1. Bristronica 24: MyVolts The Silent Alchemist Nears Shipping
We caught up with Caroline who gave us the latest update to the *Silent Alchemist*, a versatile power hub designed for musicians. Featuring five isolated USB-C outputs and a high-wattage sixth output capable of delivering 100 watts, the device can power a Mac with the remaining outputs providing 20 watts each. Its independent circuits ensure noise-free operation, catering to a variety of devices including the Dreadbox module and Sysmo slope generator.
The Silent Alchemist uses innovative step-up power tips to convert USB-C input to the correct voltage for various devices. There's also new feature: an uninterruptible power supply allowing seamless transition between wall and power bank sources. Also introduced were updated cables, such as silver candy cords and floating ring TRS to TS cables, expanding connection flexibility. The Silent Alchemist is expected to be available in December with a competitive pricing strategy.
At Bristronica 2024, we caught up with the creator of the *ML2M*, who introduced us to the latest version. The ML2M is a compact Eurorack module with Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing seamless synchronization with Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, and iOS music apps using Ableton Link without the need for cables. It either connects to an existing network or creates its own, ensuring robust sync even in environments with unreliable Wi-Fi. The module, which retains its 2HP size, now features MIDI integration through TRS jacks. Users can access a web interface to configure each output for different clock divisions and reset triggers, making setup straightforward and flexible.
Alongside the ML2M, there's also the Missing Link Junior. This desktop version offers the same functionality but in a box format, complete with MIDI and CV clock outputs. Both products are now accessible, with a starting price of $250.
At Machina Bristronica 2024, we caught up with Arran from @archaea_modular_synthesis who presented the *Exchange Module*. This programmable patcher, a year in the making, evolved from its early prototype stage to a fully functional module. Arran explained how the Exchange can route synth voices via a beam controller and three exchange modules installed within the skiff, allowing for versatile patching. Operating like a matrix patchbay, it enables users to select inputs and outputs with the push of a button, create presets, and chain multiple modules for synchronized patching.
Communication between the modules occurs over the Eurorack power bus as well as over MIDI via the USB-C connection. The Exchange maintains analog integrity, ensuring there’s no conversion latency. The forthcoming release expected in late November 2024, includes a USB-driven editor for enhanced control capabilities.

"Hi, I have been a buchla fan for a long time, and I have always been curious about buchla 700. I immediately bought the id 700 when it was available, which is really a great app. However, I like hardware instruments with intuitive operation. Thanks to my good friend kweiwen, who wrote the initial code for me, I opened this mysterious instrument. After half a year of learning and development, I finally completed this module. Although there are still some improvements to be made, I am very happy, the sound is really good, I try to make myself comfortable with it, so the design is based on personal habits.
The main program is written in max/msp, using daisyseed to implement gen ~ code burning.
buchla700 is a very complex instrument, although it cannot be perfectly reproduced, I think half of the core content is there."

In the realm of synthesizers, the nearly forgotten classic Buchla 700 is celebrated for its unique sound design. We are thrilled to introduce our tribute module, showcasing a distinctive 700 FM Voice module powered by re-optimized algorithms. With its intuitive interface, you can dive in effortlessly, whether you’re crafting intricate soundscapes or vibrant melodies. This module is designed to inspire creativity and unlock endless possibilities.
This module is a monophonic sound source featuring four variable waveform oscillators and six specialized algorithmic index amplifiers, creating complex modulation patterns with twelve algorithms. Each oscillator and index group can be individually controlled via CV inputs, with dedicated CV attenuation for each. It provides a dual-path mix output for Group A/B, enabling CV morphing, along with a separate output for channel B. Both A and B channels offer independent wave shapes and drift modulation. Each oscillator supports wave morphing between sine, saw, and square waveforms, with the option to expand using an additional 12 control knobs. Two OLED displays showcase configuration algorithm graphics and a dual-channel oscilloscope. The DA output is 48 kHz/24-bit, with finely tuned oscillator algorithms. "I teamed up with Belgian Eurorack module manufacturer Joranalogue to solve one of the biggest problem I had with my wall of test equipment: I could use it in the studio, but not play it live. It is just too heavy and fragile, being about 50 years. So that part of my music remained unperformed. With our new module Collide 4 I and everyone else can now take the wonderful textures and sonic possibilities of nuclear research equipment on the road.
It is based on a lock-in amplifier, a tool made to sniff out tiny fluctuations of a frequency in vast amount of noise. But Joran took the concept further and added a frequency shifter. It is module with vast possibilities, and I can only give you a small overview and intro in this video. Check out Collide 4 at your trusted modular dealer in person now."

"Everything has its cost. To acquire glorious new features the cost here is the tedium of updating the firmware. Updating the Modor DR-2 isn't especially painful but it is slow. All up about 15 to 20 minutes for the entire job. For those on older machines: When you check your operating system, if you are on OS006 or older you will need to update your bootloader before trying to install new firmware.

"Elka - Synthex (s/n 1398) C.1984, The Synthex is an 8 voice analogue poly synth, this is the MK3 version with factory MIDI. In good condition and all working well, factory sounds reloaded. NOTE: This Synthex has been fitted into a flightcase - it does not come out of the case, therefore it does not have it’s original wooden sides. You will need right-angled MIDI leads, for instance - which can then fit inside the case without having to be removed. The handle on the case is broken, so it will need a new handle.
VEMIA can collect for palletising (60GBP) or hand delivery if possible."

"Does it have PSU now??? Classic analogue / digital synth from Dave Smith Instruments, from Orbital's studio. This version has the lovely Prophet 5 knobs, and a mix of potentiometers and endless rotary encoders. The panel graphics clearly show which are which: if the lines go full circle it is an encoder, if they are horseshoe-shaped, the control is a pot. Plus if the control is a pot, it has a position marker line.
This seems to be the best solution to the well-documented problems with earlier versions. ***We are sourcing a 15V DC 1300mA pin positive 220V external power supply, which will be included.*** This is in really nice cosmetic condition and will come with Orbital's written provenance. Packing 24GBP"

"Ultra-rare Voyetra Eight analogue polysynth, complete with its even rarer VPK-5 companion keyboard. Serial number GM4806. We think this is a rev 4. The Voyetra sounds great, but autotune is sometimes a bit slow and sometimes painful. Occasionally (after 20 minute warm-up) it runs through the process without any trouble, but other times it can need many repeated attempts. (The auto-tune log from March: 29/3 evening: 3 attempts, 16 voices tuned. 30/3 morning: 12 attempts, 16 voices tuned.) The keyboard has one slightly raised key, and is very clacky - could do with rebushing, which we will leave to the new owner. There has been an issue with the X-Mod axis on the joystick - which might be a V8 issue rather than a keyboard fault - but we think it may have resolved itself. ***UPDATE: no - it's working over MIDI but not from the keyboard's joystick.*** Cosmetically the keyboard is very nice, and the Voyetra Eight front panel too, but the V8 white casing (like every example I've seen in the last 20 years) is looking a bit sad. I can't help thinking using white wasn't the best choice.
Not a big issue when you have the chance to pick up one of the rarest and nicest sounding synths ever. Originally US power, but changed to UK/Euro (switchable internally). Supply your own IEC mains lead. MIDI is on XLR - we will supply a lead for the keyboard and two to link the V8 with other standard 5-pin MIDI controller devices.
We will pack with the utmost care, but low-volume vintage synths , particularly card-frame designs like this and the Korg PS series, are likely to need cards re-seated and/or expert re-calibration if couriered. Please factor that in to your bid amount. Packing 36GBP."

"Lovely Mark II Vocoder Plus, in full working order, checked out at VEMIA in March 2024. Apart from a couple of things that you don't see when playing, it's in lovely cosmetic condition too. The back of the top metal panel has many little dings, and there are two unexplained holes in and around the in/out panel on the back. The main puzzle is a rectangular opening in the panel, and there is also a neat circular hole in the wood to the right of the panel. There is also an extra XLR output above the serial number plaque (***now tested and working fine***). All are very professionally done. UK/European voltage - currently with a Swiss/Italian plug, but that can be swapped in two minutes to the correct one for your country. Packing at VEMIA 24GBP."
