Eurorack TB-303: Three all-in-one modules compared

video upload by John Schussler

"More 303 comparisons. I've looked at the Hydronium and the Bassline before, but have only recently acquired an x0x Heart. Up to this point my favorite 303 emulation has been the Hydronium, but it's much larger than it needs to be, and I'm always on the lookout for something that sounds just as good but is smaller.

No, I don't have an Acidlab M303. I should probably get one. It seems to be the only other module that's an entire 303 behind one small panel.

Sequencer is Next Tuesday, which has slide and accent outs, a critical component when evaluating a 303 style module.

VINTAGE ROLAND SVC-350 Vocoder Programming Tutorial

video uploads by Scifi Funk

Both parts in the playist above.

"ROLAND SVC-350 Vocoder Programming explained in detail (Part 1 of 2)
https://hyperfollow.com/scififunk/

In this tutorial, I play a VINTAGE ROLAND JUPITER 6 Synthesizer sound through the classic ROLAND SVC-350 Vocoder.

I will talk through all of the parameters on the vocoder. For maximum expression, a Mic into a vocoder cannot be beaten, although electric/acoustic guitar is pretty amazing as well.

So, why the ROLAND SVC-350 Vocoder? Well, it gives a high level of control, with all those band sliders, and the chorus is to die for.

00:00 Roland SVC-350 Introduction
00:39 What is a vocoder? Each input defined on the SVC-350 (Program input (expression) and the carrier input (sound source))
01:48 First demo - the pitch is determined by the carrier.
02:17 Mixing
02:28 Unlimited polyphony!
02:48 The analyzing section vs the synthesizing section.
04:04 The jack inputs - starting with the hold jack (could be used via a foot pedal)
05:36 Program input (as defined in the manual).
06:16 Voice Character control, examples shown (It’s a bit like a graphic EQ)
07:56 Focus on the carrier instrument for unique sounds, plus other pots defined."

Part 2:

00:00 Roland SVC-350 Vocoder mode.
00:42 Ensemble mode (a lovely heavy chorus sound)
01:24 Instrument input (It’s got to be an crisp analog synth) with examples.
02:17 Guitar Input with harmonics (a compressor is built in).
03:05 The ideal carrier input setup (E.g. settings on a Roland Jupiter 6)
05:43 The best carrier sound is the most horrible basic sound (but crisp).
06:10 Use a drum machine as the instrument and sing you get an expressive drum machine.
06:45 EMU SP-12 Drum machine Vocoder example.
07:37 Filter sweep example
08:28 Remember this - the sound source can be anything - experiment.

Arturia Wurli V - A detailed demo/tutorial of this updated classic

"We explore the new upldated Wurli V3, part of Arturia's recently relased V Collection X. It's a recreation of the Wurlitzer Electronic Piano heard. Originally intended as a home and educational instrument, it's iconic sound can be heard on many records in jazz, funk, rock, soul and beyond. We go over all of its main-panel and advanced futures, and take a look at a few of the factory presets"

Unlock complex delay pedals with a MIDI controller

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The Source Audio Nemesis is a classic stereo delay with loads of interesting parameters. Unfortunately most of those parameters are only accessible via the editor software - or as MIDI CC parameters. Meanwhile the Free the Tone Future factory delay makes all the parameters available via the front panel interface, but it's a cumbersome button and encoder process that feels like an old digital synth interface.

To get easy access to most parameters while playing you can use a MIDI controller. The cheap and cheerful option is a Korg NanoKontrol 2. It is handsome, compact, cheap but is USB only which means if you want to use it without a computer then you'll need to go through a MIDI host. Now your slimline controller is starting to get big and messy, especially if you also want to add an external clock.

The best controller option imo is the FaderFox EC-4. Not only does it have MIDI in and out, it can pass through MIDI clock, has multiple scenes available direct from the unit and even lets you create four-character names for every parameter. Of course it also costs about the same (or more) as your expensive stereo delay pedal so you'll want to be sure you'll get good use from it beyond just a delay pedal knob tweak.

So is it worth the time and trouble to add a controller? It can make for some dramatic effects far beyond what is usually possible. It could also be a far quicker and more enjoyable way to program new patches.

* In the Future Factory EQ controls I limited the bass EQ boost. The full CC range 0-127 gives a 15dB bass boost. That was so ferocious I limited the range to 0-100. So if you want bass boost it's available.

"You've probably never heard of this guy and you've probably never heard the original music either but Mad Max, as we used to call him back then, played a major role in my musical roots, maybe the most impactfull musician before I turned 18 and before I was 100% into my masters Vangelis, JMJ, Klaus Schulze and Harrold Budd. This is just a humble 'Christmas improvised revisited jam-cover blah blah blah' of one of his track. Headphones recommended."

Lunar - Ambient Noise 🎄 (Arp 2600 m // Waldorf M + Red Panda Particle 2 // Arturia Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"For the last video of 2023, I really wanted to spotlight the raw sound of the amazin ARP 2600 M 🤩
So throughout the whole track, you'll only hear the sound coming directly from the ARP 2600 M without any external effects, though I did use its onboard spring reverb (+ a bit of EQ/comp where used for mixing purposes).
Contrary to my previous (which was the first) video featuring the ARP which was an uptempo track, no beats or kick here! Only the ARP and the Waldorf M (+ Particle granular delay).
The same track from the Keystep Pro is sequencing both synths.

As you can see, I use some patching in this one for the ARP:
 - The VCF output is going through its preamp input to make the distorted sound you gradually hear (it's being played in parallel of the dry sound coming out from VCF output)
 - I also used the LFO to modulate the filter and pulse width of oscillator 2
 - I did did some patching as well, in order to play portamento with one of the ARP's oscillator (using the voltage processor "Lag Time")

* Hardware used *

// SYNTH:
 - Korg ARP 2600 M (semi modular analog synth) - RAW sound
 - Waldorf M (8-voice hybrid digital and analog wavetable) + Red Panda Particle v2 (digital granular delay)

// SEQUENCER:
 - Arturia Keystep Pro"

"Like nearly all the high end vintage analog synths we sell, this item has been METICULOUSLY disassembled, cleaned inside and out, FULLY serviced by professionals who’ve been servicing and selling vintage synths for more than the last 3 decades, and systematically tested multiple times over a long period to ensure it’s working exactly as it should. No BS. No ebay surprises. We’re perfectionists and don’t cut corners. Although this instrument came to us in relatively good shape, we want our items to be better than the rest and invested *many* hours of tech time plus parts costs to fully overhaul this unit so it would be clean, working like new again and as reliable as possible for its next owner. This was a serious investment of time, love, and money, and was definitely worth the effort and is of course reflected in the higher than usual price. If you’re looking for a great sounding example of this model that works just like it should without needing to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars in tech fees and waiting from weeks to years, this one should make you very happy."

"Minimoog style desktop synth from Ken Macbeth. The condition is very good. There are no technical problems. There are a few small scratches on the case. 220 volt power supply included.

3VCOs: VCO1 and 2 have saw, pulse, triangle and sine waveforms and the pulse width can be voltage controlled by external CVs. A low frequency noise with level control is available as well. VCO 1 can hard sync VCO2. VCO3 can be used as a modulation oscillator and can be disconnected from the master CV. Modulation targets are filter cutoff frequency and/or pitch of VCOs1and2. All VCOs have individual outputs, coarse and fine frequency controls, separate CV inputs for controlling frequency and pre-filter level controls.

The filter is a Moog 24dB lowpass filter. It´s input is a mixture of all three VCOs and noise. The cutoff frequency can be controlled by the first envelope generator as well as by an external CV. The filtertracking is switchable between off / half / full (0%, 1V/oct and 1.5V/oct).

The envelopes are ADSRs with a switchable release parameter thats time is depending on the decay parameter, just like the Minimoog. The filter envelope can be also used to control VCO2´s pitch what sounds great when VCO2 is synchronised. Furthermore you can invert this envelope´s characteristic. The second envelope modulates the VCA. If an external CV is patched to the VCA the internal modulation is broken up. A momentary button allows for manual triggering of the envelopes"

"This is the 'A' version with the best filter sound. Resonance can sound very good

No functional issues. Well calibrated, buttons 100%

Red knob may be a little loose in shipping, but once you attach it again it shouldn't come off during use. this is the only defect. Never been a major issue just thought I should mention it

The programmer is wonderful. Works seamlessly and really opens up the synth making it a joy to program and perform live. It is not for controlling every possible parameter, but definitely the important ones and allows you to tweak things live."

Embark on a musical journey with the Thomas Synti 1055, a rare analog synthesizer. Crafted in 1973, this gem has the same internal boards as the Moog Satellite. Uniquely, the Thomas Organ Company acquired the Satellite rights in 1973, birthing the enhanced Synti 1055. It features a keybed with 7 more keys than the Satellite, allowing for deeper bass Sounds.

This rare analog synth is in good condition for its age and definitely will make a great addition to your collection."
