#jamuary2024 05 ZOA (Game of Life seq) & Aparillo

video upload by SynthAddict

""More iOS fun...

ZOA - a 'Game of Life' sequencer (cellular automata) with limited native timbre settings, but it's great for MIDI output goodness, very fun to explore

Aparillo - an amazing synth/sound design tool

Just another fun improv noodle, so plenty of errors and happy accidents. :-)
I went a bit long as I got carried away..."

Ambient Electronica Waldorf Iridium & Maschine +

video upload by Crybo Synth Sounds

"As usual the only way to use the Maschine + is in standalone! Not really but its the way I enjoy it the most. This time using it with the Waldorf Iridium. Lots of FX, 3 instances of Massive and 1 of Monark. There is a arp of Massive which took up a big chunk of CPU, did'nt want to re-sample it though. Re-sampling of the Iridium.

Soundpacks available for the Novation Peak, Korg Minilogue XD, Waldorf Iridium, Hydrasynth & UDO Super 6 https://crybosynthsounds.gumroad.com"

Dual Audio Mixer - Low-Gain Electronics | 4U Modular - Serge Modular

video upload by LowGainElectronics

"Dual Audio Mixer pcb is a go! Just need panels to arrive!
In this patch I’m just mixing 4 negative slews, and one ‘73 vcf in vco mode.. totaling a 6 voice drone. Because the mix bus is passive (buffered output of course) the signals fight against each other creating some really rich timbres!"

OP-X PRO-3 vs. Oberheim OB-X | Jupiter-8 | Prophet-5

video upload by SonicProjects

"SonicProjects OP-X PRO-3 comparison to Oberheim OB-X as well as Jupiter-8 and Prophet-5. Includes A:B tweaking as well as comparing cloned presets.

Setup:
Upper keyboard: Oberheim OB-X Rev.2 vintage built in 1980 equipped with 6 voices. The stereo output goes directly to input 1 and 2 of an RME Fireface UC which has very clean and neutral sounding converters. Signal directly recorded to disk.

Lower keyboard: E-MU Xboard 61 MIDI keyboard attached via USB to a MacBook Pro M1 2020 with macOS Ventura 13.4. The MIDI signal is driving OP-X PRO-3 which is hosted in Logic Pro. The stereo output of OP-X PRO-3 is directly recorded to disk.

Blue skin installed.

Parts:
00:00 A:B tweaking
10:51 Comparing presets
23:35 Jupiter-8
29:05 Prophet-5

Since no Jupiter-8 and and Prophet-5 were available this part of the comparison uses the excellent original factory presets recordings of Synthmania:

Priming PCMCIA SRAM Cards for the Korg Wavestation SR & 01/W Series Synths

The following, in via Neil Hetrick, is a more detailed update to this earlier post. via Neil: "I wanted to post this information regarding use of PCMCIA SRAM cards with the Korg Wavestation SR (and presumably also with the Korg 01/W series) in case it proves helpful for others trying to use custom waveform data with their synth.

It turns out that the synth requires that the PC Card be dual-mode, auto-switching 8-bit/16-bit. Currently-available (in 2023) PCMCIA SRAM cards are all single-mode, 16-bit only or 8-bit only, due to a specific chip no longer being available. After having trouble with a modern, 16-bit-only SRAM card, I received a tip-off from a kind fellow at Voice Crystal (they used to make custom soundware for many vintage Korg synths of that era) suggesting that the auto-switching functionality may be an important factor in getting a card to work with the synth. I subsequently found some forum info online relating a similar issue with PCMCIA cards in the Alesis Andromeda: About the 8-bit/16-bit dual-mode PCMCIA SRAM cards

It is also equipped with functions such as a hybrid sound source of analog modeling and PCM, a sequencer with 16 steps and 8 patterns, pattern chain playback, a flam function, and pattern muting. The DRUM MINT 83 not only improves sound quality thanks to a more powerful CPU, but also reconfigures it to make it easier to use for acid and house music. In addition, the built-in stereo delay makes it possible to express a wide range of expressions.

Coral got a new Engine! VCO Moog style Virtual Analog

video upload by OXI Instruments

"We kick off 2024 with a new sound engine available for Coral ! 🪸🪸

3x variable-saw virtual analog oscillators that seamlessly morphs from Triangle to Square waveforms with dynamic PWM capabilities. 2 of the 3 oscillators can be detuned in relation to the main oscillator.

The detuning controls (Harm and Morph) are finely calibrated to easily align with musical intervals, such as +7 and +12 semitones. This feature facilitates the creation of musically coherent detuning effects, while still providing the flexibility to detune by a few cents."

Why Use A Modular Synth For Techno Production? Feat LIL TECHNOBOX

video upload by Bilijie

"So why make Techno (or any type of music really) with modular synthesizers? We all know it's relatively expensive. You can't save presets and recreating past work is hard, if not impossible. It's cumbersome. It's tough to learn. Is it worth it?

When it comes to making music in 2024, we each choose between many different options in hardware and software, and on this channel we'll investigate more about these options and hopefully have some fun making tracks together.

Unlike a lot of techno production, this track is improvised on the spot. I have a few patterns loaded into Constellation (8 track trigger sequencer lower left) that I programmed minutes before recording. There's no post-mixing or effects. It's literally straight out of the box into a 2 track recorder.

I like working this way as it forces decisions earlier, and there's no room to make "fix it in post" changes. You either get it or you don't, for better or worse.

How do you like to make music? What do you use? What's your workflow or technique? How do you stay motivated and inspired? Please let me know in the comments... it's a major subject of this channel going forward and I'm very curious!"

I made a sound like the one I made with the Quantum. But this time I added a third part, using the possibility that the Moog One gave me within third timbre.

Thank you."

"Not all analogue classics have keys. The Xpander was an early module that packed in more features than its moderate size would lead you to expect, and left a legacy still discernible in modern synth design.

Boasting six independent voices, the XP-1 combines analogue audio generation (VCOs, VCAs & VCFs) with the flexibility of digital workflow. Part of the original concept of the XP-1 was to replace the wire-laden modulation of previous years with a more immediate and elegant approach. The result is a graceful yet highly versatile and powerful synthesis experience."

Casio CZ Synth PROGRAMMING

video uploads by Scifi Funk

Follow-up to this series below.

"How to really understand programming the Casio CZ Series from the CZ-101 to the CZ-1
https://hyperfollow.com/scififunk/

This series demonstrates how the synth works at a detailed level. By the time you have watched them all, you will have a great idea of how all the parameters interact for making sounds.

The Casio CZ-101 was my very first poly synth bought way back in 1985."

Playlist:

Casio CZ Synth PROGRAMMING. 1 of 4. “Creating movement”. (CZ 101, CZ 1000, CZ 5000, CZ 1 etc)
00:00 CZ-101, CZ-1 Introduction to programming using the Virtual CZ plugin.
00:40 We start with most basic sound BUT with Velocity sensitivity, so the sound is alive as you play (tone movement).
01:51 Fine tuning movement. The built-in chorus, plus Chorus defined (technically).
02:56 More fine tuning movement. A manual chorus - using the Vibrato section.
03:41 Harmonic movement. Using a chord that doesn’t resolve. E.g. C Maj 7 flat 5.
04:22 Add a vintage reverb with a long tail and the sound comes alive.
05:17 Using Detune to add movement. Line 1 + Line 1 or Line 1 + Line 2.
07:25 Future lessons will use the Envelopes to add further movement.
Casio CZ Synth PROGRAMMING. 2 of 4. “Combining Waveforms”. (CZ 101, CZ 1000, CZ 5000, CZ 1)
00:00 Combining Sawtooth and Square Waves (keeping the same octave discussion)
01:00 Combining Sawtooth with the other waveforms inc. Resonance waveforms.
01:51 How resonance waveforms can work the same as a resonance slider.
04:11 Using resonance to sound a bit like a vocal sound (low-end frequencies).
06:01 54% is the magic number for performance vibrato (demo as well)
06:25 Stacking. Super Saw wave examples.
07:29 Ring modulation add complexity (or fuzziness) to a sound.
Casio CZ Synth PROGRAMMING. 3 of 4. “2 Osc FULL CONTROL”. (CZ 101, CZ 1000, CZ 5000, CZ 1)
00:00 How to have full control over 2 oscillators. Set up explained.
02:16 Start point. A tiny delay means it sounds like its being phased/flanged.
03:19 Lets hear how each combination of waveforms sound.
04:00 The threshold for hearing the same waveform on the other oscillator.
04:50 Using envelopes to smooth filter sweeps.
05:35 More combinations.
06:39 Pulse width discussion. Using Filter sweeps to hear the differences in waveforms)

Polyphonic Aftertouch on the KORG modwave

video upload by Waveformer

"I've been playing around with the KORG modwave and polyphonic aftertouch lately, and it's a lot of fun! The modwave feels like it was made for polyphonic aftertouch, with all its modulation features and the extremely powerful, flexible, and good-sounding synth engine. Playing with polyphonic aftertouch is a joy, but at the same time it requires some practice. I'm training my fingers to press down on the keys more gently and with greater nuance, but I still have some way to go. I thought I'd share this video of today's practice session, to perhaps inspire others to try polyphonic aftertouch with this synth as well.

The audio is recorded to SD card on a Zoom R16 mixer/recorder and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 18 (free version)."

Chompi: It's good at ONE thing.

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"Chompi is great.. but, it has some funky quirks that I was not expecting when I first turned it on! When compared to other samples, the Chompi Sampler mimics more of a tape loop than anything and its actually why i bought one. So today, let's talk about the Chompi Pros and Cons, an overview, a review, as well as the one reason why I love it and bought it in the first place! Varispeed recording."

Miles Kvndra - Dune | Moog Subsequent 25 Jam | Jamuary 2024

video upload by Miles Kvndra

"Hi friends,

Happy New Year to you all! Here is my new song "Dune", which I composed and recorded live just using the Moog Sub 25 together with the Valhalla Supermassive. It has also been the intro of my recent live sets. I love this jam because it is something very different from the things that I usually do and also transports a big cinematic energy. Hope you dig it too and have an awesome 2024. 💜

Ram ♈ (Waldorf M + Analog Heat + Rooms + Pill // TR6S // Minitaur // S1 + Particle // Keystep Pro)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"A 4-minute uptempo jam for the first video of 2024! 🎉 May all your wishes come true this year!

The Arturia Keystep Pro (KSP) is sequencing:
- the PADS played by the Waldorf M through the Elektron Analog Heat MkII (using mainly its analog filter modulated by one of its LFO) + Rooms reverb + Pill ducking pedal (triggered by the kick from the TR-6S).
- the BASS played by the Moog Minitaur. I used the 'Chain' patterns of the KSP to make a long bass line.

The DRUMS are being sequenced/played by the Roland TR-6S (I used its onboard filter on the master BUS for the builds).

And the LEAD sound played in real time on the Roland S-1 synth, through the Red Panda Particle 2 granular delay."
