cool!).

Percussa releases new IMPROVISOR, updates MIDIBridge to v3.1

via Percussa

"Hi everyone, it's Bert here, the designer and inventor of the Percussa AudioCubes.

I'm very proud to announce a new version of IMPROVISOR, the generative MIDI Sequencer for AudioCubes.

The new version is built into MIDIBridge and is no longer a standalone application. You can find the updated MIDIBridge 3.1 with IMPROVISOR mode in the download section on our site. For the full story continue reading below :-)

For those of you who don't know IMPROVISOR, it's a MIDI sequencer that lets you compose generative music using AudioCubes.

The way it works is you first program velocity and semitone patterns into the sequencer, which then plays these back. Velocity and semitone steps are combined together with a root note to generate notes. The semistone steps are relative so they can be reused with different root notes.

The power of IMPROVISOR comes with linking the patterns to the AudioCubes: each cube is linked to its own semitone and velocity pattern, and when cubes detect each other, the semitone patterns will add up, giving rise to totall new patterns!

When you turn cubes placed next to each other, different velocity patterns will be used with the semitone patterns. You can also configure cubes as leaders or followers, which gives you control over which semitone patterns will be added up and which won't.

Many generative sequencers end up generating totally random results which are hard to use in practice, let alone perform live. IMPROVISOR was designed to let you start with easy to understand step sequencing, and then turn your programmed sequences into elements which can be generatively "remixed" using the AudioCubes, all live and in real time!

To learn more about IMPROVISOR mode in MIDIBridge 3.1, check out our manual. You can download MIDIBridge 3.1 in the downloads section on our website.

Development notes on this IMPROVISOR release

IMPROVISOR started as a Max/MSP patch, and was then first released as a standalone Max/MSP application a few years ago. After much feedback from AudioCube users I decided to turn it into a C++ application, about a year ago, and make it part of MIDIBridge.

By making it part of MIDIBridge, we were able to increase the speed and performance and add support for up to 16 cubes. We were also able to give IMPROVISOR access to all the other features in MIDIBridge such as MIDI clock sync. And by integrating IMPROVISOR into MIDIBridge it also instantly works with the Wireless AudioCubes PRO we released the past weeks!

IMPROVISOR was the first application to be integrated into MIDIBridge. I'm planning to integrate our other applications into MIDIBridge as well, such as the upcoming SYNTHOR, our digital modular synthesizer. This way you only need to update one application, MIDIBridge."

"The Legendary SH-101 to be found on so many hits over the years. A Boards of Canada favourite: Roygbiv, June 9th...many more. Those resonant 'thwack' sounds that are essential to acid, electro, techno that cannot not easily produced by much else. This is much better than the Sh2 or Sh9 but it is essentially a 'toy' and this can be seen from the plastic housing - a grey wolf in sheeps clothing.

The 'arp/sequencer' and the slick controls to adjust LFO, glide etc right next to the pitch/mod stick are key."

Waldorf Attack (IOS) impressions by Jürgen Driessen

Published on Jun 23, 2015 Jürgen Driessen

iTunes: Attack Drums - Waldorf Music

"All sounds and drum created with the new Waldorf ATTACK. As you may hear, it was a lot of fun creating the track. This time it`s a little bit more melodic to show you, that the Attack can do more than just drums. There is no additional FX (like reverb) used on the synths and not much EQ or compression. I used iRig to play Attack with MIDI. I used Ableton Suite /w Push to record, arrange and mix the demo... Enjoy!

Produktinfo taken from the Waldorf website:

It all started in early 2001, when Waldorf Attack took the VST world by storm. Several years later it is still one of the most commonly used virtual drum and percussion synthesizers worldwide. Why? Simply because Attack deftly delivers bombastic drum sounds suited to any musical style, with a unique sound engine offering instant access to all sound parameters.

Now we have migrated Attack to the iPad. Its impressive sound engine is cleverly complemented by an inte-grated 16-step sequencer that is as fun to use as it is useful. Attack offers 24 in-struments – each entirely programmable through a stunning, touch-optimized user interface. Its oscillators are fat, the filter flexible, and envelopes lightning fast. Each drum sound can be enriched with one of four independent insert multi-effects.
Attack’s sound engine is also capable of producing powerful polyphonic synth/bass/lead sounds – perfect for creating full-blown backing sequences.Above and beyond that, we have also added the new Waldorf Phrase Vocoder technology as an effect and could not help but notice that this is great fun to use. Input lyrics, output song. Adjust gender as you have always wanted? Why not! Just like Nave, Attack is a seriously in-depth musical instrument for the iPad. It is easy and great fun to use for sure, but at its core it is truly a sonic beast of an instrument, instrumental in inflicting out-and-out drum power – out of the tablet and into the walls!"

The XOXX Composer is a sequencer sampler that uses magnets to trigger sounds. Drumming has gone through many abstractions - percussions - drum machine - software. The XOXX Composer simplifies the complexity of making rhythmical patterns and breaks down the core functions into semantically understandable components.

The goal is basically that anyone, even someone without musical knowledge, should be able to quickly create unique and interesting rhythms in a playful and tactile approach.
