YAMAHA DX1 FM Synthesizer with Original Hardcover Owners Manual

via this auction

Some fun history via the seller:

"I purchased this DX-1 in a music store 25 years ago in 1991. I had gone into the shop to sell a guitar to have money for Christmas presents, saw the DX and flipped out. Weeks later I went back and was able to put it on layaway. Every week I would go in to make a payment and play with it for an hour or so. I called Yamaha for a manual and the lady on the phone said, “You have a what!!!??? Do you have any idea what this originally sold for?” I was a sheepish 24yo w/o a clue; she told me $13,900 and sent me a photocopied user manual for free. I reprinted it on parchment at Kinko’s, had it hard bound, and embossed with the DX logo in gold leaf. This was $130 (the book is pictured and included in the sale) as well as a new power cord (thank you eBay) and the original custom Anvil. (I re-foamed the case years ago and it is still in great condition)...

A little blurb about the DX1...

The DX-1, designed in 1983, has 5 microprocessors and 13 circuit boards. The wooden, full weighted-action keyboard assembly is immense, taking up about 65% of the space inside the enclosure. Underneath the keyboard are seven circuit boards that comprise the polyphonic aftertouch system managed by one of the processors. The aftertouch data is sent to the dual-DX voice engine where it modifies specific operator attributes according to the settings in the edit menu.

The DX-1 is bi-timbral: it has two 6-operator DX voice engines, each controlled by its own dedicated CPU. This is equivalent to two DX-7’s with the added capabilities of the performance-pair settings. The DX engines use the same OP-S and EG-S custom chipset, a 12-bit DAC and 4-BIT DAC reference voltage prescaler. Each DX engine has its own front panel volume expression pedals controls, as well as a 5th-order low pass filter to remove digital waveform clock noise.

The DX-1 is built in a manner that is rarely seen in synthesizers today. It is literally built like a tank from a heavy-gauge steel chassis, rosewood enclosure, custom frame pieces, heavy duty power supply and about 8,000 electronic components. It weighs 112.5 lbs and close to 200 lbs in its flight case."

Custom KORG MicroKORG with Angled Front Panel

via this auction

"Rock Solid modified MicroKorg includes microphone and power supply.

1/2" Red Oak finished

This mod makes the microKorg MUCH easier to use - no more hunching over the keyboard trying to read the selector knob guide.

There is some discoloration at the battery compartment (shown) but this was cleaned up and there was no effect on internal components. It is cosmetic discoloration only.

The Korg itself is held into the cradle with 4 screws on each side which are easy to remove if you want to disassemble. (if you want to paint, etc.)

There are 4 finish nails holding the end-boards to the bottom runner on each side. These are visible, but are sanded smooth. The ends were not glued so these could theoretically be removed as well. The finish nails were driven into pre-drilled holes.

This is fully functioning and is a nice solid piece -"

Blue PE Minisonic

via this auction

"Practical Electronics Minisonic analog synth.

These synths were constructed from schematics in the practical electronics magazine and are quite rare. This one uses the PCB that was available from the magazine.

This is being sold as spares or repair because VCO 1 is not functioning correctly, it can be heard but is not responding to the controls on the panel. VCO 2 is working as are the envelope generators. I am unable to test the filter and ring modulator because I have lost the patch cables. There is also a tear in one of the speakers.

I have copies of the magazine articles with schematics so this is probably and easy fix for someone with the right knowledge."

"A little improvised jam all played in live. The mini brute it going through a few effects in logic, the moog is going through an MXR carbon copy, and the prophet has a bit of valhalla reverb on it. For some reason the prophet was internally clipping, which I couldn't stop no matter what i tried.

Album coming soon..."

Synth Jam- Roland System 1m - Moog Werkstatt - Beatstep Pro - Microbrute - Mopho - EMX1

Published on Jan 3, 2016 Earmonkey Music

"Continuing my Synth Jam Journal, here's today's entry. The thing I tried to do here was incorporate the System 1m patch points with the Moog Werkstatt (Mother 32 coming on Tuesday!!!).

Here are the connections: Beatstep Pro CV Pitch out to Werkstatt VCO EXP FM IN. I don't have any gate being sent to the Werkstatt because the Werkstatt VCA mode is set to ON so it drones. The System 1m is sending CV out of the ENV to the Werkstatt VCF IN so that every time I play a note, the filter on the Werkstatt is affected. The Werkstatt LFO is set to square mode and is modulating the VCF internally, so the additional VFC modulation gives more movement. Finally, the LFO OUT of the Werkstatt is going back in to the System 1m Filter LFO so the System 1m and Werkstatt filters are both being modulated by the Werkstatt square wave LFO.

The Mopho is playing simple bass notes also from the Beatstep pro via MIDI on the same channel as the Werkstatt so that bass line is doubled.

And of course, the Microbrute and Werkstatt are running through the Roland RE-301 Space Chorus. There's a bit of Valhalla Ubermod and Shimmer on the whole mix to just give it more life."
