Korg DW-8000 - a great synth for its price

Published on Feb 8, 2020 synthlegends

"The Korg DW-8000 is still a very underrated hybrid synth with wonderful digital waveforms and a warm analog filter. The internal delay really shines.

In this video you can listen classical and user friendly sounds for a band context, like pianos, organs, strings, brass, leads and pads. The DW-8000 does very warm MKS-20 like electronic pianos, realistic organs, wonderful strings like a Juno or JX and oberheimesque brass-sounds. Maybe it is the better Juno (if it were a Roland, not looking so ugly and had knobs it would cost maybe more than 1000 Euro).

I didn't use any effects beside the internal delay, no mastering, eq or plug ins in this video.
Thanks for watching this video. Stay tuned:-)"

"This Moog Satellite Model 5330 is in really great shape cosmetically and functions perfectly. Really hard to find one these days in this condition. The sound is silky smooth, warm and inspiring. You can hear why Vangelis used this, when you get your hands on one and start playing. Comes with a re-printed operational / service manual. Will be packed well with large bubble wrap, memory foam and will be double boxed. This unit runs on US standard 120V, so if you're buying from another country make sure that you have the correct voltage converter to power it with 120V."

This is a ridiculously underrated synth in my opinion. Almost sold mine, but glad I kept it.

"The CS-60 is a uniquely expressive 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer, the little brother of the great CS-80. CS-60 sounds are infinitely variable, with tons of slider controls and touch sensitive keyboard (amazing in the 1970's!), plus a pitch bend ribbon. A classic, playable, organic, warm, liquid sound. See the YouTube link for an excellent demonstration of what CS-60's can do (the video isn't my CS-60, but mine can do everything shown.)

I bought my all-original 1978 CS-60 from the brother of a friend of mine in 1987, and it has been part of my home studio ever since. It is fully functional, though the exterior has some scuffs and marks which were there when I bought it and are detailed in the photos. I'm preparing to play more music on the road, and I want to start over with a more current rig so this one needs to go.

Includes lid, music stand and user manual - all original
Does not include legs/stand
Does not include sustain or expression pedals
Polyphony - 8 voices
Oscillators - 1 VCO per voice (square and saw plus PWM; 1 sub-osc with 4 wave types; noise gen) - one oscillator is slightly out of tune until warmed up
Assignable aftertouch
Memory - 12 presets, 2 user patches (second user patch is under cover on upper left side of panel)"

EMAXII SE SYNTHESIS DISK

Published on Feb 8, 2020 100 Things I Do

"A quick demo of the sounds on one of the E-MU Factory library disk's for the EMU Emax II. I picked up this pretty mint example of the EMAX II recently after looking for one at the right price for the last few years. I took out the original 40mb SCSI drive and replaced it with a SCSI2SD. What a difference it makes loading samples and booting the sampler! It makes the sampler feel very snappy to use and responds very fast. Also you can flick between menus in real time!

One of the small downsides for me at least is the key bed is super light touch which means my rather sloppy playing technique ends up triggering quite a few extra notes as a rest my fingers. Not sure if its been like this since new or just starting to show some age. :D

I hope you enjoy :D"

TM Synthesis FLUX - Temporal Modulation Rhythm Sequencer to Launch on Kickstarter

FLUX Kickstarter Trailer from FLUX on Vimeo.

Visit www.TMsynthesis.com for more info!

via https://www.tmsynthesis.com

"Flux is a Temporal Modulation Synthesis Complex Rhythm Sequencer for Eurorack.

Temporal Modulation Synthesis applies a curvature to time, creating rhythms by modulating the linearity of trigger distribution within a step (each step can output a density of between 1-64 triggers). Trigger distribution can be modulated with a choice of 15 TM curves, the curvature of which ranges from -10 to +10 in 0.01 increments (2000 possible curvatures). Positive curvature values produce logarithmic responses, negative values produce exponential responses and a curvature of 0 results in linear spacing. 16 TM steps can be sequenced per channel, each with unique length, density, curve and curvature parameters. FLUX uses 64-bit double-precision floating point math internally to calculate rhythms with an extremely high degree of precision.

True Euclidean rhythms, polyrhythms & complex rhythmic patterns are extremely easy to generate and wide ranging in scope.

Standalone sequencing with Novation Launchpad Pro MkIII (w/ Micromoog, Echosystem)

Published on Feb 8, 2020 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, using hardware sequencing and one synth plus some software synths. I received the Launchpad Pro MkIII this week and wanted to quickly put it through its paces as a standalone sequencer, so I hooked it up to a few VSTs (mostly free, and listed below), didn't change the key or the tempo, and just went with it. I'm happy to report that the Launchpad Pro absolutely feels like a successor to the Novation Circuit in its fast and intuitive workflow, but with a number of meaningful improvements. (Now Novation just needs to make a proper Novation update!) It's also important to note that the device feels fantastic to the touch and is very responsive. It's just a joy to play with, and I only wish it had more than its four sequencer tracks.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the beautiful synth sitting next to the Launchpad Pro. The Micromoog was manufactured from 1975-1979 and was supposed to be a simple, consumer-friendly entry to Moog's lineup. But despite only having one oscillator (plus sub), it's actually packed with a bunch of features that you won't find on a Model D, like modulation via noise instead of an LFO, a variable wave shape, and pulse width modulation. I normally have a no-buy rule about vintage gear, but I tried this one in a local shop, it was on for a very fair price, and I loved the sound of it.

Launchpad Pro MkIII — Sequencing of four tracks
Moog Micromoog + Empress Effects Echosystem — Drone lead
VST instruments used:
Felt Instruments Wolno (free!) — main piano loop
Spitfire LABS (free!) — random blip, strings, piano
Synapse The Legend — bass

Written and performed within a 48-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Building the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator Modular 400

"Weinglas builds the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator Modular 400. A lot of work, but it was worth it: A good sounding small modular synth with battery power!

The sound track was the first test drive of the synth. No external fx, sequencing or editing. Just the sound of the PO Modular 400 direct to camera.

This is not your usual Weinglas video. No wine, no gloves, only hard work. And it sounds a bit different, too. ;)"

The Galaxy Electric - Buchla Cosmic Drone - Session 11 - Modular Drone Music

Published on Feb 8, 2020 The Galaxy Electric

"Thanks for listening! Come on a musical voyage with us where we'll send you a new song every day, a cosmic story, and a chance to earn space treasure:

https://thegalaxyelectric.lpages.co/5...

Relax and tune into our live weekly improvised Drone Sessions. This 11th session involves a drone featuring two independent Buchla style complex and modulation oscillators starting in tune a couple octaves apart. As the oscillator frequencies drift apart by way of manual control, beating ensues. Listening to droning oscillators can serve as mindfulness sounds as there is no sudden changes in sound. Just smooth drifts in pitch and the resulting beat frequencies. Drones can also serve as an ambient track to have on while doing tasks that require intense focus. Drones are also great for a Sci-fi film soundtrack. The slow yet progressive nature of a drone performance can help one focus on tasks without distraction. The fact that we are manipulating these oscillators live and in collaboration helps the drone meander ever so smoothly in an evolving fashion as we are always reacting to one another's subtle movements. These movements are improvised so there is an unrehearsed and reactive ebb and flow to the tones generated.

The electronic music instruments used in this performance of modular drone music are the Buchla Music Easel, and a small system involving a Buchla clone model 259 Programmable Complex Waveform Generator, Buchla 292h Dual Lowpass Gate, and 281h Dual Function Generator in the Buchla LEM Powered 3 Boat.

"Under the hood, these are actually Korg N5EX synthesizers with a custom keyboard built specially for Tokyo Yusyo (probably also by Korg), with each key being velocity and channel (mono) aftertouch sensitive. Please note that the Chromatone keyboard is not at all like a matrix array or other "microtonal" type keyboard. These are actually 88 key keyboards shoehorned into the form factor for a 61 key keyboard, with each key having multiple key tops for ergonomic play. I used these as MIDI controllers, but you can just as easily tap them for the onboard GS/XG/GM soundset.

I encourage you to visit the maker's websites [here and here] and tour YouTube to understand more about the Chromatone keyboard and the MUTO method for notation and playing these keyboards if you are not already familiar with it. The onboard synthesizer engine, features (e.g., sequencer), and operation are that of the Korg N5EX, so please see the manual for that keyboard (on Korg USA's website here: [link removed by eBay]) since Tokyo Yusyo supplied no additional documentation with these keyboards.

I reiterate: these are not matrix array 'microtonal' keyboards."

Terry Riley - In C - Modular synthesizer performance using a DIY module

Published on Feb 8, 2020 joeSeggiola

"Made in February 2020 with Eurorack modular synthesizer and Minibrute 2.

The system implements five separate synth voices (shortly described further down), plus the eighth note pulse. CV/gate for every voice is provided by a custom-made module powered by Arduino (link below), which is controlled using manual buttons to advance through the 53 melodic patterns of "In C".

https://github.com/joeSeggiola/arduin...

Bass (1) is from Minibrute 2 double VCO, with both on-board VCF and VCA controlled by the on-board ADSR. Mild resonance and Brute Factor are used to shape the tone.

Mid-bass (2) is from MFB OSC-02 third VCO. It is filtered by WMD/SSF Pole Zero with an ADSR envelope from Stages, which is also used to open a VCA in Veils.

Mid (3) is from MFB OSC-02 second VCO. It is filtered by Bastl Cinnamon in band-pass mode, with slight distortion (drive plus character). The AD envelope from Pico MOD modulates the VCF and open the VCA in Veils.

Mid-high (4) is from MFB OSC-02 first VCO. Maths CH1 is used to open the first LPG in LxD, sometimes configured like a normal AD envelope, other times like a ramp LFO. The output signal is sent through Pico DSP for a tempo-synced echo effect.

High (5) is a looping stage from Stages used as a VCO. It is not filtered. The VCA in Veils is controlled by the spare AD envelope on the Minibrute 2. Notes as occasionally randomly skipped filtering gates with a Branches clone module. The output signal is sent through Pico DSP for a tempo-synced echo effect.

The eighth note pulse is ModBox Skew LFO used as a VCO, passing through the resonant LPG in LxD opened with Maths CH4 (which is also used as a master clock signal). The S&H from ModBox is scaled in Stages and used to randomly change the pulse volume in Veils.

The audio mix is sent through a couple pedals for reverb and optical compressor. A stereo-widener VST is used to process the mono signal.
