Chesnokov on the Obi

Published on Jul 23, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Chesnokov's 'Little Poem' ('We Praise Thee'), here played on the Obi. The organ-like sound works well. The original instrumentation is vocal - see here - [embedded below]

Chesnokov is probably one of my all-time favourite composers. Stunning vocal music.

PS I'm just sight-reading through the work. The laptop is sitting on my knee (score is on the laptop), so I had to sit side-on to avoid it being in the way of my hands, therefore, some stretches ended up being stretchier than they should have been!

If this post introduce a few people to Chesnokov, it has served its purpose.

His story is quite tragic. He was the final choirmaster of the original Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (famous as the location of the premiere of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture), but the cathedral was destroyed under Stalin - after which Chesnokov never composed another piece.

All best
Kris"

In the Field with CDP [Episode 77]

Published on Jul 23, 2018 CatSynth TV

"We check in with the members of CDP as they prepare for their upcoming show at the Outsound New Music Summit. We also chat with Amanda Chaudhary, who happens to be owner of CatSynth and the producer of this channel.

Band members include:
Amanda Chaudhary - Keyboard, Vocoder
Tom Djll - Synthesizers
Mark Pino - Drums
Joshua Marshall - Saxophones

CDP will be performing at the Community Music Center (544 Capp Street, San Francisco) at 8PM on Friday, July 27, 2018. For more information and tickets please visit http://outsound.org/summit/

'CDP (Census Designated Place) is a Bay Area avant-jazz/funk ensemble led by Amanda Chaudhary. They weave together the diverse strands of Mwandishi-era Herbie Hancock, Soft Machine Six and Seven, and Sun Ra’s late 1970s studio recordings. Live performances move effortlessly between snappy 'jingles' and extended improvisations backed by tight, driving rhythms. As far out as it sometimes gets, CDP never loses the thread of the melody or the humor.'

Published on Jul 23, 2018 Knobs

Note this is the first post to feature Hungry Robot Modular. We have a new maker in town. As you can see in the video above from Knobs, these are individual modules in stomp-box like format. Know the jacks are on the top face only and there are no pedal switches. These are meant for the desktop and not the floor.

"Today, we do modular synthesis, with pedals.

0:31 - Overview
1:37 - Minimal
2:07 - Not minimal
2:47 - With semi-modular
3:24 - Super-synth
3:50 - Outro

Other synthesizers:
Make Noice 0-Coast
Malekko Manther

Details on the modules via https://www.hungryrobotmodular.com/:

"The Hungry Robot VCO is an all-analog, low cost, workhorse of a VCO. It can output triangle, sawtooth, and square waveforms simultaneously with tremendous bass response. The VCO has exceptional 1V/OCT tracking with FM modulation. The FM modulation input has a built-in CV attenuator as well as an inversion switch. The square wave has PWM with a built-in CV attenuator. As with all Hungry Robot "Modular Boxes" the VCO can be powered with a simple 9V DC, Negative Center power supply.

"This listing is for one Roland Jupiter-4 analog synthesizer. It is the rev. 2 version with identical filter structure as the Jupiter-8 (IR3109). It is also the rare version with the factory-installed metal brackers installed on the side for mounting on the official Roland stand for it (stand not included). All sliders are extremely smooth-feeling and clean. A CHD midi kit has been installed which allows for midi note, keyshift, midi sync of the arp, etc. Physically it is in top shape with minimal signs of use (mostly just wear on the sides."

Eric Archer Lite2Sound PX photodiode amplifier optical synth filter

Published on Jul 23, 2018 EA78751

"This video demonstrates a experimental audio filter effect. The Lite2Sound PX photodiode amplifier kit v.1.4 from rarewaves.net is used. The CRT is a Tektronix 603 X-Y monitor. Connect an audio sawtooth oscillator to the X input. Connect the Lite2Sound output to the Y input, and also to the speakers. Point the photodiode at the CRT. Objects that block the photodiode's view of the CRT are transformed into audio waveforms. The silhouette of the obstruction becomes impressed into the audio waveform and you can morph it in real time by moving your hand. The sound is like a combination of PWM and notch / bandpass filter. And at the end of the video, the original "comb filter" effect is demonstrated!"

"Get under the hood of the Circuit synth engine

Easy-to-use graphical user interface for accessing the super-powerful Circuit synth engine

Picking up where Novation's popular Circuit Macro Editor left off, Circuit Synth Editor enables control over sounds by editing Circuit's two synths. It delivers an easy-to-use editor, perfect for getting under the hood of the whole Circuit synth engine. Circuit Synth Editor is fully integrated into the Components content manager for fast, stable performance. It's available now at components.novationmusic.com.

Key features

View output waveforms

Using the drop-down menu, it's possible to choose the oscillator wave type from the Classic wave types and Wavetable types. Having selected a wavetable type, it's then possible to select the waves within the table using the Index control, and select the amount of interpolation between the waves using the Interpolate control. The graphic display of the waveform changes to reflect the output waveform, taking into account the Index and Interpolate controls.

In-depth LFO editing

Controls for LFOs 1 and 2 are presented when the LFO tab is selected. There's a visual representation of the LFO type, as well as a drop-down box to select the LFO type. Controls for Rate and Delay are grouped, and common settings are arranged to the right. The large 1 and 2 on the left-hand side select between LFOs 1 and 2. All other controls on the tab update when these large numbers are selected.

I call it Modular Beginnings, because it should be the first song of a complete Modular Eurorack Synth album that I want to make this year. In between working on all my other movie and tv-series projects. So this should be the beginning.

No computers were used in the performance of this song. All modular Eurorack synths, recorded live in a single take and into the ER-301 module."

The Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s Variations V

Variations V (1966) - Merce Cunningham Dance Company Published on Oct 14, 2013

"Merce Cunningham
1966, 49:05, b&w, sound

First composed and performed in 1965, 'Variations V' is a true testament to 1960's experiments with "intermedia"—a coexistence and cutting across of artistic genres that profoundly informed Cunningham's choreographic practice. Video is materially integrated into the performance, with projections by Stan VanDerBeek and overlaid TV distortions by Nam June Paik enveloping the dancers. Twelve sound-sensitive electronic poles dot the stage; sound is triggered by the dancers' movements and then altered or delayed by the musicians. 'Variations V' predates Cunningham's 'video-dances,' demonstrating a different moment in his relation to the technology.

"The first synthesizer ever made by Korg in 1973, this original Univox Mini-Korg synthesizer is in excellent condition! This instrument is a lovely little analogue synth capable of fat Moog-like tones. These are really unique synths made with high-quality Japanese engineering, style, and cosmetic beauty.

This synthesizer’s sole owner took great care of the instrument and its original UNIVOX case (RARE), which is also included in the sale. The outside of the case is protective and in great condition with all latches and hinges working perfectly. The foam on the inside of the case is brittle from age and is easily replaced."

Simmons Digital Clap Trap Drum Percussion Synthesizer

"The Simmons Clap Trap is a rare and early electronic drum module. Capable of producing some pretty gnarly sounds that you might not usually associate with a hand clap. Can be triggered by audio or manually. Double your snares with the Clap Trap for fattening or feature the instrument all on its own. This fun little toy is prefect for producers looking to add out of the box textures to their tracks!"

Update: This is Digital as the name of the unit states, and not analog as the title of the auction listing states.  Thanks goes to alx @t0neburst for catching it!
