Why Modular? - Thoughts on Eurorack Vs Standalone Synths

Published on Aug 4, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Warning: Contains talking! This video is intended mostly for those who are curious about, or considering getting into Eurorack Modular. After having a few chats with people on YouTube about modular and conventional synths, I decided to make a video sharing my thoughts and what I like about it.
I've built my channel on the back of self-contained synths, so I appreciate that most of my audience will be more into those kinds of instruments, and I still like them too. However, there are pros and cons of both, so hopefully this video will give people who are unsure of modular something to think about.

All sounds heard in the video are from AJH Synth Eurorack modules. A version without talking will be available on my Patreon page.

If you like my videos, please consider helping me to fund the continuation and development of my channel, by supporting me on Patreon for $1 a month and gaining access to occasional exclusive content, or by purchasing my music on Bandcamp:

NOVATION SUMMIT - HUGE 16 VOICE POLY SYNTH MEETS A TINY LOOPER

Published on Aug 4, 2019 -CALC-

"Summit can sound creamy if you want it to......

I took a punt on a super cheap and incredibly small looper pedal.
It only cost £39 so I figured I'd give it a whirl.

Looping with Summit is fun... I was aiming for a more chilled, less harsh sound ;o).
The Summit is recording into the Donner Tiny Looper from an Aux on the mixing desk and the Compact A Phaser Clone is subtly twisting the loop before it heads out further into more space through a Strymon Big Sky.

The little mixer thingy next to the Compact A clone is a wonderful aux expander built following a random idea in Poznan. Huge thanks to Syntherjack for making a simple throw away comment an incredibly useful 1 in 4 out attenuated splitter."

"A short Sound Demo of Novation Ultranova.

I almost sold my Novation Ultranova. But this synth is too good. It's so easy to build nice sounds using the great Modulation Matrix. You simply don't must think about normal and mainstream Soundediting, away frome the damn analog thing. Start a new patch at scratch. Leave the usual paths."

"This is my second video focusing on using the Dave Smith Mopho with Eurorack. Where the last one was mellow and ambient, this one is much more glitchy and beat-driven. The clocks are synced via MIDI. Basimilus Iteritas Alter and Erica Wavetable VCO are the heart of this patch. It was a first take, but I am happy with the way it came out.

Yamaha Portasound PSS-580 FM keyboard demo - "Limes"

Published on Aug 4, 2019 Alfonse

Yamaha Portasound PSS-580 MusicStation keyboard (1989)
The PSS-580 is a relative of the 480, 680, and 780, with basically all the same chips and most of the same features in common. The 680/780 boast a couple more features, but the editable FM synthesizer parameters are common to all these keyboards, with control from the front panel of the keyboard over attack, decay, frequency, feedback and modulation for 2 operators.

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the PSS-580 and recorded to a DAW, where I added compression, EQ, reverb, delay and chorus as required. I sampled individual drum hits from the percussion section, to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the PSS-580 itself.

The aim of these videos is to see what you can create using sounds from ageing home keyboards together with current production tools.

"It is working 100% and fully functional. Most of these turn up on ebay in terrible condition and usually missing some (if not all) of their slider caps. Look at the pics for its condition. I was shocked when I received it in such good shape and I have taken good care of it. Unfortunately I've run into financial trouble and have to let most of my beloved gear go in order to cover unexpected expenses. My loss is your gain. :-("

"All working as it should apart from two minor but workable quirks. The volume slider if pushed to the left can cut out but this is easily remidied if you hold it to the right when moving it, or if you want to set and forget, stick a bit of card to the left of the knob. The other quirk is that the arp latch button can be temperamental when pressed but then it's an old synth and hasn't caused me any issues when playing it."

Elektron Sidstation Ninja

"If you're clicking you know how rare and desirable these synths are - the all-black Ninja edition of the Sidstation was the most limited production run. They go for a lot - there's currently another "Ninja" on Reverb for $1,886 (+ $125 shipping), so mine is priced to move at $400 less. Only 50 were ever made - unlikely never see another one of these for anything close to this price! Has blue LEDs and looks / sounds awesome.

The Sidstation is the guts of a Commodore 64 with an analog filter and custom software to bring out the power of the original, NOS chipset. Three syncable oscillators produce 8bit waveforms, with wavetables, ring modulation etc. Can make classic video game tones, but can do much more - has a much more raw and powerful sound than a standard analog synth.

Excellent condition sonically and cosmetically. Comes with original power supply, and you can download the manual from Elektron - who went on to make the MachineDrum, Analog Four, Digitakt etc., so they are still going strong."

2019/07 - Sad Anime Jazz

Published on Aug 4, 2019 Stereoping

"A little composition exercise which leaded into sth. like an Anime soundtrack. Imagine a melancholic person sitting by the sea or gazing into a wide landscape in late summer. Simple setup: Kawai K4 (Guitar) and Roland JV-1080 (Piano & Horns). Drums from Alesis HR-16 and a midified Hammond AutoVario 64. Besides rare superimpositions of gear, the Video just contains the progressing FL Studio playlist digging through the midi-clips containing the notes being fired to the synths and drummachines. (In case you wonder... 2-4 notes were changed after recording the screencast) Enjoy :-)"

Modor eurorack module COMB Filter to make chorus and flanger style effects

Published on Aug 4, 2019 Dziam Bass

"Today I have a movie using Comb Filter and Noisy Oscillator from Modor.
I really like the effect of flanger and chorus, but I did not have them in modules so this module can really put in motion and sound it well. a little more impact on the strong effect I gave about 2 minutes.

Comb filter so jets named this filter but based on jets on short delays which just produces these two effects.
A little more accurately about this module
What is a Comb Filter? It is a digital filter. The signal is mixed with a slightly delayed version of the input signal. You will not be able to do it (40ms at max). "Comb Filter" comes from. "The Filter process" is a number of different combinations.

Comb filters are typically used to make chorus and flanger style effects. These effects are created by modulating the delay time. With longer and relatively fast modified delays you receive a chorus effect. With short, slow-motion, modular delays, combined with some feedback.

So, the most interesting parameter in this is the delay time. That determines the frequency of the teeth. So that's why there's a CV control for it. The typical chorus and flanger effects are made by the LFO. So there's a triangle LFO onboard the module, with speed control. If you do not enter any CV in the CV1 connector, it is standardized to this internal LFO to make typical effects. CV2 is standardized to the reverse signal of CV1, to make Modor's typical wide stereo effects, just as on the NF-1 synthesizer. But you can enter your CV in a few words: LFO's, Envelopes or some rhytmically undulating spacy voltage signals ... Check it out!"
