Modular on the Spot Seattle 9.10.16 at Volunteer Park

Published on Sep 15, 2016 darksideothetune

"#modularonthespot Dark Side of the Tune plays the modular synthesizer live in the park.
Modular on the Spot began as an impromptu live modular synthesizer performance gathering organized by Bana Haffar and Eric (Rodent 516) Cheslak in Los Angeles, California. The idea is to bring people together to experience live modular in the context of the outdoors, away from clubs and studios. These events are entirely focused on modular synthesizers - no external gear such as laptops or drum machines are allowed.

This show has traveled to San Francisco, Atlanta, and Asheville, North Carolina for the recent Moogfest and is being presented in cooperation with Bradley Millington in Seattle at Gasworks Park on July 16th from 6-9PM.

Modular synthesizers let the artist mix and match function modules to create their own personal instrument. Hands on control and the ability to be re-routed by patch cables in whichever configuration the user chooses creates a personal sound. The results of the complex patches are often experimental by nature."

The ZAQ RK-2000 appears to be a custom cased Beringer BCR2000.

"A little demo of the Zaquencer / RK-002 controlling the Volca Sample.

Sequencer 3 & 4 are used on the same midi channel (sent to the Volca Sample). 4 is set to drum mode, 3 is set to note mode.

The a. parameter of the Zaquencer is set to send out program changes so I can change the Volca Sample's channel which is under chromatic control.

At 1:30 I start the chromatic part and at 1:44 I start changing the Chromatic Sample Channel.

Volca Sample and Volca Keys are merged with the RK-003 and recorded in Ableton, adding some compression and filtered delay."

Mystery Vintage Mini Synthesizer BB

Here's an interesting find in via Justin.

If anyone knows what it is and/or has anymore info on it, let us know.

If you zoom in on the bottom pic, you'll see the controls, left to right, are as follows:

WA-WA with Mechanic and Range knobs, and switches below, one Automatic and one Rate.

INFRA-MODULATOR with a Power label below, and knobs for Rate and Range. On/Off and Rate switches below.

COLOR-OPERATING with eight sliders and eight On/Off switches. I'm guessing these are harmonic amount sliders with the ability to switch them off on the fly. So this is likely an additive synth. Curious if it sounds more like an organ or a synth. Also curious if it's monophonic or poly/paraphonic.

GLISSANDO / PORTAMENTO with two sliders and two switches. One switch is On/Off and the other appears to be direction. BTW, this section makes me think this is more synth than organ and likely monophonic.

NOISE GENERATOR knob with On/Off switch.

VOLUME knob

POWER On/Off switch.

Note the absence of envelopes.

Update: it kind of reminds me of the Baldwin Syntha Sound. That one had a SPECTRUM SHAPER. Note the lack of a Baldwin label on the front of the Syntha Sound. The BB on the front could be for Baldwin, considering it's actually a mirrored B.

Update2: New pics in via Justin along with some info.

"I spoke to the girl who owns the synth. She said its a Czech synth and it belongs to her family and was packed away in storage for a long time until she placed it in her store as a display object. She said its not for sale."

The synth is located in a shop in Prague.

Jam with Korg Minilogue, Roland JU-06, MicroBrute, Korg Volca, Ableton Live, Push 2 - Detour #7

Published on Sep 15, 2016 Sonic Detours

"I got lucky the other day and bypassed the waiting list for a Korg Minilogue at my local music shop. I have been wanting one of these since they came out and I was not disappointed... this is a fantastic synth!

Here's my first performance with my new silver beast. Be sure to listen with head phones or external speakers... the bass is pretty deep and I can't hear it on my MacBook internal speakers at all.

As usual, everything was sequenced and mixed in Ableton Live, using plenty of compressors, reverbs and delays. Apart from the drums, all parts were made with the hardware synths you see in the video and the stereo master was recorded in real time on my iPhone 6, along with the video. No multi tracking of post processing - everything was played "live".

Gear used:

- Korg Minilogue
- Roland Boutique JU-06
- Korg Volca Bass
- Art Tube Preamp
- Korg Volca Keys
- Arturia MicroBrute
- Ableton Live
- Push 2
- Novation LaunchControl

The main chord progression in this performance is the first 4 bars of the "Liquid Pad" preset on the Minilogue. I came across this pattern while flicking through the presents and I just had to do something with it.

The bass is delivered by the MicroBrute... just a simple square/sine wave patch with pulse width modulation and the filter cutoff way down.

I'm playing the JU-06 live on the Minilogue keyboard (local MIDI control is off). I really enjoy playing a real keyboard after being stuck with the Push 2 pads for a while... man I hate being locked into a key and scale when I play! I've been a bit worried about the size of the keys on the Minilogue, but they worked out great - no problem at all.

The Volca Keys plays the high pitched lead that is introduced in the first breakdown, and the Volca Bass is responsible for the 303 style pattern in the last part of the performance. I use a small Art Tube Preamp on the Volca Bass to create some warm, fuzzy distortion (not in the shot).

I use two drum racks in Ableton Live for the drums - one with TR 808 samples and one based on the lesser known but super cool Boss D55 drum machine (I just love that rim shot). I'm not using the Volca Beats for this performance at all.

The hardware synths were sequenced in Ableton Live and the patterns arranged in scenes, allowing me to "perform" the arrangement in real time. I mapped the buttons on the LaunchControl to mutes on individual drum voices, so they could easily be switched in and out during the performance."

All parts here.

New Mutable Music Things – Ears Eurorack Module

Wait a sec. Mutable as in Mutable Instruments, Music Things as in Music Thing? That is correct.

via Thonk

"Ears is Mutable’s take on the Music Thing Modular Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

We don’t normally stock non DIY products at Thonk, but when Olivier offered us a worldwide exclusive on the first batch of his new Ears module… how could we refuse?!

This module brings together two of the most (if not the most..) prolific and creative designers in the open source Eurorack scene, Mutable Instruments and Music Thing Modular.

Ears is Mutable’s take on Tom Whitwell’s Mikrophonie module, Ears is a perfect match for physical synthesis modules like Rings or Elements, but it can also be the gateway between external audio sources and your modular system.

Qu-Bit Electronix provides a constant drone, taking a loop of my voice humming away, as Elements is played by Ears, with the various changes affected by my touch. Arturia BeatStep Pro offers up the melodic content. Simple but fun. This looks likely to live in my performance case for some time now!"

"The unit appears to be working reasonably well, I noticed 3F and 3D# keys seem to be not responding, as well as PERCUSSIVE and ENSEMBLE buttons having bad response/contacts even though the function itself is fine. There are also slight bad contacts on some of the switches and scratch noise on the knobs, which could do with some servicing/adjustment.

Otherwise all the preset sounds working fine as well as all other switches and knobs working well to the best of my knowledge."

"The Expert Sleepers ES-8 is a USB audio interface in a Eurorack synth module.

Simply connect the ES-8 with a USB cable directly to your Mac or iOS device and it appears as a 12-in 16-out audio interface ready to use for audio, control voltages, or both.

Both inputs and outputs are DC-coupled, meaning you can pass CVs in both directions between your hardware modular and software CV environments, such as Silent Way, Reaktor, zMors or max/MSP.

The ES-8 also has ADAT ports, which you can use to connect another audio interface, for example one with mic preamps or 1/4” jacks to hook up your other instruments.

You can also connect via ADAT to an Expert Sleepers ES-3 for more CV outputs.

The ES-8 also has a direct expansion connection for the Expert Sleepers ES-5, supporting up to 48 gate or trigger outputs.

The ES-8’s release date is October 1st 2016. For more information, please visit the website.

All four tracks are ran in Unison mode for a massive stack of awesomeness. I occasionally go into Poly mode. Since Poly mode sequences each voice in turn, you get a kind of analog wave sequencing!
