Casio VZ-10M - Exploring the Synth and Sounds

Published on Jul 4, 2019 ProckGnosis

"And here is a verrrry long video covering the Casio VZ-10M, including listening to a lot of patch examples, looking at how Casio implemented the phase modulation engine, and looking/listening to the basic waves and some phase-modulated waveforms available for programming.

Organization of the video is as follows:
00:00 - Casio VZ-10M ProckGnosis Theme Song (in 9/8)
00:30 - The Introduction
02:50 - Sound and Commentary
11:47 - How the VZ-10M Makes Noise (big explanation)
18:12 - More Sounds, Less Commentary
28:23 - Phase Modulation Analysis (M1 modulating M2 with different waves)
31:04 - Even More Sounds, Some Commentary

As I say in the video, the Casio VZ-10M has a lot of similarities to the Yamaha DX7, including the synth engine and how the modules are worked with like operators, but it also has some other tricks the DX7 doesn't. This includes having saw waves instead of just sine waves to phase modulate and phase modulate with, as well as being able to ring modulate the partner module.

The synth isn't great, but it is extremely interesting to work with, and it can produce some interesting sounds. When the big brother keyboard (VZ-1) was released in 1988, it was Casio's flagship synth. It's curious why Casio would have opted to produce something that, in so many ways, was similar to the already well-established DX7 and all the variants, and even sounded fairly similar.

I think it would have made more sense to release a "Super CZ" with 16 note polyphony, a phase-distortion engine, and the ability to layer, split, and fade similar to the VZ. It's possible even a "Super CZ" wouldn't have sold though, as it seems folks were just more fascinated by more realistic sounds like those offered by the Roland D-50 (released in 1987) and the Korg M1, also released in 1988 for about the same cost.

As I said in the opening of the video, I think the video could have been better organized, and better split over 2 videos, but I’m running short of time and figured it was better to just get it out."

"Livewire Vulcan Modulator with attached Intellijel Mindmeld companion Eurorack modules. Basically mint!

These are now-unavailable modules in very clean 100% working condition (obtained new from Analog Haven in 2010):

The Vulcan is a dual VC LFO (that can go fair way up into audio range) with individual multiple waveforms and mixed sum, diff etc outputs.

The Mindmeld is a companion module giving frontpanel access to switched (replacing the Vulcan's back-panel jumper options) waveform combos - also allowing you to inject an ext signal into each situation. Also inputs to reset the Vulcan wave periods.

This combo is a nice hands-on path to some exotic looped voltage contours."

Roland VP-330 vs Behringer VC340

Published on Jul 4, 2019 synthlegends

"Comparision of the classic string and vocoder synth from 1979 and the clone form 2019 40 Years later.I compared all functions and tried an A/B test environment, so you can objective decide which synth is for you.I really was surprised, how close the Beringer sounds. But the keyboard qualitiy is poor against Roland.Pricewise the Beringer is incredible. Thanks for visiting me on my channel and watching this video."

Mutable Instruments' Braids - Synthesis Models Series #31

Published on Jul 4, 2019 Omri Cohen

"So this was one of the weirdest patches I've built in a while... Today's model was noise sent to 2 resonators, and this patch was indeed noisy. I've used Garbage In from the KlirrFactory to get the groove going, added the GateSeq from Starling, ran Andromeda through a sequential switch, and ran a few voices through Trummor2, Branches, and Rampage. Yes, it was crazy... But I really like the result :)

Make Noise BnG Shared System Plus/Arp Odyssey - it can't be mine

Published on Jul 4, 2019 Jae Ryan

"I recently bought a REV2 kArp Odyssey FS to go with my shared system. This is the first patch with it!

The kArp isn't in the video but its doing the arpeggiated sequence sorta thing that comes in midway and lasts until the end (via CV/Gate from Rene). I have it running into the CV bus case and then getting processed through all the effect modules with the rest of the shared system.

Morphagene is playing a pad sample I also played in on the kArp.

Stereo mix goes through an OTO BAM and then I destroyed it (ish) using the studer A-800 UAD plug in set up to be very under biased and over driven :)"

"The Analog Four is a 4 voice analog synthesizer with precision digital control. There is a sequencer per voice with total timbral control over each voice individually. It can be used as a poly synth when connected to a keyboard and all the voices can be differently set, allowing for very unique sounding polyphonic playing. This MKI unit is in great shape and includes the power, USB cable, manual, and the original box."

"Sixteen rare, mint condition Roland D-70 Synthesizer RAM sound cards. Nowhere available in this quality and in this condition. Maticulous owner. The insertion of each one magically transforms the keyboard into a new one. Each is like a hard "rack" for additional sounds. I ordered one recently only because I have packed these and could not find it (Voice Crystal 1). I paid $125 for it from Eye and I Productions. Therefore because of the rarity of these (the black one is black for creation of new sound from the keyboard) I am pricing each at $125."

"This is the black version of this synth which is a little harder to come by. All buttons and knobs are working accordingly. The last black key is non responsive. There is an octave shift buttons that can help work around using that last black key. All other keys are work. There is a few minor dings and scratches but overall looks great. Comes with the original power supply. The part that holds the the power supply connection is chipped off on the left. I never have a problem with it turning off unexpectedly. It still stays on really and is really sturdy (please see photos) Really dope sounds and the modulation on this thing is crazy. It has a really easy to use track sequencer too. This is the second one I’ve owned and I don’t want to see it go but I can use the extra cash. Your win my loss..."

Prototype of the motor synth featured.

"Husky Höskulds is an audio engineer who always looks for character in recordings - anything that can make a production unique is met with a smile and a cup of coffee. Speaking of which, Husky is a master of - he is said to be one of the trailblazers who brought great coffee (arguably the most important bit of outboard gear) to studios all over Los Angeles. With his David Lynch roast on the side of the mixing console, he has worked on albums by Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Mike Patton, The Wallflowers and many more, including Norah Jones and Solomon Burke which brought him Grammy awards and nominations. Now his studio in L.A. also features our PLUS and PLASMA Pedals - we can be certain that Husky’s raw and imaginative approach to sound engineering will make the best out of our pedals in a studio setting."

Triaxex Muse driving modular synthesizer.

Published on Jul 4, 2019 otherunicorn

"Messing around with one of the 5 Triadex Muse to synthesizer adapter/converts I have made. The muse is to the left, sitting in front of its case! The converter is to its right. It contains two sections - one that converts the muse output directly to CV for use with 1V/octave synths, and one that allows a user to pick 8 different CVs (frequencies) that are selected by which note the Muse chooses. This allows harmonies, or sequences that are not limited to the 2 octave major scale of the Muse itself, or control of a VCF or VCA.
There are also CV outputs for note-only and octave-only, as well as some inversions, and gate signals, including gate, gate/rest and rest. The CV outputs can be mixed with a root-in CV, and can also be switched to work in a minor scale. The inverted outputs will not reflect the correct scale.
Jumpers on the circuit board allow for some responses to be changed. For example, the four input bits can be inverted, as can the REST output.
Theoretically, this converter can be used to convert the digital outputs of other equipment, if a suitable wiring harness was made, as it is essentially a deluxe CGS Diatonic Converter."
