"Note: Fair warning - I use Eventide Blackhole so if you have problems listening to demos with FX you won't enjoy this one. Secondly, I spend the second half just making patches from scratch. This is quite boring to me, but I left it in, maybe it'll be helpful to you? My hands get in the way though - sorry about that. Anyway, see below:

Sequential In The Spotlight Interview with ROB COTTINGHAM

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"Once described by Geoff Barton of Classic Rock Magazine as “Peterborough’s answer to Vangelis,” Rob Cottingham started his musical career in high school, later forming the rock band Cinema. In the early 90’s, he gigged with an R&B band and formed the cover group, Ghost. Itching to write his own material, Rob produced his first album “Behind The Orchard Tree”(BTOT) released in 2002. From there he founded the group Touchstone, who went on to release one EP, four albums, a double live album and a live DVD. The group hit the UK rock album charts at number 34 in 2011 and number 26 in 2013 after being signed for two albums. The band toured UK, Europe and USA.

In 2016, Rob formed Cairo, keeping the same sensibilities in song craft, but with heavier guitars and more electronica in the sound. Cairo’s debut album “Say” was released to rave reviews, including a recommendation from Steve Hackett of Genesis. The band won Classic Rock Society’s Best Newcomer Award a few months later. Rob released a solo follow up to his earlier album BTOT with “Back Behind the Orchard Tree” in April 2019, and soon after, Cairo released a live album “Alive In Holland” in January 2020. Their next studio album is planned for late 2020.

We chatted with Rob on how he uses the Prophet-6 in his music.

Novation // Patricia Wolf - Performance

Published on Feb 24, 2020 NovationTV

"In this video, filmed at Holocene, Portland, electronic musician, synthesist and sound designer Patricia Wolf performs with SL MkIII at the centre of her setup.

Patricia’s music-making setup comprises several machines: a Novation Peak polysynth; a Boomstar 3003 semi-modular synth; a Make Noise 0-Coast modular synth; an Elektron Analog Rytm drum machine, and OTO BIM and BAM effects units. All her sound-generating devices are connected to a Novation 49 SL MkIII controller by a mixture of MIDI and CV connections. By using templates in the SL MkIII to control multiple parameters across all her devices, Patricia is able to focus her attention on one main control surface — the Novation SL MkIII — while maximising the technological potential of all her synths.

Novation // Patricia Wolf - Profile

Published on Feb 28, 2020 NovationTV

"In this video, Patricia Wolf discusses how she takes a two-stage approach to sound design. “In one way, I focus on the technical aspects of it, especially when there’s new features on a synthesizer that I’m not so familiar with. So I’ll play around with that and really think about what it’s doing.” Then, once she’s familiar with her machines and their respective capabilities, she’ll free herself from thinking on a purely technical point of view and consider her machines as an ecosystem, playing in harmony. 'It’s nice to let go of that technicality and just think of it as a living, electric energy that you can morph and change and start feeling for its creative potential.'"

Vintage Korg MS-20 & MS-50 Synthesizer Jam

Published on Feb 24, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"In this video, we pair a vintage Korg MS-20 and MS-50 with two SQ-1 sequencers to create sequenced bass lines and rhythms. Fully capable synthesizers in their own right, the MS-20 and MS-50 combine to form an even more powerful modular synthesizer capable of everything from generative soundscapes to brutal, heavy-hitting bass tones.

The MS-20 is a semi-modular keyboard synth originally released in 1978. At the time of its introduction, it was one of the most affordable synthesizers altogether—and with its snarling dual filter, external signal processor, and open-ended patch bay, it was destined to be a cult classic. The MS-50 was intended to act as an expander for the MS-20 or other modular systems. Unlike the MS-20, the MS-50 does not feature a normalled internal signal path, instead acting more like a true modular synthesizer. The MS-50 can certainly act as an instrument all on its own (with its own oscillator, filter, envelopes, VCAs, LFOs, and tons of CV utilities)...but when using the two instruments in combination, completely new possibilities emerge.

Duophonic from Monophonic with Beatstep Pro & Dark Energy

Published on Feb 24, 2020 DreamsOfWires

"Just a really simple trick people who are new to analogue synths might want to try. It'll work with any synth that has both a VCF that'll self-oscillate and external control over filter frequency. It'll work best if the filter can track 1v/oct with some stability. Also, you could substitute the Beatstep for another multi-channel CV sequencer or controller, such as a Korg SQ-1 in dual mode.

Basically, on certain filter designs, when resonance is maxed and it's frequency lowered it'll start to produce a simple sine wave (self-oscillation). In many synths this sine wave can be controlled melodically (with varying success), independently of the VCO. Here's how it works in this video:

One sequencer channel's CV output goes to the synth's VCO pitch input, and the other channel's CV out to VCF frequency input. The gate out goes to gate in as usual.

Firstly, get a single note playing and make sure you can hear the VCO, max the resonance, then reduce the filter frequency manually and you'll start to hear the filter self oscillating, which essentially creates a pitched sine wave. Adjust the frequency until it sounds like it is in tune with the VCO. You'll have to experiment with different tunings and octaves of both to get your desired result. Also, experiment with raising the resonance just enough to start self-oscillating, as this should lower the volume of the resonance against the VCO's volume, allowing you to hear both more clearly.

Now you can start knob twiddling on the sequencer, creating separate melodies on both channels, and even have different sequence lengths and time divisions for some polyrhythm fun.

New XOR Electronics NerdSEQ CV16 Expander

Published on Feb 24, 2020 XOR Electronics

"A small promo video about the new 'More CV 16' expander for the NerdSEQ Eurorack sequencer.
It adds 16 more CV outputs which are totally integrated into the sequencer.

The CV outputs can be either pitch or note scaled (in pairs of 0..10 Volt or -5/+5 Volt). Beside being outputs for notes or pitches with glide settings for each output, it also contains several modulators which can be routed to each output (pure or adding to the current voltage):
8 ASR (Attack Sustain Release) Envelopes with Attack, Release and Sustain settings for each Envelope.
8 LFO with the following waveforms: Sinus, Triangle, Sawtooth, Ramp, Noise and Random (randomly mixing through the waveforms).

The modulators can be manipulated in their stage and attributes from each sequencer step. The CV16 expander enhances the NerdSEQ with Polyphonic sequencing and recording within one or multiple tracks.

This is not a standalone product! It works only together with the NerdSEQ.

Huge analog sound with Entropic Doom (Noisillator) module from AJH Synth

Published on Feb 24, 2020 Dziam Bass

"Today I have a small demo in sequence with a huge analog sound from the Entropic Doom (Noisillator) module from AJH Synth.

It is a module that adds noise to the audio. it can also be a source of noise and also a Ring modulator with XOR out.

here a small patch and fun in filtering with noise using Vintage Transistor Core VCO - Minimod and Doom Entropic module from AJH Synth.

The Entropic Doom takes noise and tuned noise to a whole new level, it can almost be described as an oscillator for noise, or Noisillator as we like to call it. Traditionally in modular synthesis we use either white or pink noise and then treat it through envelopes and filters to give various effects, however the Entropic Doom takes modular noise creation to places its never been before!

We have a CMOS Logic Gate based Noise Generator with Coarse and Fine tuning control along with a two, three and four pole low pass filter and a passband resonator within the noise loop itself. We have both Audio and Sync inputs, which can be mixed into the noise loop to add even greater variety to the sounds generated. We have both Bright and Dark Noise outputs, which are pre and post filter respectively, however because the noise and filter are in a feedback loop the Bright output responds to filter type and settings too.

There are CV inputs to allow voltage control of both Frequency and Resonance, and also an all important 1V/Oct input so that we can "play" the noise in tune from a keyboard or sequencer.

In addition we have a separate XOR based Ring Modulator and a Cmos gate based VCA sub modules. These can be used independently from and simultaneously with the Noisillator circuitry."

Introducing Beat Map, the Algorhythmic Drummer (with Mike & Keys)

Published on Feb 24, 2020 Reason Studios

"Beat making and Reason go hand in hand! And today, we are thrilled to announce Beat Map, a brand new Player that will change the way you approach drums. We sat down with Grammy-nominated producers Mike & Keys to talk about Beat Map and here’s what they had to say."

Thought this was interesting from the perspective of creating music by actually listening to the music. It's more capturing moods than playing notes. More of an outside in vs. inside out approach. Kind of like creating patches from an existing patch vs. an initialized patch. There is an art to it.
