Doc Sketchy DIY Videos

Published on Mar 9, 2018 docsketchy

This one in via John L Rice.

Doctor Sketchy is David G. Dixon, who designed a few Intellijel modules. Check out the David Dixon label for some of his previous creations.

Playlist:

1. Doc Sketchy ASR Demo
Here's a little video of my ASR module. This is my improved version of the CGS (Cat Girl Synth) ASR from Ken Stone. I have added some extra useful features, such as Shift/Bypass switches and a Load/Loop switch, which is pretty fun to use. I've also added an input attenuator, which to me is crucial. I put a new PCB that I had just stuffed for a customer into my existing panel to test. I found that it was really drifty (like, portamento drifty) -- the culprit: a dodgy LF444 opamp used for the S&H buffers. I bought some LF444s at a local shop (originally sourced from Digikey) and they are all crap (either defective or counterfeit) -- I had forgotten. Anyway, I replaced it with a TL064, and there is no drift at all. I'm also using 100n film caps, so those are large enough to avoid obvious drift if the input bias current of the opamps is reasonably low.

2. Doc Sketchy Dual Interpolating Scanner Demo
Here is the dual scanner, all put together and ready to send to its lucky buyer. I'm feeding it with the outputs of 4 VCOs, with two up-octave outputs into inputs 5 and 6, all tuned to a chord. Here I'm mostly playing with the switch that selects either two independent 4-channel scanners or one 8-channel scanner. It all works perfectly -- I just wish those little pots were a bit further apart. As usual, boards, bare or stuffed, and complete modules are available. Just ask (preferably on Muffwiggler).

3. Doc Sketchy Interpolating Scanner Demo
Here is the second demo of my new interpolating scanner circuit, with the improvements suggested by the Muff Wiggler beta testing team. I'd still like to figure out how to get the CV to maintain a constant range as the Width pot is adjusted, but I haven't so far. In any case, the Fader and Width pots are doing exactly what I want them to do.

Published on Dec 4, 2012 nuovafesta

"The Soloist 505 is a very simple monophonic synth. Its look reminds one of a Roland SH-1000, but with its controls on the front. The sound is very clear and clean like many Italian cousins (Siel). There is a preset section but the waveforms can also be modified in 'free' mode. Funny sounds, lysergic and ancestral. But the keyboard is good and there are some presets such as the sax, trombone, cosmic, flute e telstar which have some power worth exploring. It's cute and slightly rare. No MIDI or CV here."

Unique Synth T-Shirts by Re5etuk

You can find them at Re5etuk's Society6 store. You will find other non-synth designs there as well.

"They feature unique designs for classic synth and drum machines including sh101, mc202, tb303, Juno 106, tr808, tr909.

Each logo feature isometric lettering / numbers with a touch of colour and I’ll continue to add more designs and manufacturers over the coming weeks."

I like the matching color badges on them.

Some background on Re5etuk and his designs from the site: "Video game developer of almost 30 years , recently developed my passion for illustration based in London, working towards developing abstract illustrations within digital and 'real' mediums . My work focuses on hand created illustrations avoiding the use of 3d rendering packages as a way to differentiate the work undertaken in typical game development.

Details in the work is largely clean and precise for the majority of the process , towards the end i like to fracture it a little , add elements of optical illusions and twist elements to ensure it'd be difficult to recreate in typical 3d."

Tune-Yards - Look at Your Hands (Official Video) - Featuring the the DSI Tempest

Published on Oct 24, 2017 Tune-Yards

This one is not necessarily a synth demo, but considering how prominent the DSI Tempest is featured, I thought it deserved a post. Also, I thought it was kind of cool that there is a credit for "modular synth" in the description for the video below. I remember the first time I heard this song in the background while posting away. About a minute in, I was like, "what the heck am I listening to?!" It was like the bizarre thoughts that go through your mind right before you fall asleep. Some of the other tracks on the album are like that as well. This track and some others grew on me. Regardless of our musical tastes, the Tune-Yards are great musicians and the production quality of the album is top notch.

@percussa #ssp @kickstarter update - Return of the 4-voice Demo and MIDI Controller Auto-Detection

Published on Mar 9, 2018 PERCUSSA

"The past week I decided to focus on MIDI-related features in our SSP software ... read more https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/..."

"It's time for another update :-) The past week I decided to focus on MIDI-related features in our SSP software. I wanted to add listboxes to the Global menu of the SSP so you can see MIDI input and output devices connected to the SSP, and I wanted it to work in such a way that when you connect a USB MIDI class-compliant device, the ports would be automatically discovered and added to the listboxes. In addition I also wanted the first new input and output port to be automatically opened, and I wanted to make sure that repeatedly plugging/unplugging different MIDI controllers would not cause any problems in the software, with ports remaining open while the device is already gone. Obviously there were a lot of subtle bugs and challenges, as a MIDI input or output port might be used multiple times in the same application and connecting MIDI devices/ports in Linux is done using Virtual ports in the ALSA stack.

You might remember from the videos we did during the campaign that we did a 4-voice wavetable synth demo. I decided to revisit that idea and recreate the preset on the SSP: 4 wavetable oscillators, 4 amplitude envelopes, 2 LFOs for XZ modulation, 2 input modules for interfacing with the Intellijel Dixie II and Make Noise MATHS for XY modulation, and of course the global delay and reverb section (also running on the SSP, of course).

In the video I connect a generic USB MIDI controller, the Nektar Impact GX61. It shows up immediately in the Global menu, after which I can start playing the synth patch. In the patch I've created prior to the video, I've mapped the 4 wavetable oscillators and the 4 amplitude envelopes to the 4 voices. The MIDI notes are assigned round-robin to the voices.

Meanwhile Celine has been working on some other exciting features: signal visualisation and scaling in the network editor. We'll be posting a video about her work in the next update :-) Until next week, and thanks again for your patience and support.

Bert & Celine"

Noe's Minimoog Restoration (by Synthpro)

Published on Mar 9, 2018 synthpro

"This is a early minimoog built 4/11/74 that I brought life back to after years of setting in storage.

There was no trigger signal when it came ion and found that the keyboard connector was the issue. I replaced the connector and this gave this unit a full overhaul once I had everything 100% working. Replaced all common failure parts, recap, thermal compensation mods to oscillators, dead zone upgrade for pitch wheel, 9 hours of burn in, chassis cleaning and detailing, and a final video to show the end results.

Thanks for watching,

Jörg Schaaf - Hypnotica Hypnotica

Published on Mar 9, 2018 Jörg Schaaf

"Tonight I tried to bring a little bit controlled random into a A-155 sequence. My approach is a little bit different from other setups. It uses one VCA, a noise source and a sample and hold module. Very important in this setup is also a quantizer for the pitch control voltage. I used the Delta Cep A quantizer for that and selected a minor pentatonic scale for my sequence. The output from the sequencer is fed into the VCA input and the VCA output connects to the 1V/Oct input of the oscillator. If you run the sequence you can already change the resulting melodies by changing the VCA level. You will realize, that lower pitched notes will get affected less than higher pitched notes. I like that behavior. Adding random is quite easy. One trigger line of the A-155 sequencer triggers the Sample and Hold Circuit. The noise is connected to the S&H probe input and the S&H output connects to the VCA control voltage input. Because of the quantizer, only matching notes are generated.

I added a bass sequence from the Spectralis Hybrid synth with Spectralis' internal step sequencer. Some steps are running with a probability of only 50% to get variations in the bass sequence too. On top of the two main sequences I added a little disturbance by triggering a chimes multisample I did last week. In order to get a more unrealistic metallic sound out of that multisample I set the envelope to a very short decay and send this through the hiphpass filter, put some random pan onto it and added a pitch modulation (vibrato). Logic ProX acts as the clock for the A-155 (via an Arturia Keystep) and for the Spectralis.

I could not resist to play some live notes on top of the backings. I played mainly the Accelerator, the DX-7 II and the D-550. I hope, you like it...

And yes - everything sounds just better with a couple of different delays. So I added them here too ;-)"
