The NOISE Genre - Music or Bullsh*t?

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Definitely not Bullshit!

On Sunday, October 16 2022, @Modular World will host the Patch On - Noise Challenge where 30 artists are going to prove that 'noise music' is fun. For most of us, 'noise music' is a never ending blast of extreme distortion and feedback, played as loud as possible. Many of us will feel it doesn't even qualify as music. However, according to Wikipedia, it's defined as 'expressive use of noise in a musical context, where conventional use of melody, harmony and rhythm is abandoned. I'd say a typical Krell patch already qualifies for this. I'll be joining the 30 people on the Noise Challenge event, so I had to do some research. I think the modular community is very comfortable with making noise in general, I am sure we're all patching really weird stuff from time to time. So in this video I am going to share my progress and some background info. Hopefully I'll read some of you in the chat on October 16"

Critter & Guitari - Namesake for Organelle

video upload by Critter & Guitari

"Download this patch here: https://www.critterandguitari.com/org...
Namesake is an organ for the Organelle. It's controlled by nine ‘Drawbars’ on the Organelle’s screen. Select a drawbar and set its volume and waveform. Shape notes on the ADSR page. Use ‘Displace’ to hear the upper drawbars attack and release at a faster rate than the lower ones. There’s also a fun tremolo effect and transpose knob. Namesake’s drawbars can be ‘drawn’ with MIDI! Plug in a midi control surface for unique control of this synth."

Novation Celebrates 30 Years with Giveaways and More

video upload by NovationTV

"It’s been 30 years of Novation and music made with bass, beats and synthesisers.

From early beginnings in 1992, Novation has been a pioneer in developing music technology, allowing artists to create decade-defining sounds. Starting as Novation Electronic Music Systems, we built a small but innovative device, the MM10, which let you control a MIDI sequencer, the Yamaha QY10, for the very first time from a keyboard.

Since then, our synths, MIDI controllers, grooveboxes and more have helped people create, play and perform at all stages of their music-making journey.

From all of us at team Novation – we want to wish a huge thank you to our whole community for keeping us inspired. We can't wait to hear what you make next, and we look forward to another 30 years.

"Novation looks back on three decades of bass, beats and synthesizers.

Since 1992, Novation’s synths, MIDI controllers, grooveboxes and more have helped people create, play and perform at all stages of their music-making journey.

In 1992, Novation developed the MM10, an innovative MIDI sequencer that controlled the Yamaha QY10 from a keyboard, revolutionising the way we make music as the first MIDI controller of its kind. Bass Station’s arrival in 1993 pushed them further into the spotlight as a standout synth of the ‘90s. Developed by none other than synth designer Chris Huggett, his expertise with analogue and digital synth design influenced many of their iconic synths including Supernova, Bass Station II, Summit and Peak.

Over the years, Novation’s instruments have brought new life to music-making, including the Launchpad range which changed the game for grid-based music production and DIY performance, Circuit’s much-loved intuitive approach to beatmaking and sampling, and the award-winning Launchkey range of MIDI controllers used by artists in many genres.

In 2022, they’re celebrating 30 years of music, pioneering music technology and people that made Novation what it is today.

OBERHEIM OB-X8 - Sounds, Patches & Presets | Synth Demo

video upload by synth4ever

"Oberheim OB-X8 synth demo featuring sounds, patches and presets. In this Oberheim OBX8 demo I showcase the new OB-X8 analog synth from Oberheim and demo a variety of sounds including pads, brass, plucks, arps, bass and more. Filmed at Sequential headquarters in San Francisco.

The Oberheim OB-X8 is a monster analog synth featuring 2 disecrete SEM/OB-X-lineage VCOs per voice. It has 8 voices, 2 oscillators (saw, square/pulse, triangle), noise, SEM and Curtis filters, bi-timbrality, LFOs, arpeggiator, 2 envelopes, velocity sensitivity, channel aftertouch, cross-modulation, portamento, unison, osc sync and more.

The Oberheim OB-X8 combines numerous vintage Oberheim models into a single unit including the OB-X, OB-Xa, OB-8 and OB-SX. The Oberheim OBX8 can put out massive and powerful sounds with huge low-end, creamy filter sweeps and bright and biting tones. It sounds fantastic for pads especially thanks to its wide stereo imaging.

I had the opportunity to try the Oberheim OB-X8 during a trip to San Francisco and visit to Sequential headquarters. It is very impressive in size and sound, and is truly an analog behemoth. If you're after the Oberheim sound, the OB-X8 is amazing. Hope you enjoy this demo of the Oberheim OBX8, I certainly enjoyed my time with it."

Time and Space by Jay Wires

You can find the release on various platforms on Distrokid here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jaywires/time-and-space

"‘Time And Space’ is the second single from Jay Wires.

‘Time And Space’ follows the debut Jay Wires single, ‘Candle In The Night’, and continues a story that began there. Filled with frank honesty, longing and unrequited caring, ‘Time And Space’ was written after an argument between Jay Wires and his ex-girlfriend. “We approached arguments differently,” he reflects. “My solution to arguments was always to talk things out as soon as possible in order to move past them, whereas hers was needing to be alone, taking time and space before coming back.” The song was written during one of those periods of post-argument separation.

In spite of its lyrical themes, ‘Time And Space’ highlights Jay Wires’ knack for creating towering, ascendant intricately-detailed electronic pop tracks, full of personal emotion and reference points. “The argument happened in December 2019,” remembers Jay Wires. “That month, we saw a live jazz band perform songs from the ‘Charlie Brown Christmas Special’ soundtrack in a hotel lounge in Williamsburg. For the instrumental break, I created the sound of brushed cymbals to capture the atmosphere of that performance.” ‘Time And Space’ concludes with a powerful, stirring, uplifting synth-orchestral segment, offering a fragile sense of optimism that this was just a temporary parting, not something more permanent.

‘Time And Space’ is the second song to be taken from the debut Jay Wires EP, ‘Kaboom!’.

Jay Wires testing the Korg ARP 2600m

video upload by Jay Wires

"Tone Tweakers just got a shipment of Korg ARP 2600ms in. We’ve got a couple real vintage ARP 2600s in the studio (and in inventory), but this new clone is pretty cool. It’s not quite the same, but it sounds great regardless. Plus, it’s tiny and super cute. We sold out fast, but this one was purchased for the studio and we won’t have time to use it for a few months, so if anyone wants one here in the US, get in touch via the website. For sale or swap for cool vintage gear. Thanks for reading and listening."

United Plugins Announces Availability of JMG Sound Cryostasis SPECTRAL INERTIA Effect

video upload by United Plugins

Press release follows:

United Plugins announces availability of JMG Sound Cryostasis SPECTRAL INERTIA effect enabling progressive audio smearing until infinitely frozen in time

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: independent development teams federation United Plugins is proud to announce availability of founding partner JMG Sound’s highly-creative Cryostasis plug-in — an appropriately-named SPECTRAL INERTIA effect enabling progressive smearing any audio of until it is infinitely frozen in time, thanks to spectral effects and controls that shape the character of the frozen tail to blur audio into atmospheric soundscapes — as of October 6…

Cryostasis itself is defined as being the reversible cryopreservation of live biological objects; on the face of it, then, it is also an appropriate name for an effect plug-in placing music into a state of inertia — if it is possible to imagine such a thing. Thankfully, the imaginative team at JMG Sound have come up with a spectral freeze effect called Cryostasis to do just that, so users can concentrate on taking their music into a different direction, both speedily and easily, thanks to its spectral effects and controls that shape the character of the frozen tail to blur audio into atmospheric soundscapes. All are controlled by a continuously variable ‘freeze’ knob or an auto switch that can be timed in milliseconds or musical measures. Manually control the freezing process with the aforesaid knob or tell Cryostasis how quickly to take the sound from normal to frozen, in other words.

What is more, though, is that there is more to the superficially simple-looking Cryostasis plug-in than might first meet the eye. Examples of this include the SIZE parameter, which will change the time length of the spectral window, which will in itself completely change the sonic character — lower values sound unnatural and robotic, while higher values sound smoother and atmospheric. And balancing out the easy-on-the-eye GUI (Graphical User Interface) is WASH, which controls the amount of reverb that is used to diffuse and smoothen the ‘freeze’ effect into a lush and smoothly modulated reverb tail. Try creating spaced-out ambience and soundscapes that dissolve into the ether — surely sweet (ambient) dreams are made of this, while it can even be used as a sound design tool to create frozen vocal loops to load into a sampler!

Saying that, users can quickly fine-tune the resulting frozen sound colour with four filter controls — PITCH (controls the depth of pitch shift scaled by the ‘freeze’ control, with a range of -24 to +24 semitones); FILTER (controls the HP — high-pass — and LP — low-pass — filtering depth scaled by the ‘freeze’ control); LOFI (controls the amount of BITS and RATE reduction scaled by the ‘freeze’ control); and SHIFT (controls the frequency shifting scaled by the ‘freeze’ control, with a range of -1kHz to +1kHz) — to achieve even more unique results. Creatively coupling that LOFI magic with lower SIZE values makes creating dirty robotic glitches to washed-out dusty soundscapes a breeze. It is also possible to create a tape-stop-type effect — whereby the sound appears to slow down over time until it is completely frozen forever — by coupling the ‘freeze’ effect with the built-in PITCH shifter.

And as if that was not enough to get Cryostasis users shaking with excitement — and hopefully not from an energy crisis-induced cold when working with Cryostasis in colder climes, it is well worth noting that it also has continuously variable freeze functionality — unlike most other freeze plug-ins, so users can smoothly transition between freeze states, or even partially freeze to create time-smearing effects.

As always, JMG Sound’s highly-creative Cryostasis plug-in shares several admirable attributes with fellow family members now numbering 26 plug-ins, each playing their part in United Plugins’ proliferating product portfolio, providing maximum audio quality by using internal 64-bit audio processing as well as being able to handle any sampling rate — why not try it at 192 kHz (or even higher)? — and also the fact that it intelligently detects whether it makes sense to perform any processing at all; if not, it temporarily turns on sleep mode, meaning it requires virtually no CPU power at all, thereby saving computing resources for other processes. Putting a photorealistic 3D yet flexible GUI to the test with Cryostasis, likewise, leaves its users with the impression that they are working with real world hardware; however, it easily adapts to their needs since they can always drag the arrow at the bottom-right corner to change its size — smaller to save precious ‘screen estate’ or larger to make it easier on the eye and, as a result, even easier to use than it already is.

It is fair to say, then, that there are (almost) endless possibilities for Cryostasis users to craft creative transitions that are applicable to single tracks or whole songs in the studio or on stage. Surely getting frozen has never been so much fun — or so quickly reversible!

JMG Sound’s Cryostasis is available to purchase for a time-limited introductory promo price of only €19.00 EUR until November 13, 2022 — rising thereafter to its regular price of €79.00 EUR — as an AAX-, AU-, VST-, and VST3-compatible plug-in (using internal 64-bit audio processing capable of handling any sample rate) directly from its dedicated webpage (https://unitedplugins.com/Cryostasis/), where a 15-day, fully-functional trial version for macOS 10.10 and newer and Windows 8/10 can also be downloaded for free.

Note that no iLok, dongle, or internet access is required for Cryostasis activation. (All United Plugins software uses license files for activation and owners can freely use purchased software on all their computers as long as they are the user.)

Moog Matriarch: 50 Patches for Arps/Seqs & Generative-Style

video upload by Anton Anru

"Welcome to the soundset for a semi-modular synth Moog Matriarch.
'Round Robin' is a collection of 50 presets for Arpeggios and Sequences. The bank covers a wide range of tones: warm, deep, bright, metallic, mallet, soft, expressive, dreamy, dark, evolving, detuned, inharmonic, noisy, distorted and others.
📕 Get the soundset: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/moog/

The presets vary greatly from the point of view of complexity: some are simpler and will work in any track and genre, some are experimental and will make your tracks sound unique.

The collection also includes generative-style patches, they have complex modulations and movement, they have long and shorts steps, dark and bright tones, they have tempo variation, unexpected and unpredictable splashes of sound...

Generative patch may be a good addition to (or a lead part of) ambient or techno tracks, jams and performances. You may also record fragments into your DAW or sampler, slice it to one-shots or make loops - you’ll get a unique material for further processing.

It is supposed that the internal Matriarch Arp/Seq should be used for these presets. Choose Arp or Seq mode (record a pattern), push/hold the keys and have fun tweaking the parameters. All my audio examples were made with the built-in Arp/Seq. Some presets use Arp/Seq Rate modulation. In this case, using the internal Arp/Seq is obligatory.

Of course, you may also try playing the keys (with Arp/Seq off) or use an external sequencer/DAW.

Matriarch has great tools for stereo sound: two filters, independent VCAs, BBD Delay. I modulated them a lot to create wide and beautiful patches, that can be hardly recreated on other hardware (especially analog) synths. Matriarch has an absolutely fantastic feature set and I tried to intensively use it to create exclusive timbres.

The soundset is presented in the form of PDF-Document. Each page contains notes that explain how the patch works, what parameters worth tweaking during the playback, how to develop the timbre during a performance. If you make all the settings consciously and try the things mentioned in the notes, you will learn many things about the synth and discover its true depth.

Each patch has an audio example, it helps to understand how a patch is supposed to sound. No external effects on the examples, Matriarch Delay only.

To recreate these presets, you need up 16 patch cords, including long ones.

You should have firmware v1.2.3 or higher for full compatibility with my presets.

AJH Synth Official GEMINI 2412 User Guide posts

"Part 3 of 3. The AJH Synth Gemini 2412 Dual Multi-mode SEM-based VCF explained. The 3-part User Guide will cover this very complex and fully-featured, yet simple to use analogue filter. This final part shows how the functions explained in parts 1 and 2 can be used with both filters working together, with particular attention to creating a 24dB low pass filter, and a 12dB band pass filter, using the Gemini as a single filter in cascade mode. Also, creating formant, or vocal type sounds, evolving patches using an envelope to morph between the output of both filters, then finishing off with various no-talking patch examples, such as using the Gemini as a stereo filter, as part of a 2-voice polyphonic synth, and constantly changing sequencer patterns."

"Here we have a very early version of the infamous VCS-3, also known as 'The Putney'. These units were handcrafted in London, England in the late 60's/early 70s by Electronic Music Studios.

This particular model includes the matching keyboard and ultra rare E.M.S. Random Voltage Generator box (Model No. 560/5). The generator does exactly what you'd expect it to do (generates voltages at variable random times).

Recently calibrated along with a power supply recap.

The VCS-3 has been favored by countless artists/producers worldwide for a good reason! (Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Stereolab, Yes, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Depeche Mode, The Who and more).

VCS-3 (serial no. 320)
The CRICKLEWOOD VCS-3 Keyboard (serial no. 3328)
Random Voltage Generator (serial no. 5214)
Includes original keyboard connecting cable and AC power plug."

Crumar Multiman S/2 - Rare String Synthesizer SN 01349

"A perfect working Crumar Multiman S/2, the very hard to find vintage string synthesizer designed as the successor to the Multiman-S / Orchestrator. The machine is in very good cosmetic conditions and has been recently serviced by a professional technician. Professional packaging and shipping insurance included in the shipping costs.

Released in 1977 as the successor to the Multiman-S (called the Orchestrator in US), the Multiman S/2 is a fully polyphonic multitimbral string synthesizer capable of splitting and layering sounds. Using the dedicated On/Off buttons, the included sounds can be split in the middle of the keyboard allowing you to play one combination of instruments with the left hand, and another combination with the right. -- The name "Multiman" is the combination of Multi + Man, where Man comes from the italian "Mano" (hand in English).

The Crumar Multiman S/2 features 5 splittable sounds (Brass, Piano, Clavichord, Cello and Violin) and a Bass sound assigned to only the bottom 27 notes of the keyboard. Each sound has its dedicated volume controls for left and right zones and there are 3dedicated audio outputs : Pianos/Bass + Brass + Main (all sounds).

STRINGS
The Multiman S/2 strings are raw, lush and rich with a warm lowend that fits incredibly good in a mix, a powerful sound quite different from other smooth, milky analog competitors. This section includes Cello and Violin, two sound source at different octaves with dedicated volume controls and processed by the integrated 3 line BBD chorus ensemble. The string sounds can also be altered using the global Sustain and Vibrato controls and with the dedicated String Timbre, a 6 db/oct discrete LP filter that allows to generate sounds ranging from dark pads to church-organs to massive analog strings.

BRASS
The brass section of the Multiman S/2 sounds absolutely fantastic. The core of this section is the discrete transistor ladder LP filter equipped with Cutoff, Resonance (labelled Contour & Emphasis) and filter Attack and Decay. The Cutoff and Resonance are totally Moog-style and the fast Decay coupled with the smooth Attack allow to generate a variery of fat sounds ranging from puncing basses to sweeping leads and majestic analog brasses. The Multiman S/2 brass section gives his best at the mid-low frequencies and, despite its sculpted and definite character, it works great when layered with the raw strings. The global Sustain and Vibrato controls are also available for the Brass.

PIANO
The Piano section includes Piano and Clavichord sounds with dedicated volume sliders and the global Release and Vibrato controls. The Clavichord is the classic sound implemented in all the string synthesizers, a HP filtered saw waveform designed to add extra harmonics to the main sounds. But the Piano sound in the Multiman S/2 is not the classic analog piano emulation you can find in other string synthesizers, it looks kind of low-end enhancer designed to be played together with the other sound sources.

BASS
The Bass sound in the Multiman S/2 is very, very huge. It sounds like a 808-style bass drum with a smooth, pleasant saturation. This sound has been originally designed as accompaniment instrument but it can easily find its place in modern music productions. Used in conjunction with Piano and Brass, it can generate truly earthshaking analog bass sounds.

Roland System 100 Model 102 Expander

"This is a rare Roland System 100 Expander 102. It is in good condition and is fully functioning.

The Expander 102 section is a keyboard-less version of the 101, designed to stand upright and behind the main Synthesizer 101. More than one Expander 102 can be added to make your system fatter and fatter! The Expander is identical to the Synthesizer except that it replaces Portamento/Glide effects with a Sample-and-Hold feature for the LFO, the Noise gen. is replaced by a Ring Modulator, and the A-440 tuning osc. is replaced by weak/strong sync inputs and a mix-in jack. The Expander is an excellent way to add more oscillators and synth effects (the s&h and ring-mod) to a System 100. The oscillators can be synced if you have both modules. The 101 & 102 are already internally patched and ready to produce sounds, but that can be bypassed by external patching."

"Roland Juno-106 Original Box 'time Capsule' Like new!
This is pretty close to owning a brand new juno-106! Original box matches the serial #. Comes with the original box, foam inserts, manuals.

This is Japan version based on the serial #. My tech check internals and switch the power supply to USA 110/120V standard. Battery also replaced, and all functions tested!

Only a very tiny dent on the side panels, you have to look very close to check. And small scratch on the bottom."
