New Euro Manufacturer Catalyst Audio Introduces Time’s Arrow Sequencer Eurorack Module

Published on Dec 7, 2015 catalyststudio

A new eurorack module from the recently formed Catalyst Audio. The playlist for the videos above follow. Full details on their first eurorack module, Time's Arrow, further below.

1. Times Arrow Cmin Basslines [CV/Gate/Accent to FutureRetro 777]
2. Times Arrow Video Manual Utility Mode
3. Times Arrow Vid Manual Seq Mode
4. Times Arrow Video Manual RND Submodes
5. Times Arrow Video Manual RND Mode
6. Times Arrow Video Manual Extra Features

via of Catalyst Audio:

"So.

What is it?

So at it’s most basic it is a 16 step sequencer,

It can do all of your normal sequencer functions etc...

But also-

What we think sets this apart from the other currently available sequencers out there right now (and yes there are a lot!) is it's randomization features. It was designed to basically allow you to start with randomness, and then to exert some level of control over this randomness until you start to get useable (but still unpredictable) results. A 'happy accident generator' maybe?

A very basic description would be that each step of the sequence contains information about 5 different 'events' Notes (CV value), Gate, Accent, Tie, and Slide. You can manually set up these events, like you would with a more traditional sequencer, but Times Arrow allows you to randomize any or all of these events either manually (button press) or via a trigger signal. Once a new pattern has been generated, that new pattern will continue to loop and will only be altered by another button press or trigger. Each "event" can have different probability settings, and each "event" can be set on a per step basis to be excluded from randomization.

It’s hard for me to feel like I can do justice to it in one or two paragraphs, so please check out the videos posted on our site www.CatalystAudio.com or feel free to ask me questions here and I will do my best to answer.

I will say that I have gotten some amazingly cool sequences out of this thing, stuff I probably would have never come up with on my own. (Of course I’m biased, both cause I created it and because my definition of an “amazingly cool sequence” is probably different from yours.)

It is currently available at Foxtone music right now, and should be up at Analog Haven by the end of the week.

Features
Adjustable seq length from 1 - 16 steps
Internal quantizer with 16 selectable scales
Constant time (303 style) slide
Buffered output voltages from 0 - 8v (8 oct range)
(Pre-quantizer) Transpose input
Reset to last step
Forward, Backward, PingPong, Pendulum, Random, and "Drunken Walk" seqencer directions
Firmware optimized for extremely low jitter and tight timing.
Synchronized randomization (manual or CV triggered) of Notes, Accents, Ties, Gates, and Slides, Alt CV and Octave Offset.
Independent probability settings of Notes, Accents, Ties, Gates, and Slides.
Independently remove any event on any step from randomization.
Sync/reset output
Random stepped CV output (0-5v)

So, this is the second video and track produced using my mobile electronic music production and performance platform; The Lunchbox.

I was hoping that my second endeavor using this would be a little more grande. I wanted to be in the park or next to a river or something but I've been sick lately so the coffee table in the living room will have to do I guess.

I went a little more dancey on this track. Trying to build a full set so I can gig with this thing. It'll be so nice to have everything I need all pre-wired and ready to go.

I did, however, have fun going a little deeper with the video editing part of things so hopefully it'll be a little more interesting to look at. I used a little macro and wide angle lens on my phone to achieve varying effects."

Moog Prodigy Eurorack Clone

This one in via Manu. You'll find additional details and pics on his website here.

"I have designed my own version of Moog Prodigy synth in Eurorack-format (104HP) with these modifications:

- VCO2 manual PW-adjust
- option for external PW-modulation for both VCO's
- drone mode (VCA full on)
- sync contour control with filter AD (amount can be controlled with pitch wheel)
- VCO1/2 external FM-input (V/Oct)
- filter external VCF-input
- gate-input
- keyboard CV-input (V/Oct)

It has the same components as the original so the sound is 100% Moog. PCBs are two layer designs with dedicated ground layers. Components are thru hole components in one layer. Only the mod/pitch wheels are in a separate module (modified Doepfer module)."

Update: I asked Manu if this was a one off project or if he plans to make it available either via DIY instructions or kit form. Currently it is one off, but if there is enough interest who knows: "I am not yet sure what to do with this project. Let's see if there are enough interested builders."  If you are interested reach out to him on his website.

"Here's another Polar Junior 106!

Inside it has the "total restoration package" and the voice chips and work are guaranteed for 8 years.

On the outside , It is a completely new custom synth , in our favorite white polar color scheme.

This Junior 106 also has a copy of the "best of the best" sounds, organized via bank.

All junior 106 owners will receive a free upgrade in the coming months. It's a special "bass mode octave switch" that puts the junior down into the low octaves.

You can still access all notes thru midi, and patches in 16' with the sub oscillator are still VERY low when played on the junior's key bed.

This is a perfect gigging synth, as many are already using the junior to play live."

Megaohm Delta distortion

Megaohm Delta distortion from Richard Galbraith on Vimeo.

"Here's a patch highlighting the Megaohm Delta low pass filter, with some high resonance and FM settings. The arpeggiation is the result of two LFOs (Grove Audio) and a joystick (Grove Audio) being fed into a Synthesizers.com Q171 quantizer, which then drives a dotcom Q106 VCO. Two waveforms from this oscillator are used, the saw directly into the Delta, and the triangle first routed through the Ian Fritz/SSL 5 Pulser. The background is a rather uninspired sequence...a microbrute being sequenced by a Fritz/SSL Double Deka oscillator at low frequency. Both parts are given digital delay. Some Valhalla Room is added at the beginning and again towards the end."

Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth 2 Classic Nintendo Sound

Published on May 17, 2016 TecHyper

"The Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II is an AVR-microcontroller-based music synthesizer that faithfully recreates the classic sound of the Nintendo Entertainment System’s audio hardware. The device is the successor to the Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synthesizer, a project launched on Kickstarter in 2015.

No programming is required and there is no software to install. Simply connect a MIDI controller to play the NES classics live or create your own original chiptunes.

The design of the Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II is the culmination of the lessons learned from the original Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synthesizer project launched in 2015. The most valuable resource in the development of the Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II has been the feedback from the community of Kickstarter backers who funded the original project. The Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II features many hardware and software improvements on its predecessor."
