Vermona PerFourMer MkII - Stealth Black Edition

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Even with your favorite synth there's got to be something to gripe about. With the Vermona PerFourMer MkII I couldn't get over the brown knobs, so I replaced all 75 with black knobs. Since the Vermona already has a beautiful black faceplate that means it's now the 'stealth edition'. And any 'stealth edition' synth obviously sounds different from a standard issue machine! So here it is grinding and howling along with guest spots from a Zen delay :)

Roland FANTOM 3.0 - n/zyme Model Expansion w/ Wavetable Synthesis

video upload by gattobus

"Roland announces the n/zyme Model Expansion for the FANTOM synthesizer series.
n/zyme is a thoroughly modern instrument with an innovative new synth engine. Featuring wavetable oscillators, wave drawing tools, phase and shape modulation, resonant filters, and two powerful step LFOs, n/zyme is a sound designer's dream, an incredible tool for sound exploration, making FANTOM the most powerful hardware synthesizer on earth. I had the incredible honour to be involved in its development programming some of the factory patches. This video that I created will give you some hints about the huge possibilities that FANTOM can offer, using multiple instances of the n/zyme engine simultaneously. Everything you hear in this video was played in real time, no overdubs! n/zyme is available via a Lifetime Key purchase through Roland Cloud. Support for n/zyme is included with the free Version 3.0 update for the FANTOM 6, FANTOM 7, and FANTOM 8 keyboards."

And the press release:

"Innovative New Synthesizer Engine Brings Fresh Creative Power to FANTOM Keyboards

Los Angeles, CA, January 20, 2022 — Roland announces the n/zyme Model Expansion for the FANTOM synthesizer series, the latest addition to the acclaimed ZEN-Core Model Expansion lineup. Built for hands-on sound design, n/zyme is a thoroughly modern instrument with an innovative new synth engine from Roland. Offering layered wavetable oscillators, phase and shape modulation, resonant filters, and two powerful step LFOs, n/zyme is a highly interactive music tool that brings a new dimension of creative power to all FANTOM owners.

Wavetable-based synths are famous for their distinctive sound, but many can be hard to program. FANTOM’s hi-res touchscreen and physical controls change all that, making n/zyme a fun, tactile instrument that inspires players to take their music into uncharted sonic territory. In contrast with basic synthesizer waveforms, wavetable oscillators employ multiple waveforms, and it’s possible to jump or morph between them for everything from dramatic shifts to slowly evolving soundscapes. With the ability to mix two layers with 63 wavetables each and adjust their positions in real time, n/zyme makes it easy for creators to develop complex textures in the heat of the moment.

Players can physically shape the sound of n/zyme by drawing custom waveforms right on FANTOM’s touchscreen, and then tweak them using a range of powerful modulation tools. It’s also possible to manipulate sounds with an X/Y pad on the touchscreen, complete with automation support and tempo-synced control over speed, intensity, and more.

Two onboard Step LFOs feature 16 tempo-synced steps and 37 different shapes per step. There’s also a Step Kick Switch to add percussive attack for deeply rhythmic sounds and phrases. Going further, users can process n/zyme’s futuristic oscillators with FANTOM’s eight onboard filter types, including detailed models of vintage analog designs.

With FANTOM’s massive DSP power, players can layer multiple n/zymes for ultra-deep tones with sophisticated movement. It’s also possible to mix n/zyme with classic Roland synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and vocoders to craft sounds never heard before.

n/zyme is the latest in a growing lineup of Model Expansions for ZEN-Core instruments and is available via a Lifetime Key purchase through Roland Cloud. Support for n/zyme is included with the free Version 3.0 update for the FANTOM 6, FANTOM 7, and FANTOM 8 keyboards.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland n/zyme Model Expansion for the FANTOM synthesizer series is available now as a Lifetime Key for $149 through Roland Cloud."

Roland Boutique A01 Song - 4 instances of 8 bit synth with Ableton Live for Jamuary 20 2022

video upload by Expanding Sound

"I did one of these last year for this Jamuary challenge as well and remembered how much I enjoyed it. The A01 is a capable controller but I get the most use out of it for its synthesizer inside. Mostly because I hate the small keys for the boutiques. Honestly they're useless if you wanna do anything more than single note melodies. So I used 4 tracks of A01's 8 bit synth in Ableton To make this jam. Hope ya like it!"

New Website Dedicated to the Ondioline

Gotye wrote in to let us know he has been working on a site dedicated to the Ondioline. You might recall he released Jean-Jacques Perrey et son Ondioline on digital and deluxe vinyl on Bandcamp. You can find the new website at https://ondioline.com. The site hosts music releases that feature the Ondioline, recreated Ondioline booklets in English and in French, and of course extensive history on the Ondioline.

The following is a short blurb from the about page:

"The Ondioline is an electronic musical instrument invented by Georges Jenny in France in the early 1940s and developed through a number of different models until his death in 1975. This versatile and expressive instrument is monophonic, but can produce a remarkable variety of sounds, from simulating orchestral instruments to creating unique and voice-like tones...

Since 2016 the musician Gotye has worked to revive interest in the Ondioline through the non-profit Forgotten Futures and with an ensemble called Ondioline Orchestra that performs tributes to Jean-Jacques Perrey’s music.

This work has been enabled by electronics technicians Stephen Masucci (USA) and Daniel Kitzig (Germany) who have undertaken extensive and faithful restorations of numerous Ondiolines, allowing Georges Jenny’s pioneering instruments to make music again after decades of dormancy.

Forgotten Futures is dedicated to the recovery of Jenny’s under-recognized work, the recreation of critical Ondioline spare parts, and the dissemination of information that will ensure the functionality and accessibility of these remarkable instruments for future generations."

See https://ondioline.com/about/#history for more, and be sure to check out the rest of the site.

S900 - This made Akai the KINGS of sampling

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Akai S900 from 1986. A 12-bit sampler, 63 sec sampling time and a very (for the time) easy and fast operating system. The S900 made Akai the kings of sampling and soon total domination.

The easy and fast (compared to other models form other companies) operating system, a very favorable price around £1699 and lots of other features made this the object of desire for a lot of people.
The S900 (and 950) has a massive cult status today and people are still using these for their sound, especially for their grungy time-stretching abilities, resampling and manipulations.
In the mid 80s, this was also used for glossy pop as the S900 had 8 individual outputs so it was a perfect drum sampler. With a growing popularity it soon dominated the world of sampling and Akai would continue their climb to the throne. Any other brand getting in on the sampling market lived in the shadow of Akai as Akai was the sampling standard anyone else had to obey. Those who didn't would soon quit the sampling business all together.

The demo track is made using only samples from the S900 of course. Many of the sounds are sampled from my own synths and drum machines."

The easy-to-read LCD display and intuitive controls give you everything you need to perform and create. Use the pitch bend wheel and modulation knob to add natural (or supernatural) expression to your playing, and use the two assignable knobs to tweak EQ, filter, effects and many other settings on the fly.

The heart of a champion
Casio's AiX Sound Source delivers sound quality that you'd expect from a keyboard costing hundreds, if not thousands more. Power on CT-S1000V and you'll be presented with a dynamic, expressive German concert grand piano placed in a virtual concert hall. The huge collection of 800 Tones also has stellar examples of electric pianos, organs, strings, synths and so much more, with Advanced Tones adding complex layers that react to your playing. A collection of vintage keyboard sounds is also included, featuring recreations of timeless, sought-after keyboard instruments, even classic Casio sounds from its VL, VZ and CZ series.

A world of music to explore
CT-S1000V's 243 full-accompaniment Rhythms make it a perfect jamming partner. Simply play a few notes and it creates an entire backing band that reacts effortlessly to the way you play. The variety of Rhythms spans the globe as well as the history of recorded music, so no matter what kind of mood you're in, your Casiotone is always ready to back you up with vibrant acoustic drums, vintage drum machines, global percussion instruments, rock-solid basslines, horn ensembles, rhythm guitars and much more.

Small size, huge sound
There are four ways to experience CT-S1000V's amazing sound quality at its best. First, the bass-ported stereo speaker system delivers eyebrow-raising punch and clarity throughout the entire volume range. Second, plug in a good set of headphones for personal play. Third, connect the 1/4" line outputs to any amplifier, PA system or mixer. Fourth, push the SURROUND button and the speakers will place you right in the middle of your music.

Production power
Make the world your instrument by using the built-in audio sampler to create custom Tones and drum kits. You can even sample from incoming Bluetooth audio. A 6-track sequencer is always on hand to capture and build your creations.

Free play enabled
Casiotone CT-S1000V fits perfectly into your everyday life. It's also gig-ready, with 1/4" line outputs to connect to amps and PA systems. If you're tired of being tied down, just put in 6 AA batteries, attach a strap and play anywhere. Use the included WU-BT10 Bluetooth MIDI/audio adapter to control other gear remotely, giving you the freedom to take center stage.

Own your sound
CT-S1000V makes it easy to create your own signature sounds. You can layer, split and customize the versatile DSP effects, then save your setups as Registrations for easy recall at the touch of a button.

Connected to your world
The microUSB port connects your CT-S1000V to any Mac, PC, iOS or Android device with no drivers or installation needed. Use the free Casio Music Space app for iOS/Android to learn to learn MIDI songs, play and extract chords from audio files, view PDF scores and more. Sequential OB-6 Preset Patches Sounds Demo No Talking

video upload by Pure Ambient Drone

"The OB-6® is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between the two most influential designers in poly synth history, Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim. The OB-6 takes the classic bold Tom Oberheim sound — with its true voltage-controlled oscillators, 2-pole filter, and amplifiers — and adds modern enhancements such as studio-quality effects, a polyphonic step sequencer, an arpeggiator, and more. No other modern analog poly synth can boast such a pedigree or such a massive, in-your-face sonic signature."

"This a a fully restored and serviced OB8. The service was completed by Ben Watcher of Odd Frequency (Nashville, Tn). MIDI mod has been added and works beautifully. The work is guaranteed through November 2022.

This is an early version of the unit that didn’t have the “Page Two” functions screen printed on the panel, so the tech labeled them for ease-of-use and testing. They’re easily removed, but I found them useful for remembering what lived where.

It is in very good condition and sounds absolutely gorgeous. I played it for hours when I picked it up from the tech.

It is a legend for a reason. Even without effects it has a full and rich sound. Send it through some reverb and delay and you will not be able to stop smiling.

Details of service below:

Action Performed / Recommended:
- Cleaned unit and performed initial calibration
- Noted failed "Keyboard Lower" LED
- Noted failed Filter Envelope on Voice 3
- Resolved Filter Envelope by replacing U311 (CEM3310) with AS3310 (modern replicant based on original)

- Completed recommend full replacement of capacitors
- Modifications to improve power supply and voice boards
- Rebushing and rebuild of keybed
- Battery replacement OR elimination kit
- MIDI kit and install

- Complete rebuild and re-bushing of keybed
- Full replacement of capacitors and voice board upgrade
- Battery elimination kit install
- MIDI kit and installation
- Complete calibration and troubleshoot

Notes during restoration:

- Dated the keyboard production date between January 17-23, 1983
- Many of the factory modifications had been performed already and I completed those that had not
- The later models of OB-8 had a different VCA. This unit has the CEM3360s.
- There were several CMOS ICs that had failed causing erratic behavior.
- Had to build a new cable and replace the ribbon cable between the Processor and Voice boards
- Later OB-8s had a different screen print, which showed Page 2 functions. I used a label maker to indicate these features
- Fully confirmed Page 2 functions"
