The first MIDI sequencer from Roland, Yamaha and Korg | How different they are!

video upload by

"Roland with the MSQ-700 from 1983/1984, Yamaha with the mothership QX1 from 1984 and Korg with the SQD-1 from 1985.

They are very different in both design, functionality and power, but they were the first MIDI sequencer these three companies did."

Circuit Bent Casiotone MT-540

video upload by NOISEBUG

"This circuit bent Casiotone MT-540 will take you to new worlds of creativity and bit crushing madness. Smash some patch cables into the jacks on the front panel and see where it takes you!

This unit has a tempo control function that bypasses the internal tempo, allowing you to slow things down much further than this unit was intended. The 1/4" outputs on the back of the unit are normal to the speakers, allowing you to cut the speaker volume off and use the 1/4" outputs for audio processing."

Fripper Tripper (Frippertronics with synths: DSI/Sequential Pro 2, Lyra-8, Boss RE-20, DD-20)

video upload by thesrabbit

"For Black Friday, I bought myself Boss DD-20 and RE-20 delay pedals specifically for exploring Frippertronics. They showed up yesterday and I promptly recorded my first jam. It starts with a simple 2 oscillator drone from the modular running through a spring reverb tank (1 Eowave Titan and 1 Roland 512 VCO) The melodies consist of different patches that I've made on the Pro 2, which is another recent purchase. A little further along I introduce the Lyra-8 into the mix, because anything experimental should probably include the Lyra. Unfortunately I didn't have its output level up high enough, and you can't really hear it in the repeats, which is a shame. Other than not getting output levels matched ahead of time, I'm pretty pleased with the result. The modular, Pro 2, and Lyra are also running through the Audiothingies Doctor A in parallel, which is set to a long ping pong delay and a very long modulated plate reverb. To add some tape warble, I fed an attenuated LFO from the Roland 540 module into the RE-20's expression pedal input, which adjusts the "twist" parameter. Everything runs through the DD-20 first, which has a delay time of 7.1 seconds and is set to the "modulated" delay type, then from there it runs into the RE-20. I wonder what it would sound like if the signal chain was reversed. I bet one could pull off mellotron strings vibes pretty easily with this setup."

"Banana and 1/4" version of this rare and weird cross point switcher, matrix, sequencer. Great condition and works flawlessly. Used this with CL and VTOL gear and as a bridge to a Moog modular. My system is shrinking and this goes unused. Includes manual and a 5V power supply. I used it with a 9V (center neg) supply, but those always disappeared from the studio.

Electroserf Vacuum Tube Synthesizer Modules

video upload by epeasant

"Introduction to The Electronic Peasant's Electroserf synthesizer modules, based on Russian 1J24b vacuum tubes from the cold war days. These subminiature pentode tubes were used in the early MiG jet fighter radios, at a time when the western world had already changed over to solid state electronics.

These tubes are long obsolete, but available in the surplus market. Their small size, low voltage requirements, and low power heaters make them suitable for synthesizer use, while their low power output, gain and directly-heated cathodes bring their own design challenges."

SND - FB-14 Filter Bank

video upload by NOISEBUG

https://www.noisebug.net/

"The SND Fixed Filterbank FB-14 MkII is a high end filter bank executed in discrete circuit technology. It is a 14 band equalizer with optimized expanded control areas. That means that not only sound corrections and drastic surgery are possible but also impressive enhancements to your sound material.

The control area per frequency band is circa 20 dB, and unusual but musically sense making is the order of filter frequencies in fifth intervals.

The FB-14 is a noble speciality due to its classic class a switching technique; circuitry that has been made by Mr Niessen himself with the upper most precision.

Four transistors are located in the signal path, two of them are germanium-types with tube like overdriving characteristics.

The sound quality of the FB-14 is in no way inferior to its technical qualities and impress deeply in every aspect: Average kick drums become beautifully intense and well rounded; static drone sounds turn into expansive sound landscapes; and nearly every kind of processed sound material glows with an expensive silkyness.

Almost with an added definition and clarity that touches the heights one aims to achieve in the mastering studio.

Not only does it blend perfectly into every mix, it adds a touch of class to the sound.

Incredible is also the use of frequency selective distortion’s with extreme setting possibilities. Even the most brutally distorted drum loops will not be mashed, but always sound nicely overdriven as well as being superbly eq’d.

Features:

14 Bands with frequencies 35, 65, 105, 160, 240, 360, 540, 800, 1200, 1800, 2700, 4000, 7000 and 12000 Hz (Fith Intervals)
A 2-Pole filter with control area +/-20dB(!) per band, Q-Factor around 0,7 at +/-10dB and 6 at +/-20dB
Level Regulator in Input- and Output
Input Amplification Adjustable between +/-20dB
Bypass switch on the front side"

Five Polysynths - Which Should You Buy?

video upload by Alex Ball

"To answer the many questions I get about these specific modern polysynths I've decided to cover it off in a massive video. Hopefully this clears up which synth is or isn't the one for you!

All sounds are presented "raw" meaning that only FX from the synths themselves were used (if they have them) and that there was no processing of the audio afterwards. What you hear is what the synths sound like.

3. Kurstin x Grohl: The Hanukkah Sessions 2021: Night Two
Once upon a time, two nice Jewish boys from Queens named Jeffery Hyman and Thomas Erdelyi changed the world forever with their music….. as Joey and Tommy Ramone! GABBAI GABBAI HEY! Ladies and gentlemen….It’s the Ramones! Blitzkreig Bop!
4. Kurstin x Grohl: The Hanukkah Sessions 2021: Night One
Welcome back to the menorah, y’all. Let’s kick it this year’s Hanukkah sessions with one of Dallas, Texas’s favorite Jewish daughters. So put on your coffee shop spectacles and your Betsey Johnson dress and HAVA listen to this… "Stay” by Lisa Loeb.
5. Kurstin x Grohl: The Hanukkah Sessions 2021: Night Five (Featuring Violet Grohl)

More than meets the eye // Modbap OSIRIS // review and walkthrough

video upload by Starsky Carr

"Here's my review demo and walkthrough of the Modbap Osiris. Its a really flexibly and interesting digital oscillator that's described as bi-fidelity. It has a 32x32 matrix of waveforms they call a wavepak. Very cool, plus a sub with independent tuning and timbre modes for tonnes of variation: sync, dual oscillators, FM, wave shaping etc, On top of that it has subtle to complete decimation with the fidelity knob.. inspired by the Commodore 64 :)"

Loop singing and drumming: Soma Enner live west coast avant-garde synthesizer electronic music

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"Here is another performance video using the Soma Laboratory Enner instrument, designed by Sistor. My goal for this was to make kind of a tribal ambient sound using my voice into the piezo pickup and by layering non metered finger drumming with a looper pedal, and then morphing into a meditative bass and synth sound. This synth is very geared towards both drones and rhythms, as well as using the piezo pickup with the case, spring, and rubber bands to make added percussive sounds. I'm very excited to continue exploring and find even more sounds. I'm making use of the resonance of the case to layer in my voice and finger drums. Later I fade to a drone layer with rhythm from the click part of the synthesizer. This synth is patched using touch, and I love the idea of having an instrument that I can use my hands on to create sound and have a direct connection to the music. I am using the west coast technique of starting with something and spinning it out like a centrifuge. I'm processing the sound through an Eventide H9 pedal with some reverb and a Boss RC-5 looper pedal. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Waldorf M Presets by Sonic Freaks

videos upload by Sonic Freaks

"We are proud to present our two new preset libraries for the Waldorf M. For the first library we designed 64 MODERN presets that take advantage of the new features of the Waldorf M. This library also contains beautiful strings, evolving pads with beautiful textures and details, subtle and extreme pluck sounds, basses, leads, bells and much more. Also note the new sounds that use the digital filter derived from the Waldorf XT.

The second library are 64 CLASSIC presets from our original Waldorf Microwave presets that we have accurately converted to the Waldorf M. Expect the same beautiful strings, evolving pads, fat bass and crystal clear bells from our Waldorf Microwave Library.

We also combined these two libraries into one big library of 128 presets called COMPLETE and is available with 20% discount.

• We recorded the Waldorf M directly into Logic Pro X via a Antelope Audio Orion 32 Gen 3. No reverb was added.
• The Waldorf M we used had firmware 1.06.
• For drums we used a Roland TR-808 vintage drum machine.

We like to thank Waldorf Music and especially Vladimir for providing us with a Waldorf M for converting these presets.

Please visit our website for more details: https://sonicfreaks.com"

V.A.I. : CRB Oberon / CRB String Machine

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Another video of the glorious CRB Oberon, a unicorn of a monophonic synth made in Italy in the late 70s.
We wanted to sample the more odd side of the machine, bringing out unusual, harsh and bright sounds.
Sorry for the sloppy playing, we’re not keyboard players and the action on this machine is frankly pretty terrible, we need to take a look at that in a near future.
The grey string machine is also marked CRB - a simple, two sounds (violin and cello) string machine, unusually light weight for the oldie it is.
We’re really digging it for that factor, as well as its sound - not at all bad.
We’ll be looking into a few other rare CRB machines soon, so please subscribe and follow us on Instagram for gear sales."

Door #2: Bald nun ist Weihnachtszeit (It's Christmas time soon) - Synthmas '21

video upload by

First Synthmas post of the year.

"Ho-Ho-Ho! This is Synthmas '21, the virtual calendar presenting a Christmas carol played by synthesizers - every day from 1st to 24th of December.

Door #2: Bald nun ist Weihnachtszeit (It's Christmas time soon)

The song:
'Bald nun ist Weihnachtszeit' is a German Christmas carol from around 1940 written by Karola Wilke (lyrics) and Wolfgang Stumme (melody). Unlike most christmas songs the lyrics have no spiritual relation thus it was willingly played in the former eastern part of Germany (GDR). In the GDR Christmas was celebrated in like manner as in the western part, but the govenment diminished the Christian context or at least they tried.

The gear:
The song is played by two Waldorf synths, Blofeld and Streichfett. Waldorf Blofeld is a digital synth with 3 oscillators, each capable playing square (pulse), sawtooth, triangle and sine wave. Oscillator 1+2 additionally can play wavetables so Blofeld follows the footsteps of the legendary PPG synths or Waldorf Microwave. The synth has many modulation sources, different filter types, complex envelopes and an effect section.

Blofeld plays the bass in this song, lead voice is played by Streichfett. The digital synth imitates the typical sound of 70s string machines. It has - like many of its ancestors - a string and a synth section. Along with different wave forms that can be switched seamlessly the 3-mode chorus is a key for shaping the string machine sound. There is also a phaser effect trying to act like a Smallstone; well it doesn't at all. Someone wrote in a review that you always get a good sounding patch, whatever parameter settings you set and I can completely agree.
