"Rare Synth/Sequencer in incredible condition! EML made only 300 of these. Serial numbers started at 400 I believe, from what I’ve read they start with each model number. Completely checked through and serviced. Works and sounds great, really unique HUGE sound and a really fun sequencer. We have a great record of putting a lot of care into our shipments and will ship protected. Instrument quality and playability is well documented please ask if you need any other pics or vids. Would make an amazing stage or studio instrument. A couple small scratches on the back, as pictured, slight patina on handle.

EML's 400/401 ElectroComp is a rare semi-modular analog synthesizer/sequencer that first appeared in 1970 and although it was produced until 1984, roughly 300 were made. The synthesizer (401) component can be considered a scaled down version of the EML 500 in some ways. It looks very similar in color and layout but lacks a built-in keyboard. It retains patch-cord signal patching and editing associated with modular synths as well as some switches. Dual VCOs produce a monophonic analog sound which can be shaped by the multimode resonant VCF (filter) with switchable hi, low and band pass filtering. Only sawtooth, square and noise waveforms are available from the oscillators. The envelope section offers only attack and release control (the EML 500 envelope section added sustain).

Complementing the EML 401 modular component is the 400 system which, as seen above, is covered with dozens of switches and sliders. Basically it's an analog sequencer component. It is a 12-tone diatonic sequencer with a digitally controlled voltage quantizer built-in - a sophisticated feature for the time. This allows for a variable number of steps-per-octave ranging from 5 to 60...a very unusual feature which makes the unit very useful for those exploring alternate/microtonal tunings. It also offered voltage controlled envelope generators in 16 stages! These could be programmed for creating pretty wild sequences and patterns.

The EML 400 and 401 system was a response to the popular Moog and ARP modulars from the era. It offered new ways of synthesizing classic analog sounds which may not have been better than its competition, but it certainly was unique. Today these rare instruments can still be found in use by synth anoraks around the world."

"Professionally serviced and circuit bent HR-16 purchased a few years ago from this wonderful shop, Carolina WDWRX:

Includes 5 3’ stackable banana jack patch cables. All controls and outputs work. A few of the pads seem to require extra velocity to trigger the sound at full volume, but they all trigger easily. The select slider feels a little gummy but tracks values properly.

With no patch points engaged it sounds like a vanilla HR-16. When you start adding & stacking cables it makes all sorts of crazy noises. Now that I’ve extensively sampled it I’m ready to let it go. Probably a million sounds I missed but I’m focusing in a different direction."

"Wiggling your fingers on a keyboard for vibrato is something many a musician does intuitively, alas with little effect. For decades this important way to make an instrument sing has seemingly been relegated to modulation and pitch wheels, with few exceptions in the recent years. This makes for a rather indirect play style, lacking the natural expression of bending a string. It is little known that already in the year 1939 in a sanatorium in France, the inventor Georges Jenny created an instrument that would allow vibrato on a keyboard directly. This is the story and sound of the Ondioline, an instrument I love so much I recorded an entire album with it.

"Graphic Resonant Filterbank (FB) is a ten-band analogue filterbank with digital control over each bands boost or cut. Each band can be controlled individually via CV or manually, while complex control configurations turn the filterbank into an unconventional multimode filter and even an instrument in its own right when played with various resonance settings. The Expander module provides hands-on adjustment of boost and cut for all bands.

Both plugins run the same DSP code from the MFX hardware with a clean, simple and expanded user interface. "In this installation of my GND-1T speech chip synthesizer tutorials I describe various Randomization functions, and how to use the delay line as a mini looper using Echo Freeze. The latter allows you to create rhythmic and textural loops that you can use as a backing to play over the top using the Synth in its usual modes of operation. These functions can be used to very quickly create rich audio scenes, even in the total absence of any saved presets, and with minimal familiarity with the synth architecture.
