Stop turning up your Prophet 6 by Everett Dudgeon

Published on Aug 17, 2018 EverettDudgeon138

"Some criticism the Prophet 6 and OB6 received is they sounded too harsh. As it turns out a lot of people are unknowingly driving the filter way too hard. I learned about it through some feedback with my John Carpenter patches. By default when the VCO's volume is maxed out in the mixer section and the Amp Envelope's amount is maxed out it's automatically driving the filter hard. Backing them off to 50% gets you a warmer and smoother sound, closer to the original Prophet-5 territory."

Inter-app CV Control... iVCS3 Filter Controlled by Model15 CV via AUDIO Connection

Published on Aug 21, 2018 James Edward Cosby

"Hi, this takes my Audio CV idea a step further into Realtime Audio Voltage Control. The #MoogModel15 is patched to output it's LFO directly to the 15's Audio Bus, this bus audio is routed via #APEMatrix directly into #iVCS3 's Audio Input Lines. iVCS3 is patched to run a sequence using Osc1 & 2 via iVCS3's Filter, the CV Audio arriving in iVCS3's Input 2 is then patched to modulate iVCS3's Filter Frequency!... Have fun!"

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #53: preenFM2 - Song 1

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the preenFM2. It's a 14 voice 4-part multitimbral polyphonic DIY FM generator with 28 FM algorithms from 3 to 6 operators, 7 default and 6 user waveforms, filter, arpeggiator, etc.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
preenFM2 - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a small Behringer mixer into the pc for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track."

Modular + Pedals #18: Red Panda Tensor - Mutable Instruments Rings

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Modular + Pedals

"Generative ambient patch. Patch notes below.

Patch notes:

Squarp Instruments Hermod is sequencing and strumming Rings. The sequence is a product of the interaction of the Random, Chance, Swing, Ratchet and Scale effects and a few cleverly placed notes in the step sequence.

Mutable Instruments Rings is in sympathetic strings mode with 4 note polyphony. Brightness is modulated by a a sequence + random lfo on track 3 of the Hermod. Frequency is modulated by a heavily attenuated lfo from Peaks. Damping is modulated by the S&H on Kinks which is triggered by a gate sequence on track 2 of the Hermod. Position is modulated by a sequence on track 2 of the Hermod. Output goes to the ALM Busy Circuits S.B.G and into the Red Panda Tensor.

The Red Panda Tensor is the NXT mode, full loop length, pitch at + 2 oct, random at 50%, direction: ALT.

The output of the ALM Busy Circuits S.B.G goes to the Mutable Instruments Ripples which is filtering out a lot of highs. And from there to Clouds.

Mutable Instruments Clouds is running Parasites in the Oliverb mode at 16kHz/8-bit: ยต-law."

The BEST Eurorack Tape Delay module?

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Noir Et Blanc Vie

"Hey guys, let’s check out the newest offering from Strymon. The module was a pleasure to use over the last few months. Strymon definitely knows their way around an effects unit, I really enjoyed the looping portion of the module just for fun jamming. It’s also basically control per function in a small amount of HP which is impressive design wise. Overall I think the Magneto is not just the best X-man, but the best delay module haha"

SynthScaper 1.5 Update - Arpeggiator / Sequencer Overview

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Igor Vasiliev

"Synthesizer specially designed for creating and experiments with ambient soundscapes in wide range from noises to melodic instruments and everything in between. AppStore: https://itunes.apple.com/app/synthsca...

The sound engine of SynthScaper has its own unique sounding differ from any other software synths. You can construct outstanding melodic pads or atonal soundscapes from different kind of built-in or downloaded samples by using all power of multi-layered oscillators, chains of filters and effects, envelope generators and low frequency oscillators. Or you can create your own sound scenes combining oscillators presets from build-in library. Or just use predefined scenes. More about SynthScaper: http://motion-soundscape.blogspot.com"

"What's New

Added an advanced arpeggiator / sequencer for each oscillator with modes where the keyboard can start the sequence and shift it depending on the key. Also, you can record sequence steps using screen or MIDI keyboard or select sequences from other scenes. The start and tempo of the sequence can be synchronized with Ableton Link, Inter-App audio or with external MIDI devices.

With this update you can access SynthScaper samples by using iOS 11 Files app. Just open app "Files" - "On My iPad (iPhone)" - "SynthScaper" to copy, move, delete or rename any file which contains in SynthScaper. Also with Files app you can easily copy samples to SynthScaper from any other apps or storage cloud services.

All changes:

● Own sequencer / arpeggiator for each oscillator.
● Sync with Ableton Link, Inter-App audio and MIDI.
● Select sequences from other scenes (if they defined).
● Record sequence from virtual or MIDI keyboards.
● Mode when keyboard starts and shifts sequence.
● Mode "All" to set params for all sequencers at once.
● Button "Rand" on main screen generate new scene.
● Access files thru iOS 11 Files app.
● Support bluetooth MIDI controllers.
● Built-in description updated.
● Several minor bugs were fixed."

This is the Brass-style controller coupled with the analog sound source. In addition to the built-in sounds, the EVI/EWV combination can also output MIDI and drive external sound sources. If you have watched any television or movies since the 1980's, you've probably heard wind synthesizers and not known it."

Lot of 9 Moog Synthesizer Factory Service Manuals; Original, complete 1977-79

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"'Eight of these nine manuals are in original bindings, not photocopies. Seven of them are in 'pristine' condition, but will have occasional (and helpful) handwritten annotations by the Moog Custom Engineering team (including myself) circa 1978-1979. One of them (MicroMoog/MultiMoog) is a little more well-used than the others, but still excellent! All manuals are 100% complete with no torn or missing pages. Two original Moog logo'd 3-ring binders are in perfect condition. These manuals were retired from service and sold to me in Moog's Buffalo, NY Custom Engineering Lab as part of our annual refresh cycle when they were replaced with newer revisions in late-1979. As such, they were only used for a year or two and have been carefully preserved by me for the last 39 years.'

Seeing beat-up copies of a single Minimoog service manuals priced at hundreds of dollars, it's hard to guess what these are worth. I'm having no small amount of emotional turmoil in deciding to sell these, the quicker they are gone the better!

Please read my description and make an offer.

History: During the years I worked in factory test/tune and in the Custom Engineering group for Moog Music in Buffalo, NY, the company would hold a (more or less) annual sale of unused, retired or otherwise un-needed equipment, parts and documentation. I bought these manuals shortly before leaving Moog to go back to school to get my E.E. degree. At the time, I'd planned to (someday) go to work repairing electronic musical instruments.

Distco - Goodbye Girl (an 80's-style modular track)

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Distortion Productions

"My fav patch in quite awhile. It developed out of the previous more somber 'Magnesium' patch. I sequenced a much more prominent bassline on the Cwejman VCO-6 with the Erica Synths Sequential Switch V2 + CV Expander and an 80's beat on the Shakmat Four Bricks Rook. Modulating the release on the ADSR-VC2 and cutoff on the MMF-1S with the D-LFO gave the VCO-2RM melody some nice variations on tone and timing.

Lately, I've found that I want to improve a patch and re-record it using one of my nicer cameras and audio interface. But then something drifts, whether it's the timing of the sequencer, the tuning of the oscillator or snare, or the hi-hat is out of sync. I try to bring back the sound of the previous recording, but no matter what I do, I can't get the same feel back. When you're working with electrical voltages, things seem so fleeting. But it all seems to be intrinsic to modular synthesis."

Benge FZ10M

Published on Aug 21, 2018 zack dagoba

"I set up the Casio FZ10-M (an FZ-1 in a rack) and tried to get my head round it. Its certainly not intuitive to use! (common amongst late 80s / 90s systems of this power). Its a pretty interesting prospect once you get used to the menus. Here I am using an additive sine wave oscillator with a slow envelope, and I assigned the mod wheel to control the very nice resonant LPF

I'm using the Sequential Prophet T8 to control it because the wooden keyboard makes the Casio feel more luxurious

ANA by Mystic Circuits

Published on Aug 21, 2018 Mystic Circuits

"At it’s core, Ana is a collection of ring modulators and other signals based on these ring modulators. Two inputs to Ana yield six outputs, each one a different process of these two inputs. By varying one of the front panel controls, all six outputs are changed simultaneously. If you have been looking for a slim, multi-function device to add both utility and a dose of weirdness to your workflow then Ana is the swiss army knife module for you."

Additional details via Mystic Circuits

"ANA is a utility module comprising six functions that combine two inputs. These functions are:

MIN – compute the minimum of the two input voltages

MAX – compute the maximum of the two input voltages

VCA – compute the XOR, or multiplication the two input voltages

MAG – compute the difference between the two input voltages.

STEP – perform a track and hold based smooth/ stepped process from the two inputs

BOX – perform a bipolar comparator process resulting in a 3 level square wave.

New Sumu Synth Coming from Madrona Labs

via the Madrona Labs newsletter:

"Sumu coming.

With the plugin updates completed, I'm now working full-time on the next software instrument, Sumu. It's going to be the last plugin in the patcher-in-the-middle format that Madrona Labs introduced with Aalto way back in 2010. Granular synthesis, as implemented in Kaivo, lets you decompose a sound into vertical segments (grains) each capturing an instant of the whole sound. A sines plus noise decomposition, used in Sumu, is a complementary tool that does very much the opposite, tracking individual sine wave partials of a sound horizontally through time in what's called spectral analysis.

Working with spectral data in a patchable environment has long been limited to the users of more general-purpose tools like Kyma and Max/MSP. With Sumu I'm designing a fixed set of modules that work in harmony together to make spectral sculpting a breeze."

Also:

"Summer Sale!

Greetings from the Pacific Northwest USA where it's summertime, and where the birds are singing a pretty song. Oh wait, that's Mixmaster Morris on in the background. Yes, ambient music of a wide variety of vintages and moods has been keeping things cool for me lately in the Labs and I'd be very pleased to help bring more into existence. Maybe you'd like to make some, using excellent instrument plugins, purchased at a discount? You've come to the right place.

A summer sale is currently in effect, so from now through the end of this month (August, in case you're not keeping track) Aalto, Kaivo and Virta are all 30% off their usual prices. Use the code PARTICLES on the product pages to get your discount. Until August 31.

Software updates.

Updates to all three instruments were sent out last week, and these fix a few long-standing issues that took some serious quality time here to resolve. MIDI and MPE compatibility, alternate scale handling, and a grip of minor UI issues all went under the knife and I hope that the resulting releases will be the most usable and compatible yet. As always, your feedback is welcomed via the forums or directly to support at madronalabs.com.

Because the plugins share so much code under the hood, I decided that a unified version number system makes more sense and so Kaivo and Virta have taken a larger leap to match Aalto at v1.8.3.

Thanks to the very kind help of Kurt and Carla at Symbolic Sound, there is now an update to the Soundplane software that fixes a Kyma connectivity issue. In addition to improving matters for Kyma owners, the change in OSC connection setup will allow playing Aalto or the other instruments on a different computer via Bonjour / Zeroconf. If this idea excites you, please grab the new release from the Soundplane forum and feel free to get in touch with any questions.

In very related news, Kiyoung Lee and Ha-young Park are going to be performing a new piece for Soundplane and Kyma at KISS2018 in Santa Cruz.

Fashion, beep beep.

Did you know there are still Aalto T-shirts? It's a good look for Fall, in my biased opinion."

Bob Moog Foundation Moving to Location of the Future Moogseum

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"August 21, 2018 (Asheville, NC) — Marking its twelfth anniversary, the Bob Moog Foundation has announced it will be moving its headquarters to a new space in the heart of downtown Asheville. The new location at 56 Broadway Street will be home to the Foundation’s operations, and the future home of its long-awaited Moogseum.

The Foundation’s offices will relocate to the new space this October, with monthly events and a pop-up Moogseum store planned shortly thereafter. The Moogseum is expected to open in early 2019.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand our mission through this new public space,” remarked Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Foundation. “The new location will be an ideal venue for inspiring people through our extensive archives and our varied educational initiatives. Both our offices and the Moogseum will benefit greatly from being part of the vibrant downtown Asheville community, and the millions of visitors that it hosts each year. We look forward to enriching Asheville’s cultural offerings by sharing the legacy of Bob Moog with tens of thousands of visitors every year.”

Since its inception 12 years ago, the Bob Moog Foundation has been a force for science education, historical preservation, and creativity. It has inspired over 10,000 elementary school students with the science of sound through its experiential 10-week curriculum, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, as well as preserving thousands of documents, photos, memorabilia, and a vault of vintage instruments. The Foundation has assisted with numerous historical books, including integral contributions to two upcoming biographies about Bob Moog, and played a formative role in creating the upcoming documentary, Electronic Voyager.

'The Moogseum will represent a convergence of the Foundation’s many ongoing projects, as well as opening the door to a wide range of new possibilities,' concluded Moog-Koussa. 'We are truly excited for the opportunity to share the Foundation’s efforts with a wider audience.'

The 56 Broadway location currently houses the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center, which is moving to a new location at 120 College Street."
